Noubi aka Nubia

We had a sit-down with rising star Noubi aka Nubia whose popularity has grown rapidly in a very short period. Noubi’s DJing journey began seven years ago when a friend gave him a four-channel controller and taught him how to use it. His first gig at The Tap, Maadi, which also happened to fall on his birthday, became Noubi’s most memorable performance for him. Inspired by many on the local and international scene, Noubi perhaps looks up to Black Coffee the most for his skillful ability to mix tracks live so seamlessly using only his right hand.

What makes a good/booming night for a DJ?

Reading the crowd is the key. I guess it’s about how you take them to your journey while they’re enjoying a smooth ride.

If you could eternally be stuck in one year’s music scene, which year would it be?

2004’s Trance music scene was lit!

What is one subgenre you think doesn’t get the attention it deserves?

Uplifting Trance is so underrated nowadays, people who listen to trance are a bit more into progressive and psytrance.

What is it that you love about the scene?

The scene is getting bigger each year, the diversity exists and that’s what I like the most. DJs are expressing themselves more through their music and not just playing for the spotlight.

What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?

I believe Armin van Buuren’s ‘Mirage’ is timeless. Rampa’s ‘Muye’ as well!

What festivals would you most like to play?

I’d love to play at ADE, Ultra Music Festival, and EDC.

What was your favorite night at The Tap so far?

A night at The Tap West playing alongside DJunkie, AK and Alsharif was a great experience!

Who’s your favorite band/DJ)? And which artist from the scene would you like to share the decks with?

My favorite DJ is a big name in the trance music scene, his name is Giuseppe Ottaviani.

I’d love to share the decks with Tourkey & Selim, Aladdin, and Yo-lan-Da. Playing B2B with my best friends is something I’m looking forward to.

Superstar Youssra Gets Awarded by America Abroad Media

By: Mariam Elhamy

America Abroad Media (AAM) honored Egyptian superstar Youssra at its seventh annual Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C. AAM honors outstanding leaders whose work meets international standards and exemplifies the power of media to inform, educate and empower.

AAM’s recognition of Youssra’s career throughout time comes as a brief example of the history of Egypt’s entertainment industry for American viewers. Egypt’s entertainment industry serves its role as a catalyst for community dialogue, its sustainable resonance in the Arab world and the ability to address taboos and project positive voices for positive change.

Youssra is an Egyptian star with a long career of great work, working with some of the most important Egyptian directors and writers like Youssef Shaheen, Ali Badrakhan, Waheed Hamed, Sharif Arafa, Raafat Al-Mihi, Khairi Bishara, Samir Seif and Marwan Hamed. She was selected as a Goodwill Ambassador and received numerous honors at various festivals; most notably the French Festival de Cannes, the Cairo International Film Festival and the Beirut International Festival in Lebanon. In addition, she was honored by the Royal Society of Physicians in London and the Institute of the Arab World in Paris. She was also selected as a member of the Oscar Academy Committee in 2019.

“Youssra is an icon in the Middle East and a real inspiration to millions of her fans, whether through her acting as a screen actress or her dedication to serve her community and create a better world,” said Aaron Lobel, founder and president of the American Association for Foreign Media. Yousra stated, “I am proud to be representing my country and the Arab community in an award of this value and importance, and very happy and honored to celebrate the honoring of my work with such an esteemed award.”

Youssra was also congratulated by some of the most important American representatives for her award, most notably star Harvey Keitel. “When I first met you in Cairo, you invited us to a dinner that you had humbly made yourself and you took us for a walk in the streets of Cairo, where we saw a great reflection of your place in your fans’ hearts, which is no different from your special place in the cinema… Congratulations, you deserve this award and more.”

Vanessa Williams said, “Dear Youssra, congratulations on the award you received tonight from AAM. I am so happy that you are getting recognized and awarded by AAM for all your work and iconic career. I saw how much love and admiration you get from your fans in Egypt and the Middle East when I was in El Gouna and Dubai. Through your great art and your constant support for women’s rights, everything you do on the screen is genius and exhilarating, and that makes you an exceptional star and a role model for all the women of the Middle East. Congratulations!”

“Yousra is an incredibly talented actress,” said Jay Weissberg of Variety magazine. “I can talk about her various amazing roles in the classics of Egyptian cinema and Ramadan series, and I can talk about her constant support to her colleagues and new filmmakers. But what I’d really like to talk about is how popular she is because I’ve traveled with her a few times and I’ve never seen any actor/actress get so much love from their audience. Once she walks into a room, happiness fills the hearts of everyone in it and she is greeted with warm welcoming smiles everywhere whether in Morocco, Abu Dhabi or Egypt. Yousra is an exceptional star and a rare gem.”

In addition, Yousra was congratulated by the artists and stars of the Egyptian industry. Director Marwan Hamed expressed his happiness, saying, “Yousra is one of the most important actresses in the history of Egyptian cinema. Her career is rich in diversity and she plays a great humanitarian role in her life, which always shows in her acting. I hold a lot of love and appreciation for her, especially because of her support when I started with Yacoubian Building and the many more people that she has supported. We are talking about an honest and a true actress and a very honorable representation of Egyptian cinema, and we are all proud to work in an industry that includes a figure of such worth and greatness.

“Yousra was always a star from the beginning,” said Naguib Sawiris. “Her performance is so convincing and spontaneous that I think she follows the legacy of the great star Souad Hosni. Yousra is one of the brightest and most honest stars in the film industry. Her role in cinema continues and never stops as she is one of the most important models in Egyptian cinema. On a personal note, she has been a very dear friend for a long time, and this is something I am particularly honored about. On her humanitarian side, she does not need my words to highlight her constant support to everyone.”

Sherine Reda congratulated Yousra by saying “Yousra is a legend, a living legend without a doubt. She is a wonderful person and a great actress, since I first started working with her she had always been there by my side, always present for everyone. Congratulations Siva, and I hope to see you as soon as possible to congratulate you in person, you deserve all the best.”

The author, Tamer Habib, said, “She is everything for me and I think that those who don’t know her in person are missing a lot in their life! She is a moving love story and has great positive energy on and off set. She is always there for all of us and we all owe her. She is one of the most loved five people I have ever met and I am really lucky to have known her in my life.”

Director Enas al-Deghaidy also congratulated her saying, “Yousra is a beautiful person, an actress who has influenced Arab and Egyptian cinema. By the way, she is very famous around the world cinema as a front-row actress in Egyptian cinema, that’s aside her great relationships with foreign actors and filmmakers.”

Former AAM winners include Oscar-winning director Catherine Bigelow for The Hurt Locker, director Paul Greengrass for Captain Phillips, Noura Al Kaabi twofour54 chief executive in Abu Dhabi, Princess Reem Ali founder of the Jordan Media Institute, Tunisian actress Hend Sabri, Saudi comedian Nasser Al-Kassabi, journalist writer Turki Al-Dakhil, Egyptian author Wahid Hamed, Egyptian director Marwan Hamed and others.

AAM is a foundation that supports global storytelling through the power of entertainment. AAM’s vision is to bring together the best Hollywood talents and the creative community in the Middle East to enable a new generation of storytellers in the region to produce innovative content that promotes positive change and shared global values.

Ibtihal El Serety in When We’re Born: “Scenes with anger and violence were very difficult”

Lama Bntweled - Lama Bntweled

With cinematic talent in her genes, Ibtihal El Serety is sure to wow audiences with her role in When We’re Born. El Serety went through a rollercoaster of emotions to play Aida, the traditional Egyptian woman facing hardships in her marriage. We spoke with the star about the obstacles she faced while filming, and how director Tamer Ezzat and her co-star Amr Abed had her back during the filming process.

Tell us about your role in When We’re Born (Lama Bntweled).

I play Aida, a strong married woman passing through some difficult times. We see how she overcomes her hardships and how much she loves her husband. She’s a traditional Egyptian woman.

What were some obstacles you faced with this role?

The one-shot scenes were some of the hardest things about this movie. We had to do a lot of things at the same time in one shot; remember lines, focus on many aspects, and channel different feelings. All that during a long period of time, which was challenging.

Scenes involving anger and violence were also very hard. Amr Abed and I are not used to these expressions of anger in our personal lives, both physically or emotional.

Did you have to prepare a lot for your role especially with Amr Abed since you play husband and wife on screen?

Lama BntweledYes, absolutely. Amr and I had to prepare a lot. We used to meet and rehearse the scenes to get comfortable before filming. Sort out the technical things so you could focus on portraying emotions. Thankfully director Tamer Ezzat coached us a lot and taught us how to move without forgetting or messing up, especially since the shooting locations where unusual. We had to have a feel for the dimensions of the space, because the locations were small and tight for space.

What was it like working with Tamer Ezzat as a director?

Tamer is a wonderful director. He is a sensitive person. He feels the actor and aims to bring out the best in them. He was so close to the cast and gave us all the self-confidence and support we needed on a professional and personal level.

On a personal level, did you like the movie?

I loved it! I loved it very much! I love the music. I love how all the characters were portrayed. All this touched me as a member of the audience. I hope the people sense that, too. We are missing musical works, it’s good to have them in our cinematic history. I am very proud!

Without revealing anything, tell us your favorite scene in the movie.

My favorite scene was with Amr, walking down the street looking at things to buy for the apartment which leads to a dispute, but then we are nice to each other after a few moments. These contradicting emotions are hard, but fun to shoot.

Crave: The Perfect Omelet

A classic breakfast dish that anyone can whip up in no time, all a guy needs are a few staple ingredients you already have at home. Who doesn’t love a fluffy omelet to start the day? C’mon men, let’s get cooking!

Ingredients:

  • 3 large eggs
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ⅛ tsp black pepper
  • 3 tsp olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped vegetables (tomatoes, onions, mushrooms)
  • ¼ cup cheese (optional)

Preparation:

  1. In a medium bowl, use a fork or whisk to vigorously beat the eggs, salt, and pepper until totally homogenized. Set aside to rest for about 15 minutes.
  2. Meanwhile, in a heavy-bottomed nonstick 10-inch skillet, heat 1 tsp oil on medium. Cook the vegetables till tender, 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer them to a bowl and keep warm.
  3. Wipe out the skillet; add the remaining 2 tsp oil and heat it on medium, about 1 minute. Swirl the oil to coat the bottom of the skillet.
  4. Add the eggs and cover the pan. In exactly 2½ minutes, remove the lid. If the surface is wet but the eggs look set, proceed to the next step.
  5. Put the lid back on, wait 30 seconds, and check again. Repeat this step as needed until your eggs are the consistency you want.Add the fillings to half the omelet. Run a silicone spatula around the perimeter of the omelet and then fold the empty side over. Finally, use the spatula to gently push the omelet out of the pan and onto a plate.
  6. Add cheese as a filling (optional).

Artist Lamiaa ElShabrawy Unveils her Second Solo Exhibition at Samah Art Gallery

Ahead of her second solo exhibition at Samah Art Gallery in Galleria40, artist Lamiaa ElShabrawy us that “The Talk of Butterflies and the Chaos of the Universe” builds on the concept of the ‘butterfly effect’ in all its forms and reverberations. The exhibition examines and reflects upon the life cycle of the delicate butterfly, from her struggle to unbind herself from her cocoon and free her fragile wings. This dramatically inspiring moment of a biological process mirrors the moment when women embrace their need for freedom and emancipation.

CWM: Can you tell us more about how you approached this?

My work in the exhibition captures the path of any woman who changes her life journey to realize her active role in the world, which is primarily built on the weakest thing she owns. In this group, my second experiment, this relationship is monitored in formative binaries that link the butterfly wings, this delicate being, and women’s struggle with society in a reality that rejects, with all its power, to recognize their active role and effect.

What should we know about you?

I am a contemporary artist born in 1977, who graduated from the printed design division of the Faculty of Fine Arts in 2000.

What message do you seek to transmit?

In our daily lives, I have realized that there is an ongoing community dialog in defense of the important role that women play in our Arab societies from one side and one of the erroneous legacies of society’s view of women, now forcing us to struggle to return to what is self-evident and inherent right.

How would you describe your work?

My work is detailed and harmonious, and I have a clear interest in the inside of man rather than his appearance. This artistic philosophy has been the main feature of my work since my graduation.

My previous exhibitions include:

  • Individual exhibition in 2013 under the title “Mixed Senses”, Al Jazeera Center for the Arts, Al Zamalek.
  • Collective exhibitions and artistic workshops, including a collective exhibition in the opening of the new book exhibition headquarters in 2019, “Visual Reading in the Poems of Salah Jahin and Fuad Haddad”, Galerie Dy, 2019, Silk Screen workshop “Siwa Art Studios” in Al Jazeera Center for the Arts, El Zamalek, 2018.
  • “Visual Reading in Affify Mattar Poems” exhibition, Galerie Dy, 2017, the celebrative exhibition for “Luxor – Arab Culture Capital” in 2017, Artist Book Fair, Mahmoud Mokhtar Museum, 2016, Friends of Manial Palace Museum Society, Zamalek Art Gallery, 2016, National Graphic Exhibition Fourth Session, 2016, “Black and White II” exhibition, Al Jazeera Art Center, 2015, Graphic Gallery, Atelier Cairo, 2013, Twenty Second Youth Salon, 2011, Cordoba’s First Salon, Córdoba Gallery, 2011, El Bashair Gallery, the Hall of the Union of Artists, 1998, and Faculty of Fine Arts exhibition, main hall, 1998.

Venue: Samah Art Gallery, Galleria 40, Sheikh Zayed

Event date: 17th of November 2019
