How Food Affects Your Brain Health By Noura Hassaballa

October 1, 2020
Nutrition for good mental health

Nutrition plays a very important role not only in wellbeing and physical health but also in mental health. Eating high-quality food is just like fueling an expensive car with premium fuel. Highly nutritious food that contains lots of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and nourishes the brain and protects it from oxidative stress. The MIND diet combines both DASH and Mediterranean diets, each specifically affecting brain health, which may lower your risk of mental decline.

Eating a healthy diet that consists of leafy greens, nuts, and berries may lower a person’s risk of developing a progressive brain disorder. In cases such as ADHD, depression, and other mental disorders; we see that diet has a very big impact on mental health and overall health.

Eating a diet high in omega 3, low in sugar, and high in fibers helps the brain work better. The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA are critical for normal brain function and development throughout all stages of life. These fatty acids are also vital for the maintenance of normal brain function throughout life. They are abundant in the cell membranes of brain cells, preserving cell membrane health and facilitating communication between brain cells.Nutrition for good mental health

  • Food high in antioxidants protects your skin from damage.
  • Keeps your hair and skin healthy and glowing.
  • Drinking water is very important for skin hydration, to prevent it from looking dull.
  • Eating healthy fats helps stabilize your stable mood.
  • Sugar breaks down collagen and makes you age faster.

Vitamins in supplements are actually available in the natural food we eat, they are natural and not synthetic so they work much better in the body than taking a pill.

Crave’s Coconut Chocolate Frappe Bliss

October 1, 2020
Coconut Chocolate Frappe recipe

The entire world has gone through rather frustrating times during the past few months, all of us searching for ways to relieve the stress. If you find comfort in chocolate, we’re with you. Chocolate has uplifting components, let’s take a look.

It’s quite an amazing fact, but chocolate contains over 300 chemicals including antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids, vitamins and minerals, including vitamins E, C, A and B1, B2, B3, iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron. In addition, as counterintuitive as this sounds, cocoa contains antibacterial agents that fight tooth decay!

Chocolate can create calm, it has anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects, it might extend life, improve heart health and slow the cognitive decline experienced as we age. It appears that chocolate may be less of a food and more of a drug!

Crave offered us a yummy recipe for a coconut chocolate frappe. In addition to chocolate’s miraculous mood-lifting effects, coconut helps in relieving symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome and providing extra energy. So why not give this drink a try at home? And don’t forget to spread the happiness and share it with a friend or loved one!

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Servings: 2 people

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons milk chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons shredded coconut
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • Whipping cream for topping (optional)

Method

  1. In a small cup take the sugar, shredded coconut, chocolate chips and cocoa powder and pour over about 2 tablespoons of hot but not boiling milk if needed add more. Mix until all the ingredients are mixed well.
  2. In a blender, blend the milk and chocolate, add crushed ice, and blend on high speed until the chocolate becomes frothy.
  3. Pour it in a tall glass and topped with whipped cream and shaved chocolate. Enjoy!

Five Restaurants to Tease your Palate in 01 Mall in New Cairo

October 1, 2020
best restaurants in new cairo

This review was a totally different experience, we were coming to try food from five completely different restaurants. We were in for a culinary journey through France, Italy, Mexico, the seven seas and the motherland, Egypt.

The very first idea was to open a chic café/tea room/restaurant on the molds of Parisian Ladurée. Then the idea developed into a bigger venture and a very bold move. Five distinguished and completely different restaurants, interlinked by a passage, where the experience, décor, cuisine and music, change as you enter each separate space.

Our adventure covered Amelie, French patisserie; Pipa, Italian pizza/pasta; Bonita, vibrant Mexican; fresh catches of the day at Sailor’s Catch; and Teta’s representing Egyptian comfort food. All five restaurants sharing a single, huge outdoor area.

Dishes Sampled

We loved that you can sit outdoors and order from any of the five restaurants. So if you are in a group that cannot decide what to eat, you would come, enjoy everyone’s company and still please everyone’s food cravings.

From Amelie we ordered Camembert crisps, fairly good bite sizes of cheese served with fig jam and small baby leaf salad with vinaigrette on the side. We also had Smoked Salmon Rillettes, similar to the more commonly known pate. Along with that, we were served a basket of freshly baked bread and herbed butter.

From the Mexican, we opted for a trio of tacos served with soft and hard tortilla. Our three options were: Beans and Cheese, BBQ Chicken, and Slow Cooked Beef Brisket. The tacos were instantly gone. Special mention to the tenderness of pulled beef.

The Italian brought us a sizzling wooden fire Quattro Fromaggi Pizza with a drizzle of Black Truffle Oil. Divine texture, aroma and taste. To follow, the Spinach Ravioli with white sauce and Linguine Frutti di Mare hit the spot.

Pipa’s, the Italian restaurant, makes its own dough quite evident from the freshness and softness of the pasta. This had to be our evening’s winner. Portions are quite big so it might be a good idea to order a few and just share them.best restaurants in new cairo

We couldn’t leave without trying the Beef Tenderloin. Pan-roasted beef tenderloin cooked just right that you can cut it with the fork alone. This dish is served on a bed of potato puree, smoked butter sauce and asparagus on the side.

Chapeau! As much curiosity as we had for the other restaurants, we definitely needed to book another day. Sailor’s Catch and Teta’s are to be reviewed in the near future. We happily left carrying a charming little box of lovely éclairs. The next morning’s coffee had a pleasing French feel.

Fall Glam Makeup with Aya Abdelhamid

October 1, 2020
Fall Makeup trends

By: Aliaa Elsherbini

We spoke with beautiful makeup artist Aya Abdelhamid about fall and winter makeup trends to start practicing for the upcoming season.

“This season is all about colors and playing around with eyeliner shapes,” Aya told Cairo West. “Which is surprising because usually, we associate colors with summer.” But this year, popping colors and bold eye looks are making their way to fall and winter. Here is everything new and trendy in the makeup world that Aya Abdelhamid needs you to know.

Trendy looks and Techniques:

Move away face contour lovers, as this is the year of blushes, colorful lips, and creative eyeliner techniques.

The two in-style looks to experiment with are

  1. Double liners with colored eyeshadows or two-toned eyeshadow and eyeliners in creative and unique forms. You do not need to draw the liner on your lashline anymore, and you can make that wing as big and wide as you want.
  2. Glossy and nude eyeliner and rosy cheeks with bold lipstick are a big trend. Moving away from burgundy and red while focusing instead on pink and bright orange lipsticks.

Trendy Colors:

  • Electric blue
  • Peachy tones
  • Popping pink
  • Yellow

P.S: Look out for rhinestones and be-dazzled makeup on runways and editorial photoshoots.

Elham Shahin Stars in the Film Curfew

October 1, 2020
Elham Shahin in Curfew

With a wealth of impressive performances to date, Elham Shahin brings her formidable talent to Egyptian cinemas in Curfew. We caught up with her to learn more about her role, and her thoughts on the future of the film industry in Egypt.

CW: You have excelled in leading female roles, how do you play women grappling with sensitive social and personal situations?

ES: The feelings are truly genuine when portraying these women because these situations and types of women really exist in our society. I understand how they feel and think. I hope that this shows in my performance and that the role is thought-provoking and speaks to the audience’s emotions.

Art in itself may not be the solution but it certainly helps people engage their minds and hearts when thinking up solutions for such issues.

Elham Shahin in Curfew

The interplay between you and your on-screen daughter Laila is very intense and calls for some finely wrought interchanges. How did you and Amina Khalil prepare for these parts?

The interplay between my on-screen daughter and I did not need much preparation as much as it needed us to be present in the moment so that it translates seamlessly through the acting.

What has this role meant to you on a personal level?

Roles mean more to me on an artistic level, this is because I act out situations that I may have never experienced. An actor’s job requires undivided attention to help resolve a personality problem or deliver some sort of message. This is what appeals to the audience.Elham Shahin in Curfew

What can you tell us about your hopes for the future? Both personally and for the film industry?

All my hopes for the future are tied to my family, specifically my siblings and their children and seeing them as best as they can be, from a personal level. From a cinematic level, I hope to be witnessing movies that are artistically excellent and see Egyptian cinema exceeding expectations on a national level.Elham Shahin in Curfew

Hopefully, we can raise our standards back to where we were once before when we used to produce 70 to 80 films annually, the majority of which were excellent movies, from great educational story movies to those of great writers. So basically I hope to see Egyptian cinema at its best, both domestically and internationally.

Kamel El Basha in Curfew

October 1, 2020
kamel el basha in curfew

A veteran of both stage and screen, Kamel El Basha shines with his sensitive performance in Curfew. Read our exclusive interview to get an idea about his role in the movie.

You have garnered awards and acclaim in your many performances, including The Insult. What have you learned, as a person and as an actor over these years?

I learn something new every day, I learn from the scenarios that are presented to me, I learn from the directors I work with, from the artists I share work with and from my students in the theatre. I have started to follow cinema more than before, and I am more keen on participating in work that meets my criteria. I realized that cinema today overlooks my generation, with roles written mostly for young characters, and scripts today focus on issues relating to the young.

After facing delays, Curfew is finally going to be screened at CIFF. Does this have a special emotional significance for you?

Emotionally and artistically, I yearn for the film, not only because it will be shown at the Cairo International Film Festival, but because it is my first experience in Egyptian cinema. I am very happy with the completion of the film and am excited to participate in the festival.

What can you tell us about your role in Curfew and the experience on set?

My role is Yahya Murad, Faten’s neighbor as played by Elham Shaheen. He is a loyal and loving neighbor who silences his feelings. He lives alone and endures suspicious glances from his neighbors. The experience was enjoyable, both in playing the role and interacting with the film team.kamel el basha in curfew

Where do you see the film industry in the Middle East heading in the next few years?

The Arab cinema is developing artistically and technically through the efforts of some prominent names from the Arab world, and filmmakers and distinct films, but they have not yet turned into a complete industry. The films produced in Arab countries depend on funding and their financial returns do not cover their expenses, with some very rare exceptions as in Egyptian cinemas.

So we are developing and competing technically, and we need a lot in order for our profession to turn into an industry. We need a Bollywood or Hollywood Arab city, and we need thousands of cinema theaters.

What type of roles do you most enjoy immersing yourself in?

I enjoy every role I play, convinced of its importance and the importance of the idea presented by the film. I think I am able to play all kinds of roles in all genres and enjoy them, I tried this as a stage actor and am trying it now in cinema.kamel el basha in curfew

What is coming up next?

The Corona pandemic has disrupted many of the projects that were supposed to be completed during this year, and I do not know what I can accomplish from them later. I wish that this pandemic would suddenly disappear as quickly as it appeared so that we can complete what we had planned. I was supposed to work in another Egyptian movie during April, also my agenda included another film in Palestine. The two films are waiting for life to return to normal, hopefully it will be soon.

Riva: Italian Dining by the Nile

October 1, 2020
Riva

On the river platform along which the Four Seasons boat lives, is a casual outdoor pizzeria aptly named Riva, Italian for someone who lives by a wharf or on the bank of the river. Being the fastidious pizza critics we are, and lovers of authentic Neapolitan pizza only consumed in Italy, we were ready to dig our teeth – and shrewd taste buds – into Riva’s offerings.

Riva offers a concisely curated menu, put together by Italian F&B director Mr. Michele Garbuio offers a simple and straightforward selection of traditional Italian dishes and brick oven pizza.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Signature is the pizza of course, we were first greeted with Riva’s take on the complimentary bread basket, slices of plain pizza dough baked with rosemary, (freshly plucked from the neighboring chef’s nursery, visible from where we were sitting). Served with a dynamic dip of fried onion, Parmesan and olive oil paste, a deep flavor profile with an ever so slight sweet kick that set the tone for the night.

Antipasto: We were quick to order our starter dishes, we knew exactly what we wanted, the Arancini, a mark of any consummate Italian chef, the Vitello Tonnato, a staple in restaurants in Italy, and the Caprese.

The Arancini ai Funghi – fried risotto ball with mushrooms and basil, served with tomato salsa and Parmesan fondue – was coated in a perfect golden crunch on the outside, and had a melt-in-your-mouth soft and gooey inside. This got our full approval, was likely the star antipasto for the night. The Caprese came in a rustic presentation – fresh mozzarella, tomato and basil, with splashes of pesto and olive oil on the dish – a refreshing cool bite after the warm Arancini. Also got our approval.

The Vitello Tonnato – thinly sliced, slow cooked veal fillet with tuna sauce, Parmesan and capers. The tuna sauce certainly gave this dish the salty, creamy kick that the overcooked veal fillet needed. Still enjoyable, but could have done with a thinner slice and less cooking time.

Pizza: Our pizza order soon landed at our table looking every bit as rustic as we’d imagined having just come out of the brick oven. The Margherita with cow’s milk mozzarella, tomato sauce and olive oil made for a satisfyingly chewy bite. The garlic in the sauce slightly overwhelmed, but if you’re a garlic lover like us, you’ll be well pleased. The dough was thin and pulled nicely, a mark of authentic Neapolitan style pizza.Riva

The Salsiccia pizza with tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella, smoked Scarmoza cheese, veal sausage, oregano and olive oil did not disappoint either. The smoked Scarmoza gave this pizza a more evolved flavor profile with smoky, nutty hints, while the sausage surprised our palates with bursts of spice. This probably won the pizza round.

Dessert: We opted to share a Panna Cotta as this would also be very telling of the authenticity of the cuisine, but also because the dairy and gluten overload we had just indulged in left no room in our overly satiated bellies. The Panna Cotta came covered in a berry sauce with blueberries, cherries and raspberries, shaved almonds, and cookie crumbs.

We could have done without all that fuss on top and would have been fine and dandy with a simple sauce on the side. The Panna Cotta itself however gave a good bounce-back when we dug our spoons into it, not too sweet. The perfectly smooth texture, along with the tangy sauce ended our dinner on a perfectly sweet note.

Drinks: We sipped on the house sangria, fruity and refreshing and a virgin cocktail of lemonade, cranberry juice and rosemary, a vibrant drink.

Décor & Ambiance

What you would expect from an outdoor deck or terrace. Lots of bright woods, white seating with light grey upholstery, potted plants everywhere, large fans spritzing water into the air, making for a nice, fresh breeze. The brick pizza oven in plain sight. No fuss, casual, spacious.

Clientele Mix

While our dinner took place midweek, we were told that Riva is buzzing with lunch and dinner patrons Wednesday to Friday: families, couples, groups of friends mid-twenties and up, professionals from neighboring offices.

Social Distancing

The staff is all donning masks, with sanitizer available on each table, and the sanitized cutlery presented in a small plastic bag, which we found a bit unwarranted as every time the cutlery was changed, more plastic bags piled up on our table.

Price Range: We found the prices to be on par with other authentic-style pizzerias around town, mid to high range.
