Diwan: Summer Beach Reading to Go Great With Your Tan

Diwan Bookstore knows how to make our summer a bit cooler with their summer book recommendations to read on hot days. Here are 5 books about motherhood, global warming, the secret, and more.

1. The Push

By Audrain Ashley

A tense, page-turning psychological drama about the making and breaking of a family – and a woman whose experience of motherhood is nothing at all what she hoped for – and everything she feared.

Blythe Connor is a woman who is trying desperately to be the perfect mother that everyone else seems to be, but she’s struggling. Soon, she begins to wonder if there’s something genuinely wrong with her daughter, Violet, though her husband insists it isn’t true.

As the story unfolds in this gripping and suspenseful domestic drama, Audrain explores motherhood, the limits of unconditional love, and how the consequences of our actions can travel across generations.

2. How to Avoid a Climate Disaster

By Bill Gates

In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical – and accessible plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe.

Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet’s slide toward certain environmental disaster.

In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal.

3. The Greatest Secret

By Rhonda Byrne

Bestselling author Rhonda Byrne launched a global phenomenon with the publication of The Secret in 2006. This life-altering work helped readers understand the untapped powers that reside within.

The Greatest Secret is a quantum leap that will take the reader beyond the material world and into the spiritual realm, where all possibilities exist. The teachings in these pages offer accessible practices that can be put to use immediately and profound revelations that will dissolve fears and uncertainty, anxiety and pain.

4. Shuggie Bain

By Douglas Stuart

Shuggie Bain is the unforgettable story of young Hugh “Shuggie” Bain, a sweet and lonely boy who spends his 1980s childhood in run-down public housing in Glasgow, Scotland. Thatcher’s policies have put husbands and sons out of work, and the city’s notorious drug epidemic is waiting in the wings.

5. The Soul of a Woman

By Isabel Allende

“When I say that I was a feminist in kindergarten, I am not exaggerating,” begins Isabel Allende. As a child, she watched her mother, abandoned by her husband, provide for her three small children without “resources or voice.” Isabel became a fierce and defiant little girl, determined to fight for the life her mother couldn’t have.

As a young woman coming of age in the late 1960s, she rode the second wave of feminism. Among a tribe of like-minded female journalists, Allende for the first time felt comfortable in her own skin, as they wrote “with a knife between our teeth” about women’s issues.

She has seen what the movement has accomplished in the course of her lifetime. And over the course of three passionate marriages, she has learned how to grow as a woman while having a partner, when to step away, and the rewards of embracing one’s sexuality.

Ahmed Aboul Gheit on Egypt’s Foreign Policy

Ahmed Aboul Gheit, secretary-general of the Arab League, former ambassador, and former Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, is the author of a two-volume memoir, Egypt’s Foreign Policy in Times of Crisis: My Testimony (AUC Press, 2020) and Witness to War and Peace: Egypt, the October War, and Beyond (AUC Press, 2018).

Aboul Gheit took the time to reflect on his past career gave us a glimpse into its inner workings, from the 1973 war to 9/11. He shared with us significant milestones as well as insight into Egyptian foreign policy.

Describe to us an unforgettable moment from your illustrious career and the circumstances around it?

To be honest there were multiple milestones and events that I consider truly significant during my decades of service to Egypt. Perhaps the most important was on the 6th of October in 1973, the day President Sadat took Egypt to war to reclaim the Sinai and restore Egypt’s military honor. I delve extensively into my experiences on that day in my first memoir. They will remain forever ingrained in my memory. But there were of course other defining moments or events of major significance, such as the 9/11 attacks in the United States, when I was serving as Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, and I quickly realized the immensity of the challenges that would await us in addressing this event and its regional and global ramifications.

You once said that there are many foreign diplomats, writers, and journalists “who do not know how Egyptian foreign policy is planned, conducted, how operations are done, and how we coordinate action.” Could one say there are characteristics specific to Egypt’s foreign policy?

Egypt has been, and will always remain, a pivotal state in its region. It has also always been a state with a strong leadership, and with strong institutions that serve its foreign policy objectives.

It is always easy for an outsider to judge the foreign policy decisions of any government, but this judgment is neither fully fair nor accurate since the outsider is never privy to the decision-making process itself or to the factors that lead to the formulation of any policy.

But I think it is fair to say that Egypt’s foreign policy has always been characterized as principled, balanced, and steadfast and firmly grounded in serving the wider immediate and long-term national interests of the state and its people.

Does Egypt’s strategic geography dictate much of the country’s foreign policy?

Geography has always been a determinant factor in defining Egypt’s foreign policy throughout its history. These are factors that no country can escape, and they have offered Egypt countless opportunities as well as successive challenges.

They have led Egypt to assume its leadership role in the Arab world and region at large, made Africa, and in particular the countries of the Nile river basin, a priority focus for any Egyptian government, and compelled Egypt to serve as a bridge between its region and Europe. But Egypt is a large and important country, and its foreign policy is defined by interests and objectives that most certainly transcend its geography and span beyond its region.

What was it really like to be such a close witness and a direct player in the making of history of the Middle East during such critical years?

It was, first and foremost, the highest honor to serve my country, and be intricately involved in safeguarding its interests and promoting its objectives. The Middle East has always been a region of strategic importance and to be engaged in formulating and then implementing the foreign policy of Egypt—as the largest actor in the region—vis-à-vis the Middle East was both an immense responsibility and an equally fulfilling achievement.

Summer Chicken Salad By Nour El Ganzoury at EAT-ducate

Summer Chicken Salad

Nothing says summer like a refreshing salad, and this winner comes with chickpeas and a citrus tahini dressing. Packed with nutrients, this high-protein, anti-inflammatory dish is filling enough to sustain you through an active day, but light on carbs.

The spicy, sweet and tangy dressing delivers a zesty punch that complements the warm vegetables to a ‘t’, with a contrast between the creamy smoothness of the tahini, the sharp citrus of the lime and the hit of chili as a palate teaser. Plate it up in your favorite bowl, it is a colorful crowd-pleaser that is sure to become a favorite.

By Nour El Ganzoury at EAT-ducate

Ingredients:

  • 500g chicken thighs
  • 70g chickpeas
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 large carrot
  • Arugula
  • Lettuce
  • 3 limes
  • 1 tablespoon tahini
  • 2 tablespoons onion powder
  • 2 small chili peppers (adjust to spiciness)
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Preparation:

  1. Marinate chicken in yogurt, 1 teaspoon onion powder and salt and pepper.
  2. Drain and rinse the soaked chickpeas and add to a pot. Cover with a few inches of water, and add ½ a teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover, and simmer until tender, about 90 minutes to 2 hours. Heat 2 teaspoons of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions, peppers, carrots, salt and pepper.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low and cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are caramelized and the peppers and carrots are tender and slightly browned, which should take around 15 to 20 minutes. If a brown coating forms on the bottom of the pan during the cooking process, add a few tablespoons of water and stir; repeat as necessary.
  4. Put aside and use the same skillet to cook the chicken. Preheat the skillet over medium heat. Add the marinated chicken to the skillet and let cook 4-5 minutes, without touching the chicken.
  5. After 4-5 minutes, move the chicken around frequently with a spatula until all sides are browned and the chicken is cooked.

*Use up those browned bits stuck to the pan for a pan sauce! That’s right, that golden brown stuff stuck on the pan afterward creates an incredibly flavorful sauce when you add a splash of water.

The dressing:

  1. Mix tahini, lime, 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon each of olive oil and honey. Add chili flakes, salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Place chopped lettuce and arugula in a large salad bowl, then add vegetables and chickpeas.
  3. Slice the cooked chicken thighs and add also to the salad bowl.
  4. Drizzle with dressing.

Tips:

*Soak chickpeas in water overnight if you are not going to use canned.

*Marinate the chicken for 2 hours if possible. If you don’t have time, 15 minutes will also do.

Tabibi: COVID-19 Vaccines: Myth vs. Fact

COVID-19 Vaccines

The Egyptian government has planned to vaccinate 40 million people, and as of June 1st, 2021, a total of 2,698,411 vaccine doses have been administered. The main vaccines currently available in Egypt are Sinopharm and AstraZeneca/Oxford, both of which are authorized by the WHO for emergency use. COVID-19 Vaccines

The Sinopharm vaccine is made from inactivated Coronavirus that cannot replicate or cause an infection but can only teach the immune system to make antibodies against the virus.

The AstraZeneca vaccine contains the gene for the coronavirus spike protein contained in a harmless virus that can’t replicate or cause an infection but only delivers the coronavirus genetic material that will teach the immune system to make antibodies against the virus spike protein.

Effectiveness

According to WHO, the Sinopharm vaccine efficacy results showed that the vaccine prevented symptomatic disease and hospitalization in 79% of those vaccinated, while AstraZeneca saw an efficacy of 80% against symptomatic COVID-19 infection.

Both vaccines are highly effective in preventing severe COVID-19, hospitalization and death due to COVID19. COVID-19 Vaccines

Common Side Effects

Mild to moderate vaccine side effects are normal.  Typical side effects include pain at the injection site, fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, chills and diarrhea.

Red Flags

If you have any of the following symptoms after vaccination, you should consult a doctor:

  • Breathlessness
  • Chest or stomach pain
  • Swelling or coldness in the leg
  • A severe or worsening headache (particularly 3 or more days after the vaccine)
  • Blurred vision
  • Many small bruises, reddish or purplish spots, persistent bleeding or blood blisters under the skin.
Myths and Facts

Myth: The vaccines can cause infertility

Fact: There is no vaccine that can cause infertility. This was due to a rumor that the virus spike protein looks like a protein in the placenta and thus the vaccine will make antibodies that can attack the placental protein and cause infertility. The truth is that the two spike proteins are completely different and receiving the COVID-19 vaccine will have no effect on women’s fertility. COVID-19 Vaccines

Myth: Some vaccines can change our genetic material

Fact: The vaccines are either the inactivated virus or they induce our cells to make the viral protein, and this by no means affects our DNA.

Myth: I don’t need a vaccine if I’ve already had a COVID-19 infection.

Fact: People who have already been infected with COVID-19 may still benefit from vaccination. Therefore, previously infected people are encouraged to get the vaccine due to the serious health hazards connected with COVID-19 and the possibility of re-infection.

Myth: I don’t need the vaccine because I’m not at risk for severe COVID-19 consequences. COVID-19 Vaccines

Fact: Aside from your own risk you can transfer it to others at higher risk, so it’s critical to get vaccinated. It is not just for your own safety, but also for the safety of your family and community.

Myth: Because vaccines developed so rapidly, the COVID-19 vaccines are risky.

Fact: Licensed vaccines are proven safe, effective and they meet all safety requirements. There were no steps in the trials that were bypassed. However, because of unprecedented global collaboration and investment, the vaccines were developed in a shorter period of time.

Myth: COVID-19 vaccines can give you COVID-19 infection

Fact: The COVID-19 vaccines are either the inactivated virus or part of the virus that triggers our bodies to make antibodies against the virus. Thus they cannot replicate in your body and cannot infect you with the virus.

NAF: What’s Brewing in Arkan Plaza?

NAF

Coffee is something that we take very seriously. It sustains us through long workdays, revives us when we need a boost, and relaxes us when weekends roll around. So, it goes without saying, we treat it with reverence and the utmost respect.

A visit to NAF in Arkan Plaza was an opportunity to sample a couple of the brews available, and also to learn more firsthand from owner Ahmed Hussam Nafee about the science behind making a perfect cup.

His journey to Italy some 18 years ago to secure the distributor license for leading brand Lavazza was spurred by the lack of authentic freshly roasted and ground coffee in the market. Thanks to his passion and determination, we now have a superb range of exceptional coffees of single original and delicately balanced Lavazza blends to meet our cravings.

What is offered: Coffee, at its best, with a well-curated selection of sandwiches, croissants, salads and decadent cakes. (Word has it that the chocolate cake is to die for.)

What We Sampled

This was serious business. Forget about our usual lashings of frothy milk or heaps of sugar (this time around, at least). We wanted to let the coffee sing with its layers of flavors and special notes. So, sipping delicately, our first espresso of choice was a Brazilian single origin.

Being morning, we were craving a brew with depth and enough punch to kick-start our day. And the robust bursts of the Brasile Tierra blend did just that. Selected Arabica beans from three different Brazilian locales, each with their own distinct characteristics, resulted in smooth notes of dark chocolate, sugar cane and hazelnuts.

Enjoyable straight up, we could also envision it as a base for our more indulgent milky choices, and were sure that the flavors would still shine through. Munching on a buttery croissant, we couldn’t resist a little extra caffeine in the form of the house signature Nafee Turkish coffee, served in a simple dainty glass mug to allow us to enjoy the natural layering of the brew as we sipped. Fueled up for the day, we had to stop there.

Other Options Available

The full selection would take some serious exploration, but we will definitely be back to sample some of the single-origin coffees, as well as the aromatic Tierra Selection and lighter Tierra Colombia blends. And a couple of cold slow-drip brews as well, to go.

We wouldn’t forgo trying the tempting, creative salads and generous sandwiches. You can’t beat the appeal of fresh home-baked bread, can you?

Beverages: Apart from the huge range of frappes and innovative hot coffees, NAF offers tea and fresh juices.

Décor and Ambiance

Chic and understated, with an impressive state-of-the-art roasting machine, titanium-bladed grinding equipment and coffee-making tools. Grey, beige, natural wood and coarse linen fabric dominate, bringing a subtle coziness to the ambiance. We also loved the addition of the chair neatly upholstered in coffee bean sacking, it added a quirky and personal touch.

Nicely positioned in one of the best spots in Arkan, with open views over a spacious flowery terrace, NAF enjoys a gentle, relaxing breeze throughout its outdoor seating area. The interior seating is equally as pleasant, with well-spaced seating and spotless tables bearing hand sanitizer.

Social distancing and hygiene standards: Impressive. We felt totally at ease and staff seemed very aware of the protocols in place.

Worth Knowing

NAF delivers packaged ground coffee to locations within Sheikh Zayed and 6th Oct, an increasing popular option as customers are starting to want an elevated coffee experience at home as well. Welcome to the world of Chemex, V60 and Aeropress!

NAF will also happily arrange for curbside pickup of your morning coffee outside Arkan Plaza, starting from 6 am. Now, that is what we call service!

Another Hot Tip

Coffee addicts and newbies can attend special courses at NAF to learn more about the roasting and grinding techniques and processes, the cultivation and history of coffee around the globe, the art of blending, as well as sampling the blends through ‘cupping’.

Clientele mix: Urban professionals, media and cinema personalities, a sophisticated crowd who knows what it likes, and where to find it.

Price range: Moderate.
