The Importance of a Father’s Presence

By Noha Abu Sitta

For decades, the traditional role of the father was provider and disciplinarian; the figure who demanded respect and obedience from his children. Fathers weren’t expected to help in the nurturing or caretaking of their children, nor were they actively involved in their life. It was considered solely the mother’s responsibility to nurture and raise the children. Psychologists and other researchers assumed that the mother-child bond was the most important one in a child’s life. Thus, mothers often got the credit or blame on how well children were doing.

Fatherhood today has become about the degree of the father’s involvement within the family. A societal view of the father’s role began to change in the 20th century due to various factors, including:

1) An increase in living expenses caused mothers to become active contributors to the household income, and burgeoning feminist movements saw women entering the professional work force on a full-time basis.

2) New psychological research proved the importance of the father’s role in children’s lives.

3) The increase in the number of divorced families led fathers to take a more active part in children’s lives.

4) Remoteness of extended families that traditionally took part in the rearing of children.

5) The emergence of “the stay-at-home dad”.

 Why Fathers Matter

New research shows that children who receive love and attention from their fathers are less likely to struggle with behavioral problems later on in life. Children who feel loved by both parents are more likely to become less hostile or emotionally unstable.

Psychologist Erik Erikson believed that a father’s love and a mother’s love are qualitatively different. Both fathers and mothers have a distinctive style of interaction with children. Parents fall into the misconception that both parenting styles should be a replica, or else the child will be left confused and insecure. Some research has claimed that this diversity provides children with a broader experience of more or less contrasting relational interactions.

Different, but Complementary

Fathers and mothers have unique and complementary non-identical roles in their children’s lives. They vary in the way they communicate, play, and discipline their children. Studies have shown that if the child’s father is affectionate, supportive and involved, this highly contributes to the child’s social, emotional, and academic development, as well as providing a greater sense of authenticity, self-esteem, and confidence. All this helps children build more eagerness in exploring the world around them and dealing with the constant changes in life, while feeling safe and secure.

Good Cop, Bad Cop

Dad becomes the fun parent who comes and goes, while mom becomes the tough disciplinarian who is responsible for the kids’ day-to-day. This can lead to mom criticizing the father for not doing his job as a disciplinary figure and forcing her to take on the role of bad cop.

Unfortunately, some mothers may go to the extent of complaining about the children’s behavior to the father, which could lead him to get angry and become firm with the kids. It is true that usually mothers discipline more often, yet when fathers do, it is usually in a firmer way. Again it should be clear to both parents that they complement, not mirror one another.

Roughhousing is Important

A few mothers may interfere in the way fathers play with their children, especially when the sort of play includes roughhousing, thinking that this puts the child in danger or makes him more aggressive. Mothers need to know that fathers’ rough play is needed by their children as it helps a lot with their emotional development.

According to a few theories, this style of physical interaction is characterized by excitement and unpredictability, thus teaching children how to deal with aggressive impulses without losing control of their emotions and how to know when is the right time to stop. It is more common that mothers would tend to worry about their children’s safety, while fathers would encourage them to take risks. Nevertheless, it is not always the case since some fathers tend to be more anxious about their children than their mothers, but at the end of the day, we need to create that balance.

Fathers must Father

Fathers might also back off sometimes when they are burdened with too many financial responsibilities beyond their capacity. This is when they might refuse taking on more responsibilities at home. Needless to say, by doing this they are ignoring one of their main responsibilities.

The Present of Presence

A father’s engagement can really make a difference in the child’s life, whether they are married, single, divorced, adoptive, or a step-father. Fathers are central to the emotional well-being of their children and the biggest present they can give to their children is their presence.

4 Reasons Why Fathers May Be Uninvolved

  • Some fathers decide that their sole responsibility towards their children is a financial one. Often fathers are driven to do so to avoid any unnecessary confrontations with the mothers, which usually include blame, shame or criticism – either consciously or subconsciously.
  • The mother acts as the parenting police. By commenting on or directing the father how to talk to the kids, claiming that she is the expert in the house, this could lead to threatening the father’s self-esteem – especially if it happens in front of the kids. In most cases, the father would then refuse to be controlled by the mother and would either do it his way, but behind her back, or become more stubborn and fight back for his right to parent his children the way he sees it fit. He could also completely back off and refuse to be held responsible for anything related to the kids other than his financial duties.
  • They doubt their own capabilities as a parent. This usually happens when the father himself lacked a proper parenting experience in his own childhood, whether it was related to an unfortunate incident such as the death of a parent, a divorce that wasn’t dealt with correctly, or having had an abusive parent(s).
  • A father’s lack of knowledge in this field causes self-doubt. Fathers need to know that having children is a choice they’ve made and are responsible for, thus if they don’t know how to deal with it, it is their responsibility to learn how.

7 Ways Fathers Can Be More Involved

  • Big outings and trips definitely contribute to the father-child relationship, but so does any involvement in the child’s daily activities, such as: eating dinner together, watching TV together, playing a football match or video games together.
  • Fathers can simply ask their children about what they’ve learned at school or in their sports practice. They could talk about an article or an interesting book they’ve read or a video they’ve watched.
  • Learning a new skill together is so exciting for both fathers and children, letting their children teach them something they know, sharing experiences, or funny stories from their childhood.
  • Camping (could be done by simply setting up a tent in the reception area at home and sleeping in it for a night).
  • Washing the car together.
  • Browsing through old photo albums, or bringing out the tools and exploring the insides of old unused electrical equipment can all create everlasting memories and a very strong bond between fathers and their children.
  • Attending events that are of special importance to their children, like sports practice, a school play, or a first/last day at school every school year. Quality time is important and very important for children.

El Rawi in Sheraton Cairo

Enjoy fine dining & sophistication while taking in sparkling Nile views at this world-class restaurant in Sheraton Cairo. We paid an evening visit to this place which could easily be considerd one of the best restaurants in Cairo, and give you all the details in our comprehensive review.

Type of cuisine: High-end refined cuisine that delivers and doesn’t beat around the bush. A concise menu offering select items, so you know each one is diligently made.

Signature dishes: Grilled Lobster, Pumpkin Lamb, Orange Tart

Dishes sampled: This menu was exactly what you want to see on date night, as this particular night was: clear, concise, diverse, and yet, not all-over the place or overwhelming. El Rawi chose a selection of dishes and focuses its efforts on doing them really, really well. So, we began what promised to be a special night with a Goat Cheese Wheel: a salad platter divided into three sections. One section had perfectly al dente grilled vegetables with a basil pesto emulsion, seasoned just right, letting the smoky flavor shine through. Another section had four good-sized Chêvre wheels, and the third had the freshest greens, crisp and bright, lettuce, fennel and more. A light start to the meal.

The mains included Imported Beef Tenderloin accompanied by a new take on a potato side. The grilled beef fillet steak rested on a bed of sautéed sliced potatoes that had a crunchy exterior and caramelized onion, served with green peppercorn sauce and seasonal vegetables. Ordered medium-well, this tenderloin was prepared by a master of meats! If you looked up ‘medium-well’ in the dictionary, an image of this dish would come up. A truly great cut and a more than satisfactory dish! The other main was Mix Grill from the Sea – sea bass, queen prawns, sardines, Hamour and red mullet fillet marinated and grilled, served with lemon and garlic butter, grilled vegetables and steamed parsley with mint potatoes. This dish hit all the right spots, combining a citrusy sauce, smoky grill flavor, and fresh fish – a fantastic dish, and quite filling! Chapeau to the chef!

For dessert, we shared an Orange Tart. An exquisite pastry topped with a caramelized lavender Italian meringue, crème anglaise and a red fruit coulis. Divine.

Other menu options that appealed: Everything! But if we had to narrow it down we’d say definitely the Grilled Lobster, the Fillet Steak sandwich, Beef Lasagna, the Avocado Salmon Salad, and the Homemade Savarin.

Décor: El Rawi is quite spacious and can accommodate a large crowd without getting over-crowded, and your table will still feel private and intimate. The décor is elegant, classy, contemporary, and chic. With light fixtures and high-tables that oh-so-subtly change color, and regular seating in neutral colors. A three-sided open kitchen allows you to view the chefs at work, or get up close to select your fresh meat or fish for the grill. Floor to ceiling glass panes along two sides of the restaurant give an even more expansive feel with Nile views and night-time Cairo lights providing a perfect backdrop to your evening. The restaurant extends into the Spotlight Bar, where live music provides great accompaniment to the delectable dishes. During our evening visit, the velvety, sultry vocals of singer Nancy Cassis provided covers of old and new jazz favorites, and contemporary tunes rearranged in a jazzy manner in both Arabic and English. Spotlight Bar turns into a hot nightspot, with several seating options available including the bar, high tables, low tables, couches, and a VIP area.

Ambience: A much needed break from reality, leave your life at the door, and enjoy an evening of indulgence. The staff can be described two words: gracious and classy. Harking back to an era of a thriving tourism industry when customer service personnel were known to be welcoming, warm, smiling, polite, accommodating and truly gracious. Fitting for a sophisticated yet non-intimidating restaurant such as El Rawi. The atmosphere is refined and elegant, yet accessible.

Beverages available: An extensive drinks menu includes very creative house cocktails and shots, aperitifs, spirits, liqueurs, beer, mocktails, fresh juices, hot drinks, and soft drinks. Apparently the mixologist is a big name in the business, with several 5-star hotels vying for his skills!

Clientele mix: Hotel guests, business types, couples, groups of 30 somethings…

Price range: While on the high end of the price scale, El Rawi was actually more affordable than some of the fine-dining venues recently opened in the city and in the suburbs. You get more than what you are paying for, not just great food, but impeccable service, a great ambience, and Nile views.

Holistic Wellness and Beauty at Bienêtre Institute

Drawn to exploring its only organic and chemical-free products and services, we paid a visit to Bienêtre Institute – the first specialized wellness and medical spa in Egypt. We were pleased to discover that the institute operates with a “body, mind and soul” approach at the epicenter of its ethos, offering psychiatry, physiotherapy, nutrition, and health coaching among their services.

With experts in the various fields of wellbeing, from holistic health therapists, to medical doctors to beauty practitioners, Bienêtre’s belief in the principle of physical and mental health being linked is clear in every detail of the operation. From the delicate aromatherapy scents wafting through the air, to the soft and relaxing music playing throughout the center. Each beauty or wellness service is carried out in the exclusivity of your own room, curating an experience that cannot be reached in any average salon or spa.

Upon arrival at the institute, we were greeted by professional reception staff who led us to our massage room. The relaxing ambient space was filled with a pleasant aroma and calming music, with a uniformed and friendly technician who began by asking how firm we wanted our Swedish massage. Each limb, finger, and toe was properly stretched and massaged with warm oil. The stomach massage felt sensational, and the technician informed us how beneficial it is for organ health and digestive health.

Feeling extremely relaxed and floating on air, we headed to our next service at the holistic nail spa. In keeping with their mantra, all nail services at Bienêtre use purely natural products, keeping nails as healthy as possible with minimal harmful ingredients. The foot sink featured lovely floating petals and glass stones, the kind of aesthetic touches that make you feel pampered. Unlike other nail salon experiences, the nail technician had a very light touch and the whole session passed with zero pain. Feet and hands are enveloped in a hot towel after each scrubbing, manicuring, and moisturizing which is a nice touch. Many organic nail products are also available for purchase for at-home maintenance.

We ended our visit with a special treat, getting a hair consultation and hair styling in Egypt’s first branch of Elite Hair International – an exclusive Bienêtre partner. We had a hair consultation with expert Julian Plessis who offered tips on how to manage unnecessary hair loss and how to maintain hair health from heat damage, demonstrating a range of exclusive products on sale in the salon. A high-quality synthetic hair piece was also tested out, for those who struggle with thin hair or need some extra volume with minimal effort. Very easy to use, simply clip in and you have Angelina Jolie va-va-voom kind of hair! After ending the consultation, our hair was cleansed with a delicious peppermint scalp cleansing shampoo and then blow-dried to perfection within minutes – all in the privacy of our own room, a rare treat for those who don’t like the hustle and bustle of a busy salon.

Bienêtre Institute certainly offers a sort of exclusivity and privacy that is not provided elsewhere, and the attention to the holistic harmony of body and mind is refreshing as mental health is often stigmatized. We will definitely be back in the near future to sample their wellness treatments like Reiki, Aromatherapy, Energy Healing, and Acupuncture … and many more Swedish massages!
