L’aroma in Zamalek

By: Mariam Elhamy

Walking down a narrow path on one of Zamalek’s older streets, you’ll find L’aroma nestled inside a classic building. L’aroma is your typical neighborhood café with friendly staff who know their regular customers. The cozy setting is perfect for coffee on a chilly winter morning, much like when we visited to try out some of their sandwiches, desserts … and obviously, the coffee!

Signature Dishes and Dishes Sampled

Their signature items include the coffee; certainly, but also the Twix tart and strawberry cheesecake.

The menu is comprised of freshly baked good, made from scratch on the premises, and soups, salads, pasta, sandwiches and desserts. Luckily, we sampled a bit of everything. First came the classic Grilled Chicken Caesar salad and the Tuna Pasta salad. The penne pasta came with sundried tomato pieces and dried oregano topped with shredded tuna and sweet corn.

We also tried their scrumptious club sandwich, comprising of thin slices of white toast filled with turkey, roast beef, eggs, cheese, tomato slices and lettuce. Then we bit into the Asian chicken wrap, surprisingly sweet due to the honey-soy dressing with a crunch from sesame seeds and sharp-tasting green onion slices. The oriental beef wrap was a bit chewy for our taste; the thin slices of meat were cooked with onion and bell pepper and served with tahini sauce. Both sandwiches were served with French fries. We thought we’d give their ciabatta bread a try, so we tried the roast beef sandwich and tuna sandwich – freshly prepared and perfect for a bite with coffee in the morning or a quick lunch in between work.

Finally, we got to the coffee stage! L’aroma’s coffee comes straight from Italy roasted, imported and served directly to your cup. Their menu offers a variety of hot and cold coffee drinks and flavors that you could choose from. Their cappuccino and macchiato were a hit with us, very creamy and rich in flavor. Perfect with the slice of strawberry cheesecake and Twix tart, which capped the meal nicely with a smooth ending.

Other Menu Options that Appealed and Beverages Available

The menu also had a burger section, which could be nice for lunch or dinner, and they serve waffles, pancakes and crepes. Beverages include coffee, frappe, fresh juice, ice tea, milkshakes, fizzy drinks and smoothies.

Décor and Ambience

The décor is very simple and basic with a few high tables and comfy couches making the place very cozy and laid back. There’s a display fridge with desserts and bakery items to choose from.

Clientele Mix: Friends, people having a quick coffee on the go

Price Range: Reasonable

12 Tea Cups from Around the World

By: Mariam Elhamy

Most people drink tea on a daily basis, whether with breakfast after meals or even in between meals, tea is very popular across all social classes. But, have you ever wondered about the origins of tea? Come with us on a journey through history, and discover the health benefits of this comfort beverage and how people worldwide enjoy it.

Did you know that …

  • Two separate wars were fought between Britain and China in the 19th century over trade disputes pertaining to tea, aside from the American revolution named The Boston Tea Party which occurred in 1773.
  • It takes around 2,000 tiny leaves to make just one pound of tea.
  • Turks consume an average of almost seven pounds of tea per person annually. The Irish are the world’s second-biggest tea drinkers, they consume less than five pounds per person a year.
  • People were using ceramic teapots 11,000 years ago in Asia and the Middle East. Tea didn’t reach most Europeans until the late 16th century.
  • Technically, herbal tea isn’t actually tea. Herbal tea blends don’t contain any actual tea leaves, which is why they’re usually caffeine-free.
  • Most Americans prefer their tea cold. About 85% of tea sales in the U.S. are iced tea.
  • In the Himalayas, it’s traditional to add butter (usually from a yak) to milky black tea.

Health benefits of drinking tea:

  • In addition to external healing properties, green tea is known as a super food when it’s consumed.
  • You are less likely to get a “caffeine crash” when you drink tea (as opposed to soda or coffee). The high levels of antioxidants in tea slow the absorption of caffeine, which results in a gentler increase caffeine in your system and a longer period of alertness with no crash at the end.
  • Drinking several cups of tea per day has been associated with lower risks of liver disease, depression, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes.

However, high concentrations of oxalate, found in black tea, can lead to renal failure … so don’t go overboard with your tea habit.

Ever wondered how people enjoy tea around the world?

Japan

Matcha is an iconic tea made by grinding Japanese green tea leaves into a fine powder, which is then mixed directly with hot water to make tea, this makes matcha one of the most nutritionally rich types of tea available.

britain

A typical British teacup is made with black tea with sugar and sometimes milk, it’s usually served with butter biscuits or scones. Did you know that the Brits refer to lunch as “tea”? Yea, it confuses every much any non-Brit.

Morocco

Moroccan mint tea is a green tea prepared with spearmint leaves and sugar.

India

Indian tea is black tea brewed with cinnamon, ginger, cloves, cardamom, star anise, fennel and milk.

Turkey

A typical Turkish tea set includes Turkish tea glasses, tiny teaspoons, small plates and a tray to serve all the glasses together which creates a unique tea drinking experience.

Russia

Russian tea is often made with sugar and a base of Tang or orange juice concentrate along with black or instant tea resulting in a tangy-sweet taste.

Tibet

This tea is made with butter! Tibetan Butter Tea, known as Po cha, is made from churning tea, salt and yak butter. The tea used is a particularly potent, smoky type of brick tea from Pemagul, Tibet. A portion of this brick tea is crumbled into water and boiled for hours to produce a smoky, bitter brew called chaku.

Thailand

Thai tea is a mixture of black tea, condensed milk, and ice. The drink is made by placing the tea in a pot lined with a pantyhose filter, brewing the leaves for a long time, then adding condensed milk and crushed (never cubed) ice. Food coloring is sometimes added for the strong orange color.

Taiwan

Bubble tea, also called pearl tea or Boba, is a drink which comes from Taichung, Taiwan. It is made by mixing black tea with non-dairy creamer or milk and adding round “pearl” tapioca.

ARGENTINA

Mate tea is the most well known tea in Argentina and is prepared by steeping dried leaves of yerba mate in hot water. It is served with a straw that is traditionally made of silver.

USA

Americans are used to having their tea sweet and iced. Iced tea is made by adding sugar or syrup to black tea either while the tea is brewing or still hot then adding ice cubes. It’s sometimes flavored, most commonly with lemon, peach, raspberry or mint.

EGYPT

Egyptian tea comes in two varieties: koshary and saiidi. Koshary tea, popular in the North, involves steeping black tea in boiled water and letting it sit for a few minutes. It is sweetened with sugar and often flavored with fresh mint leaves. Adding milk is also common. Koshary tea is usually light.

Saiidi tea is common in Upper Egypt (the South). It is prepared by boiling black tea with water for as long as 5 minutes over a strong flame. Saiidi tea is extremely heavy, with 2 teaspoonfuls per cup being the norm. It is sweetened with large amounts of sugar.

How do you like your tea? Hot or iced, black or green, flavored or plain, milk or lemon, with honey or sugar?

Nairu on First Nile Boat

Mention Asian food and a stunning Nile view and you have our immediate attention. And when it has been rolled together into one stunning package by Four Seasons, you know you are in for a treat.

Signature Dishes

Chicken Sambal, Malay Chicken Curry, Beef Rendang, Green Curry Shrimp, impressively created by Chef de Cuisine Mohamed Nazlan.

Dishes Sampled

It is a rare occasion when we take our time to settle down to the serious business of food. But, Nairu is such a feast for the senses on every level, we were a tad distracted. The colors, the lighting, the wall-length mural, the décor, and ah… the Nile. We leisurely sipped our refreshing welcome drink of pineapple and Blue Curacao, then quickly snapped to attention when a platter of amuse-bouche miraculously landed in front of us. Spoons with Japanese bread, yoghurt, coriander and peanuts, accompanied by a spicy pickled cucumber. That kicked the taste buds into action!

Feeling adventurous, we shared a bamboo steamer of the lightest, fluffiest Beef Bao Buns imaginable. The pulled-beef filling was tender to a ‘t’ and packed with flavor. Indonesia was next, with succulent and crunchy Spicy Peanut Balinese Chicken, served on skewers. Our table quickly filled up with more dishes, along with trays of ponzu and goma sauces and sambal dips; a mélange of flavors in eye-popping bright tableware. Hits of unbelievable heat, salty, tangy, sweet and mysterious, all worthy of exploring.

We loved the Jumbo Prawn Miso Butter, who wouldn’t? And the sticky, soy sweetness of the wok-fried Mongolian Style Beef was addictive with its side of fluffy, steamed jasmine rice. Needing something to counterbalance the rich spices, we decided to share a crisp, fresh Spicy Asian Slaw, composed of finely sliced pears and cabbage in a sriracha dressing. Divine!

And could we miss out on trying the sushi? We opted for California Maki with crab, avocado, caviar, cream cheese and cucumber, and Volcano Maki, with salmon and avocado topped with crab, salmon roe and sesame seeds and a spicy sauce. The condiments of soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger came in generous quantities as well, something we appreciated.

With barely space to explore further, we still couldn’t resist sharing a Shrimp Biriyani. It proved to be pleasantly mild, with aromatic flavors delicately balanced and its large juicy shrimp buried under a blanket of rice. Presentation of every dish we tried was flawless, and our biriyani even had two dainty poppadum to add an element of crunch.

Dessert was really far from our mind as we sat back to enjoy the mesmerizing view of boats of all shapes and sizes making their way up and down the Nile. It didn’t take much persuasion though, and we ended up sharing a delightfully gooey, chocolatey Red Berry Lava Cake with Green Tea Ice Cream. Oozing all sorts of yumminess, it was a great sign-off for a meal to remember.

Other Menu Options that Appealed

Nairu’s menu has so much to offer it would take numerous visits to do justice to its many tempting items. But Peking Duck and whole wok-fried Tamarind Sea Bass would be on our list, for sure. And more Bao Buns please!

Beverages Available

At the time of our visit there were only soft options, but the full bar was due to be available within days.

Décor and Ambience

With professional, seamless service that flows unobtrusively, you feel relaxed and pampered from start to end. Seating is well laid out, with just the right level of privacy that still allows diners to enjoy the vibrant décor and well curated background music. Being right on the Nile is a bonus, of course.

Clientele Mix: Sophisticated, savvy 25+. This is sure to become a favorite spot for those in the know.

Price Range: Moderate to rather high end, but totally worth it.

Watch this Space: Nairu Lounge, on a lower level, which can be accessed via the restaurant, is due to open shortly. We can’t wait.

Mezzeh at Le Meridien Cairo Airport

It may look like your average pricey hotel restaurant, but Mezzeh is anything but! We walked in to be greeted by the friendly staff, hospitality at its prime. As the Chef was expecting our visit he kindly came and introduced every single dish we were having, from the conceptualization to the special ingredients.

Dishes Sampled

Soon after we were seated we were offered a basket of warm pita bread (a staple of every Lebanese meal) accompanied by a trio of aromatic oils and sauces to dip our bread into. A favorite pastime while waiting for our drinks and skimming through the menu.

Our starters consisted of the typical cold dips, however with a twist. Chef Hendawy created a contrast of cold and warmth in these dips, like the Mutabel – mashed smoked eggplant, tahini and lime juice, presented topped with beef strips, slices of roasted bell peppers and sprinkled with crushed pistachio. The Fattoush salad was served with long finger cuts of grilled, slightly golden halloumi cheese, drizzled with molasses dressing and the Muhammara dip was served with three generous grilled shrimp. Our appetizers were followed by an assortment of three mini doughnut shaped falafel, three Kibbeh over a thick coat of garlic paste; and small bites of Musakhan rolls – wrapped filo pastry, filled with shredded roast chicken, garnished with thinly sliced grilled red onions; and a portion of Makanek – mini lamb sausages braised with lemon and pomegranate sauce, topped with crushed pistachios.

No less impressive and appetizing were our main dishes. We shared two mains: Lamb Kofta and Dawood Basha. The succulent lamb dish was given a twist by being served with cranberry sauce – giving it a pleasantly sweet dimension. The classic meatballs braised in tomato sauce are a certain crowd pleaser. Needless to say, our Dawood Basha dish was served in a clay pot covered with oven baked dough. Once the dough is cut through a piping aroma of the tomato sauce and meat fills the air. We skipped the rice and savored this classic by dipping in the bread to soak in the sauce. We ended our lunch in blissful sweetness, namely a fresh gooey Kunafa, straight from the oven. The crispy browned filo pastry filled with cheesy cake, drizzled with sugar syrup and crushed pistachio is a match made in heaven.

Beverages Available

Cold and hot drinks with a full-fledged bar.

Décor and Ambience

The restaurant is sleek and modern just like the hotel. Dark wood and leather seats give the interior a sober atmosphere, with columns, open niches and partitions separating the long hall into smaller, intimate dining areas. A large window guarantees a good view of the open kitchen.

Clientele Mix: Business lunch-dinner goers, hotel guests.

Price Range: High end.

Worth Noting: The terrace has a nice overview of the pool.
