Sizzler in Cairo Festival City, CityStars & Mall of Egypt

After 6 years of serving exceptional steaks in Maadi, one of Cairo’s leading steakhouses is finally branching out! With newly opened restaurants in Mall of Egypt, Cairo Festival City and CityStars, Sizzler is taking west and east Cairo by storm. Learning that a new Sizzler was open in our neighborhood, we eagerly head over to enjoy a delicious meal.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Their signatures are the Sizzler Fillet, Fillet Mignon, Sizzler Grilled Fillet & Shrimp, Grilled Salmon & Shrimp, and Chocolate Fondant. We selected the Mini Sizzler Combo comprising of chicken strips, fried mozzarella sticks, spring rolls and cordon bleu chicken bites. This is a fried food lover’s delight! We enjoyed tucking into this sinfully delicious platter, and it wasn’t at all greasy. The BBQ and Ranch dipping sauces were perfect for dunking.

Next came the Sizzler Fillet Lover, a special meal designed for two persons. The platter includes six tender marinated mini cuts of beef fillet, cooked perfectly to order and garnished with greens, served on slices of toasted bread. Each platter came with four side dishes and Sizzler’s special Rocca salad.

The side dishes range from mashed potato, French fries, rice, sweet corn, and sautéed vegetables. Pasta lovers can also substitute for a pasta side and forgo two side dishes. The Rocca salad satisfies those with a healthy conscience, a mix of Rocca, sundried tomato, cherry tomato, strawberries, walnuts, oregano, sesame seeds, mozzarella cheese and a balsamic dressing.

We chose crisp French fries, al dente sautéed veggies, and a bowl of sweet corn to accompany our steak. The meat at Sizzler is to die for, and as steak fanatics, we don’t say this lightly. Perfectly cooked to order and tender, we could easily eat this steak every day of the week if we didn’t mind our red meat consumption! We highly recommend this place to any steak lover, you won’t be disappointed. This is a high-quality meal at an affordable price.

We didn’t have any room for dessert, but the options ranged from cheesecake to chocolate-y goodness.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

Everything looks appealing! Sizzler is a grill house, so there is something for everyone. Chicken, seafood, burgers, pasta, and of course, the king of the menu – dozens of options for steak! The beverage menu includes soft drinks, fresh juices, virgin cocktails, and hot beverages.

Décor and Ambience

Large, spacious and modern furnishings with a mix of booths and tables. The service is impeccable, and the staff really care about the guest experience.

Clientele Mix: Lots of families enjoying the delicious food. This is definitely a family-friendly place being located inside a mall.

Kimbo in Mall of Egypt – Closed

By: Mariam Elhamy

Strategically placed on the 2nd level at Mall of Egypt, Kimbo Restaurant and Café radiates elegance and good vibes. Kimbo’s spacious terrace is a great place to have breakfast, or dine and end your meal with the perfect cup of coffee.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Their signature dishes are the Mexican Burger with Shrimp and Seafood Bechamel Pizza. The food took a while to arrive, but we were not in a rush as we sipped on sweet peach ice tea and the healthy Avocado Rocca Milk while enjoying the lovely weather. The Seafood Couscous we ordered came as a salmon fillet and shrimp skewer grilled to perfection; the fillet arrived plain with a serving of lemon sauce and fresh coriander. A side of Moroccan-style couscous, served with fresh orange slices, bell pepper slices and fresh mint added a crisp and colorful taste to the dish.

Next up was Kimbo’s Rib-Eye, one of the juiciest pieces of steak we had ever tried. Accompanied with crisp French fries, grilled veggies, pepper sauce and topped with a knob of seasoned butter, the steak would have been even better had we been asked how we like our steak cooked. It arrived somewhere between medium and well done.

Following that came the Barbeque Chicken Risotto; two pieces of straight-off-the-grill smoked chicken breasts served with creamy buttery risotto and a side of barbeque sauce to tie it all in together. The chicken was so soft the knife cut through like it like butter! Highly recommended.

As a sweet cap, we dug into Date Pie, flaky layers of puff pastry, cream, and caramelized date slices topped with vanilla ice cream and drizzled with caramel sauce. A flawless combination of flavors. We also sampled the Turkish Treat; crunchy kunafa delightfully filled with mozzarella cheese, topped with cream, pistachio and drizzled with syrup. We couldn’t leave without giving the coffee a try and found our White Cappuccino Cinnamon creamy, rich and perfectly sweetened with smooth white chocolate.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

The pasta and starters menu showed real promise. The beverages include all kinds of coffee and a specialty coffee corner, tea, frappe, fresh juice, smoothies, milkshakes, ice tea, and soft drinks.

Kimbo’s Décor and Ambience

Elegant and classy. The seating area is airy, relaxing and quiet, overlooking Ski Egypt from one side and the plaza area with palm trees from the other.

Clientele mix: Couples and families.

Worth noting: Breakfast and kids’ menus are both available.

Kimbo’s Price range: Moderate.

Granita in Zamalek

There is no place quite like Zamalek, it has its own distinct vibe and story to tell. A visit to Granita for breakfast in the courtyard of All Saints Cathedral in Zamalek managed to sum it up succinctly. The quirkiness, the élan, the homage to the 30’s and 40’s. All the creation of siblings Selim and Nazli Shahine for the Church, and managed by Nazli’s husband Al Sharif Aly.

Type of Cuisine

Well-loved and time-honored dishes from gracious roots, with a smattering of contemporary tasty treats. Breakfast dishes, soups, sandwiches, appetizers, delectable desserts, and a selection of main dishes currently being developed by a seasoned French chef.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Signature dishes include the Greek Feta Cheese in Phyllo Pastry, Chicken Liver Mousse, Roast Beef Sandwich, Vietnamese Coffee, Affogato, Sloppy Joe’s Burger. Granita is so enchanting it takes a bit of time to absorb the ambience, so we chose to let our eyes feast a little before investigating the menu. In need of a caffeine fix, we started with a spot-on cappuccino. Just the right size, it came served in a retro cup and saucer, setting the 1940’s mood from the start.

A few minutes later our Greek Feta Cheese in Phyllo Pastry and Chicken Liver Mousse arrived, and we set to with enthusiasm. The combination of piping hot cheese encased in crisp pastry, with a slather of sweet fig jam and a sweet chili dip on the side might sound bizarre to the uninitiated, but trust us, now we know why it is one of the most popular items.  The Chicken Liver Mousse went down just as easily. Served in a small mason jar, on a wooden board, with small squares of freshly toasted bread, it was blissfully light, creamy, and sinfully rich.

We followed up with a Roast Beef Sandwich, simply presented with its own little jug of rich jus on the side. The portion was generous and easy enough to share. We lingered over our lunch, luxuriating in the atmosphere. What’s not to love about lunching with candlelight flickering from antique candelabra?

The dessert selection also harks back to yesteryear, and like the bread, is made in- house or sourced from artisan bakers.  Guided by instinct, we went for Crème Caramel, and Lemon Tart. Good choice! Both had a homemade authenticity, the Crème Caramel was rich and laden with syrup, the Lemon Tart was as fresh-as-can-be with a sharp tangy topping on a melt-in-the-mouth crumbly, buttery base. This sealed the deal for a return visit in the very near future.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

We can’t wait to pop in for brunch, complete with Foul El Amir and a selection of teas from Taylors of Harrogate, or maybe to try the Rosemary Cashew Fereek, or even the calorie-laden Coupe Liegeoise Vanille. Both hot and cold beverages are available. We loved the coffee.

Décor & Ambience

Gentrified and welcoming, the low key buzz of conversations from the lunch crowd scattered around tables and ensconced in secluded corners crammed with vintage sofas gives Granita a cozy, clubby feel. The main area also opens onto a pleasant outdoor secret garden with comfortable seating in Zamalek.

We adored the mélange of retrieved and reclaimed furniture. Baize-covered card tables alongside stainless steel topped refractory tables, a gracious wooden dining table that must have seen countless dinner parties, a distinguished desk and marble-topped tables rescued from the capacious cathedral storeroom, with lighting provided by a spectacular chandelier, candles and some industrial touches to bridge the decades. The profusion of plants supplied by the Ministry of Agriculture is available for purchase, just in case you are in the mood.

Clientele Mix: An intriguing, cosmopolitan mix. 25+, oozing old-school charm and style.

Price Range: Moderate

Worth Noting: Granita avoids the use of plastic as much as possible. Paper straws are used, along with paper wrapping for takeaways.

In the Stars: Your February Horoscopes

By Maeri Frances

In the mood for a little love? To see how February is lining up, take a peek at how the planets are opening up new opportunities, or closing doors on relationships past their expiry date.

P.S. Don’t forget to read your rising sign as well if you know it.

Happy birthday, Aquarius!

Make any money moves before mid-month.

Bookmark the 2nd of February for some quality time with your number one person, love can be quite transforming around this date. The 4th and 5th of the month give opportunities to make changes around the home, unexpected events regarding family members are also on the cards. Mercury retrograde may slow financial matters down if you have been taking too many risks, so be cautious.

Aries

Look beneath the surface, things may not be as they first appear.

It could be hard to keep track of social commitments as career pressure amps up to an even higher level. Avoid backbiting by keeping your own communication transparent and positive, if you are misunderstood things could get messy, to say the least. However, as Venus is flowing through your birth sign from the 7th, you should come out unscathed.

Taurus

Keep your bag packed…

Recent travel may have whetted your appetite for more adventures. You are feeling restless and in need of change and stimulation. Don’t count on friends too much, Mercury is turning retrograde and could see changes in plans and unforeseen circumstances. The 14th sees all the action in your opposite sign of Scorpio, indicating a steamy, passionate Valentine’s Day in general.

Gemini

A trip of the tongue could bring you undone.

Social life and group activities could burn up a lot of your energy. There is a risk of a falling out with friends, so tone down any tendency to bossiness or short temper. You will need to keep your wits sharp when Mercury goes retrograde mid-month, especially in your career milieu. Read between the lines and don’t take things for granted. The 14th could see a workmate getting cozier.

Cancer

It’s time to untangle your relationships.

Sometimes there’s just no place to hide. This is one of them. Friendships could be on and off, and closer ties may need some attention as well. If you feel that things aren’t working smoothly in your life, forget about seeking new pastures, the solution lies much closer to home. On the upside, your Valentine’s Day should rock, especially if you have a Scorpio in your life.

Leo

Conserve your resources.

A line of credit you had been depending on may dry up, so keep spending under control. You could feel in a bit of a rut, with nothing new or exciting on the horizon. It is a good time to tidy up any loose ends and make sure your house is in order, so to speak. Life will speed up again before you know it. Valentine’s Day will probably be spent close to home.

Virgo

Be self-sufficient.

Your ruling planet Mercury will turn retrograde in your relationship sector midmonth, meaning that people close to you may not follow through on promises or commitments. The best way to get through February will be to keep your head down, get the job done and rely on your own devices. The best days to relax and have fun are the 2nd, 5th, 20th and 21st of the month.

Libra

Keep your eye on the ball.

The key focus this month is on your work environment, and people you interact with. Tempers may flare for no apparent reason, and messages may be confusing at times. Grit your teeth and stay calm, if you react to everything that bugs you, the end result could take time to mend. Spend time at home rather than out on the town, it will be more productive.

Scorpio

So, what’s all the fuss about?

While other signs are having a bit of a battle, things should be humming along rather nicely for you. Relationships may a bit volatile, but there could be a new interest for the unattached. If you want to make things more official, pull out all the stops on Valentine’s Day. Like Virgo, your best days are the 2nd, 5th, 20th and 21st.

Sagittarius

Home is where the chaos is.

Let this Mercury retrograde period be a reminder to declutter and reorganize. Starting from the 17th, why not get rid of items that no longer serve a purpose for you? Donate and recycle. Venus lights up your sector of hobbies, children and romance, so make time for creative pursuits. Valentine’s Day calls for a quieter, more intimate celebration, escape the crowds.

Capricorn

Take care of the details.

It’s true, you have been through a tumultuous time with major adjustments taking place. The mental stress may be building up to the point where you just need some time out. Try to keep on top of things by tuning into your naturally organized, methodical nature. Make lists, schedule tasks and allow time to relax. Spend Valentine’s Day with a bunch of good buddies.

Pisces

Don’t lose the plot.

Yes, you guessed. Mercury is going retrograde in your birth sign. You will probably be in a daze after Valentine’s Day, is it a romantically induced one, or just too much partying? You are so lovable that no one can stay mad with you for long, so just try to stay on top of things, don’t lose the car keys or accidentally delete the entire contents of your computer and the month will pass.

Our monthly horoscopes are brought to you by Maeri Frances, a consulting astrologer with over 30 years’ experience. Exclusive to our publications, we brings tips for each Sun sign on how to avoid the pitfalls and ride the highs with each month’s horoscopes.

10 Homes We Love in Cairo, Sahel and Gouna

Contemporary or classic, simple or gloriously over-the-top, home is where the heart is. Join us in our retrospective of 10 homes we embraced over the decade in Cairo, Sahel and Gouna.

Pyramids Hills Home

May 2012

When presented with a stunning location that afforded sweeping views over the Giza Pyramids, architect Medhat Abdallah came up with a design that would meet the lifestyle requirements of his discerning clients, while housing their large collection of antique furniture and works of art. The end result was a beautifully laid out space, flowing through to pools and landscaped gardens, both tranquil and energizing.

A Breath of Summer All-Year Round

September 2016

A punch of vibrant pastels brings this seaside residence to life in an inspired way. Set in the already creative milieu of El Gouna, this space is set out to allow relaxed and harmonious living. Careful use of light neutrals by Eklego’s design team creates a flow and continuity, and the pops of color give an energizing and quirky vibrancy that stimulates the eye at just the right moment. The overall effect is that of contemporary sophistication with the right level of playfulness, all in a well thought out and extremely functional space.

Zamalek Flat

May 2014

Combining art and aesthetics, this Zamalek home may be compact, but it has its own unique charm. Stunning contemporary artwork blends with carefully collected pieces from across the globe, reflecting the owner’s North African heritage. Visually commanding, it remains, nevertheless, a welcoming livable space.

Abu Sir Villa – A Confluence of Elements

March 2013

Multi-leveled, multi-layered and modular, this home rests close to the Abu Sir Pyramids. Using eco-architectural techniques, it embraces and synergizes with the surrounding desert and rural greenery, while offering the luxury of technology where required. Materials create a contrast, from industrial epoxy resin and cement, to soft hand-hewn bricks from Siwa, but the final effect is that of calm and harmonious living.

Gouna Dreams

July 2015

When young designer Yasmina Makram founder of YM Studios set out to design a beach home in El Gouna, she used her skill-set to create an eclectic and serene respite from the city life of Cairo. By combining textures with simple yet elegant natural fabrics and materials, and applying a combination of chic simplicity with carefully sourced design features, Makram has captured the essence of the Gouna lifestyle – creative, relaxed and visually exciting.

A Moorish Study in Red

September 2015

A dream home transposed from the vast reaches of the Western Sahara in Morocco to an idyllic garden setting in Giza’s City View. The home features rich shades of red in both exterior and interior spaces to echo the russet shades of the endless deserts of the Maghreb. Traditional crafts and design elements grace the atmospheric spaces throughout. The traditional riad (courtyard) has graceful arches giving shade from the sun, immense iron lanterns sit on the flagstone terraces, all adding to the exotic charm of this stylish home.

Stunning Style in Sahel

July 2017

Located on the North Coast, MS Residence was created by Mohamed Fares of Alchemy Design Studio who re-interprets the essence of the Mediterranean beach life within a home. The uniqueness of the space emerges from the bare grey concrete ceiling carried on white walls, accentuated by the red bougainvillea, natural walnut wood, light wire mesh and an eccentric shade of yellow. The terrace, dining, bar, chaise lounge deck, and sunken seating are island spaces within a vast pool, giving birth to interesting multiple pools around each zone overlooking the beautiful Mediterranean.

Retro Meets Contemporary Chic in Sahel

July 2018

Think sun, sea and chilling out, with just enough of a party vibe to spice things up. Are we thinking of Sahel, or maybe Miami, or an inspired mix of both? As the 1950s rolled around, MiMo style was all the trend in Miami, and this airy, spacious summer home by Style Design has encapsulated the mood to perfection.

The Sakkara House: Mixing Islamic Architecture with Art Deco

April 2018

Interior architect Maha Raouf drew on her decades of experience when she began working on the design of the house, drawing up a master plan for the needs of the resident, accounting for movement and circulation all the while looking from the outside to make sure the exterior facade looked attractive. Islamic architecture principles – such as tucked away quarters for bedrooms and intimate rooms for guests, including mashrafeya windows are featured abundantly.

The Art of Summer Living

July 2019

When the owners commissioned this spacious Sa7el villa, one requirement was non-negotiable. A prodigious collection of contemporary paintings by leading Egyptian artists and an eclectic array of objets d’art would need to take pride of place. For the Principal Architect of MAp Consultants, Medhat Abdallah, this didn’t present any challenge.

Torii in Cairo Marriott Hotel

When in need of reliable and delicious Japanese food, Torii in Cairo Marriott Hotel and Omar Khayyam Casino should not be forgotten. A mainstay on the Cairo dining scene, Torii’s culinary minds are always reinventing the menu and taking the customer’s desires and satisfaction into account. We heard word that a new menu had landed, so we hurried over to taste the goods.

New on the menu: A lot! The menu has taken a pretty massive overhaul. Torii have a new take on Thai Tom Yam Soup, Ebi Furai (shrimp in spicy mayonnaise or tempura sauce), Thai Papaya Salad, Thai Beef salad, Soba and Udon Noodles with beef and veggies, and a whole host of different sushi combinations, including a special one for salmon lovers.

Dishes Sampled

We started our meal with a spicy bowl of the Thai Tom Yam Soup and a serving of Edamame beans with sea salt flakes, perfect starters to warm up on a chilly evening. Torii’s soup is magnificent, with tender and juicy large shrimp swimming in a spicy sour broth with mushroom, lemon grass, lime leaf and fresh coriander. Next came the delightful salads, Sake Salad with salmon and Maguro Salad with tuna. Layered raw salads comprising of raw fish and avocado, each salad has a special touch. The Sake Salad has a layer of tempura crisps, while the Maguro Salad offers a blend of Japanese spices and caviar.

Next, we tucked into a 24-piece order of Makisushi Specialties comprising Tempura, California, Spicy Salmon, Spicy Tuna, Dragon and Kurimi rolls. What sets Torii’s sushi apart from the dozens of sushi restaurants in Cairo is less about innovation and more about freshness. Sushi making is truly a science and a delicate process, and nothing beats an order of sushi that is prepared the correct way. We didn’t want to miss out on the Asian Specialties menu, so an order of Singaporean Prawns and Stir-fried Noodles quickly followed. Sautéed shrimp, baby corn, bell pepper, carrot and asparagus arrived tossed in a spicy Singaporean chili sauce. The shrimp is beautifully tender at Torii, and that is always a blessing, but we found the sauce too sweet for our liking and probably would have opted for something else had we known. The stir-fried noodles were perfect comfort food for a chilly night and came with a choice of beef, chicken and shrimp.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

The Teppenyaki set menu looks very enticing and offers groups of up to 8 people a live cooking experience. We’d also love to sample the Sake Tataki (salmon in sesame oil dressing), Ebi Furai (shrimp in tempura sauce) and the Thai Beef Salad.

Beverages available include beer, wine, sake, soft drinks, fresh juices, and hot tea.

Décor & Ambience

A calm and relaxing atmosphere with mood lighting and the sushi bar on display. This is the perfect spot for an intimate dinner for two, or a lively friends outing. Clientele include hotel guests, groups of friends and couples.

Price range: Moderate to high, depending on what you order.

Special offers: Mondays and Fridays host an all you can eat offer. Valentine’s Day will provide an all you and eat menu.

Tabibi: 8 Tips for Staying Heart Healthy

Tabibi

We love from the bottom of our hearts, and our hearts are the engine of our bodies. Check out Tabibi’s top tips to help keep your heart happy, healthy and full of love!

  • Take time to know your family medical history. It will help doctor in anticipating your potential risk for some illnesses.
  • Say no to smoking. Save your heart, and all of your body organs!
  • Skip the salt. Salt is coronary heart disease best friend.
  • Know your ABC! Did you know that raised blood pressure, raised cholesterol and smoking account for over 80% of cardiovascular diseases? Maintain regular wellness visits with your doctor for routine check-ups to track your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels.
  • Know the signs. Knowing the early signs of stroke and heart attack is critical. Those life-threatening emergencies require early medical intervention. The more you know about the alarm signals the earlier you will act.
  • Laugh more. Laughter is a stress reducer and a boost for your defense system against cardiac problems. A daily dose of laughter is associated with lower prevalence of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Keep on the move. The more active or fit you are, the less coronary heart disease (CHD) you tend to develop. Don’t forget to count the other benefits: Reduction in body weight, increase in exercise tolerance, lower blood pressure, higher insulin sensitivity, a reduction in bad cholesterol, and an increase in good cholesterol.
  • Aim for 7 to 8 hours sleep a night.  Sleep duration above or below the median of 7 to less than 8 hours per night is associated with an increased prevalence of hypertension, particularly at the extreme of less than 6 hours per night. So make sure you get enough adequate rest for your body and mind.

Saffron in El Guezira Compound

Saffron Cairo Restaurant

Those in the know appreciate Saffron for its well-structured menu and the welcoming ambience. Much as we keep coming back for dishes we love, it is always exciting to see what new creations have been added. We dropped in for a mid-week dinner, and loved every bite.

New menu items: Melted Provolone, Tuna Tartare with Avocado and Sesame Ginger Dressing, Beetroot, Goat Cheese and Walnut Salad, Veal Chop with Rocca, Parmesan and Cherry Tomatoes, Chinese Dumplings, Baked Potato Wedges, Calzone with Nutella.

Dishes Sampled

With taste buds on high alert we wasted no time in heading for some of the newest additions to the menu. The Tuna Tartare delivered beautifully on texture and flavor, the dressing complemented the combination perfectly. We kept the mood light with a Beef Carpaccio, which came with Rocca, shaved Parmesan and cherry tomatoes, pretty as a picture and tasting just as good. Melted cheese is a fast track to our hearts at any time, so there was no way we were going to skip the Melted Provolone. Gooey and rich, it disappeared in a flash.

And when traditional Chinese Dumplings are a new menu addition, we just had to try. Not easy to make, these dumplings were as authentic as they come, right down to the bamboo steamer. We distracted ourselves with a tempting Shrimp and Avocado Salad, Spaghetti Con Bottarga and Penne Arrabiata until our much anticipated Veal Chop and Fillet with Pepper Sauce arrived. Every dish delivered amazingly on flavor and presentation, with only the highest quality produce being used, and we had no qualms about overindulging.

The breaded Veal Chop was melt-in-the-mouth tender, and a generous size; the fillet was superb, with the best pepper sauce we have come across in years. Every bite affirmed that Saffron has the art of exceptional dining down to a ‘t’.

Without guilt or any sense of shame, yes, we went for dessert as well. Chocolate Soufflé is never to be passed up, and just mention Calzone with Nutella and our eyes light up. Saffron, you turn even a simple night out into a memorable feast. Chapeau!

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

Saffron is renowned for its cheese fondue, and we would love to try it. Beverages selection includes a full bar, with some fun soft additions. Ice-cream soda anyone?

Décor & Ambience

Comfortable, intimate and cozy with polished, relaxed service, you feel immediately at home.

Clientele Mix: Saffron is a haven for all ages, families, couples and groups of friends.

Price Range: Moderate upwards.

Worth Noting: Takeaway and delivery are available to Al Guezira and other neighboring compounds. Special events can be booked, along with birthdays and other celebrations. Theme nights with a focus on different cuisines are a regular feature as well.
