Music Scene: Frankey & Sandrino

Frankey & Sandrino

By: Mariam Elhamy

The DJs, producers and live act duo Frankey & Sandrino joined forces in 2010, they started out as solo artists with Sandrino’s passion for house music and Frankey, a schooled musician with a string of releases behind him. Together they released music on Innervisions, Mule Musiq, Bedrock, and Kompakt. Throughout 2019 they’ve made appearances on Diynamic, Poker Flat, Drumpoet Community, and Cin Cin. They also have a record label together, Sum Over Histories. January 2020 will see them release a four track EP on Watergate Records. Frankey & Sandrino will be playing at Cairo Jazz Club on December 12th and we’ve interviewed them to find out more about their music.

Tell us about your experience doing a world tour? Which country has been your favorite so far? Which has the best audience?

S: I consider travelling as part of my job as a privilege and I’m very grateful for that. Every country or city I go to I really do try to explore a bit, even if the schedule is very tight or I feel tired from the night before. Besides music, food is a very important part of my life and my touring routine. I make sure I always try the local cuisine; it’s a good glimpse of the country’s long-existing culture.

I  like the diversity between audiences in terms of expression, the ‘closed eye dancers’ but also the ‘going nuts’ crowd.

F: Australia because of their overwhelming mentality and Japan, because it feels a little bit like another planet.

What single night out has been the most memorable for you? As a DJ? As an attendee?

S: When I play freely and I can express myself the way I see or hear the music. Short set times (2h) have crept in as a standard for DJs to play. I/we prefer to play long sets for at least 3-4 h or All-Nighters, this gives me more time to take the people with me, experiment and create waves of emotions.

F: A DJ gig I did in 2015 at Kater Blau, Berlin. I felt like I played the perfect set there for a perfect crowd. I’m very critical regarding track selection, track order and mixing but it couldn’t have been any better. As an attendee: Rainbow Serpent Festival, Melbourne Australia 2017. No words can describe why this is the best festival in the world – You have to be there….

How did it all start for you?

S: Very easy, attending a Rave in the early 90’s…

The sparkle of Techno & House took over me and would never ever let me go again. Quite the reverse – it gets stronger the older I become.

F: I’ve been making music all my life. I started playing the piano when I was around 8, then later Bass-guitar. I did nearly every kind of music but got into electronic music a little bit later then Sandrino; around mid 90’s.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

S: Everything can be inspirational; family, nature, certain emotional experiences or even music. I try to be open to everything that happens and not limit myself.

F: Everything I hear, that I’ve never heard before, inspires me. Unfortunately that doesn’t happen too much anymore.

What is one mistake you see a lot of up and coming DJs making? / What advice would you give to aspiring DJs?

S: Trying too hard to fit in. Be completely free & unprejudiced when it comes to music and just find yourself in it. You don’t want to be a copycat of a copycat of a copycat…

F: Young DJs try to create an image instead of a musical identity, but I’m not sure if I should advise against it because sadly this strategy seems to work nowadays.

Where do you think the scene is headed?

S: This is more wishful thinking, but I imagine a musical world without social media ruling it where we dedicate our attention to the music and not the visual illusion created around it.

F: I find it kind of fascinating how music styles always circle back. Currently the hip sound is 130 bpm Acid-Techno, which to me sounds very old. So, I’m pretty sure that everything comes back at a certain point, but my hopes are that something new shows up, something totally unexpected that redefines things.

If you could eternally be stuck in one year’s music scene, which year would it be?

S: I don’t like any sort of limitations, every snapshot in time has its eligibility and gives you something greater than you may expect.

What is it that you love about the scene? What is something that bugs you about the DJ scene?

S: My love for music is what keeps my motivation to learn, improve, and experiment…

F: Honestly I feel that the DJ Scene is a little bit overrated (and overpaid) at the moment.

When I was young, I played with some outstanding Jazz musicians, maybe the best musicians I have ever met. They dedicated their whole life to practicing their instruments for 6-8 hours every day and learned as much music theory as possible. Sadly these people earned just a fraction, compared to some average DJs today and that just feels wrong. Of course, there are a few exceptions out there, Dj’s that put the maximum effort and passion into Djing. But they are often not the most successful ones…

What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?

S: I think I would go crazy just starting to think about naming only one song. Music is very much connected to emotions & moods it’ll change constantly.

But I can tell you what flashed me today on my flight back home; I listened to the new LP by The Orangen. It blew me away from start to finish.

F: First thing that came to mind: Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen.

What are you excited the most about visiting Egypt?

S: I’ve been to Cairo only once and my stay couldn’t have been better. We had a great night at The Temple then we visited the Pyramids. One of the most overwhelming places I’ve been allowed to see & experience in my life. Can’t wait to come back.

F: The pyramids were amazing and were already on my bucket list, and the event at The Temple was better than all my expectations. Looks like there is a really healthy electronic music scene in Cairo.

Kaya Restobar in Heliopolis

Kaya Restobar is the outcome of a group of family and friends with a passion for dining and fun times together. Located in Sheraton, Heliopolis, the French-inspired and international themed restaurant’s menu also offers a few Brazilian dishes and a full bar. We had a taste of some of their items to let you in on what we found impressive and how our dining experience went.

Dishes Sampled

With a longish menu, we were spoiled for choice. We started with three best-sellers, Cache-Cache, Toast de Champignon Provençale and Fillet de Bouef Acebolado. The Cache- Cache (meaning hide or cover in French) is a dish consisting of small chunks of chicken breast served between layers of creamy mashed potatoes covered with crust of grated cheese, topped with cherry tomato halves. The tasty Mushroom Provençale was stuffed with herbs and tomatoes, topped with breadcrumbs and grated cheese on a toast base. The only downside was the small size of the portion (only 5 pieces).

It was surprising to see a Brazilian classic appetizer on the menu, Bife Acebolado is served in most bars around Brazil, but this version came with an extra French touch. Thick strips of beef fillet prepared with onions and garlic with a thick, gravy-like sauce, served with toasted bread. The toasted bread slices helped mop up the thick sauce.

We enjoyed sipping our cocktail and sangria while waiting for our mains: Entrecote Buerre Café du Paris and Steak de Saumon Frais Flambe au Poivre Noir. All main dishes are accompanied by two sides. For the Café du Paris, we opted for fries and spinach gratin, whereas for the salmon we chose smashed potatoes and also the spinach. The Café du Paris was slightly well done for our taste, the same with the Salmon, which we prefer rather pinkish. The Salmon Steak Black Peppercorn sauce was quite rich and blended very well with the fish. We finalized our evening with nice live music and a trio of small bowls of Crème Brûlée.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

Crevettes Gratinees (old-fashioned shrimp gratin served with basil sauce) and the Etuvee de Volaille et Crevettes Sauce Whisky (a combination of chicken breast and shrimp in one dish).

Beverages include cold and hot drinks – and a fully-fledged bar serving a nice selection of cocktails.

Décor and Ambience

The restaurant interior is chic and sleek. The seating arrangements have been thoughtfully considered. There are three main areas indoors: the lounge, the bar and the “Street” which is the most casual area, resembling a real street, from the posters on the walls, to the tiles on the floor. There is also a terrace where clients can enjoy a shisha. The lounge area consists of a long blue velvet couch and separate tables. The lighting and sound systems can be dimmed, giving this area a more intimate and cozy atmosphere. The bar area has very nice high tables on the side and many chairs along its counter right in front of the DJ island. The Street area is funky and bold, and can be easily transformed into a dance floor, with access to the terrace through a folding glass door.

Clientele Mix: Friends, couples, families

Price Range: Reasonably priced

Worth Noting: Besides the DJ and live entertainment every week, there is a VIP exclusive entrance door through the parking garage and valet service.

Chase the Sun this Winter in Aswan, Ein Sokhna, Marsa Alam & Siwa!

We never need to kiss summer goodbye in Egypt! Head south we say, travel to the uncrowded beaches of the Red Sea, or the traditional charm of Aswan, or even west into the expanses of the Siwa desert. Whatever your budget, inclination to exercise (or not), and cultural interests, each of these destinations offers something for everyone, from tots and teens up to seniors.

Aswan

This idyllic location has been high on everyone’s winter escape list since time immemorial. Rich in history, with some of the most stunning archeological sites in the country, it also has a vibrant local Nubian culture. It’s hard to beat the combination of amazingly clean air, culture, and a friendly, welcoming ambience.

Where to stay:

Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan Hotel: This is a splurge experience, but totally worth it. Dating back to 1899, the hotel is steeped in history, having hosted royalty, statesmen and famous figures throughout the years, and exudes a vintage charm. Throw in superb cuisine and gracious hospitality, along with breathtaking views of the sparkling Nile and the desert beyond and you have the makings of a holiday of a lifetime.

Agilika Lodge: Agilika Lodge on Heissa Island, nestled between the Aswan High Dam and the Aswan reservoir, offers simple pleasures at the other end of the spectrum, albeit no less charming. Accommodation is in traditional Nubian style rooms, sleeping between two and five persons with shared bathroom amenities, in pristine condition. Meals are healthy, tasty and based on local cuisine, and guests have plenty of space to lounge and relax while enjoying views over the Nile.

What to do:

Spice Market: Any visit to Aswan must include the Spice Market. Arguably the most fascinating in Egypt, it not only offers a huge variety of spices like cloves, cinnamon, saffron, bergamot, pepper and nutmeg, along with the ubiquitous dried karkade, but also traditional crafts, galabeyas and local fabrics.

Nubian Museum: Fascinating and beautifully laid out, the Nubian Museum was created in cooperation with UNESCO in 1997. It is dedicated to the art, history and culture of the region, chronicling its history dating back to 4500 BC.

First time visitors should also make a point of seeing the main sights like Philae, Elephantine Island, the High Dam and the Mausoleum of Agha Khan. And nothing beats a leisurely felucca ride on the Nile, just before sunset we suggest. Don’t forget to check for festival and local music events while you are there.

Ein Sokhna

A short drive from Cairo, Ein Sokhna enjoys balmy weather throughout the winter, making it a perfect weekend break. It may not boast the sightseeing attractions of some other locations, but with plenty of water sports on hand, and fresh sea breezes, it is a good place to chill out and relax.

Where to stay:

Jaz Little Venice Golf Resort: Offering every amenity, and with direct access to Ein Sokhna’s beautiful beach, Jaz Little Venice Golf Resort is a great choice for golfers and non-golfers alike. Two excellent restaurants offer varied dining options, and guests can enjoy the 18-hole championship golf course at Sokhna Golf Club with an added change.

Mövenpick Resort El Sokhna: Relax, unwind or get active with a range of water sports at Mövenpick Resort El Sokhna. The hotel enjoys a private beach and panoramic sea views, along with great dining options. It is handy to know that the hotel also provides a babysitting service, so mom and dad can take a breather.

What to do:

Golf, kitesurfing, fishing, scuba diving! Infinity Kitesurfing Center is located in Belagio compound and offers beginner lessons, kite and gear rental. The international standard 9-hole golf course at the Jaz Little Venice Golf Resort offers challenging greens, fairways and bunkers to suit both experienced golfers and novices.

Marsa Alam

For a scuba diving, fishing and watersports focused break, head further south to the pristine beaches of Marsa Alam.  Not your thing? Then just laze and swim and enjoy the blissful scenery, abundant nature and wildlife.

Where to stay:

Jaz Grand Marsa: Located right on the beach at Marsa Alam, Jaz Grand Marsa is 10 minutes from Marsa Alam International Airport. The hotel offers a host of amenities and activities for all ages, making it an ideal choice for a family break out of town.

Steigenberger Coraya Beach: If a break without the kids is just what you need, this is the ideal spot. Located on the in Coraya Bay, the adults-only five star resort Steigenberger Coraya Beach offers pure relaxation and  superb cuisine in this Nubian style ambience. Leisure amenities include three swimming pools, an 800 meter sandy beach and a dive center.

What to do:

Dive, snorkel and swim! Or enjoy a visit to the desert and discover the abundant flora and fauna of the Wadi Gemal National Park. Day treks with Bedouin guides are easily arranged through most hotels.

Siwa

Isolated and still unspoilt, Siwa has a unique beauty. Just 50km from the Libyan border, Siwa sits about 25m below sea level, and has everything you would expect from oasis life. Small lanes strung with mudbrick homes, olive trees and verdant palms, along with clear springs which offer relief from the sun.

Where to stay:

Taghaghien Island: A secluded paradise, Taghaghien Island is set on 38,000 m2 of land within the great Lake of Siwa. It offers offer a peaceful escape from the stress of city life. The spectacular turquoise waters of the lake contrast with imposing limestone rock formations, green fields, and golden desert sands. In the center of the island lies a Roman Cold Spring, surrounded by lush fields and palm trees. With 30 rustic style bungalows, and a café/restaurant, the lifestyle is refreshingly simple. With such a glorious setting, who could want more?

What to do:

The area has a host of attractive sites worth visiting, if you can shake yourself out of a super-relaxed mode. Check out the Fortress of Shali, Bir Wahed, Temple of the Oracle, Cleopatra’s Spring and the Tomb of Si Amun. You will also find excellent natural olive oil, so stock up while there.

6 Facts About Supplements and How to Use Them

We can’t escape it. On a daily basis we are being challenged to be healthier, fitter, stronger, and more youthful. If it isn’t social media, it comes as direct peer pressure. Are supplements the answer?  Certified nutritionist and health coach Dr. Shady Labib of Shady Labib Nutrition and Nutivate online nutrition coaching tells us what we need to now, and dispels a few myths in the process.

What do you need to know when considering using supplements?

  • You don’t need supplements unless you have a measured deficiency or a specific need. The necessary tests, such as blood picture etc., should be carried out before supplements are prescribed or recommended.
  • We have seen a frenzy of people loading up on supplements without knowing what they actually do and the impact on their bodies. We need to de-mystify the subject.
  • The supplements market is not regulated by the FDA and most of the claims used on packaging and brochures are misleading, with the sole purpose of creating profit for the companies.
  • Research has proven over and over again that nutrients from food are much superior to supplements. A supplement should always be secondary to a healthy diet, not a replacement. Science has proven that the quality of nutrients from food is much more effective when it comes to health and longevity.
  • Before use, people need to know why they need a specific supplement, if at all.
  • If a supplement is recommended by a medical professional, the use has to be clearly defined.

When do you actually need supplements?

  • A deficiency exists: There are hundreds of supplements in the market. But again, they are only beneficial for people with specific recognized needs, namely a vitamin or mineral deficiency, such as a Vitamin B12 deficiency in vegans or to support athletic performance.
  • Special cases: Elite athletes can sometimes be deficient in glutamine, an amino acid that gets burnt quickly for example in marathon runners. As they can be susceptible to colds, and respiratory problems glutamine can be very beneficial. There are also a few supplements that could protect the muscles from breaking down, and prevent injury and reduce sickness.
  • Convenience: The third factor is convenience. When life gets hectic and regular balanced meals go by the wayside, whey protein is very useful in filling the gap. This doesn’t mean you should skip healthy regular meals though, and we all know a few people who seem to have an aversion to vegetables. Say hello to vegetable powders and supplements, a good way to ensure that the essential nutrients are part of the meal plan.

Four important supplements that fitness enthusiasts are likely to need:

Whey protein. There are several misconceptions about this, but it is generally safe when used in recommended amounts, unless you have a liver or kidney disease. And don’t worry about the theory that it causes women to ‘bulk up’. That is not the case.

Creatine, for power athletes who need an extra boost to reach their targets.

Don’t forget that Omega 3 is very important in any diet, as it has multiple benefits, including reducing blood triglycerides, a contributing factor to heart disease.

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). These are a group of three essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine and valine. BCAA supplements have been shown to build muscle, decrease muscle fatigue and alleviate muscle soreness.

How are supplements often misused?

People often take supplements without being aware of the specific use for each. They take inaccurate dosages, and incorrect supplements for the purpose they require. For example, creatine, which is often used by people for sustaining energy when running long distances, instead of as a quick power boost.

Stimulant supplements, which often contain caffeine are often used prior to working out. This can be risky as they raise the blood pressure and heart rate, which can lead to serious consequences.

Should a doctor be consulted before using supplements?

Most over-the-counter supplements are safe when used correctly, but in the case of pregnancy or specific medical conditions it is important to seek medical advice.

If a person is following a healthy, balanced diet, are supplements necessary?

Definitely not, so long as you are following a full balanced, healthy diet, although with a vegan diet certain supplements can be required. It is always advisable to do annual blood tests and to monitor vitamin and mineral levels. Of course, if any deficiency is detected, make sure to consult your doctor.

A final word of advice:

There are a lot of misleading marketing scams out there, so don’t be fooled by them. The main focus should be on following a healthy diet, and consulting a nutritionist or dietitian if you think supplements might be needed.

Sushi Circle in Cloud 9 Mall

On a busy mid-week evening we arrived at Cloud 9 Mall to try out Sushi Circle, a spinoff brand of Luka’s bistro, now serving Japanese food under a Sushi Circle exclusive menu.

Dishes Sampled

We came for the sushi so we went straight to the point and ordered a 20 pieces combo which we took upon the chef’s recommendation. Our Combo consisted of 2 pieces of Nigiri Sushi, 4 pieces of Hosomaki, 4 pieces of the house special Pinky Roll and 8 pieces of Uramaki. The sushi platter arrived just after our first sips of a refreshing lemon mint juice – preserving our taste buds for the coming tasting. Our items were neatly presented on a black stone platter, garnished with a bed of shredded daikon radish on the side, along with wasabi paste and Japanese pickled ginger – two basic staples of any order. We had 2 eel Nigiri sushi, which was easily eaten in a bite or two. The eel was fresh, topped with teriyaki sauce – traditionally used for grilled eel fish. Our Salmon Maki Rolls were just right and bite sized. The Pinky Roll, a house special, consists of a bigger sized rice roll filled with avocado and kani meat (pressed crab) wrapped in seaweed and topped with a slim slice of shrimp. The last item on our Combo was the avocado Uramaki, filled with salmon and topped with a nice layer of avocado.

Other Menu Options that Appealed and Beverages Available

Hot rolls, a must try on future visits. Both cold and hot drinks are available.

Décor and Ambience

The interior is modern with fewer tables than the outside area, which stands along a big terrace in front of the mall façade. The seats are comfortable and tables area easily movable to accommodate bigger groups.

Clientele Mix: College students, groups of friends, families.

Price Range: Quite reasonable compared to sushi prices around town.

Worth Noting: Shisha is available, along with backgammon and playing cards. There are also TV screens displaying matches.
