We must admit; we had been big fans of traditional sandwiches. Until we tried Qedra for a cheap place to eat in Zamalek. Now we rank it right up there, alongside Mo Salah! Try great Egyptian food in Zamalek, Qedra’s sandwiches hit the spot without any heaviness or oily aftertaste. They are fresh, clean and super tasty, from the first to last bite.

Foul, in all its variations. Ta’ameya with Labna and Rocca, Spicy Ta’ameya, Omelette with Kiri.
Dishes Sampled
As soon as were hit by the aroma of the baladi bread cooking away in village-style oven it was a no-brainer. Forget about shami bread, baladi was definitely the way to go. The menu at Qedra is rich, but we decided to go with the popular choices of simple foul, ta’ameya, omelette, and fries. Please note at this point, we made the trip from the outer reaches of Cairo, and then waited in the mid-morning queue to pay for our order. That takes commitment and a hearty appetite.
The bread was just as we had hoped for, fresh from the oven and appetizing. Every filling was perfectly seasoned and in just the right-sized portion. The ta’ameya was fresh, with a crunchy casing and soft, lightly spiced interior. Nestled in the bread pocket, with crunchy ‘slaw and tahina it scored high points with us. The omelette was great as well. Again, the seasoning was spot on and there was no oiliness. The foul was a treat, and the spicy fries were hot, aromatic and filling. Well won over, we can see Qedra becoming an all-time favorite for us.
Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverage Options
The homemade Baba Ghanoush sandwich, the White Cheese with Fresh Tomato, Olive Oil and Thyme and Foul with Basterma are on our shortlist. Beverage options include water and soft drinks.
Décor & Ambience
Funky, natural, fresh light organic colors. Food comes in Qedra’s trademark brown paper bags, all very eco-friendly. Ambience is busy, busy, busy.
Clientele Mix & Price Range
A cross section of every element of Zamalek society. From local workers to the well-heeled, all rub shoulders to place their order and emerge clutching their prize.
Price range is totally affordable. This has to be the best deal in town. We fed our entire team with what would normally cover lunch for two.
