The Tap: Close Encounter with Techno House DJ Yolanda

We had a sit-down with rising star Yolanda whose music made waves in a short period since her debut, and who shared the stage with international performers like Remcord and Lunar Plane.

Music started very early for Yolanda. She began learning how to play multiple instruments like piano and violin when she was 6 years old, and eventually, she stuck with the drums. Earlier this year, Yolanda decided to take a shot at deejaying and quickly developed a passion for it.

Of her biggest inspirations is her absolute favorite producer/DJ Boys Noize, whose raw sounds and deep and very distinct basslines move her. She also really likes SAMA’, Amelie Lens, SCNTST, Javascript, and SRVD.

Her September performance at The Tap Maadi was one of Yolanda’s most memorable performances, “I was in a great mood,” she recalls, “the crowd’s energy was amazing, and I played a very nice opening set for AlSharif.”

Checkout how Yolanda did with the quick Q&A’s we fired at her:

What makes a good/booming night for a DJ?

Good ambiance, a crowd that’s there to listen to new music, and no track requests.

If you could eternally be stuck in one year’s music scene, which year would it be?

90s Techno for sure!

What is one subgenre you think doesn’t get the attention it deserves?

Destroy Techno, it’s my favorite genre. There are lots of cool producers that make very distinctive tracks that aren’t as exposed to the scene as they should be.

What is it that you love about the scene? Your subgenre’s scene?

I enjoy that the crowd is open to being introduced to new music and new tracks. I like dropping something different every once in a while, and I love how the crowd interacts with it.

What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?

Take Me Down by Djedjotronic.

What is one track that is popular that you can’t stand?

Every single Ariana Grande song.

What festivals would you most like to play?

Dour, DGTL, Dekmantel, Sonar, Cercle, and Awakenings.

If you had the power to abolish one musical genre, which one would it be?

Country music. Don’t even get me started.

30 North in Zamalek

This Egyptian specialty coffee shop has made a splash on the west side with two branches open in Sheikh Zayed, and now the brand is expanding to central Cairo with a spacious branch in the newly refurbished ICONIA building in Zamalek (formerly known as the AUC dorms). We visited for the weekend brunch and left impressed.

Signature Drinks

30 North boasts 20-25 different kinds of coffee, and is the only member of the Specialty Coffee Association, staff are fully certified by the SCA and can help customers navigate the extensive coffee menu and seven different types of coffee brewing.

Signature Dishes

Salmon Eggs Benedict, Veggie Eggs Benedict, Scrambled Eggs on a Bagel, Shrimp Avocado Salad, Goat Cheese Salad, Philly Cheesesteak, and the Avocado Smoked Salmon on Toast count as signature plates.

Dishes Sampled

After an educational introduction to the coffee making process at 30 North, we selected our beans and brewing method of choice for the morning. The barista certainly helped, and assured us that freshness is guaranteed for each cup of coffee, as only the right amount of beans needed for the branch are roasted each day so as not to go stale. We opted for the Clever method of brew, which steeps the coffee slowly at a temperature below boiling in small batches. The Indonesian Flores bean we selected gave a smooth and lower acidity drink, similar to a tea. It was very pleasant and just right to prime our palate for the delicious brunch ahead.

The Roast Turkey Breast and Emmental sandwich comprised of a fresh baguette filled with generous slices of roast turkey, prepared in-house, topped with Dijon mustard, lettuce, tomato, and lovely melted Emmental cheese. The plate comes with thick seasoned potato wedges and a generous helping of mixed greens, mushroom, and tomato tossed in a divine house mustard dressing.

The Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict, one of 30 North’s signature dishes, arrived next. A thick slice of whole wheat toast topped with mashed avocado, lettuce, smoked salmon, two poached eggs drenched in hollandaise sauce. The bread was sensational, perfectly toasted and crispy on the outside. It’s worth mentioning that all bakery and desserts are made on the premises, so freshness is guaranteed.

We washed down brunch with a thick avocado and Rocca juice, smooth and subtly sweet, blended with milk. Finally, we had to cap off the meal with one more cup of amazing coffee, and that was the right decision to make. Another Clever brew of Kenyan AA bean came next, hitting the right spot with a full bodied, high acidity drink with delightful fruity notes. We highly recommend you forgo milk and sugar with your coffee so you can truly taste the authenticity of the coffee.

Other Menu Options that Appealed

Many more coffees are a must, and the menu is certainly worth exploring – the selection of avocados on toast is appealing, and the entire breakfast and salads menu.

Beverages Available

Coffee, coffee, coffee! Plus, a large selection of juices and iced beverages.

Décor & Ambience

30 North Zamalek offered ample courtyard seating and a small selection of indoor tables. The space dominates the main courtyard of the ICONIA building, and the coffee bar boasts every bean you dream of, with the brewing techniques on display for customers who wish to learn more about how they can enjoy their coffee.

Clientele Mix

Groups of friends mingling and socializing on the weekend, families who caffeinate together, and business professionals gabbing over brew.

Price range: Average to high depending on what you order, but it’s worth it.

The Terrace at CJC 610 in Guezira Plaza

We have always loved this venue for its buzzing atmosphere and good sounds, and now we can add exciting cuisine to the attractions. A fresh concept and well-curated menu have transformed The Terrace 610 into a foodie haven that is worth checking out.

Signature Dishes

Chicken Bites, Herb Crusted Coconut Shrimp, Vodka Chili Prawn Noodles, Buffalo Chicken and Blue Cheese Pizza, Smoked Salmon and Crab Cream Flatbread, Rosemary Shrimp Pasta, Lobster Lasagna, and Ginger Sesame Glazed Ribs.

Dishes Sampled

First things first, we kicked off with one of the many intriguing cocktails to whet our appetites. The Cosmopolitan was pleasingly fresh with citrus and berry undertones, not too sweet and did the job superbly. Going classic to start, we opted for Lobster Bisque and Chicken Liver Parfait. Both rated top marks; the bisque had amazing depth of flavor and we loved the chunks of lobster, mussels and huge prawns. The Chicken Liver Parfait was as authentic as it comes, with just the right amount of toast for smearing with the rich, creamy mousse. Both were quite filling, but we opted to try the Smoked Salmon and Crab Cream Flatbread nonetheless. A great decision, as it was addictively more-ish. The piquant capers gave just the right balance against the creaminess of the crab and the exquisitely fresh smoked salmon.

Venturing further, we decided on the Truffle Tenderloin Steak and Salmon and Curry Coconut Cream. The generous cut of tenderloin was cooked exactly as requested, wonderfully tender, and came with a sizable portion of truffle-infused gnocchi. The salmon was pink, moist and flaky, and came bathed in a creamy coconut sauce with just a waft of curry to enhance it. With white basmati rice to mop up the sauce, it was surprisingly filling. Not really planning for dessert, as we had dined a little too well, we were still persuaded to share a portion of Tahini Chocolate and Pistachio Cheesecake. Rich and decadent, immaculately presented, it was everything promised and more. The meal throughout had met the most exacting standards, and left us in awe. Chapeau to Chef Marwa and her skillful team!

Other Menu Options that Appealed and Beverages Available

With plans already in place for a return visit we have shortlisted some menu items that caught our eye: Roasted Tomato Soup, Roasted Halloumi Salad, Slow-Cooked Lamb Shoulder and Leg, Artichoke Carpaccio, Cauliflower Popcorn and Wasabi Steak Tartare.

There is a full bar, along with a good range of soft options. We highly recommend the cocktails, with soft versions available for those who prefer.

Décor and Ambience

Subtle lighting, copious greenery, industrial chic touches and well-spaced tables with comfortable seating. The table settings blew us away with their creativity, and the service was top-notch. Add on the great music selection and it makes for a sophisticated but relaxing setting.

Clientele Mix: This has to be an unbeatable date night spot for the 25+ crowd. A good time is virtually guaranteed. It also works perfectly well for groups of friends, and for us, it was a nice way to finish off a work week with early dinner. We recommend booking ahead.

Price Range: Moderate upwards.

Melt Bistro & Café at Mall of Egypt

By: Mariam Elhamy

Cheese-y goodness is the status quo at Melt. All kinds of rich, ooey, gooey melted cheese in every bite! Located inside Mall of Egypt and overlooking Ski Egypt, Melt Bistro & Café takes cheeses to new levels, just when you thought you couldn’t reinvent the wheel (of cheese)!

Signatures Dishes

Any of Melt’s takes on the classic grilled cheese, and there are plenty! Avocado Mexican Shrimp Salad, Arancini appetizer (fried mushrooms and spinach risotto) and Philly Steak Sandwich.

Dishes Sampled

We started out with the Avocado Mexican Shrimp Salad, a fresh twist on a traditional Mexican salad; red kidney beans, sweet corn, diced tomatoes, and cilantro leaves, grilled avocado, topped with grilled shrimp. We then sampled one of Melt’s signature appetizer dishes, the Smoked Mozzarella. If you’re into smoked food this discovery will really blow you away! The thinly sliced smoked mozzarella topped with Rocca leaves, diced cherry tomatoes, a special tomato sauce and balsamic vinegar was a very pleasant new taste surprise for us!

The Cheese Fondue is one item you should not pass up at Melt! A mix of melted cheeses arrived in a huge pot with a candle underneath to keep it warm. We dipped crunchy green apple cubes into the cheese, savoring every bite of the sweet and creamy combination! The fondue platter also comes with seasoned grilled chicken slices, roasted potato wedges and toasted bread croutons.

The cheesy goodness just kept flowing when we received our Buffalo Chicken Mac & Cheese. This came in a pot with a good ratio of pasta versus cheese and marinated buffalo chicken. But Melt wouldn’t leave a dish this basic without adding its’ own touch; we were wowed by the jaw-dropping cheese-melting show performed on our dish! The server melted the top of half a cheese wheel onto our dish and we dove in like there was no tomorrow.

Just when we started thinking about all the extra weight we had probably put on, the dessert menu came. We were recommended the Homemade Cheesecake and the Lotus Cookie Madness, but Melt was generous enough to also serve us the Chocolate Fondant and the Boston Fudge Cake. Winner of this round was by far the Lotus Cookie Madness. For anyone who likes Lotus biscuits this is a dream come true. The chewy chocolate chip cookie was already great on its own but to our delight it was coated with Lotus spread, vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel sauce. The Chocolate Fondant was a great pick too, and the vanilla ice cream is spectacular.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

On another visit we would love to try the Chicken Cordon Bleu Quesadillas and the Brioche Burger. The beverage menu includes hot and iced tea and soft drinks.

Décor & Ambience

Very modern with marble and granite tables, colorful walls, dark wood and very comfy chairs. There’s a nice seating area that overlooks Ski Egypt, which could be super fun to watch

Clientele Mix: Families and people working with their laptops.

Price range: Moderate

In the Stars: Your December Horoscopes

By Maeri Frances

It’s time to close the book on 2019. Will December be a fitting finale to the year for you? It’s party season, so let’s see what is in store.

P.S. Don’t forget to read your rising sign as well if you know it.

Happy birthday, Sagittarius!

December in a Nutshell: The money comes rolling in

Jupiter, the expansive luck-bearer is moving on from your sign into Capricorn. Sounds bad? Not at all. It will be easier to shed any kilos you piled on over the last year, and finally your finances should start to improve. Look for good news on this front around the 15th of the month.

Aries:

December in a Nutshell: Aim for new career heights.

As the year winds up, or down as the case may be, it’s time to put plans into gear for improving career prospects for 2020. There will be good opportunities, along with some lucky breaks, but at the end of the day, there will still be some hard work required. No pain, no gain, as they say. Ask for a raise around the 15th!

Taurus:

December in a Nutshell: Distant shores are calling you…

With Jupiter in fellow Earth sign Capricorn, things will be much more to your liking. The travel bug may hit you hard over the coming year, not simply as a way of changing the scenery, but to allow you to explore new cultures and ideas. December looks lined up to offer you a lot of memorable days, with relationships seeming to play an important role.

Gemini:

December in a Nutshell: Somebody has your back.

If you have been putting effort into building stronger relationships, it may bear fruit with a deeper level of confidence and trust. Help and support should be more forthcoming when you need it. From this month on, your credit standing should be improved for quite a while, so don’t be shy about having a cozy chat with your bank manager. Try mixing business with pleasure on New Year’s Eve.

Cancer:

December in a Nutshell: Things are looking up for singles!

Sensitive Cancer may often find trouble finding a partner who can show the empathy and affection that strikes the right note with them. The good news is, this could be the year you find Mr. or Ms. Right. Invest in some party gear; you shouldn’t waste an invitation this festive season. It is time to mix and mingle!

Leo:

December in a Nutshell: Feelin’ good.

After a period of not feeling your healthy best, the tide seems to be turning. It could be a healthier lifestyle; something is boosting your energy and enthusiasm. Love matters go onto the back burner for a while, as you become more focused on your own needs. Cruise through December and conserve energy for 2020.

Virgo:

December in a Nutshell: Get in touch with nature.

With such positive energy in Earth signs, and temperatures chilling, the time is right to throw on a sweater and get outdoors. Even if you are not the sporty type, the fresh air will invigorate you and give you an energy boost you didn’t expect. Singles may find romance popping up in unexpected places in the coming period.

Libra:

December in a Nutshell: Your home is your haven.

As winter sets in you should do what you can to create a cozy nest for yourself. This is the time to add some touches to your décor, setting a new mood that makes you feel more upbeat. This season could be perfect for doing a spot of home entertaining as well, so brush up on your culinary skills.

Scorpio:

December in a Nutshell: Busy, busy, busy.

Expect to have a month packed with visits, and visitors, short trips, phone calls, emails and all of that stuff. Same old, same old, you say? But this month, and looking forward into 2020 you may get good news, and enjoy interacting more than usual. Short trips can be mood-boosters as well, so start planning.

Capricorn:

December in a Nutshell: Good things come to those who wait.

You are super patient at the best and worst of times, and now you can reap the rewards. With Jupiter entering your birth sign all that hard work will finally pay dividends. New faces, new opportunities, and quite possibly a few more kilos. But that is a sign that stress levels are dropping, so hey, why complain? Party a little this month, it will do you good.

Aquarius:

December in a Nutshell: Time to play it cool.

No, we are not just talking about the weather. Step off the merry-go-round and claim some time for things that you need for your inner growth and nourishment. When you find that sweet spot where your inner calm reflects in how you manage the day-to-day stuff, you will understand why. Don’t overdo things this festive season, be selective in how you spend your time.

Pisces:

December in a Nutshell:

You love the feeling of a new year ahead, full of the unknown and with the possibility of dreams becoming reality. Ok, we won’t burst your bubble, but if you look at what you have now, just count your blessings. This December is all about friendship, and shared goals and values. People who understand what makes you tick, what moves you to tears, what has you in fits of laughter. Enjoy!

Our monthly horoscopes are brought to you by Maeri Frances, a consulting astrologer with over 30 years’ experience. Exclusive to our publications, we brings tips for each Sun sign on how to avoid the pitfalls and ride the highs of each month.

Tricia Guild: In My View

By Tricia Guild

Tricia Guild has a passionate belief that every choice we make, no matter how insignificant it seems, has an impact on our well-being and happiness, and that is something she lives by. In this book she takes us on a tour through both her Italy home, which she considers seasonal and natural, and her London home which she considers experimental. Both homes show how Tricia’s choices have shaped how she now lives, and will inspire the reader to develop their individual style and thus create their own special view.

Healthiest Diet on the Planet

By Dr. John McDougall

The bestselling author and internationally celebrated physician and expert on nutrition offers an appealing, approachable health solution—eat the foods you love to lose weight and get healthy. He offers a clear, proven guide to what we should and shouldn’t eat to prevent disease, slow the aging process, improve our physical fitness, be kind to the environment, and be our most attractive selves.

Renovate and Set the Mood

Subtle, organic, mellow and slightly moody. Meet the color palettes that interior designers say will be defining our style throughout the coming year.

Beige is back!

After being sidelined by grey in all its variations, we can now embrace all shades of beige. From almost parchment or oatmeal through to warmer honey tones, then to caramel, taupe, ochre and even mustard yellow. The shades all team beautifully with the new matte, more subdued metal accents on accessories and lighting. Look for texture to add a touch of individuality.

Fresh as a forest

Nature turns out green in all its glorious shades, and what a choice there is. From icy mint to sage, and olive and moss to deep hunter green, all work beautifully to bring an organic feel to any space. Relaxing, subtle and unquestionably elegant, this color could be your top pick for 2020.

Warm up with red

Think of rich spices, the dying embers of a fire, the beauty of autumn leaves. There is nothing like a touch of red to add coziness and charm to a room. Muted shades of smudgy pink flow towards russet tones and pops of deep berry, with a spectrum of colors in between to bring excitement to your home.

Oh. how we love the blues

Talk about teal, but keep it subdued. Capture the tone of the ocean on a winter’s day, or the pale blue of a spring sky. Or go confident with cobalt. There is no end to how blue can be used to bring visual impact into your home this coming year.
