Where the Crawdads Sing

By Delia Owens

The story follows two timelines that slowly intertwine. The first timeline describes the life and adventures of a young girl named Kya as she grows up isolated in the marsh of North Carolina from 1952 to 1969. The second timeline follows a murder investigation of Chase Andrews, a local celebrity of Barkley Cove, a fictional coastal town of North Carolina. Where the Crawdads Sing is a heartbreaking coming-of-age story which reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Ta-Che Boutique Hotel in Fayoum

Hotels in Fayoum

By Zainab AbdulAziz

An hour and a half from Cairo, near the shore of Lake Qarun on the outskirts of Tunis Village, Omar Abu Gabal has established an oasis of calm seclusion named Ta-Che. This boutique guesthouse has six rooms of varying sizes, gorgeous gardens, a pool, and a firepit for those nights spent stargazing.

How it all started…

Abu Gabal, a Cairene by birth, has family roots in Fayoum and spent a lot of time in the surrounding area since childhood. After 30 years working in the agricultural export business, he decided to share his experience of Fayoum with visitors. Ta-Che opened last December to great success.

The views from the balconies and terraces are unmatched, with a lush 360 view of palm trees, fruit tree groves, lake view and mountain plateau. Abu Gabal’s inspiration for the space is born from the clean and fresh air, with copious amounts of seating corners and space for visiting groups wishing to relax and unwind. More Travel Reviews https://bit.ly/395DzSu

The kitchen offers traditional Fayoumi cuisine such as home-raised pigeon and duck, a famous staple of the area. Poultry, tagine dishes, an assortment of mezze, salads, soups and pastas are available, with breakfast options either foul and taameya or heavenly feteer with honey. Every dish is clean and homemade, absolutely delicious and perfect for sharing.

Having visited Fayoum many times, what sets Ta-Che apart is a homely and familiar feeling, and the stunning view unmatched by any other lodge or hotel in the area. The location is truly one of a kind in that respect. Additionally, the quality of the service and attention to detail is higher than similar lodgings in the area. The staff are courteous and eager to please, making every visitor feel cared for.

With a small number of rooms, bookings are hot and in demand. Abu Gabal currently has plans to renovate some of the interiors of the rooms and plans a future expansion plan to build up to 30 more rooms.

Need to know essentials

  • Ta-Che currently has six rooms, four upstairs and two downstairs.
  • All rooms have a lakeview, with the exception of one garden view room downstairs.
  • All rooms benefit from air conditioning, and the pool is open year-round.
  • The kitchen closes at 9 pm in winter and 11 pm in summer.
  • Ta-Che has the space and capacity to host events.
  • Desert excursions, sandboarding, camping, visits across the lake and to Wadi el Hitan are available by request.

Bosporus: An Authentic Turkish Experience at City Center Almaza

Turkish Food in Heliopolis

Turkish cuisine is largely known through doner and kebab, thankfully, Bosporus is here to delight us with more Turkish eats. Turkish cuisine overlaps our Middle Eastern food in so many ways that at a first glance you might think you have eaten it before, but Turkish cuisine is full of its’ own character, and Bosporus proves it by staying true to core Turkish cuisine. Turkish Food in Heliopolis

Dishes Sampled

Our review fell on one of the coldest days of the year so consequently we started off with a warm, hearty red lentil soup, which in Turkey is called Mercimek Çorbası. Our soup was seasoned with cumin and Aleppo pepper, garnished with a slice of lemon on the side, served with a particular type of bread called Ramazan Pidesi. A sort of leavened, round shaped bread, decorated with a crisscross pattern, topped with nigella and sesame seeds.

Following that we were presented with a beautiful selection of 7 traditional dips and an assortment of mezze. Muhammara; Aci Ezmi – a rather spicy tomato dip, very typical of Turkish cuisine; Cacik – a refreshing yogurt, cucumber, mint, garlic dip; Hummus; Moutabel with tahina; Babaganoush and Olives Salad. A large puffed flat bread came along with the mixed appetizers platter. The tantalizing smell of warm bread coming from the oven filled our table. Like that, we were set to scoop into the dips.

Soon after a sequence of the restaurant’s best dishes arrived one after the other. The Bosporus Salad is a signature dish, composed of three different types of lettuce, chopped tomatoes, pomegranate, white slated cheese, golden raisins, and crushed walnuts. Followed by Antep Lahmacun which is the equivalent of a thin crusted pizza – seasoned with minced meat and spices. There are two options: regular or spicy. Next came the lamb Kofta, then vine leaves served warm, topped with Iskander sauce (tomato, garlic and basil) and served with the typical Turkish yogurt, a bit sourer than we expected.

As the main dishes arrived, we realized that Lamb is the basic Turkish kitchen meat. It was present in all our mains, marinated, grilled, plain, stewed. Kurzu Pirzola – this dish of lamb chops was pure juiciness and tenderness with a pleasant lemony sharpness from the sumac used in the marinating. Bosporus Mixed Grill was garnished with rice, charcoal vegetables and thinly sliced red onions. The Testyi Kebab dish is a show on its own.

On a separate table, high flames surrounded a sealed clay pot filled with slow cooked meat and vegetables, with the unveiling of the contents inside the pottery happening before your eyes. A steaming hot lamb cubes kebab stew on a tomato base sauce, onions, garlic and full of aromatic spices. We could not have left without the sweetness of the Turkish desserts. The richness of the Baklava was intriguing with ice cream inside the filo pastry, topped with chopped pistachio. We wrapped up with a special homemade Ayran – a super refreshing, simple mixture of yogurt, water and salt.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages

The Bosporus menu consists of over 170 items, so plenty of options to try on each visit. It also includes both cold and hot drinks.

Décor & Ambience

Decor is clean and elegant. A beautiful arabesque wooden wall panel gives the place an Ottoman vibe. The restaurant has two seating areas: an indoor area that faces the inside of the mall and a much larger outdoor area within the mall’s food hub court space. Turkish Food in Heliopolis

Tabibi: Support Can Be the Best Gift for Mother’s Day

Self-care for mothers

Sometimes the best gift is the gift of support. Mothers have the toughest job in the world. On duty 24/7, juggling careers and pouring out unconditional love and support to their families. It is hardly surprising that their own wellbeing often comes second after caring for the entire family.

Take your Mother’s Day celebration to another level this year with these suggestions, courtesy of Tabibi. Sometimes your care or help is all it takes to make a mother happy.

Self-care for a new mom:

  • Ensure that she has the right expert support team: family doctor, pediatrician and a breastfeeding specialist.
  • Take her post-partum depression seriously and raise your awareness of it. Postnatal depression affects around 10% to 22% of women after having a baby. Dealing with post-partum depression is critical and needs extensive family support and sometimes expert help.

Self-care for elderly mothers and grandmothers:

  • Make sure she is up to date with her vaccinations.
  • Help her find a good doctor or a geriatric doctor to follow up with, and accompany her on her visits. Sometimes talking about health challenges for women can be a daunting task.
  • Help her find a passion and a reason to wake up every morning. Suggest activities together, and keep them regular and consistent.
  • Take a look around her home; lower her risk of falling by making sure her home is safe for her.

Self-care for all ages:

  • Encourage her to make her health a priority by making it a priority yourself! A simple activity and right meal plan and vitamins can be easily missed in this hectic life.
  • Ensure she gets regular check-ups, lab tests, and screening tests. Is she aware of her ABC? (Hemoglobin A1C /Blood pressure/Cholesterol)

The gift she’ll love most this Mother’s Day is feeling supported and surrounded, 365 days a year. Make this an amazing Mother’s Day.

Neya: A Hub for Charity Work, Volunteering, Donating & Giving Back!

There’s no feeling more fulfilling than contributing to someone in need, be it in the form of a donation, a service or a step up to a better life.  But it can be difficult to know how, where and why. That is where Neya enters the picture, with a website offering information on worthwhile causes, and a means of contributing. NEYA is officially launching its application before Ramadan. Users will be able to track their activities and donations, as well as share it with friends.

The Beginning of Neya

CEO and Founder Hana El Sadat got the idea for Neya when she was in college in Boston when she wanted to volunteer somewhere but was frustrated that there wasn’t an online tool to help her. This was 10 years ago.

When she moved back to Egypt she started fundraising, collecting in-kind donations for the homeless and creating a pop-up shop called The Street Store. She was doing the work manually herself and decided to create Neya officially due to the large number of charities with little to no online presence and the lack of volunteering opportunities to participate in. Neya is a facilitator that can work with any entity or cause. Bringing charity into the 21st century.

Neya’s Primary Objectives and How they are Met

Neya’s purpose is to bring together a community of individuals whose aim is to give back and create a sustainable ecosystem. It is a platform made to facilitate volunteering, donating, sponsoring, supporting, and creating awareness for a cause or initiative. This tool allows the development community, whether it’s individuals, small groups, corporate organizations, non-governmental or social service agencies to enhance their activities.

Any members, organizations, entities, and corporations are pre-approved by Neya in accordance with respective government authorities to ensure the legitimization of the platform members. Neya enables set participants to jumpstart their initiatives by first creating awareness towards a cause and second, by supporting their activities with a call to action for donation or volunteering.

The landscape of charitable giving has been transformed by the digital era and an application like Neya allows for a new tech savvy generation to give back in an effective way. By modernizing philanthropic activities, Neya engages millennial and Gen X users to communicate and collaborate for worthy causes by simplifying the process and bringing key agents of change together for collective sustainable development.

  • To facilitate and promote sustainable development activities and collaboration
  • To ensure harmonious synergy and thus worthy driven efforts

What Neya Does:

  1. Fundraising:

Through the online platform, they create campaigns to collect online donations – of monetary value or in-kind donations for any respective NGO to serve their needs. In-kind donations include clothing, kitchen supplies, toys and stationary supplies as well as books.

  1. Marketplace:

An online marketplace sells NGO merchandise and handcrafts by local artisans who need support. Through Neya’s marketplace, businesses will benefit from awareness, reaching a wider audience and increasing their sales. Moreover, being a partner on the marketplace guarantees you an invitation to all bazaars they sponsor and host.

  1. CSR:

Because it is important to give back, Neya offers CSR services to all private sector companies and corporations, to encourage them to be socially responsible. They handle and manage all their CSR campaigns, and link companies with philanthropic needs that can benefit from their professional expertise.

  1. Volunteering:

Through the platform, the community can stay up to date with all volunteering opportunities in different projects that Neya is a part of. Neya also creates volunteering opportunities for those interested as well as volunteering for companies. Corporate volunteering opportunities are crucial for companies and their employee development. Neya as an entity has two to three events per month, all year round they rotate to different places in need and will be in Hassan Sabry St., in Zamalek every Friday and Saturday during Ramadan, and Alexandria as well.

  1. Educational toolkits on development:

Neya contributes to the educational system by raising awareness of important causes and SDGs, to raise a generation that is aware and well educated on the development field. It enables millennials to take part in contributing to community services. Covering all development composed of individuals, small groups, business and corporate organization, and NGO’s in a platform for the development community.

Neya’s community ecosystem is non-governmental organizations and social service agencies. The purpose of this tool for awareness is volunteering, donating, sponsoring and supporting a cause or initiative. Neya is here to facilitate charitable and development needs and to support their efforts.

  1. Up-to-date news on development and charity:

Neya’s website is always up-to-date with all the news on development and charity, they want to increase awareness and build a well-informed community in addition to their social media outlets on Facebook and Instagram.

Neya’s Team

The team consists of tech experts, logistics whizzes and people who really believe in making a difference. They go the extra mile to make sure things are done the right way and that we introduce something new to the market. The business development team and volunteering team are the busiest since they have their own volunteering events several times a month which they organize from start to finish, and offer logistics to volunteers. The majority of the team is women.

Neya’s Challenges and Solutions

More and more people now realize how much easier Neya has made their lives. It took time for people to realize the power of collaboration and a new generation of ideas. This took a lot of pushing from Neya’s part just to get their work out there and they are proud to show people how they can use technology as a tool to do good.

Getting Support from within the Community

CEO and Founder Hana El Sadat tells us how she’s proud of being Egyptian and humbled by her people and community. Neya was launched a year ago with zero marketing. Their work did the talking and the amount of support they have gotten from the community to this day is what keeps them going. People want their help or want to help them because they are encouraged by the initiative. They document all their work and share it. Transparency is what they give people and they like it, they respect it.

Young people looking to set up an initiative that benefits the community, listen up:

Age is just a number, if you have the experience and the knowledge, fight for what you think is right, fight for your idea and your work will speak for you. That will be the echo of your success.

Shared Story:

Last week we had a volunteering event and we received a message on social media from a mother who bakes. She generously donated homemade cupcakes to orphans at one of our events because she saw our work. We communicated back and to my surprise we received customized cupcakes in different flavors for each child and volunteer that day. To me, really there aren’t people like Egyptians, “kheir Masr fe Na-sha” as they say, and this is why Neya continues to fight.

We have a project called the Zero Waste Initiative. Through it, we provide CSR for local designers by taking their left-over waste and we provide it to women who reuse the material, turning it into new products and selling them. This helps provide income to support their households.

Following the popular trend of Poke bowls in some of the world’s leading culinary capitals, the owner of Let’s Poke was inspired to open the first dedicated restaurant to Poke bowls in Egypt. Their signature bowls are the Salmon Poke Bowl with Ponzu soy sauce and the tuna with wasabi mayo sauce. The menu is comprised of three parts: first you pick a protein, four add-ins, a crunchy topping and a sauce. There’s a variety of protein options, vegetables, nuts, fruits and sauces available that you mix and match, or you could just pick one of the signature bowls.

The base of every Poke bowl is steamed rice; we went for the salmon special with pink salmon cubes resting on a bed of warm steamed rice, edamame beans, cherry tomato halves, crunchy spring onion slices, sweet mango cubes, sesame seeds and Ponzu soy sauce.

We also gave the Chicken Poke a try, the bowl had the typical steamed rice base, topped with seasoned grilled chicken cubes, edamame beans, sweet corn, pomegranate, avocado cubes, crispy onion and honey mustard sauce. Our bowls were quickly assembled in front of us and they were a delight to watch.

11 Things to Know About Huda El Mufti

By: Mariam Elhamy

The eagerly awaited project from the mind of legendary writer and director Mohamed Hefzy and directed by Mohamed Sakr has finally hit the cinema after ages on hold. The gritty blockbuster revolves around events taking place in an unnamed Red Sea resort town several years ago and features a number of well-known names like Eyad Nassar, Basma, Injy el Mokkadem, Ahmed Malek, Shereen Reda and more. With a story revolving around the lives of several characters from all walks of life, this film is one to watch. We sat down with Huda El Mufti to talk about her character in the film.

What makes you love this movie?

This movie is different in many ways, even in the filming locations. It seemed like a simple enough shoot on paper, but it actually turned out to be challenging. The story addresses a specific layer in society that is everywhere around us, but we can’t easily see it and that’s what attracted me the most to this film.

Tell us the scene you had the most fun shooting?

All of them were fun to shoot, but specifically any shoots that involves traveling were great because the group of actors were so nice. Also the party scenes for sure, because they seemed so real!

Do you like traveling?

I love traveling, but I get a bit worried about traveling far, so I usually tend to travel to nearer places. When it’s worth it, I don’t mind going the distance.

Do you relate to your character in the movie in any way?

Not at all … and you’ll see why if you watch the film.

Do you have any upcoming projects?

I’m working on the series Valentino for Ramadan with Adel Emam and Ramy Emam, and a film named Dido which is coming in Eid.

Any laughable moments on set?

All the time, there was a lot of laughter, joking and playing. But there was serious work as well …

What did you do on New Year’s Eve?

I spent it chilling in Siwa.
