Amir Ramses: Writer & Director of Curfew

Amir Ramses director of curfew

Wearing two hats, Amir Ramses is both writer and director of the selected Egyptian film entry for CIFF (Cairo International Film Festival 2020). Curfew has an intriguing storyline and boasts a star-studded cast, setting it up to be one of this year’s ‘must sees’. We tore this talented man away from his other role, that of the artistic director of El Gouna Film Festival, to learn more about his film.

What was your immediate feeling when you heard that Curfew had been selected for CIFF 2020?

Well, I was really happy when I received the invitation from CIFF. This is one of the most prestigious festivals in Egypt. It is a very good start for the film’s journey for me. My first feature film had its beginnings at CIFF many years ago in 2006, and I’ve always been attached to this festival since my days as a student filmmaker.

The screenings, the panels, the activities; I think somehow, it played a big role in my development, and I’m happy to have my film screen in its international competition at the start of its journey.

What inspired you to create this film?

Curfew is a film about secrets. I was always intrigued by family secrets, things you hide protect others. How far you’re willing to go to hide secrets from someone and the sacrifices you’ll make: are they really worth it or not? These are the questions that were evolving in my mind as I worked on the script.

This family drama is set in a single day where a mother and daughter are locked together somewhere as a hidden battle rages, with everyone trying to fulfill their agenda. The mother is trying to keep her secrets shut forever, while the daughter is desperately seeking answers in search of resolution.Amir Ramses director of curfew

It’s a film about acceptance. It’s a film about forgiveness. It’s a film about being able to tolerate, accept, and forgive the other, even if you’re not able to know the reasons behind what they did. It’s a film about trust. That’s how the film

started for me; then naturally I needed to frame it, so I gave it a sense of claustrophobia. I wanted to lock the characters somewhere where their questions would be hanging; I wanted to feel that the house was a real prison; that’s why I chose the 2013 curfew as a background for the film.

Do you feel that it touches on sensitivities specific to Egyptian culture or is it on a more universal human level?

I hate messages in films; my film doesn’t have a message in the sense of like, a lesson learned. But, my film, like my previous line of work, is about acceptance, it’s about tolerance, it’s about being able to trust and accept someone who is different from you, who has different motives, who had diffe

rent perspectives, learning to trust them through your feelings and not by your brains. Just like the themes evolved many times in my previous work: Jews of Egypt and Cairo Time.

You had a stellar cast with both seasoned and new actors to work with. How was the rapport on set?

Working with that caliber of artists in the film has been a real blessing. I’ve been lucky to have really talented actors and actresses in the film. I was so happy, it was was an enchanting experience to have the highly intelligent and delicate Elham Shahin in front of the camera, who formed a bond during shooting with Amina Khalil, who is also one of the most talented actresses of her generation. I think even Kamel El Basha, who comes from a different culture, a different way of making films, was brilliant.Amir Ramses director of curfew

I think one way or the other, we all adapted; we were all working under the same rhythm, it was a very immersive experience for us. And basically, I needed that specifically for the film; it’s all about the acting, it’s all about the energy the actors generate on set. You can make all the good frames, you can create all the good lighting, you can develop all the good style you want. But if you don’t have great acting in this film, you don’t have a film. It’s a character-based drama after all.

What do you have coming up in the pipeline?

My next project is actually a comedy, a very different kind of comedy, a modern one written by the talented screenwriter Haitham Dabbour; who previously wrote films like Photocopy, and Gunshot. Right now, we’re in the phase of finishing the second draft of the film, of the script, and then I hope to start the preparation, then I plan to start the pre-production of the film as soon as possible.

Mistiqa: Going Oriental at the Gezira Club

Mistiqa

The name Mistiqa translates to herbs and spices in Arabic, as captured in traditional cuisine across Egypt and the Levant. Mistiqa offers Egyptian and Oriental food, authentically seasoned with Mistiqa’s own blend of herbs and spices. One of the perks is having their own bread, freshly made and straight from the oven sitting just outside the restaurant.

It serves a variety of foods, ranging from appetizers and soups to main courses with side dishes and desserts. As a restaurant, it has incorporated the main and side dishes around two elements, chicken and ground beef.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Their signature dish has to be the Chicken liver dipped in Baba Ghanoush. The dishes we sampled were plentiful, ranging from appetizers all the way to desserts and everything in between. For cold appetizers, we were served tahini, Baba Ghanoush, Potato Salad, Tomato Salad, Lebanese Grape Leaves, and a Lebanese Garlic Dip. All of which came with just the right amount of seasoning.

On to the hot appetizers, Samboussak with a cheese filling and Chicken Liver served with French fries, which had a distinct and delicious taste with the spices thrown in. Next up were the main courses paired with a side dish. We started with the boneless chicken which was magnificently seasoned and grilled to perfection.

Hawawshy, the other main dish of ground beef with oiled local or balady bread also went down in a flash. The side dish of a creamy Béchamel Pasta with ground beef and a gooey cheesy layer complimented the main courses well. Finishing it all off with dessert, a simple Egyptian Mahalabeya, a tasty mix of milk, starch, and sugar to balance our taste buds with a sweet ending to the meal.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

We definitely want to try the takeaway meal of Shish Tawouk served with kofta and Lebanese grape leaves, French fries, and balady bread. Beverages include Both hot and cold; soft drinks with soda, mint lemonade, tea and Nescafe.

Décor & Ambiance

The décor of the restaurant indoors and outdoors was very simple, a mix of white with wood accents, a good fit for the sporting club look. There was a family-friendly vibe, as anyone inside the club can casually go in and dine alone or with their partners.

Social Distancing and Hygiene Standards

The restaurant has incorporated a healthy way of maintaining social distancing and has a contactless menu with QR codes on tables.

Clientele Mix: During our visit we saw plenty of families, this is a perfect spot for any age group of friends or couples.

Price range: Prices were extremely reasonable considering portions sizes.

Worth noting: Take away and delivery are both available.

Endorphins: What Makes Us Feel So Good?

what are Endorphins

Endorphins are among the brain chemicals known as ‘neurotransmitters’, which has the primary function of transmitting electrical signals within our nervous systems.

In humans, there are at least 20 types of endorphins located in the brain. Two of the most common factors of the release of endorphins, interestingly enough, are stress and pain. The reason behind this is that the endorphins interact with the opiate receptors in our brain to reduce the perception of pain and act similarly to drugs. However, the release of these endorphins does not lead to addiction.

Things Endorphins Do to our Body:

  • Decreased feeling of pain
  • Feelings of euphoria
  • Modulation of appetite
  • Enhancements of the immune system
  • Fewer negative effects of stress

As mentioned above, endorphins seem excellent, and luckily there are ways for us to benefit from endorphins on demand. That is mainly through exercising. It has been proven that the body does produce endorphins in response to prolonged and continuous activites.

Even if you don’t participate in strenuous athletics, you can also try various activities to increase your body’s endorphin levels.

Examples of Activities that Release Endorphins:

  1. Acupuncture
  2. Massage
  3. Biking
  4. Power walking
  5. Swimming
  6. Yoga

Almost any physical activity will act as a trigger to ensure you’re having a healthy dose of endorphins released, which can go a long way in making sure you maintain healthy mental health.

10 Self-Destructive Things you Might Be Doing

By: Mariam Elhamy

Ever wondered what you’re doing wrong? The reason you’re feeling unsatisfied or unhappy is possibly you. Your own actions might be the primary cause of your unhappiness. Here are 10 self-destructive things you don’t know you’re doing that are actually destroying you.

1. Unhealthy Overthinking

Self-Destructive ThingsTelling yourself things like “I’m failing, I can’t do this anymore, I will never be able to overcome this, etc.” and paying attention to your flaws rather than focusing on your gifts. These are all self-destructive thoughts that serve no purpose and will only bring you down. Whenever you catch yourself overthinking try to get your mind on something else.

2. Being on Social Media 24/7

Social media is a misrepresentation of reality. Everything is edited, played with and glamorized, no one should base their judgment on it. Don’t live on your phone and watch other people having a blast, instead go out and live your own life. Take action and stop comparing yourself to others.

3. Overeating or Undereating

Self-image is very important and some of us beat ourselves up about looking perfect in an imperfect world. If you’re binge eating when you’re stressed or dieting obsessively because you dislike the way you look then take a break and think about your health first.

4. Excessive Shopping

This one is for the shopaholics. Spending money on petty things to make you look good when you can’t even afford them is very unhealthy. Instead, focus on buying things you actually need.

5. Working too Hard too Long

Self-Destructive ThingsWork work work and no play is terrible for you, even if you might think that you’re getting productive and making things happen it might take a toll on other things in your life. Make sure to take a break and go out with friends sometime or even relax at home.

6. Hiding Emotions

Not talking about how you feel will break you eventually. Don’t be afraid or ashamed to ask for help, you’ll always find someone willing to do it. Remember that you don’t always have to stay strong it’s okay to admit your weaknesses.

7. Maintaining Unhealthy Relationships

If you find yourself pulling away from all the people in your life and hanging out with the wrong crowd then something is very wrong. Pulling the people you know will hurt you closer is a bad sign and you should trust your intuition when it tells you who you should stay close to and who will bring you down with them.

8. Staying in your Comfort Zone

Not taking chances because you’re afraid of failure will make you miss out on some of the best opportunities in your life. Failure is how you learn so don’t stay defeated, rise up.

9. Not Saying No

Self-Destructive ThingsDon’t be afraid to say no when you don’t want to do something. Pleasing others and putting them first always is not a solution. You need to be selfish sometimes and do what you think is best for you.

10. Regretting the Past

Stop holding on to the past, regret will only cause you pain. Improve yourself and allow your past mistakes to make you a better person. Forgive yourself and don’t hold on to anger towards anyone because you only hurt yourself and your own peace when you do.

Find out the 7 Signs that Mean He’s Not Actually Into You

6 Things Men Hate that Women Do

By: Mariam Elhamy

Not to generalize, but every gender has some traits that the other dislikes. We can’t hide the fact that women are more complicated than men. So, this one is for you beautiful ladies, watch out for these few things you might be doing that men really dislike.

  1. Talking to your Friends about Anything and Everything

We all know that a girl talks about how she feels way more then a guy does. Girls talk to each other a lot, it’s okay to ask for advice or vent when you’re feeling frustrated, but a guy hates it when you discuss the details of your relationship with all your friends. Most guys appreciate privacy so try to keep your fights or issues between the two of you.

2. Bringing Up Old things Every Time you Fight

We all hold grudges, and it comes out involuntarily especially when we’re really hurt. It’s okay to learn from past mistakes but once you’ve talked about it and forgiven it you shouldn’t hold it against the other person and bring it up in every single time you fight. Unless they do it repeatedly and it really bothers you.

3. Not Giving them their Personal Space

Don’t be too clingy, men hate it when they feel like you’re trying to control their life and take up all their free time. They like to be in control of their decisions and you need to give them the space to do other things they like, they’ll always make time for you.

4. Being too Dramatic

Men think women are cute when they act childish in a fun way, they like feeling needed and that you count on them for support but sometimes it’s a bit too much. Acting like a baby to get attention is a huge turnoff. They hate it when you start nagging, complaining and not admitting it when you’re wrong.

5. Bringing up/talking about exes

Men hate it when you talk about your exes especially if you do it all the time or bring up details. It’s okay to have the conversation about exes but you shouldn’t dwell on it or mention them too much because it’s a big turnoff for a lot of men.

6. Not Giving them Enough Attention

Men sometimes need attention too, so if you’re always out with your friends, not taking care of them or their needs and not making them feel that they are needed or wanted they will definitely rethink the relationship.

Everyone is different but the more you talk about the things you dislike the more you’ll understand what your partner needs from you. Read more about Things Women Hate that Men Do
