20 Things to Do On New Year’s Eve in Quarantine

Are you used to partying like crazy on New Year’s Eve? We know it’s a bummer that all the events are being canceled this year and we know you’re staying home to make sure that you and your family are safe. For that reason, we’re taking the NYE party to our homes! Here are a few ideas of things you can do to celebrate the end of this year at home.

By Mariam Elhamy

  1. Plan a virtual party with your friends or family and make sure everyone is dressed up and online at the same time and play song choices by everyone in the call.
  2. Send out snacks, drinks or pizza to the people you normally party with so you all share the same meal. You could also do a virtual baking class where everyone follows your steps and instructions.
  3. Do a “throwback” themed game where everyone shares their favorite memory of the year and how they did things differently than normal because of social distancing.
  4. Do a Netflix watch party and binge watch 3 movies you all love. Or have an outdoor movie night with a projector.
  5. Online karaoke! Sing your heart out and share it with everyone.
  6. Play Act it Out or Charades and make everyone guess what you’re doing.
  7. Have your family take turns giving each other massages, manicures and pedicures.
  8. Put up a tent inside the house and pretend you’re camping. Bring roasted marshmallows.
  9. Write small notes of funny things people do without noticing and take turns reading them out loud and trying to guess who does what.
  10. Play The Floor is Lava, where you can only walk on furniture and if any part of your body touches the floor, you are out!
  11. Learn some simple magic tricks on Youtube and show them off.
  12. Start a 500-piece puzzle.
  13. Do the musical chairs game at home on Christmas music.
  14. Play Guess The Smell. Put different nice or not-so-nice smelling items in a bag and make everyone smell and guess. The person who guesses the most items wins.
  15. Play Dark Room. Turn off the lights and have someone go outside the room. Everyone hides and the person outside has to come look for them.
  16. Buy or make your own pinata and BOOM CANDY!
  17. Make towers with lego pieces. The tallest tower wins.
  18. Play Two Truths and a Lie where each person tells 2 truths and 1 lie. Everyone has to guess which is the lie.
  19. Host a neighborhood floating sky lantern release at midnight.
  20. Do a countdown virtually and pop confetti or fireworks.

Dorak Gai – Wegz

Dorak Gai made a huge buzz with its electro video and cool beats. Wegz outdid himself again after his notorious Bazzet Khales.

Fokak – Double Zuksh Ft. 3enba

Oriental beats and trap have established themselves to be a great combo! That’s what we hear in Fokak, where Double Zuksh is dissing his enemies.

Sheraton – Marwan Moussa

Marwan Moussa appears in a new look in Sheraton. The video depicts him in a party in some apartment with girls dancing and a pole. He pretends to fish in the pool while everyone parties.

El Gemeza – Marwan Pablo x Molotof

Alexandria gave us a lot of trappers these past few months. Talking of the great Alexandria, Marwan Pablo sits in a truck as he talks about El Gemeza.

Pluto – Dizzy Too Skinny x Afroto

The hallucinations video is enough to make you feel that you’re on Pluto but the music is pretty popular as well.

21 – Wegz

Let’s not forget Wegz’s 21 which we always stumble on the numbers and lyrics but still love to listen to anyway!

Mesa – Abyusif

Shot in an indoor parking lot, Mesa still managed to get more than a million views and that’s because of Abyusif’s talent in songwriting and capturing the audience.

Barat – Abo El Anwar

A clever video and cool lyrics. Each time Barat comes on in the car we can’t help but sing along out loud.

Beera – Batistuta

New on the scene, Batistuta made a strong hit with Beera. We’re excited to see what he has in store for us next.

On a Regular – Vli Weezy

On a Regular’s fun tune and moving lyrics gets us dancing every time. It’s one of those trap hits you just can’t help but move to.

Producer May Odeh Talks about Her Award Winning Film 200 Meters

200 meters

Palestinian director and producer May Odeh talks to us about her award-winning film 200 Meters. The film was premiered at the 77th Venice International Film Festival where it won the BNL People’s Choice Audience Award and was shown at the El Gouna Film Festival.

By Mariam Elhamy

Do you usually focus more on delivering what the audience wants or what you believe the industry is lacking?

As I produce I follow the stories that touch me. It does not matter if it’s a documentary, short of fiction. I guess this is the key that makes me commit to producing a film. So far I have produced many subjects with different visions, I’m so proud that all of the films were so well received both by the festivals and the audience.

Saying that, I’m searching for the sort of stories that the industry is lacking like family stories. I also want to produce content for kids and families in Arabic.

What role have film festivals played in the film industry so far? Why are they necessary? How do you get the most out of them?

As we all know, one of the most difficult issues we are facing in the film industry in the Arab world is distribution, so to have film festivals around the Arab world, in particular, helps the audience discover your film. Either from the chance to watch the film at the festival or hear about it from the buzz created by the press or from the prizes at the festival.

Festivals are also important for the industry before the film is even finished, through the co-production markets. I guess in the Arab region most of the festivals are aware of how important to make a market, to discover new projects that might be a hit in the upcoming years after the festival.

Any upcoming projects you’re currently working on?
Currently, I’m working to finish two documentaries, and developing a few features.

Director Ameen Nayfeh Talks about His Award Winning Film 200 Meters

200 meters

Palestinian director Ameen Nayfeh talks to us about his award-winning film 200 Meters. The film was premiered at the 77th Venice International Film Festival where it won the BNL People’s Choice Audience Award and was shown at the El Gouna Film Festival.

By Mariam Elhamy

Did you ever suspect that your film will create this huge buzz and be featured at more than one film festival?

There was hope for this of course, but the amazing buzz, selection for many prestigious festivals, and all these awards came as beautiful surprises.

This is a very emotional and sensitive topic. Did you have any dubiousness about choosing this topic?

It was about the forced separation from the start, and actually my personal background in relation to the story was the driving force of why I wanted to tell this story.

After seeing the huge success of this film, do you believe it will contribute to the cause or make a big change?

My dream was to tell this story and to make it reach as many people as I can, the success is amazing and overwhelming and makes me very proud that we were persistent to tell this story.

What films have been the most inspiring or influential to you and why?

The films from Ken Loach, the Dardenne brothers and Asghar Farhadi. Simply because I love the cinema that they produce and the subjects of working-class, ordinary people, people from the street that they talk about and I always get moved by the human stories and their complexities.

What was the most challenging thing you had to pull off during the making of this film?

The biggest challenge was to shoot the film in 22 days because that was the maximum number of days that our production could afford. Can you imagine shooting a road film in more than 35 locations in just 22 days! So, yes it was really challenging.

The other difficulty was that I wanted to shoot in real locations like next to the wall and real checkpoints, and that was also a big adventure because you can not get a permit to film there so we had to make very smart plans to make it work.

Were there any scenes that left you feeling too emotional?

Of course! Actually, they were many scenes especially those that we shot next to the wall and the checkpoints. Also, there was a particular scene that I will not spoil for the audience that made my tears fall down during filming the first take. But, then again the editing was getting emotional as well!

Did you find the feedback you were expecting from the audience?

The feedback has been extraordinary so far. I am so moved by the reception of the audience and all the Q&As that I had the luck to witness had been very interesting.

What I like the most is that many people came to me saying that they rarely get emotional watching films especially political ones but this film made their hearts twitch and many also told me that they finally understand what the wall represents in the Palestinian daily life.

Things to Do for an Extra Special Christmas

This year was not like any year and we all deserve a happy end to 2020. Make this Christmas extra special for you and those around you by doing a few things that could possibly change the course of this year and the year to come.

By Mariam Elhamy

Smile. Were you ever having a bad day and a random person on the street smiles at you and you suddenly feel okay? Take this Christmas as an opportunity to brighten someone’s day because smiling is contagious.

Buy someone a gift randomly. An unexpected gift from an unexpected person can feel extra special. Buy your neighbor, waiter at your favorite cafe, or even the beggar that always sits around the corner a special gift. Would be even nicer if it’s handmade.

Cook something special for someone you love. There’s no greater feeling than cooking something yourself and sharing it with the people you love. Don’t make excuses this time, look up a nice easy recipe and start working with your hands.

Get decorating! Nothing puts you in the festive mood more than hanging tree ornaments, listening to Christmas songs and drinking hot chocolate.

Karaoke time: “All I want for Christmas is youuuuuuu”. Karaoke the night away with all your Christmas favorites. It’s a fun activity for everyone so make sure you get your friends and family involved.

15 Classic Christmas Karaoke Songs

Do some charity work. Everyone donates but not a lot of people volunteer or help out themselves. Make some orphans’ day and help out at a shelter or a food bank or even donate old toys or clothes. Helping others and making them happy is far more rewarding than you think it will be.

Secret Santa. Playing secret Santa is always fun especially with a big group of distant friends or at the office because you never know what to expect. Do the gift wrapping yourself for an even more special present, it’s pretty fun too!

Write your new year’s resolutions – because we all know how those turned out last year. No just kidding! Instead of writing your resolutions, write anything and everything totally crazy or unrealistic you wish for. Writing them down is actually the first step of making them happen, you’ll see.

Call someone unexpectedly. Phone up someone you haven’t seen or talked to in a while and truly ask about how they’ve been doing and wish them well. Watch how you’ll feel afterwards.

Do a treasure hunt. Hide any Christmas thingies in different places around the house and make everyone look for them, the person who finds and collects the most items gets to choose which Christmas movie to watch and gets movie treats.

Surprising Foods that Boost your Mood in Just Two Hours

foods that boost mood

In collaboration with Smith Publicity

Who doesn’t feel a little guilty about the overindulgence that seems unavoidable over the holiday season? A nibble here, an extra spoonful there… it all adds up. But according to food expert and author Christine DeLozier, many of those treats do have essential nutrients that boost our mental health.

Peppermint

foods that boost moodBring on the candy canes! Peppermint to help with memory and to relieve stress, making it the perfect sweet treat to cope with the super-busy whirlwind nature of the holiday season.

Apples

foods that boost moodApples are abundant in an antioxidant called flavonoids, which improves mood within just two hours of eating them! In one study, flavonoids improved cognitive function and the effects lasted six hours post-consumption.

Apples are loaded with other feel-good substances too, such as B vitamins. Who doesn’t love a fresh-baked apple pie? Or, for a lower-fat option, make some homemade applesauce with mood-boosting cinnamon.

Cranberries

foods that boost moodDon’t skip the cranberry sauce with dinner. Cranberries are loaded with vitamin C and flavonoids. As humans, we are unable to produce our own vitamin C, which is a major player in dopamine metabolism in the body. People with depression, mood and psychiatric disorders are quite often deficient in vitamin C.

Vitamin C rapidly improves mood, in fact, the higher our vitamin C levels are, the less confusion, anger and depression we have. Boil fresh cranberries with honey, grated nutmeg and cinnamon. Or you can add some mandarin orange slices to increase the mood-boosting ability.

Yams

Yams are loaded with vitamins and minerals including potassium, which helps maintain optimal cognitive function. Low potassium intake is associate with greater risk of mood disturbances, depression and tension. Potassium is considered a mental-health food because of its powerful effect on mood. As a major player in dopamine metabolism, potassium rapidly improves your mood.

A whopping 40% of the minerals of yams are in the skin! Try twice-baked yams, where you scoop out the flesh, mix it with a wee bit of maple syrup and aromatic spices such as cardamom and cloves. Top with toasted pecans for a delicious side dish.

Pumpkin/Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin is rich in mood-boosting minerals, such as potassium, as well as vitamin A, and B vitamins. Pumpkin seeds contain abundant tryptophan, which is a precursor of serotonin, a mood-boosting chemical produced by our bodies.

Tryptophan improved the mood of participants over the course of a four-day, high-tryptophan diet. Subjects experienced less anxiety and depressive symptoms. 6 Pumpkin seeds are also a good source of zinc, which can give an immediate boost to mood, having an antidepressant effect.

Everyone loves pumpkin pie, but baked pumpkin with a bit of salt and pepper is also delicious! Be sure to save the pumpkin seeds for roasting!

Mashed Potatoes

foods that boost moodThis holiday season, consider why mashed potatoes are a healthy food: Potatoes are loaded with vitamins and minerals including potassium, which helps maintain optimal cognitive function, and positive mood.

Those who maintain a high potassium, low sodium diet are less anxious, depressed, confused and angry, and have more energy and vigor. Potatoes are also a great source of vitamin C.

8 Warning Signs You’re Mentally and Emotionally Exhausted

Life is full of ups and downs and we can never avoid the downs no matter how hard we try. When things get a little frustrating and you’re acting out or not being yourself, look out for these 8 signs that are probably trying to tell you that you need a break or help.

By Mariam Elhamy

1. Easily Irritated

You’re frustrated and angered by the smallest inconvenience. You lose your temper very often and take it out on those around you. You feel impatient most of the time.

Try to communicate your frustration and find solutions instead of getting angry. The more you feel irritated find a relaxing spot and try to meditate or forget about everything for a few minutes and only focus on yourself.

2. Completely Unmotivated

It’s becoming especially difficult for you to focus or get anything done. Your goals and inspirations don’t seem as important to you as before. You don’t get excited about things you like the way you used to and you don’t really care much at all.

Make a list of all the small and big things that you usually like to do. One by one start doing those things and checking them off the list, even if you don’t feel like it. Doing those things will help you remember why you love them in the first place. Or, another approach you could try is by exploring other new things you’ve never tried.

3. Anxiety and Panic Attacks

Anxiety became your middle name. You find yourself panicking about the smallest things and you feel immediately stressed. You’re worried about what’s coming and you feel that you lost control over your life and everything around you.

Whenever you feel anxious remember that the thing you’re stressed about now will probably mean nothing in a few days or months. Always remember that when you stress about something you’re basically putting yourself through it twice, and it’s usually not even that bad.

4. Trouble Sleeping

You can’t sleep properly and your sleep is disturbed no matter what you do to try to put yourself in a calming state. You never feel well-rested because you wake up multiple times in the middle of the night and you start thinking, overthinking and stressing about the past or the future.

Forget about the tips and tricks of getting quality sleep and all that, the goal here is to not overthink when you’re trying to sleep. Busy yourself with a calming activity whether it be painting, exercising or watching your favorite sitcom.

5. Indigestion

You experience physical pain because of all the stress you’re under so you constantly have headaches, feel nauseous and get chest or stomach pains. When you’re feeling mentally exhausted your body immediately reacts the same way, lowering your immunity system and affecting other areas in the body.

Relax! Find the thing that relaxes you the most and take small breaks during the day to do it. If you feel like you’re about to breakdown call someone you can trust and ask them for advice. They’ll know what to do.

6. Crying Unexpectedly

You find yourself crying randomly when you’re driving, in the shower or at work. You can’t pinpoint a specific reason that made you cry, you just can’t help but feel the way you do.

Accept the tears and let them flow, you’ll feel calmer afterward.

Listen to Crybaby by Paloma Faith

7. Detached from Reality

You can’t plan or think straight about anything. You feel more and more detached from your friends and family and you’re never in the mood to socialize because all it seems to do is drain your energy. You don’t feel like yourself but more on autopilot.

Talk to someone close to you about how you feel and ask for their help. If you don’t want to do that then make your alone time enjoyable and don’t force yourself to go out when you clearly don’t want to because it will only put you in a worse mood.

8. Feeling Empty

You can’t remember the last time you were happy or excited about something because you feel numb and you feel like you’re making a huge effort with everything you do.

You’re feeling empty because you’ve lost interest in your relationship, career or hobbies. Look for the reason that’s making you this exhausted and work it out with your partner, friend or find a better job that makes you less stressed and more satisfied.

Your mental and emotional health is very important and if you keep ignoring them it will affect your physical health negatively which in turn will affect your mental state and the cycle repeats itself. If you don’t know how to fix it yourself don’t hesitate to ask for help from an expert, there’s no shame in admitting something is wrong and wanting to work on it.
