When it comes to protecting ourselves and children from sunburn, we all agree getting summer skincare right is essential. While it is true that the severity of sun damage depends on the amount of melanin in the skin, olive and brown skinned people are still prone to pigmentation, dark spots and skin cell damage that could lead to cancer. So slather on that sunscreen regardless of your skin tone!

Here are some tips from the experts at the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Dermatology and the Melanoma Research Foundation for staying safe in the sun.

You’re probably not applying sunscreen right. Studies show 10% of the face is usually not covered in lotion, usually around the eyes and eyelids. Also people don’t usually apply enough sunscreen.

Choosing the right SPF level. Experts recommend a broad-spectrum water-resistant sunscreen of at least 30 SPF, applied at least 15-30 minutes before heading out into the sun. Re-apply every 2 hours or after swimming.

Avoid peak hours or take frequent breaks. The sun is the strongest between 10 am and 4 pm, so if you and your family are splashing around, make sure to take plenty of shady breaks under the umbrella.

Avoid certain chemicals on the ingredients list. Oxybenzone and methylisothiazolinone are two flagged by the Environmental Working Group.

While it can be a struggle to live a chemical-free lifestyle, here are some options that can help you stay safe from the sun and from too many harmful chemicals.
