When in need of reliable and delicious Japanese food, Torii in Cairo Marriott Hotel and Omar Khayyam Casino should not be forgotten. A mainstay on the Cairo dining scene, Torii’s culinary minds are always reinventing the menu and taking the customer’s desires and satisfaction into account. We heard word that a new menu had landed, so we hurried over to taste the goods.

New on the menu: A lot! The menu has taken a pretty massive overhaul. Torii have a new take on Thai Tom Yam Soup, Ebi Furai (shrimp in spicy mayonnaise or tempura sauce), Thai Papaya Salad, Thai Beef salad, Soba and Udon Noodles with beef and veggies, and a whole host of different sushi combinations, including a special one for salmon lovers.

Dishes Sampled

We started our meal with a spicy bowl of the Thai Tom Yam Soup and a serving of Edamame beans with sea salt flakes, perfect starters to warm up on a chilly evening. Torii’s soup is magnificent, with tender and juicy large shrimp swimming in a spicy sour broth with mushroom, lemon grass, lime leaf and fresh coriander. Next came the delightful salads, Sake Salad with salmon and Maguro Salad with tuna. Layered raw salads comprising of raw fish and avocado, each salad has a special touch. The Sake Salad has a layer of tempura crisps, while the Maguro Salad offers a blend of Japanese spices and caviar.

Next, we tucked into a 24-piece order of Makisushi Specialties comprising Tempura, California, Spicy Salmon, Spicy Tuna, Dragon and Kurimi rolls. What sets Torii’s sushi apart from the dozens of sushi restaurants in Cairo is less about innovation and more about freshness. Sushi making is truly a science and a delicate process, and nothing beats an order of sushi that is prepared the correct way. We didn’t want to miss out on the Asian Specialties menu, so an order of Singaporean Prawns and Stir-fried Noodles quickly followed. Sautéed shrimp, baby corn, bell pepper, carrot and asparagus arrived tossed in a spicy Singaporean chili sauce. The shrimp is beautifully tender at Torii, and that is always a blessing, but we found the sauce too sweet for our liking and probably would have opted for something else had we known. The stir-fried noodles were perfect comfort food for a chilly night and came with a choice of beef, chicken and shrimp.

The Teppenyaki set menu looks very enticing and offers groups of up to 8 people a live cooking experience. We’d also love to sample the Sake Tataki (salmon in sesame oil dressing), Ebi Furai (shrimp in tempura sauce) and the Thai Beef Salad.
