Fresh ideas and dependable quality are two factors that have given this homegrown brand a secure place in an increasingly competitive market.

The brainchild of two young architects, Alaa Khalil and Mohamed Lotfy, Get Drowzy has gone from strength to strength. We chatted with Alaa Khalil to see how it all happened.

Alaa, when and how did Drowzy come about?

Mohamed Lotfy and I have always joined forces in furniture and product design competitions since 2010. In June 2017, we realized there was a gap in the ready, quickly-delivered furniture market, and there was only one big name in the game.

We dug into it with intensive research, started testing and prototyping various products in July 2017 and finally in June of 2018 we finalized our first Drowzy collection and opened the doors of our Zamalek on-ground store (which we used to call the “trust gainer” store).

What were the challenges you faced in getting the company up and running?

Trust was our main challenge in the Egyptian market, that’s why in the first place we chose to invest in an on-ground “trust gainer” store, rather than to heavy-up on digital, to display and rotate the Drowzy catalog for buyers to check all our products in real life, which helped us grow conversions after a year through our online store.

Did you find it difficult to get acceptance at first for Egyptian made products?

As mentioned in the previous question, the main challenge wasn’t that the product is made in Egypt, but it was the fact that online shoppers in Egypt regularly go through the bad experience of not receiving the exact product they bought online through a brand’s website or a marketplace, especially in the home products market.

Have you seen an improvement in this?

Yes definitely, the decision of kicking off the brand’s catalog through on an on-ground store for a year to gain trust is being positively reflected day after day in our online store.

One Ninety Five: A Global Experience at The Park in Mall of Arabia

One Ninety Five has cleverly dubbed itself after the number of countries in the world. It has taken international cuisines from all over the world and blended them with a range of oriental cuisines, spanning from Morocco to the spice-rich countries of the Arabian Gulf.

Type of Cuisine

A fusion of international cuisines with an oriental twist. Tamarind Honey Lamb Quesadillas, Nachos Sojok Con Carne and Quinoa Tabbouleh with Tandoori Chicken, to name a few.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Signatures are everything that combines a dish from a global destination, infused with an oriental element. For starters, we kicked off with a Cheeseling Batata Harra, a mouthwatering combination of potato wedges drenched in a spicy, melted cheese topped with coriander and lemon juice. Alongside came a Crab N Go salad, a delicious concoction of different greens and vegetables layered with some finely sliced crab sticks drenched with a mango vinaigrette.

We opted for pizza rather than a main dish. Who could resist an Oriental Pulled Lamb and Feta Pizza, with a great balance of cheese and tomato sauce, as well as a crunchy yet fluffy crust? The pulled lamb meat was cooked to perfection and the chunks of feta cheese along with the greens enhanced the flavor.

Last, but certainly not least, we tackled a Profiterole Tower, consisting of 12 stacked profiterole pieces, each one filled with custard cream. The mouthwatering oriental twist to top off the dessert came in the form of halawa crumbs, pistachio, vanilla sauce, and a strawberry coulis.

Other Menu Options that Appealed

We will be back sometime for breakfast to try the Moroccan Egg Tagine, seasoned kofta and egg baked in an oven tagine, paired with tomato and topped with Istanbouli cheese.

The 195 Burger, named after the restaurant also intrigued us. Burgers are a staple of western cuisine, but by substituting the usual cheddar cheese slices with Kashkaval, along with some Sumac-infused Thousand Island sauce and fresh greens, it takes on a more oriental flavor and texture.

Beverages

Several types of coffee, including an impressive range of specialty coffees, along with French, Turkish, American, and other hot beverages. There were cold coffee options as well and a nice mix of cocktails and shakes.

Décor & Ambiance

The restaurant decor fuses different cultures together. As you enter, there is a wall that features the Leaning Tower of Pisa as well as the Statue of Liberty. Next to that, Islamic patterns and items add more of a traditional vibe to the space.

Social distancing and hygiene standards: A QR code menu is available, and tables were well stocked with hand sanitizers.

Clientele Mix: Families and groups of friends.

Price Range: Prices seem fair considering the quality and quantity of food.

How to Make Goal Setting Actually Work for You

If you are serious about success, then you will have to learn the art of goal setting. It is truly a fundamental principle of any successful individual, as it helps set a clear target to be achieved with a step-by-step plan.

The detailed plan guides you through your process, and aids in keeping you on track. Think of your goal as the monumental target that you want to reach and in order to reach it, you should set smaller objectives which will propel you forward on your mission.

It’s All in the Details

Goal setting is much easier if your smaller objectives are jotted down so that everything is precise and clear from the get-go. These objectives can even be set on a daily basis so that all your efforts are directed with purpose without wasting your valuable time, money, or effort.

Think of your daily objectives as a daily to-do list that you can cross-out once that specific task is accomplished. Understanding the strengths and weaknesses that you possess will become clearer as you begin to tackle all the obstacles that may face you on a daily basis.

Speaking of obstacles, you will definitely face your fair share of them on your way to achieving your ultimate goal. Obstacles can be related or unrelated to your goal, like the lack of time, or unforeseen circumstances for example.

Regardless of any obstacles, you can find that reaching your goal can be easier if you find yourself a form of motivation that can push you further when you’re feeling stuck.

Keep the Vision

The best form of motivation will be envisioning yourself achieving your goal, which is why vision boards can help. A vision board will act as a source of motivation each time you look at it and help you push through the obstacles by visualizing your goals. Sometimes even the smallest break can enhance your mood and leave you feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on the day.

The everyday process that you go through brings you one step closer to your goal. Pushing through an unpleasant day or lack of motivation will just add to the sense of accomplishment in the long run.

The importance of not giving up may sound cliché, but it is 100% true because the only guarantee in giving up is that there is no way for that goal to manifest. By not giving up, regardless of the circumstances, the possibilities are endless and you will not regret that decision no matter what the outcome is.

Discipline is the Key

Discipline is also a fundamental principle to reaching your goal because this is the one key aspect that allows you to keep pushing when there is resistance. Once developed, discipline is strengthened with repetition.

The only way to truly sharpen that skill is to do something that is uncomfortable on a daily basis, as it contributes to your tenacity and builds character. Developing discipline helps you refrain from self-sabotage, from giving in to weakness and eating that piece of cake, rather than ploughing through and feeling accomplished in that small feat of resistance.

Saying no to yourself and others when necessary goes hand in hand with achieving that grand goal. Going through that internal struggle and winning is the key to achieving that external goal and making it manifest into your world.

Remember:

Do not despair when things don’t go your way.
Remember that those small daily improvements will make a huge difference over time.
Record your objectives and goals.
Find your sources of motivation.
Develop your discipline.
Stay true to yourself and eventually you will reach your goal.

Fl!p: Seafood Treats at St 88 in Palm Hills

Fl!p is an adorably retro little food truck that simply screams ‘seaside’ with its summer-inspired menu, and it rolls out some of the freshest, tastiest seafood-based eats we have had in a while. Seafood, with everything from wraps and bites to burgers and sides.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

The signature Fl!p Burger made with teriyaki salmon, Poppin’ Shrimp Bites, Shrimp Avocado Wrap, Smoked Salmon Wrap. The fresh evening air at Street 88 in Palm Hills had perked our appetites up no end, so we welcomed the Poppin’ Shrimp the second the dish hit our simple wooden picnic table. Fresh as can be, large and succulent, with a crunchy exterior that worked superbly with the Fl!p spicy mayo dip, they disappeared in a flash.

Being big fans of fish and chips, it was inevitable we would put Fl!p’s to the test. While cod is not generally available, the dainty bite-sized pieces of seabass made an excellent substitute. The delicate fish retained its flavor in the super light, crispy batter, and the tartare sauce was as authentic as it comes. The fries were a hit as well, just the right size, served piping hot, and not greasy at all.

We had already heard how good the wraps were, so decided to try both. The combination of crisp lettuce, fresh avocado, and shrimp in the Shrimp Avocado Wrap was elevated by the tangy cocktail sauce, and the neat wrapping of the soft whole wheat tortilla bread made it easy to handle and bite into. A healthy option yes, but it certainly delivered on flavor and was quite filling.

The same went for the Smoked Salmon Wrap. The combination of smoked salmon, white cheese, lettuce, wasabi mayo and capers worked well, so give it a try! Both wraps came with a sizable portion of extremely good sweet potato fries, so even more reason to eat healthy.

Although we had really eaten rather well, our curiosity was piqued by the Fl!p Burger. Salmon teriyaki with avocado is a winning combo, and the simple addition of lettuce and a whole wheat bun allowed the flavors to shine. The Crispy Shrimp Burger was also a hit. Kids of all ages find it hard to resist shrimp tempura, and the light kick of the spicy mayo and sweet chili is a real crowd-pleaser.

We could have wound up with a soft serve ice-cream dessert, but chose to pass. Maybe next time.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages

Although Fl!p is really all about seafood, there are two beef options available, The Stuff’d Burger made with South African beef, stuffed mushroom, cheese and Fl!p sauce, and the Surf N’ Turf Burger, which combines beef with shrimp tempura and cheese.

Beverages include Soft drinks and Red Bull at present, but juices, smoothies and milkshakes are planned for the near future.

Décor & Ambiance

Situated overlooking the football pitch, Fl!p has a casual, laid back feel. There was quite a buzz of activity, even on a Sunday evening when we visited. Seating is comfortable yet simple, and the presentation is neat and attractive with obvious attention to detail.

Social Distancing & Hygiene Standards

Seating is open-air, and food is presented in neat hygienic containers. We noted that the chefs were wearing masks and gloves throughout our visit, and felt reassured that all precautions were being taken seriously.

Clientele Mix: Anybody and everybody. This is food that is family-friendly, albeit with a gourmet edge.

Price Range: Reasonable.

Worth Noting: Delivery is available in Palm Hills for larger orders, within a 10-minute radius in order to maintain the food quality.

Sedky Sakhr: Acting, Music and Animation

Right before the closing of Cairo International Film Festival, we caught up with Sedky Sakhr for a quick chat about his role in the new thriller series Ansaf Maganeen, now playing on Viu, the video streaming platform.

How does it feel to be a part of CIFF?

It feels great! I feel super proud. I always looked up to this festival, my father used to drag me when I was a kid to see all the movies. The film schedule used to be in El Kawakeb magazine, we would go and read about the movies and circle the ones we want to see and it was always a special and exciting time of the year.

Now, to be personally invited to this festival, I feel extremely proud and happy.

What do you think about this edition of CIFF?

I think it was an extremely challenging edition and the fact that they managed to have such powerful programming and curation in the middle of these hard times is amazing because this was a tough year for the cinema industry.

This year probably witnessed the least number of film productions historically. So, to manage to have such a strong curation is very hard and is a great achievement.

I’m very happy that they managed to do so and still have a very strong representation of the Egyptian cinema with many feature movies and short movies. All in all, it’s a powerful edition.

Have you seen any movies yet? Which would you recommend?

Yes, I’ve seen The Father, Gaza Mon Amour, Gagarine, Nomadland, which by the way just won the Venice award, and some of the short films as well. I’d recommend them all since they are all really very powerful, very special and highly acclaimed movies.

I missed a few, it’s hard to manage to see all the movies but you should go see them all really.

**Tell us a bit about Ansaf Maganeen? How is it playing a role in an Arabic psychological thriller series?**

I play Hazem who is the cousin of Asmaa Galal, and a heart donor. The story is about Anas who has some psychological issues. Anas just had a heart transplant and he starts hearing the donor. I don’t want to say much, I hope you watch and enjoy it!

Best role or project you’ve ever worked on?

This is a tough one. My role in Leh laa was one that I enjoyed very much because I related to the character and it was very close to me. It wasn’t hard portraying it and it was enjoyable living some situations with this character since he’s fun and bubbly, but wise and a bit of a feminist at the same time, I really loved this combination.

What’s your favorite film genre?

If I say romantic comedy would that be cheesy? No but seriously, it’s drama. It’s the genre that attracts me the most. Human relationships are always something very attractive to me.

How was it acting alongside Nelly Karim and Asser Yassin?

That was pure fun, Asser is loads of fun and we go way back, so it’s always fun to work with him; although, time-wise it was very stressful but the shooting wasn’t stressful at all.

What’s a day in the life of Sedky like?

It’s a very boring day, why do you want to know that? Ah well, I’ll tell you anyway. I wake up. I squeeze my celery to get some celery juice then I prepare my morning drink which is turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, lemon and honey. That’s like my coffee I don’t drink coffee in the morning because I try to lead a healthy life.

Then I start to contemplate what I’m going to do with my day, so as I contemplate I pick up the ukulele and I start playing and procrastinating then I find that the day is almost over and all I’ve done is play music but still it’s good practice. I try to do some sports and see my friends and that’s mostly it.

Would you ever consider going fully into music as a career?

Yes, I’m definitely considering music as a career. It’s always been something that I want to do professionally. I practice daily and I have some projects in my mind already. I already did some music for short films and a contemporary dance show, so it’s definitely in my plan, maybe acting has more priority right now but music is strongly on my radar.

What was your experience playing a character in an animation movie like?

That was amazing! It was the most liberating thing an actor can get to do because there are no cameras. It’s only your voice in a closed room in front of a microphone so you get to go completely crazy! It’s so much fun and it’s something I’d love to do more of.

What advice would you give young people who want to pursue acting?

Work on yourself, study, take acting workshops, and work on your skills other than acting, if you can be a gymnast, play music, sing, dance, these are all supportive skills. Also, grit and persistence, you have to keep trying because even if it takes a lot of time and luck if you just keep pursuing it for a long time you’ll eventually get there.

You also need to network and be out there a lot, so just keep going.

What’s your favorite book? Favorite film?

Love in the Exile by Bahaa Taher and In the Mood for Love by director Wong Kar-wai.

Any upcoming projects?

We’ve been extremely busy with Ansaf Maganeen so that’s coming up and I hope you’ve seen Sunday at 5 pm by Sherif Sherif El Bendary, it’s taking part in CIFF. Those were the last two projects I was working on and I’m super proud that they’re here in Cairo International Film Festival.

Coffee Berry: Coming from Greece with The Best Coffee

Coming straight from Greece with three branches in Cairo and one at Seashell North Coast, Coffee Berry has become the go-to spot for coffee and a cozy social hub. There they offer an extensive list of beverages with their special filtered coffee that comes in six types.

With 11 types of coffee, two house blends (premium and flavored) with decaf option, single-origin coffees, six types of teas, and unique syrups for add-ons, Coffee Berry has become one of the most reliable coffee house, and we had to try it.

Signature Beverages

Coffee Berry offers a wide selection of hot and cold beverages with a seasonal hero this year, the Santa’s Mocha with a nice flavor, and a generous layer of whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles. But if you know Coffee Berry, you know that means delicious filtered coffee that you cannot find anywhere else in town. Another signature drink would have to be the iced Berrycino Berry.

Dishes and Beverages Sampled

Cold weather requires a good cup of coffee and a light bite. We started our visit with Santa’s Mocha that had us warm inside with chocolate and coffee cooled off by the rich cream and sprinkles on top.

Then we proceeded with a turkey Panini in a soft bread filled with a generous piece of melting cheese and a light pink mayo sauce, perfect for lunch or a mid-day snack. We paired that up with a cappuccino with almond milk. If the cappuccino is done right, you know you are in a true coffee-house, and to top it off, they are one of the rare places around Egypt that offer a variety of milk substitutes with options like almond, soy, and oatmeal milk.

Then since nothing is better than coffee and cake, we tried a trio of their freshly baked cakes: carrot, Lotus, and Oreo, paired with their signature Berrycino Berry and Latte Freddo.

The Berrycino Berry was like a dessert in a cup, sweet, milky, and full of berries and whipped cream, while the Latte Freddo was a coffee-Licious dream with a strong kick that gives you an energetic boost of both rainy days and hot summer nights.

Other Menu Items that Appealed

Coffee Berry is known for its packs of nuts, chocolate, and granola bars that are made specifically for them. Besides the variety of exceptional coffee, they have a small juice station that does wonders.

At the juice station, they have fresh-pressed juices, smoothies, and refreshing granitas in a few flavors.

When it comes to the light bites, they serve baked goods like Semite, croissants, sandwiches and cakes, and salad bowls.

Décor & Ambiance

Coffee Berry is present around the city of Cairo with three branches. We have visited the New Cairo branch in O1 Mall, with both an indoor and an outdoor area that turned into a social hub for students and young professionals who enjoy a nice cup of coffee, a friendly environment, and comfortable chairs to turn into their small working space.

The ambiance is inviting, the beverages are overflowing, and the staff is very knowledgeable.

They are expanding on their cold brew line and soon will be selling the tools along with the coffee packs and beans so you can make the Coffee Berry creations at home!
