Khaled El Sawy in The Money

We took a bit of time from Khaled El Sawy’s busy schedule to talk about his latest movie The Money, written by Tamer Hosny, and asked him a few questions about his new year’s resolutions for 2020. Here’s everything he shared with us on this exclusive interview.

CWM: Tell us about your character in this new movie? 

I play an old-school and very experienced con-man named Selim and he takes Tamer Hosny’s character under his wing and serves as a mentor in The Money. He teaches him every he knows, but both our characters answer to an older Godfather named Christo and we run operations for him. Selim isn’t trustworthy at all, even if he makes agreements with friends, he can easily stab them in the back, unlike Tamer’s character.

What about this film made you excited to do it?

What really excited me about The money was Tamer! He’s a superstar, and I loved the story – it’s fun, and has action, travel, so many different elements. The cast and crew selected were also a wonderful bunch – Said El Marouk, the director, Zein Kurdi, the producer, Zeina, Mohamed Sallam, Aicha Ben Ahmed. But mainly, Tamer’s presence sealed the deal because he chooses his projects very carefully and he has an ability to predict the success of a film pretty accurately.

The trailer looks absolutely action-packed, what about this movie is going to blow audiences away?

Besides the action, I think the performances of this brilliant cast will blow audiences away! However, the action and romance scenes will complement the acting very well. I think for sure, action films don’t have to be foreign to be mind-blowing. I believe we had an amazing team for stunt choreography and we achieved a very realistic standard of action sequences and scenes.

Which scene was the most challenging to shoot?

The climatic action scene between Tamer and myself was the hardest to pull off and required a lot of work to pull off! The scene takes place in our house and we basically break everything in the house and face off against each other in a very intense fight scene. We trained really hard beforehand, and the process needs you to plan every move – I’ll hit you here, then you’ll move here, and so forth. It’s very much like learning how to dance. I mean, we were exhausted and in pain by the end of it! And there is always a chance that a move will slip and you’ll end up injured.

Besides The Money, what’s is the most fun you’ve had playing a part?

Cabaret. Because, well, it was a movie about a cabaret (laughs) It was a set full of laughter and lightness, and the director would always start the day by saying “I want everyone to get to work! I want hysterics!” which was a great summary of The money itself. We worked really hard and made a great comedy movie about the seedy and greedy world of Egyptian cabarets.

What can your fans expect from you in the upcoming period?

I have quite a few projects coming out this year, for which I’m very grateful! I’m finally going to take part in a Ramadan series after being out of the game for three years. It’s a great series produced by Synergy and the writer is a legend, Ibrahim Kamal. Hossam Ali will direct, and it will be an ensemble cast including myself, Fathy Abdel Wahab, and Tarek Lotfy. I’ll also film a project with Ramez Galal this year called Haykal Nazbi which should be a laugh! I love Ramez and his work, and I think this idea is super unique – it’s a comedy/horror film and should be something special.

I have Sandoo’ el Donya and Shereet 6 coming out this year, hopefully, two movies that I’m sure audiences will enjoy. Fun fact: I’m the oldest cast member in Shereet 6!

Our January issue is all about our dreams and goals for the year, do you have any personal goals or dreams you want to achieve in 2020?

Of course, I have a lot of goals – career-wise and health-wise, in order to be the best version of myself I can be. I ultimately wish to avoid any missteps and mistakes I’ve gone before.

Godfather 3 for the 9th time, and Irishman.

I like both – specifically dawn and dusk.

The arts.

If you had to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Molokheya.

In one word, what is happiness for you?

Fighting to better yourself. This is what leads to happiness, unfortunately.

Tucked discreetly behind Cairo Marriott Hotel,Miette; this bijou spot offers delightful bites and beverages for any time of day. The French bistro and bakery offers breakfast, sandwiches, and salads.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

The menu features several Miette signature items, such as Chocolate Millfeuille, Miette Omelette and Grilled Cheese Sandwich. And friends have raved about the cheesecake. It is worth noting that all bakery items, including bread, are flown in as frozen dough from France before being baked here.

Our perennial favorite, Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon featured in the menu, so it was a no-brainer. Always a test of any chef’s skill, the eggs came out creamy and just right, garnished with curls of smoked salmon and fresh fronds of dill. The addition of nicely seasoned potato wedges and a large baby leaf green salad with a liberal drizzle of tangy vinaigrette made for a substantial meal.

Our latte coffee came with a cheeky little biscuit on the side, but our eyes were still drawn to the Almond Croissant in the pastry display a few feet away. We couldn’t resist, after all, it had been flown all the way from France just for us. It would have been impolite to ignore it. And yes, it was everything we hoped for.

Other Menu Options that Appealed

Miette has a great range of sandwiches and salads, so we would love to try a few. We would find it hard to say no to the Grilled Cheese Sandwich of course, that is a classic that will never go out of fashion. And, no doubt, we would end up munching our way through the dessert menu. Lemon Tart, anyone?

Beverages Available

If coffee’s your thing you will be spoiled for choice. We would challenge any café in Europe to match this selection. Fresh juices, smoothies, shakes and a tea section round out the options.

Décor and Ambience

Corner bistros and cafés abound in every French neighborhood, and Miette could easily be mistaken for one. Retro wooden chairs and a simple décor are accented with little green plants in pots lining the walls. The space barely accommodates the five tables and display case, but the coziness was not uncomfortable. Everything was spotlessly clean, and the music was distinctly French. We noted that there was a lot of takeaway trade, with people popping in to grab a sandwich or a few coffees to go. It seems that word has spread quickly.

What We Loved 

The attention to detail! The service was professional, warm and attentive, and we found phone charging plugs neatly slotted into the base of the banquette beside each table. Everything seemed geared to making customers feel totally at home, in the nicest possible way.

Clientele Mix: Your typical Zamalek crowd, plus tourists from neighboring hotels. This is a super spot to escape to when you need a break on a shopping excursion.

Price Range: Moderate, especially considering that any items are imported to ensure a consistent quality.

Worth Noting: Miette delivers to Zamalek, Garden City and Mohandesin.

Ingredients:

  • 300 g parsley, finely chopped
  • 200 g tomatoes, finely diced
  • 50 g onions, finely chopped
  • 5 gm diced mint
  • 10 gm bulgur wheat
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation:

Place the finely chopped vegetables in a bowl. Create a mixture of the salt, pepper, lemon, olive oil and bulgur, then mix gently with the vegetables.

Serve Tabbouleh immediately.

Along the way, I play the role motivator or “cheerleader,” as well as, the roles of strategist and accountability partner.

As a life coach, I don’t give advice. But as a business coach, I offer my business expertise to the client and also work with others in the organization.

How does that tie into your work as an advisor?

I don’t join an organization as an expert with a preset toolbox. I join with an exploratory mindset, with curiosity. I explore and observe from an external, holistic viewpoint. My professional experiences, of course, gives me the structured approach and intuition to identify problem areas and what may be needed to address them. But I found combining the competencies of an advisor with a coach, and approaching challenges as a coach has proven to obtain more positive, long-lasting changes.

Why are the results more positive?

Whether I am coaching clients on a challenge related to their personal or professional lives or related to their business, I position myself as a partner whose only goal is to maximize their potential to achieve what they want. I pay attention to the “human element” – the client himself/herself – their perceptions and attitudes that are very much in the core of their challenges. I believe if we don’t create awareness to shift the mindset of our clients and instead, focus on solving the problem, this is not a true remedy. It’s an aspirin or temporary relief. That’s why successful change management efforts focus on the people themselves.

Lastly, the commitment of the client is a prerequisite for change and in this partnership, the client has responsibilities for creating results. They are partners throughout the process, together exploring possible paths, designing objectives and strategies, followed by committing to actions. As a facilitator, my role includes challenging them with accountability while extending my resources. But the true expert on my client’s life, career, or business is the client himself/ herself. What is suitable, realistic, feasible, and truly sustainable has to be co-created with the client. And that is the secret ingredient to achieving positive results with longer-term impact.

Do you tailor your service to meet each client’s requirements?

Yes, very much. I evaluate their needs and advise them exactly how I can support them. If they need technical expertise beyond my scope, I try to refer them to experts.

As a life coach, my clients request sessions as often as they want. I don’t follow up. As a business coach, a time frame is agreed upon and expectations are detailed.

How would you categorize your clients?

Anyone who feels a gap between where they are and where they want to be, professionally, personally, or in their business. I serve companies, women and men, as well as youth. When it comes to youth, I can take a mentor role and feel it’s my community payback.

Personally, I only categorize clients as either committed to empowering themselves to create desired change, or looking for quick fixes or others to plug-in solutions.

What do you consider are the most important factors in creating a successful business or project?

Leaders have a vision of the bigger picture, and are able to keep their strategic focus while guiding the smaller picture. This is the cornerstone of better decision-making.

Not enough businesses take the time to challenge their perspectives and brainstorm to get this clarity, then write down strategic plans to make sure what they want, where they want to go, how they will get there is clear to everyone. There is a saying “An idiot with a plan can beat a genius without a plan.” I consider good planning like turning on the highway lights to drive easier and safer at night.

The importance of transparency and accountability in creating a healthy working environment that retains good employees and improves business is often overlooked.

Lastly, studies show the benefits good mentors can have on entrepreneurs, and coaches can offer to even CEOs of multinationals. That’s why coaching is a fast growing service globally. The process of finding the right match, or chemistry, between you and a coach/mentor is often what takes some time in trials.

What are the common mistakes that people make?

Believing their perceptions of reality or situation are facts carved in stone. Not realizing their mindsets play critical roles in their success and can be shifted. These individuals don’t realize the potential that can be unleashed when exercising their willpower for change.

Perfect for chilly days, soup is considered one of the warmest, easiest and most nutritious items you can pick from a menu or make yourself, at home.

Whether you love the creamy richness of Mushroom Soup, or prefer the clear vegetable-laden broth of Minestrone, there is soup for all moods, and occasions. Seafood lovers can plunge into hearty bisques and chowders, and legume fans find it hard to resist a good lentil soup.

There are basic rules to making a good soup, so keep these in mind:

  • Start with well-prepared stock or bouillon. This varies according to the type of soup, and can be based on fish, meat, poultry or vegetables.
  • Place the ingredients in cold water and let them heat up to release the full flavors, rather than dropping them into boiling water.
  • Don’t take shortcuts when chopping the vegetables. Keep them as fine as possible to boost the flavor.
  • Lightly sauté the onion, carrot and celery before adding other ingredients.
  • Don’t boil your soup on a high heat. A gentle, steady simmer is the best way to allow the flavors to come through.

Creamy Tomato Soup

Ingredients:

  • 1  tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 large white onion, finely chopped
  • 1 large clove garlic, smashed and peeled
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups lower-salt chicken broth
  • A 28-oz can of whole peeled plum tomatoes, puréed (include the juice)
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 sprig fresh thyme
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh basil, chives, or dill, or a mixture of all three
  • Croutons for garnish

Preparation:

  1. Heat the oil and butter over medium-low heat until the butter melts.
  2. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft but not browned, about 8 minutes. Add the flour and stir to coat the onion and garlic. Add the broth, tomatoes, sugar, thyme, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper.
  3. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat while stirring the mixture to make sure that the flour is not sticking to the bottom of the pan. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 40 minutes.
  4. Discard the thyme sprig. Let cool briefly and then purée in two or three batches in a blender or food processor. Rinse the pot and return the soup to the pot. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  5. Serve warm but not hot, garnished with the herbs and croutons on the side.
