Andrea Zaffin and the Eyewear Industry in Egypt

We had the pleasure to sit down with one of the greatest figures in the eyewear industry in our region, Andrea Zaffin, Managing Director for Middle East, India and Africa for Safilo Group.

We stole a few moments from his busy day to ask him about the optics market in Egypt and Safilo’s most recent event including collections of brands like Carrera, Jimmy Choo, Hugo Boss, Kate Spade, Tommy Hilfiger, Polaroid and more.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your professional experience in the eyewear industry.

I’ve been in the industry for more than 20 years, and around the same time I started traveling and working in the middle east so I had a chance to get familiar and become passionate with these countries. The first time I came to Egypt was in 1996 and then I moved to Dubai where I live and work. I am pleased and I feel lucky to be working in the eyewear industry which has been changing and evolving rapidly.

I’ve been with Safilo for nearly 3 years as the head of Middle East, Africa and India, which I consider another important chapter in my career. This standalone region has a specific identity and special focus and attention from the company. Egypt especially is a very important country for Safilo and generally for the optical industry and that’s the reason we are having an event to reconnect with our clients and partners and to celebrate this collection.

How did the market in Egypt develop since the last time you were here?

Egypt has been going through a phenomenal growth of modern retail. The Egyptian market is well established and it is considered a reference for the region.

This country has second and third-generation opticians who are very strong and independent, they are the backbone of the industry. Local retailers are investing to provide a better experience and environment for optical products and connecting with customers.

The quality of our retailers and the level of service that we are able to provide are very important to us.

What is Safilo Decoded? What does this event mean to you as Safilo?

To open up and connect with our partners.

It is the possibility to really connect together, the past year and a half has been disrupted and we are rediscovering the pleasure of meeting with our partners again with a safe and proper protocol.

Personally, I like to focus on being in the market or in the field, meeting our clients, and visiting the stores.

What are the latest trends in the Egyptian market for eyewear?

Here you have a really good example of trends, design and new collections. The Egyptian client is very well aware of the latest fashionable designs, styles and new trends. The retailers here are also very open and up to date.

What makes Safilo brands stand out?

We are well known of our capability with beautiful designs and manufacturing high quality products, that is I would say, a strong recognition point for Safilo.

The capability to interpretate each brand and bring to life the design and the elements that distinguish the brands we work with and translate it into beautiful eyewear.

Safilo has a diverse brand portfolio, which ones do you believe fit most the Egyptian market?

We have a very complete portfolio covering all the segments. We see good growth in the mid-tier, so brands like Tommy, Carrera, Boss, Levi’s and more affordable products like Polaroid which is important in this area because it provides great protection with its polarized lenses. It is actually the first polarized eyewear ever manufactured.

And also very important the premium/luxury segment with Jimmy Choo, Marc Jacobs and Boss leading the way in Egypt.

So, in terms of range, collections, materials and price-point the coverage is very good.

What makes this collection different or special?

Every collection is special. I feel a different connection, excitement and emotion with every collection. The capability of our designers to innovate and create unique designs is incredible.

To interpretate the taste of consumers, meet the needs and expectations of our clients as well as the values and characteristics of our brands are what make a collection relevant and successful.

Are you more customer-focused or brand/product-focused?

We have to move in parallel maintaining an approach on both. We understand our customer’s needs, at the same time, we try to remain true to the DNA of our brands. For instance, Carrera has a very strong DNA and character, it is very unique and it has a strong legacy, having been in this region for decades.

Maintaining this strong connection with customers is a challenge. It’s easy to be trendy for 1 or 2 years then lose appeal. Remaining relevant in terms of proposition, offer and content for decades is hard.

eyewear

What is your advice to the optical stores in improving their business?

Become more relevant, serve clients better and make this industry bigger. With new generations, the dynamics are creating more opportunities so we need to connect with the younger generations in a different way.

I believe eyewear is still seen as more of a necessity so, the more we add to the idea of beauty, pleasure and enjoyment of new designs and styles, the stronger this industry will be.

If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

I’m always very happy to see young people taking the challenge and entering our industry. It is not a saturated market and it proved to be still growing even during Covid.

Young people who have the passion and the will to dedicate their life to enter this industry need to do it with passion, always work with professionalism and keep working hard to do it better. This will be the driver of growth for our industry and for Egypt.

12 Signs A Man Shows He Loves You Without Saying It

Ahmad Dallal Named President of The American University in Cairo

The American University in Cairo

The Board of Trustees of The American University in Cairo (AUC) announced today the appointment of Ahmad S. Dallal as AUC’s 13th president. An accomplished academic leader and renowned scholar with U.S. and regional higher education expertise, Dallal currently serves as dean of Georgetown University in Qatar.

He previously served as provost at The American University of Beirut (AUB) from 2009 to 2015. A prominent American scholar, Dallal has taught at AUB, Stanford University, Yale University, Smith College and Georgetown University, where he also served as chair of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies.

In making the announcement, Mark Turnage (ALU ’82), AUC alumnus and chair of the Board of Trustees, who was a member of the search committee, said: “We are pleased that Ahmad has agreed to serve as AUC’s next president,” he said. “AUC is a remarkable institution at a point of inflection in its history, having achieved tremendous success in its first 101 years and now ready to chart a path for its second century.

Dr. Dallal’s academic and administrative acumen, inclusive leadership style and a deep sense of purpose will serve to propel AUC to even greater heights as it navigates an increasingly changing and complex higher education landscape,” Turnage added.

With several decades of teaching, research and leadership at top universities in the United States, Dallal is a seasoned expert on U.S.-style American liberal arts universities and how they operate. Coupled with that is his extensive experience in the Middle East at both the American University of Beirut and Georgetown University in Qatar.

Commenting on his selection, Dallal said, “I am honored to join a vibrant and intellectually rich community at AUC. The University serves an important mission at a consequential moment in history and in a country and region that play a critical role on the global stage. I believe deeply that education is the engine of advancement for societies and that institutions like AUC are connectors in a world in which our futures are intertwined, as we have all witnessed firsthand through the pandemic.”

The search for AUC’s 13th president began in early fall, following President Francis Ricciardone’s announcement that he will step down at the end of the academic year in June 2021.

A Presidential Search Committee, chaired by AUC Trustee Tarek Masoud, and consisting of trustees and AUC faculty representatives, was formed. The international search to find AUC’s next president included several rounds of wide-ranging consultations with faculty, students, staff and administrators.

Dallal earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from AUB and his MA, MPhil and PhD in Islamic studies from Columbia University.

Dallal has written and lectured widely on learning in medieval and early modern Islamic societies, the development of traditional and exact Islamic sciences, medieval Islamic thought, the early-modern evolution of Islamic revivalism and intellectual movements, Islamic law, and the causes and consequences of the September 11 attacks.

A prolific scholar, Dallal has written dozens of articles, book chapters and publications, as well as several books. He is the author of An Islamic Response to Greek Astronomy: Kitab Ta‘dil Hay’at al-Aflak of Sadr al-Shari‘a (1995); Islam, Science, and the Challenge of History (2012); The Political Theology of ISIS: Prophets, Messiahs & the “Extinction of the Grayzone” (2017); and Islam without Europe: Traditions of Reform in Eighteenth-Century Islamic Thought (2018).

“Dr. Dallal has spent much of his life studying how Middle Eastern intellectuals have grappled with decline and how to reverse it. That he would cap his career as the leader of one of the region’s principal engines of development and innovation thus borders on the poetic,” said Masoud. “I have no doubt that under his leadership, AUC will write itself ever more prominently into the unfolding narrative of resurgent Middle Eastern dynamism and progress.”

Raya Smart Buildings and Galleria40’s Newest Innovation: The Plaza

galleria40

Ahmed Ibrahim, CEO of Raya Smart Buildings, and Dina El Hussamy, Marketing Manager of Raya Smart Buildings, bring us to date with the newest addition to Galleria40, The Plaza.

The concept, the inspiration, the design and the experience you get from the minute you walk in to the minute you leave. Take a peek into how Galleria40 became a hotspot in Sheikh Zayed.

With a lot of competition and new places opening up every day, how do you maintain Galleria40’s special presence?

Ahmed Ibrahim: There are definitely several factors that make Galleria40 stand out; from the construction of the project to our unique offerings. One of our great strengths would be the neat and upscale finishing of the complex, making it appealing to the eyes of high-end consumers. In addition to the variety of services we offer to multinational and international companies; with no doubt, Galleria40 becomes the number one destination on the West side.

We are also keen on applying the latest technological infrastructure aiming to create a destination with exceptional facilities like no other. To sum up, Galleria40 is one of the most inspiring places; a place where you can whirl away and get ready to take off to one of the most hospitable destinations in the West.Galleria40

Was this Raya Smart Buildings’ vision all along?

AI: Of course it is. From the onset, we have founded Raya Smart Buildings on specific goals and values that we’re all driving towards. We see ourselves as an entity that is dynamic, providing different epic experiences within every milestone.

We also strive to deliver outstanding experiences to our customers and guests filled with diverse solutions and services that create a great attachment between us and them, while also making sure that the culture in the areas in which we operate is reflected within those experiences.

Although it is challenging to always stay on the same line, we promise ourselves and our partners that we will always do what we can to make sure that our mission is accomplished and our vision achieved.

How do you provide a cultural experience to anyone who walks in?

As there is always room for development, our successful expansion in Galleria40 covers the spectrum of our cultural experience with a new twist. We call this new expansion The Plaza; an experiential hub of commercial and creative features releasing an untapped potential and offering a fresh new and highly attractive experience.

It is inspired by the Italian Piazza, from the infrastructure, the design, to the world-class dining experience and the exotic look and feel; an ideal destination where one can unwind and have an unmatched foreign experience.

How would you describe a day at the Plaza?

Dina El Hussamy: I consider it to be the perfect one-day getaway. You walk into the Plaza and immediately feel like you’re in a whole new classy experience with foreign features, surroundings, and views; from the European-inspired decorations and fountain, clock tower, the elite food hall, to the exceptional entertaining programs.

A day at the Plaza features a “Gather, Dine, and Discover” experience; a day for the family where you can gather and join a community with a distinct culture, dine in the most unique and elite restaurants, and discover yourselves through the creative and artistic elements found within The Plaza.

How does your business tenant experience respond to the needs of the existing market nowadays?

AI: From my point of view, I believe that innovation needs creativity and a relaxed mind, not just in the way we think, but also creativity within the roots; the workspace should be a space that fosters originality and not just be a good-looking office.

Nowadays, the physical spaces we move through are linked to our performance and happiness, reflecting a growing need to build elite spaces with demanded experiences and exceptional services.

Also, as we are rethinking what the workplace should look like after a post-pandemic world, we are capitalizing on one of our most successful features Edge Innovation Center aiming to meet the increased demand for more workplace flexibility maintaining all the precautions for the current circumstances of the pandemic.

What would you say makes Galleria40 unique?

DH: There is no doubt that our customers are our greatest assets and it is always our ultimate goal to improve their experiences. We start off with the core, our people and the ones behind it all.

By creating a working environment with shared values and beliefs that enforce a positive culture. This culture is engraved within the foundations of Galleria40, its tenants, and most importantly reflected on to our customers.

This customer experience is built through a selection of facilities and offerings that are not to be found elsewhere, from the high-end selection of food and beverage, entertaining programs, world-class brands, to the creative features found within our Culture Lab mentioned earlier.

Our mission is to create a story behind our customer experience, a story full of inspiration, from the minute they walk into the site to the minute they leave and long for their next visit.

How do you see the F&B mix now in Galleria40?

Our strategy for the tenant mix in Galleria40 is different. Yes, we seek anchors, but most important is the experience that will be provided for our guests by the operator. In The Plaza, Jones the Grocer and Loris are our big concepts, we brought new branches of 900 Degrees and Ama Sushi from the East side of town, while The Food District and Chez Madeline are perfect new concepts.

The Tap is one of the best nightlife destinations. Gaby’s, Mr. Pretzels, Cowabunga and Bubble Tea add new taste adventures to the options. On the other hand, we have one of the strongest food offerings in a celebration area in the West, with OVIO, Keki, Dara’s Ice Cream, Good Stuff Eatery, Starbucks, and soon-to-come Lebanese Bakery, making for a great mix.

Apart from wanting a diverse selection of cuisines, we carefully select venues that will really offer our guests a memorable experience.

Solve a Five-Minute Mystery

In this mystery challenge, you are the detective. This is a great game to play in a group or by yourself. Listen or read a five-minute mystery and try to solve it. It is very straightforward; you listen to a case that is about five minutes long and try to solve it individually or as a group.

20 Questions

Battle boredom by playing 20 questions. Pick a celebrity and everyone must guess who that celebrity is by asking 20 questions or less. It does not have to be a celebrity, it can be a type of car, dog breed, or even a movie.

I Spy…

Play this nostalgic game when on a long drive or simply stuck in traffic. For those of you who don’t know how to play this game, a passenger will look out the window and spot an object.

That person then goes off stating, ‘I spy something……..’, giving the others a clue to what that object is, usually a physical description like its color. The rest must then guess what it is. It could be something like, ‘I spy an awesome list of car games!’

Car Bingo!

This one requires a bit of preparation. At the beginning of the trip, or even before it, everyone must fill out a blank bingo sheet with all the cars they expect to find on the road trip. The same rule of bingo applies, to win, you must cross out a consecutive row, which could be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. Watch out for cheaters!

Sweet or Sour

This is a fun game when there are a lot of cars on the road. Each person takes a turn to wave to passing cars. You get one point for ‘sweet’ if they wave back, but if they don’t then you get no points ‘sour’. Bonus points if they make a funny face in return.

Go on A Picnic

This game requires concentration and a good memory. The game starts off with someone saying “I’m going on a picnic and I’m going to bring….” and then lists an item. The next person must begin with the phrase along with the item of the previous person and then list their own item.

As the list grows it becomes more difficult to remember all the items in the right order and the first person who makes a mistake loses. Or if playing elimination rounds, is out.

Band Battle

This is the game for all music fanatics. Someone picks a music category; it could be something like ‘breakup songs ’or ‘90’s music’. Two players then have 1 minute to pick a song that they believe is the best in that category.

Each plays their selected song and then the allocated car judge picks the winner. Tally up the score and the player with the most points at the end of the trip is the winner.

Let’s Create a Story

In this game, each player must take turns adding one word to create a story. By the end of the drive, you are sure to come up with one bizarre story to share.

The Hot Seat

Each person in the car gets a turn on the ‘hot seat’. Once you are in the hot seat, you must answer five questions that the other passengers ask you. To be fair, each player has one veto card that can be used to get out of answering a question.

Caution: This could be a very dangerous or fun game depending on what kind of questions you ask.

“Did You Hear That…?”

In this game, you are trying to fool your opponent. Someone starts off by asking “Did you hear that _____ happened?”. The opponent can answer by either saying ‘That did not happen’ or ‘Tell me more.’

If they correctly guess that it did not happen, they get two points, but if they get it wrong, you steal one point from them and so you gain two points in total.

Things to Pack With You for Long Road Trips

Find Out If Someone is Attracted to You From Their Body Language

body language

Knowing a little about body language is always interesting. We decided to dig deeper to learn everything about how to tell if someone is attracted to you just by looking at their body language. Here are some physical signs that show if someone is attracted to you.

By Mariam Elhamy

Did you know that your body never lies? Even if you pretend to be totally immersed in a conversation with someone but you just want to walk out the door your body will be looking in that direction.

You can tell a lot from someone’s body language and here are the secrets of the craft of communicating nonverbally. You know they like you if:

  1. They lean towards you, a person always wants to be closer to the subject of their admiration so if you find them always closing the gap to be closer to you it might be a sign of attraction. body language
  2. They remove physical barriers between you to create a clear pathway to let you into their personal space. Again, this makes you feel physically closer and makes it easier for them to reach out to you. body language
  3. They hold an open posture with arms and legs uncrossed.
  4. You see them blushing. Be mindful of the context though because they might be flushed if it’s warm or they feel embarrassed or humiliated. But blushing can be an indicator of a rush of adrenaline or excitement to be with you.body language
  5. They look upward at your face rather than down at their feet, the table, or their phone. body language
  6. They smile a lot, pay attention to what you are saying and mirror what you are doing (stealing your hand gestures, position, blinking and breathing pattern.
  7. Their voice changes. Men tend to deepen their voice to appear more dominant while women turn to a high-pitched tone to stand out and be noticed by the person they are attracted to.body language
  8. If their pupils dilate when they look at you it could be a powerful sign of attraction.
  9. Sweaty palms could mean that they are nervous around you.

You know a man likes you if he flexes, raises an eyebrow, sits with his legs open and shoulders relaxed, stands with his hands on his hips and keeps eye contact. body language

You know a woman likes you if she strokes her hair, licks her lips, tilts her head to one side, keeps her purse out of the way, displays her wrists often, touches your shoulder, hair or hands.
