Ramadan at Battaw in Heliopolis

This popular oriental restaurant in Heliopolis has a very special Ramadan menu up its sleeve so pop it on your list of places to enjoy iftar this month.

Special Ramadan Menu

Soup Lisan Asfour, Sambusak Cheese, Pumpkin Kobeba, Chicken Livers, Sujouk (oriental sausages), Battaw Mixed Grill, Cheese Kunefa, Warm Basbousa with Vanilla ice cream.

Dishes Sampled

We started our meal by having the Lisan Asfour Soup, served steaming hot, rich and flavorful broth with shredded chicken chunks. Following our soup we were served a basket of freshly baked, straight-from-the-oven, puffed up baladi bread. Our starters consisted of Cheese Sambusak – filo pastry triangles filled with a mix of feta and akkawi cheese – sprinkled with Nigella seeds; Pumpkin Kobeba – a delightful and creative version of the original Kebbeh, this time made with pumpkin dough filled with spinach, chickpeas and pine nuts – a much lighter, healthier and vegetarian version. It is served with a side of yogurt dip. The Sujouk – oriental sausages – were nicely presented in a bronze pan, the meat sausages were delicious and relatively mildly spicy served with the house special pink sauce dip. The Chicken Liver was taken a notch up as it was served with herbed butter that melted just right into the liver juice. It was mouthwatering and we kept dipping the bread into the sauce. The main dish made quite an impression – Battaw Mixed Grill – served on a round tray was a treat for the eyes and mouth. Layered flat bread topped with a selection of the restaurant’s top grilled dishes. We savored a veal kebab, half a grilled chicken, shish taouk, kofta and hawawshi. The dish was beautifully ornamented with charcoal grilled tomatoes and chili peppers, garnished with delicious golden crusted potato wedges and served with 3 different dips: tomeya, pink sauce and tahini. Definitely a dish to share with a group of friends. Special mention must go to the tenderness of the Veal kebab. Overall there was flavor in every bite. We finalized our Ramadan menu tasting with two most classic feast desserts: Cheese Kunefa and Warm Basbusa served with a scoop of ice cream. Needless to say, Battaw has put an incredible effort to serve a complete menu full of flavor from starters to desserts.

Other Menu Options that Appealed

We would like to come back for their oriental breakfast option of foul, eggs and taameya and the Fetteer Meshaltet (served with molasses and fresh cream).

Décor

Once you enter through Battaw’s blue doors you immediately feel the oriental atmosphere. Modern yet nostalgic, the restaurant interior is a mix of blue and white tiles drawn into geometric figures, arabesque carved wooden partitions, beautiful painted panels and a white washed brick wall with an open kitchen view. Sets of brass carved lighting fixtures add more character to the place. Ambient background music is relaxing and there is a TV screen available on one of the walls.

Clientele Mix & Price Range

In the Stars: Your May Horoscopes

May waltzes in on a lively note, with some high-energy aspects keeping us all on our toes. Aries and Capricorn could be two signs to give a wide berth to for a day or two though, around the 7th. Arguments are possible. With Venus and Neptune squaring off from Gemini and Pisces in the same period, romantic complications are possible if you are not being transparent.  The 15th and 16th of May usher in a change of pace that might be remembered for days, weeks or months to come. Uranus, the independent, freedom-loving maverick of the solar system, enters Taurus, the sign that cherishes stability. Ouch! The 16th sees Mars enter the Uranus-ruled sign Aquarius, adding fuel to the fire. Read your birth sign to see how it might play out for you.

P.S. Don’t forget, your rising sign plays a big role, so check that out as well if you know it.

Happy birthday,

Taurus!

The big news for this month is Uranus entering your birth sign. Secretly, you enjoy the predictable, so having change thrust upon you doesn’t go down very well. This will have the greatest impact on people born in the first few days of this sign, but don’t fret. New angles can be positive, it’s better than getting stuck in a rut. Key dates for you are around the 15th and 16th. You don’t lose your temper quickly as a rule, but things may push you to boiling point. Think twice before letting loose, the damage may be hard to undo.

Pisces

You may wonder what all the fuss is about; life from your point of view should be running along rather nicely. Well, at least by Pisces standards… It’s fortunate that you are in a better position than most to benefit from the major planetary moves going on. Just take care around the 15th and 16th, especially when using equipment or on the road. That Mars square Uranus energy is out there for everyone to feel. Tempers run high, the stubborn side comes out in many people, and confrontations should be avoided wherever possible.

Aries

You are quick off the mark when it comes to stating your opinions, but your motto this month should be to think twice before pressing send or mouthing off. Mid-month has some powerful aspects that will impact the general mood, but specifically may ring in a change in your finances. A friend may need bailing out, or a hobby or community project could cost more than you had budgeted for. Now that Uranus has moved from your sign you should be able to review the positive changes that you have made, willingly or unwillingly.

Cancer

There’s a whole bundle of challenging energy going on in your Solar 7th house of relationships and partnerships. That also includes people you are in direct conflict with, take note. It’s time to take stock. Is someone draining your energy or making what you feel are unfair demands upon you? Is a relationship all give and no receive? If you avoid the issue it will wear you down, so why not resolve it. Keep a cool head and calm heart, you may come out with something stronger and better.

Virgo

Still battling those never-ending bills? Yep, it seems likely. The best course of action would be to stay on course and avoid rocking the boat. There are undercurrents of change and confusion around you, but use that famed clear-headedness to see the wood from the trees. Mars in Aquarius affects work, daily routines and health. Use the energy positively to start a new fitness and health regimen, rather than fritter away energy through stress and nerves. Use the 18th and 19th to relax and socialize.

Scorpio

Can you feel something building up, but not able to quite put your finger on what’s going on? You are famed for your razor-sharp instincts and uncanny ability to ferret out secrets, but you could still get caught out when Uranus enters your opposing sign, Taurus, this month. Anyone born early in Scorpio, or with Scorpio rising could see some changes in their lives soon. That is not necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes, stagnant matters need a gentle shove, and Uranus can do just that. Lay low on the 15th and 16th if possible.

Gemini

There is a strong focus of energy in your Solar 12th house. Translate that as an almost intangible sense of things stirring in your subconscious. It may be difficult to sort out your thoughts from your emotions, but it seems you are seeking answers to questions that are still developing. Your dreams may give valuable clues, try to record them and give them some thought. Distant locales may be beckoning you. Is it a change of scene you need, or just restless energy? It is a great month to take up a study of a new and original subject.

Leo

It looks as though you have a busy schedule planned, with social and community activities stealing time away from family life at times. The key to navigating May with aplomb is by taking care of your health. Even though you like to think of yourself as a powerhouse of energy, your body has to be nurtured. Eat well, get rest and don’t push your limits, especially if you have travel plans. You are in the social loop, your company could be sought out.

Libra

The buildup of planetary energy in Capricorn has been a factor everyone is adjusting to. For Libra, it can mean a need to address family matters, or issues related to the home. Are you happy where you live? Would a good de-clutter help, or should you look for fresh pastures? Is your domestic situation getting you down because of unresolved conflicts? It is a time to dig deep within yourself and deal with anything that you have been avoiding addressing. Stay calm around the 16th, things will improve by the 19th.

Sagittarius

If you are feeling high energy, use this month as an opportunity to initiate new work methods and try out some innovative diet and fitness ideas. Finances may still need attention; so new habits and lifestyle choices could be key in helping you to trim costs. Impatience could be an issue for you, as the month gets under way, so pace yourself and work steadily towards the results you want. Use the 26th for some quality relaxation.

Aquarius

Are you going to be able to keep your cool this month, Aquarius? You have some pressure from both Uranus and Mars mid-month, especially if your birthday falls in late January. Domestic life could be subject to a few changes, causing your usual chilled attitude to become quite snappy and irritable. Smart water-bearers will harness that extra nervous energy and use it productively by embracing the mood of change and get in with positive steps before matters take their own course.

Capricorn

May is really a mixed bag for you, Capricorn. You know how to roll with the punches, but there will be times you need to be as flexible as possible. Make a point of being proactive, especially where kids, leisure activities and creative projects are concerned. You are entering a period where inspiration can come out of the blue; your originality and willingness to embrace the new and untried will help you stand out. Finances are under pressure, so maybe you can turn your newfound skills into hard cash.

Crave’s Mohallabiah Strawberry Cake

The holy month of Ramadan offers a chance to give up bad habits and get closer to God. It’s also all about the gatherings, yummy food and never-ending nights with friends and family. Throughout Ramadan you can’t help but feel at ease and at peace. So this Ramadan, let’s all try to learn something new and enjoy the true essence of Ramadan.

Breaking Your Fast the Healthy Way

Let’s face it; we need to pay a little bit more attention to our eating habits during Ramadan and put our words into action.

This year, try breaking your fast with a salad or soup first instead of digging into the stuffed pigeon right away. Wait for 15 to 20 minutes and maybe have some rice topped with your mom’s famously delicious molokheya. Make sure you leave the dining table full but not stuffed.  Give yourself an hour or 2 before you start enjoying your Om Ali or puffy kattayef dipped in eshta. As for the last portion of the evening, and by that we mean the sohour of course, give up the taameya and omelet and try enjoying yoghurt topped with honey and your choice of fruits or a small serving of homemade foul. Finally, please don’t forget to drink a lot of water. You have 8 hours so try to drink at least 1.5 liters of water; trust us you will need it.

Mohallabiah Strawberry Cake Recipe

For the base:

2 ½ cups (250 g) digestive biscuits, crumbled

½ cup (100 g) butter, melted

For the filling:

1 tin sweetened condensed milk (need quantity)

2 cups (500 ml) water

½ cup (60 g) corn flour

1 tablespoon blossom water

500 g strawberries, trimmed, washed and halved

5 tablespoons strawberry jam

Preparation:

  • Combine crumbled biscuit and butter in a bowl, rub the ingredients to form a dough, press dough over the base of a 24cm lose bottom cake tin, and then set in the fridge for 10 minutes.
  • Place sweetened condensed milk, water and corn flour in a large saucepan; bring to boil with constant stirring until mixture thickens. Add blossom water and stir.
  • Pour hot cream mixture over the prepared cake tin. Set aside to cool into a room temperature. Arrange strawberries over the cream mixture.
  • Heat strawberry jam in a small saucepan until it boils then pour the jam using a spoon over the strawberries.

Our Exclusive Chat with Ahmed Ezz on Abo Omar El Masry

There will be no shortage of choice when it comes to post-iftar viewing this Ramadan, but one series that is securely on our list is Abo Omar El Masry. With a mix of topical issues, thrown together with action, drama and a star-studded cast headed by hot star Ahmed Ezz, mark it on your calendar right now. Cairo West Magazine scooped an exclusive interview during his hectic filming schedule, just to whet our appetites even more.

CWM: Every few years you hit our screens with something exciting and it looks as though your new series Abo Omar El Masry will be no exception. What can you tell us about your role?

AE: Abo Omar is a man who was raised as an orphan and he seeks justice, for both the weak and the oppressed, and fights to win back their rights by any legal means necessary. This leads him into trouble and we will see as events unfold in the series where he’ll end up. We’ll also see how these troubles transform a peaceful man into someone entirely different.

Did you find that you relate to the role of Abo Omar?

I don’t have much in common with him as a character besides stubbornness and an the ability to not break easily!

You are backed up by a star-studded cast, have you worked with many of these well-known names before?

I have worked with Monzer Reyahnah before on El Maslaha, and he is a good friend of mine. His role in this series is quite different, and I wish him all the success in the world. In fact, even those I didn’t work with before, I hope to work with again and hope they get the recognition they deserve.

How do you cope with the hectic schedule of filming a Ramadan series, do you have time management tips?

This is a problem we as actors struggle with, and it’s an art to master! It can be insufferable, because a TV series is filmed over a long period of time, in many locations domestic and international, and can be difficult to shoot. But we put a lot of effort into it and do our best job because Ramadan cannot be postponed, and we hope the audiences like the final product.

What genre is your favorite to act in; action, comedy, drama?

I have no preference, for me it is all about the script and the ability to play different types of characters. I’m grateful that I have been able to play many different types of characters over the course of my career – rich, poor, moral, amoral, police officers and an oppressed person. I’m always looking for a challenge, something new and more complicated. What makes me choose a role is the script in front of me.

What do you usually do to prepare for a role?

Preparing for a role entails two facets: mental and physical. This is the same throughout all of my roles.

Do you have other passions and interests besides acting?

My life doesn’t have space for anything else besides filming, all I do is film! I become so absorbed into the character I’m playing during filming, I even cut myself off from those closest to me like my siblings or friends. But I come back after I’m done.

Do you manage to uphold your fitness routine during filming?

This is something I don’t give up during filming, even if I’m on a tight schedule. I make the effort to go, even if it’s at dawn.

How do you manage to maintain space for your private life in a world addicted to social media?

I have no official page on social media; I like to keep my private life private. I prefer my fans keep up to date with me through my work, promotional appearances, and my charitable causes.

Quick-fire Round

What is the best advice you have ever received?

The best advice I have ever received was from my family and friends, but now we are living in an age where people give you advice for their own gain – it’s rare to receive proper advice nowadays.

Who understands you more than anyone?

My siblings and other very close family members.

Where did you spend your most memorable holiday?

Vacation for me means the sea, so even if it’s Ein Sohkna, I’m happy.

Casual or formal?

After work is done, casual and comfortable!

Goals for 2018?

Do work that is meaningful to people and that carries a good message.
