Into The World of Locandt Bir El Watawyt With Ahmed Mourad

After publishing his seventh novel, iRead team sat down with the prominent novelist and scriptwriter Ahmed Mourad to explore his newest novel Locandt Bir El Watawyt which translates as The Bats Well Hotel, for us to hear all about it, and the inspiration behind it…

What inspired you to dive into the world you created in the novel?

Firstly, I noticed we have a shortage of serial-killing novels, we don’t have the literature that covers this area. Secondly, crime fiction is stigmatized as popular literature, and the term “popular” is wrongly used, describing it as popular means it’s loved and appreciated by the mass, not that it’s low level or quality.

Thirdly, the 1865 period is a bit concealed, and we know next to nothing about it in the history of literature, so without question, this stimulated me to write about it. Therefore I wanted to create a mixture of all the things I long to read about but didn’t find in Arabic literature.

Are there true events or characters in the story?

The whole story is pure fiction. The novel takes place in a time that actually existed. Some factors and characters are real, but of course, all that occurs in the novel are works of the imagination.

The novel is inspired by reality, but it went into a fiction area that I’ve never tried before in any of my previous novels. For the novel to be revolving around the experience of a schizophrenic paranoid person, it definitely leads to a new result in writing.

Were the readers’ reactions to the novel as you expected?

No matter how hard you try, the reader always surprises you. Some readers got the trick of the novel, and that I will play with the paranoia and schizophrenia card, and that this is the diary of a madman after all, so we have to follow his madness and see where he will lead us.

Some other readers didn’t get this point or didn’t completely grasp it, so they wondered how a man can call himself a messenger of God, what they missed is the fact that one of the symptoms of paranoia and schizophrenia is the patient thinking they are magnificent. Other readers started judging the character, thinking it’s promoting a way of thinking, even though it’s just a novel.

Is there a certain message you wanted to deliver through the story?

The message of a novel makes it carry more than its capacity, the main message should be for people to enjoy and be entertained; to read about a different era, to live an unusual experience. Don’t believe novels, they are after all just a tool to tell tales, we should enjoy them without conditions and pressure on them.

Every reader can come out with a message on their own, and it will be a special product for them. Furthermore, we should learn not to read history from novels, if we want to, we should turn to history books that study eras and facts.

What do you say to people who are about to read the novel?

Put aside all your convictions, just read without resisting the events of the novel. Don’t try to analyze it, just try to solve the mysteries and live the experience with the main character. Don’t be afraid of the taboos that you might feel were broken because novels are written to break taboos; slavery was at a time legal, and some of the main factors that helped put a stop to it were stories, novels and movies.

Art gives a nice color to everything.

Kimbo: Italian-American Cuisine at City Center Almaza

Kimbo is an Italian-American restaurant offering heartwarming, comfort food in a relaxing yet elegant atmosphere. From breakfast to dinner, to a chat over coffee and dessert, you will surely find something to please your mouth and soul.

Dishes Sampled

We arrived around noon just in time for a big brunch and started with the Authentic Breakfast. This consisted of two sunny side up eggs on a layer of sourdough bread accompanied by slices of turkey and beef bacon, mini portions of cream cheese, labneh, honey and jam along with a freshly baked plain croissant. All breakfast choices come served with a green salad on the side.

Next up we delved into a dish of creamy Polenta topped with two poached eggs, garnished with sautéed mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes, and sprinkled with chia seeds for a final nutritious touch. The polenta was a pleasant surprise, tasty and loaded with flavor – highly recommend.

We were served one more breakfast dish, the Salmon Poach. Smoked salmon on a layer of sourdough bread topped with two poached eggs, hollandaise sauce and capers. We enjoyed an Almond Croissant with a nice warm cup of coffee to wrap up our lovely brunch. We also sampled the Popcorn Latte, a signature Kimbo drink consisting of popcorn syrup, coffee and milk. A tad sweet, we were still amused by the taste of popcorn syrup.

A Recipe for Daphne: Old Love, Historic Recipe & Family Intrigue

Nektaria Anastasiadou is the author of the forthcoming A Recipe for Daphne. She is the 2019 winner of the Zografeios Agon, a Greek-language literary award founded in 19th-century Constantinople. Currently, she lives in Istanbul.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I always wanted to be a writer because I have always loved losing myself in the imaginary worlds of novels. For me, being a writer is neither a gift nor a curse. It is a vocation that requires absolute dedication, a great deal of work, and much patience. I feel blessed to have all three.

A Recipe for Daphne is your first novel. Where did the main idea for the book come from?

One day in 2010 or 2011, an elderly Rum (from the Greek word Romiosi, which literally means ‘Roman’), gentleman told me about a forgotten pastry called the Balkanik. He described it as a large éclair, but with differently flavored crèmes inside. Each crème symbolized a different Balkan people and their harmonious coexistence.

Because the peaceful coexistence of peoples with different religions, cultures, and languages is something that fascinates me, I knew that I wanted to write about a pastry chef who would resurrect that old recipe. Thus, my character Kosmas was born.

At that time, I was renting an apartment in the historical street of Faik Paşa in the Çukurcuma neighborhood of Istanbul. One evening I was sitting in my cumba—a traditional bay window—and imagining how the street’s old buildings would have looked when they were built in the nineteenth century, or even half a century prior. I began writing about them in my notebook from the perspective of an old man who had lived all his life on that street, who had seen its changes over time. That old man became Fanis.

The pastry and the street came together into a story when I had a discussion with friends about the difficulty of finding a mate within a small community (the Rum minority of Istanbul is estimated at about two thousand people). I wanted to write about this challenge, so Fanis and Kosmas had to be on the lookout for a Rum wife.

If she were already in Istanbul, they would have found her already because everyone knows everyone within a community of two thousand. Consequently, a woman would have to come from outside, but I didn’t want her to come from Greece because I don’t think that we should limit ourselves to the idea that only Greeks understand Rum culture. For that reason, I made Daphne American.

Can you share a little of the story?

Fanis, a widower and retired antique dealer, is at the center of a group of Istanbul Rums who meet regularly for afternoon tea in Cihangir. When Fanis’s friend Gabriela brings her American niece to tea, Fanis is smitten but also unsettled because Daphne reminds him of the fiancée that he lost during the 1955 riots.

Fanis’s friend Kosmas, a master pastry chef on the lookout for a good Rum wife, also falls for Daphne. She is intrigued by his search for a forgotten Ottoman recipe, but can she love him in return? Or will a family secret threaten their chances?

Living the Life You Seek

home-stay

By Maggie Balbaa

In this very unique experience we are enduring together in 2020, our lives have changed drastically in so many ways. The pandemic, the home-stay and all of the related stress, if anything, has made us realize some deep truths we might have been otherwise “asleep” to.

We’ve been following unconscious patterns of repetitive thoughts, emotions and behaviors, over and over again. Just like a guinea pig, trapped in a wheel, exerting so much effort, thinking the world revolves around that little circuit of his. When the lockdown hit, the little fellow had to step down off his habitual daily routine… and suddenly he could see the hoop.

Maybe it was a surprise, maybe not. But in all cases, when forced to take an observer position of the hoop, to see it from the outside, and discover what we call in coaching “the personal autopilot”, it is pretty shocking to the whole system. That little fellow represents each one of us drowning in our daily routines, being sucked up by our self-created “comfort zone”, that is, in reality most of the time more of a “suffering zone”. In that space lies a golden opportunity to activate real personal change by reflecting on what really matters in life and seeing in which areas we want to grow. Here are some tips that can help in that shift:

  1. Assess your current state.

This will help you see what is serving you and what is not serving you anymore. Real change starts when space is made for it after the process of letting go of the unnecessary to allow space for the new… A ‘new you’ that brings you a sense of fulfilment, achievement and ignites your self-worth light.

This can be simply done by truly observing your current state and where difficulties and struggles are situated for you. You will even discover some areas where you wish to grow such as hobbies that you have left behind, things that you want to learn or some needed self-development.

  1. Set new outcomes for yourself.

I prefer the word “outcome” to goal. For one, because it is more used in the Neuro Linguistic Programming world, and two, because it signifies more that the outcome you get is based on the planning and effort that you do to reach it. For an outcome to become achievable, it needs to be personal, to be Owned by YOU. It also needs to be Specific which will give you more details and more insight into what you are hoping to accomplish. You can help yourself in that by answering these 5 key questions about your outcome: What? When? Where? How? And with whom?

For the outcome to be fulfilling, it needs to be matching with your values and beliefs. This is what is called an ecological/ethical check for your outcome, where you make sure nothing about it is negating one of your top values. For example: if you want to study a diploma abroad but this will require that you travel a lot, which will not fit with your family demands.  It will also likely collide with your “family” value, which could be one of your top values. A good solution would be to find an alternative for the travelling so as to make your outcome more satisfactory and ease the fulfilment sense that the outcome in itself is supposed to bring you.

  1. ALWAYS find room for yourself.

One of the most important teachings I received was to “Remember yourself, always”. We are all on a journey of self-discovery and growth. The key to doing that is by first knowing yourself. Consider it a trip that is very much worth taking. A deep dive into your own values, beliefs, life strategy, personal patterns and systemic view will be of great benefit regardless of where you are currently in your life. It is never too late and it is never too early when it comes to this type of observing that generates a lot of change.

  1. Daily.

Do you remember the guinea pig example? Meditation can give you the opportunity to step down off the wheel and observe what is going on with you and your life. This mental break does wonders to your hyper active brain, giving it room to break the thoughts cycle and allow what is commonly called, “out of the box” thinking throughout your day.

Meditation is like a sport, the more you train your whole system on it, the more the muscles grow and the more you start to feel the benefits in your daily life. The ideal dose is 20 minutes a day, but even a small exercise of breathing for 5 minutes will make a difference.

  1. Seek help.

Whenever you need to, seek professional help. The word help here varies from help in the work-place, to help with tasks you procrastinate, to the kind of help you need when you feel stuck in the same spot in your life, this constitutes a main stressor. Finding what pleases you and charges your soul is something you can seek help with. A lot of that help is now offered online, especially with the pandemic phase that we are going through. Help is literally one zoom call away.

  1. Move on with your lessons-learnt.

During those traumatic experiences that bare sudden changes, we tend to also rediscover what truly gives meaning to our lives. You might have been able to identify a thing or two that were taken for granted before, like those friends you have been wanting to see but didn’t make time for, or those hugs you missed because you sat in front of your TV and missed that gathering. Remind yourself of all of that and take it with you while you are moving on with your life. Hard times always hide buried hidden gems.

It is worth to mention that the group has developed its first touristic resorts on the tribal side of the north coast, so Marseilia resorts 1 and 2 had contributed to the group since then changing the map of the north coast and contributing to placing it on the global tourism map. Marseilia had the experiment once more by launching Cascadia – Sidi Abdel Rahman its latest project in north coast at kilo 134.5 Alexandria-Matrouh road.

The project is in the heart of Sidi Abdel Rahman, on an area of 40 acres, with an investment value estimated at 5 billion pounds. Sherif Heliw – Marseilia Group Chairman – stated that “Cascadia” project is an addition to Marseilia real estate portfolio that extends throughout Egypt over 20 years in the Egyptian market, as Marseilia insisted in that project on uniqueness and excellence in providing all that is new for Its customers.

“We have done many financial, market and investment studies to provide unique and distinct services for the benefit of customers that add value to the group’s projects and ensure the Continuity of life in the village throughout the year.”

The design of the project is unique and very distinctive in a way that simulate the Italian style. The residential units are on a group of floating islands surrounded by the largest lagoons and crystal lakes from all sides so it had been called creative island and Inspired by the project design and services it was crystallized in the image of “ the woman of the waterfall “ which combines elements of pure nature and beauty of design. The project will also include a touristic hotel, a Kids Zone , an entertainment island, an outdoor gym and a playground area for different sports.

The project will also include the first medical resort affiliated to the international “ELAJ” group in the north coast, whose branches are spread in eleven countries around the world, to serve the entire Alamein region.

“Heliw” added: We are held in continuous workshops with the stakeholders of ” ELAJ ” Group to put the finishing touches in reviewing the designs and graphics for the Medical Resort and it will be arranged soon for a big celebration on the occasion of the joining of a large health system such as ” ELAJ ” Group in Egypt for one of the group’s projects, and it is being prepared To sign contracts for the implementation of the largest water lagoons in the north coast with Crystal Lagoons International company in Cascadia project.
