Art Feb 2017

Arttalks

Exhibition: Raas Baladi M’aa Asal Eswed

Artist :  Mohamed Taman

Address:  8 El Kamel Mohamed St.,

Zamalek

When: 17th January – 10th  February, 2017

Details: Raas Baladi M’aa Asal Eswed literally means ‘Belly Dancing with Black Honey›. A pun on popular Arabic expressions, very colloquial Egyptian-Arabic in fact, the exhibition, as much as the unique painting technique, challenges first impressions and calls on the viewer to question what he/she sees, hears, and reads.

Gypsum gallery

Exhibition: Dawn Portraits

Artist: Huda Lutfi

Address: 8 El Kamel Mohamed St.,

Zamalek

When: 12th January – 6th  February, 2017

Details: To show “Dawn Portraits”, a solo exhibition by artist and cultural

historian Huda Lutfi. Lutfi is renowned for her meticulously crafted and politically charged

collages, assemblages and installations incorporating found material that she hunts for in the flea markets, bookstores and workshops of Downtown Cairo where she lives and works. Alongside her compelling visual chronicles of Cairo and its loaded history, Lutfi has continued to paint a steady stream of personal, expressive portraits of women.

AL MASAR GALLERY

Exhibition: Inner Dialogue

Artist: Hazem Taha Hussein

Address:  8 El Kamel Mohamed St.,

Zamalek

When: 7th February – 2nd  March, 2017

Details: Shut off from my surroundings – an inner dialogue that is exactly how I feel and hence, what I express, in this exhibition. I do not need to document the events unfolding in the world today, or in my life. The use of the language of abstraction and semi-abstraction emerges from an inner need to form visually my own virtual world. In this world, I am free to criticize, shout or reject without feeling the need to justify myself. For now, it is simply my way of communication.

safarkhan

Exhibition: Moulid Ya Donia

Artist: Zakaria El Zeini

Address: 6, Brazil St., Zamalek

When: 13th February – 10th  March, 2017

Details: Safarkhan has the utmost pleasure to introduce to you the talented and internationally esteemed artist Zakaria El Zeini (1932-1993), who has successfully imprinted his unique and tasteful stamp on the modern Egyptian art scene. El Zeini was raised in suburban Cairo before graduating from the Faculty of Fine Arts, he then explored his innate love for painting in one of the art capitals of the world at the Pravana Academy in Venice, Italy. El Zeini would then return to his homeland and at the Faculty of Fine Arts, this time as a distinguished professor. His works exhibit a versatile and highly talented artistic portfolio, the ability to switch styles based on his particular experiences at the time which gives this exhibition a highly varied and differentiated feel. As one explores each piece in succession, his skill in portraying and conveying multiple topics and themes through noticeably distinctive techniques, which is often a rarity in conventional exhibitions, is apparent. After his death in 1993, he has since been recognized as one of the greatest Egyptian and Arab artists of his generation.

Tavolino

Tavolino is an Italian Restaurant and Bar Zamalek. The Tavolino menu states, “Italian cuisine is free-spirited, flavorful and compelling!”. A mixture of classic and modern Italian culinary culture, Tavolino serves Italian food for all tastes, ranging from their great selection of pastas and risotto to their luxury beef and seafood.

Mantra: Modern culinary concepts, to classics.

Décor: Tavolino is located on a busy street, but once you enter, it charms you away from the hustle and bustle. Its rustic yet tasteful décor adds to the simplicity, and the mirror-like walls lend an air of sophistication to the atmosphere. The music adds to the warmth, helping create a magical and relaxing place to dine!

Dishes sampled: Il Taguere Delle Bruschette VV, a fine starter of grilled bread topped with tomatoes marinated in extra virgin olive oil and rucola, served with a side of mozzarella cheese. The bread was brushed with oil, leaving an undeniably mouth-watering taste behind. For the main dish we chose the chef’s favorite Beef Tenderloin with our choice of mushroom sauce and grilled vegetables; the dish was garnished with sides of crisp mushroom mixed with onion jam; the beef was tender and juicy. Our next choice was Tavolino’s favorite seafood dish; the sizzling Grigliata Di Pesce, a dish of fresh calamari, sea bream fillet and jumbo shrimp grilled on charcoal, served again with our favorite grilled vegetables. This dish is a seafood lover’s dream!

To satisfy our sweet tooth, we went for the famous Italian dessert, Panna Cotta. The taste exceeded our expectations, it was creamy yet soft, drizzled with berry compote of our choice. It is a perfect dessert for a Valentine’s dinner, as the presentation of the dish alone is heavenly. Chef Ahmed Saeed also prepared his favorite dessert, the dark chocolate dream: Chocolate Crosata, a freshly-made fantasy. The dishes tried were all outstanding in both taste and presentation.

Other dishes that appealed: Since the seafood was to die for, we’re eager to also try the seafood risotto – Risotto Alla Pescatora, with shrimp, calamari, mussels, and crab.

Top Tip: Tavolino boasts a wide variety of vegan and vegetarian food, which fits well with the diverse atmosphere and menu, and the grilled veggies are “wholesome of awesome”.

Clientele mix: Locals, ex-pats, couples, and friends. Perfect for anyone who appreciates culinary art.

Beverages: A good selection of wines and alcoholic cocktails; fresh juices, tea, coffee and soft drinks. Every Sunday, Monday and Tuesday there is a happy hour from 6 to 8 – on every glass of wine you have a free one .

Price Range: Reasonable

Worth noting: Tavolino is ready for catering!

Opening hours: 11am-3am

Address: 5 Abo El Feda Street, Zamalek
