6 Potential Side Effects of Fasting and Strategies to Overcome Them

Fasting Ramadan poses no risk for healthy people (if done right), but it can be risky for people with existing health conditions like diabetes. Those are advised to have a pre-Ramadan medical assessment to achieve safe fasting.

For those taking medications multiple times during the day, recommended strategies include choosing long-acting formulations (e.g., sustained release). For short-term conditions requiring treatment, such as antibiotics or pain-killers, medications with once-daily dosing should be selected. Non-oral medications such as injections, inhalations, suppositories and eye/ear drops are usually allowed during the fast.

Early consultation with a healthcare provider helps to identify any major challenges that require addressing prior to fasting. Always speak to your doctor about your options while fasting.

Dehydration:

It’s normal during fasting especially in this hot summer where fasting extends to 16 hours. Symptoms of dehydration include; increased thirst, decreased urine output, dry mouth, tiredness, headache and dizziness.

To reduce the risk of dehydration, stay well hydrated from iftar to sohour and keep sugar consumption moderate as sugar dehydrates your body.

Before iftar when you feel dehydrated, a cold shower could help to lower your body temperature.

Headache:

It is one of the common problems during fasting. It could be triggered by hunger, dehydration, altered sleep pattern or lack of addictive substances like caffeine or nicotine.

To avoid headache, don’t miss the sohour meal and consume an ample amount of water during the non-fasting period. Sohour should contain slow digesting carbs and watery vegetables and fruits and shouldn’t include salty foods.

Constipation:

Being active, drinking regularly and eating healthily will help to keep your bowel motions regular. Include lots of fruit and vegetables in your diet and increase the fiber content of your food. Oat is rich in essential fibers, it could be added to soups, desserts or milk. Prunes, that are readily consumed during Ramadan, are a natural remedy for constipation. If the problem persists, a short course of laxatives may help.

Hypoglycemia (Low blood sugar):

Even though hypoglycemia is of special concern in diabetics, it can occur for non-diabetics as well. This could happen due to excessive consumption of sugary foods and drinks especially at sohour.

Symptoms of hypoglycemia include weakness, dizziness, tiredness, poor concentration, trembling, inability to do physical activities, headaches and palpitations.

Measuring your blood glucose doesn’t break the fast. You should immediately break your fast if your blood glucose is <60 mg/dl [3.3 mmol/l]) or reaches <70 mg/dl (3.9 mmol/l) in the first few hours after the start of the fast.

Finally, remember that safety comes first and that fasting is not intended to create excessive hardship. Actually, Islam encourages Muslims to be mindful of their health. While there are several exemptions from fasting, many patients still choose to fast. If you are one of them, make sure to speak to your healthcare provider for careful support and advice, along with shared decision-making regarding treatment plans, to make sure that fasting will not adversely affect your health.

Indigestion:

To avoid indigestion, you can break your fast on something light like water, dates and soup then wait some time (you can pray Maghreb) before starting the main meal and eat slowly.

Don’t sleep or work out immediately after iftar, wait 3 hours before sleeping and 1 hour before exercising.

Heartburn:

Fasting normally reduces the amount of stomach acid that digests food, but when the brain thinks of food or smells it, it sends signals to the stomach to release more acid which causes heartburn.

Avoiding deep fried and spicy foods in addition to reducing caffeinated beverages and reducing smoking, which helps a lot.

Mince at Capital Promenade

Hunting down really good burgers in Sheikh Zayed with all of our favorite sides has become one of our pastimes. Now that Mince has come to such a handy location in Sheikh Zayed, life just became a lot easier!

Type of Cuisine & Signature Dishes

Burgers and much, much more! The Mince Platter, of course, is a signature dish comprising of a combo of chicken popcorn, fried mozzarella sticks, onion rings, wings and a selection of dips. The Juicy Lucy burger, the irresistible Sliders and Waffle Potatoes served with cheese sauce, mint yogurt with beef bacon bits, sweet relish and pickles. For anyone with a sweet tooth, don’t miss out on the Elvis French Toast; homemade toast served with Nutella, banana and caramel sauce, with the option of adding ice cream.

Dishes Sampled

It’s hard not to swing into an upbeat mood from the minute you walk in the door of Mince. Is it the crisp, punchy decor, the great choice of music, or the relaxed, friendly smiles of the serving team? Whatever, it works!

Appetites primed, we ordered up large. Slender fries, Loaded Nachos with chilli and lashings of cheese and sour cream (cardiologists can turn the page at this point), the Mince Platter with Honey Mustard and BBQ salsa and Corn Dogs that took us straight to the fairgrounds of the 60s. We added a virtuous touch with a fresh, crunchy Caesar Salad, we are proud to say.

There was no chance of our missing out on the famous Mince burgers. For us, Sliders were the way to go. Easily demolished in a couple of bites, they are perfect replicas of the full-sized burgers, but you can get to enjoy a selection. We chose the Juicy Lucy with American cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles and the special Mince sauce, the Smoked Burger with caramelized onions, raspberry jam, smoked cheese and Mince sauce and the BBQ Burger with caramelized onions, served with beef bacon, American cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, pickles, Mince sauce and BBQ sauce. And yes, they were just what we had hoped for. Lean, flavor-packed beef, fresh salad ingredients and great buns. Nothing sloppy or greasy, every element had been perfectly judged and combined.

Even though we had eaten what seemed a ridiculous amount, and enjoyed every morsel, we spent a few minutes sipping our fresh orange juice while our fresh apple pie was in the oven. Common sense ruled, we decided to share. Our waiter immediately produced two plates with gleaming cutlery, spick and span like everything at this superb establishment. Topped with vanilla ice-cream, it proved that classics are winners!

Beverage Options Available

Shakes and smoothies, juices and non-alcoholic cocktails, along with a good selection of coffee and tea.

Décor & Ambience

Urban chic, contemporary and fresh. Think black and white mural, yellow, zingy apple green, black accents, natural wood tables and industrial style steel tubing straddling the ceiling. Seating is both indoor and outdoor, with both areas being pleasant and welcoming.

Ambience is lively without being overbearing. A nice hum of conversation blending with the background music.

Clientele Mix & Price Range

Perfect for all ages, not just for kids. Maybe burgers bring out the inner child in all of us. On our weekday visit we saw mainly groups of young professionals in their 20s and 30s. Price range is moderate.

Zinc at Guezira Plaza

Zinc at Guezira Plaza

Think about zinc. One of the most essential mineral nutrients, we would be lost without it. Then think Zinc. Great international food in Sheikh Zayed, inspired by zinc and based on a mantra of being as good for our bodies as it is for our palates.

Type of Cuisine & Signature Dishes

Contemporary International. A concise, appealing menu that encompasses soups, salads, starters, entrees and desserts while allowing for seasonal variety.

Signature dishes include the 600g Beef Tenderloin (for sharing), Crispy Asian Chicken Salad, Citrus Infused Salmon Gravlax, Penne Coconut Cream Grilled Salmon, Preserved Lemon Cream Chicken, Beef Tenderloin with Blue Cheese, Strawberry Puree and Spinach, Sweet Potato and Lentil Soup.

Dishes Sampled

Let’s face it. We didn’t rush into ordering simply because it was so pleasant to sit back and enjoy the music and the atmosphere at Zinc. The service team was enthusiastic and helpful, but we still wanted time to peruse what is a really original menu, while dipping our grilled bread into the spinach dip and hot tomato salsa that had arrived promptly at our table.

We settled on Crispy Fried Coconut Chicken to start, with garlic and sweet chilli dips on the side. Tender and light, the coconut casing was a great change from the ubiquitous breadcrumbs we usually encounter. The pasta had been highly recommended, so after deliberating as the choices all looked good, we opted for the Penne Coconut Cream Grilled Salmon. The idea of using coconut cream with pasta was a new one for us, but it actually tasted superb with the al dente pasta cooked perfectly and honey-glazed salmon packing loads of flavor. The dish would be a perfect solution for anyone who wants to avoid dairy products but with a weakness for creamy sauces.

Upon the manager’s recommendation, we shared the 600g Tenderloin, agreeing that it sounded excellent. It came to the table on a sizzling hot plate, complete with beautifully turned spring vegetables, fresh mushrooms, potato bonbons, a herb-mustard sauce in addition to a rich foie gras sauce. Although it was shared between two of us, it could easily have stretched to serve three or more. Tender, tasty and lean; it came cooked just as requested.

We made sure to leave space for dessert of course. Who could pass on Pavlova with Mixed Berries. Pavlova is always one of our favorites, with its contrasting crunchy and soft meringue set off with fresh cream and berries. Even though that was really a great finish to our meal we were also persuaded to try Zinc’s special Chocolate Mousse. It immediately reminded us of another old favorite, a fridge cake. Layers of crisp biscuit moulded together with chocolate mousse, it was served chilled, straight from the refrigerator. It is quite substantial, so do consider sharing!

Other Menu Options that Appealed

The Persian Spiced Australian Lamb Shank looks interesting, as does the Citrus Infused Salmon Gravlax with radish relish, fresh cream and beetroot puree.

Beverage Options Available

A wide range of smoothies, juices, mocktails and cocktails, along with beer and wine (soft options only during Ramadan, of course).

Décor & Ambience

Zinc features floor to ceiling glass windows, making it light, fresh and airy. The color palette is neutral with grey tones predominating. Burst of accent color come from lush jewel-toned aqua velvet chairs and fresh green plants that serve to break up the mix of high and low seating.

Ambience is very chilled and relaxed, we enjoyed the music playing in the background. Even though Zinc is primarily for great dining, it has an attractive ‘clubby’ vibe.

Clientele Mix & Price Range

25+, young professionals, couples and groups of friends. Price range is moderate.

Tamara Bistro at Capital Promenade

When you find a familiar name popping up all over town it is a good indication that the food, service and vibe is reliably good. Based on that, we hurried across to the newest branch of popular eatery Tamara for authentic Lebanese food in Sheikh Zayed.

Type of Cuisine & Signature Dishes:

This typically Lebanese cuisine has everything from appetizers, salads, soups, grills and beverages to yummy desserts.

Signature dishes include Mashawi Tamara, a combination of grilled kebab, veal, fish, salmon and shrimps with a vinaigrette sauce; all shawerma items and savory pastries, manakish included. The Ghazal Beirut is rumoured to be excellent as well.

Dishes Sampled

For us, the right way to start a good Lebanese meal is with traditional appetizers. That meant Moutabal Betenjan, the eggplant and tahina dip that just begged to be scooped up with hot bread straight from the oven, a tangy tabbouleh and muhammara. Everything was fresh and delivered great flavors. The muhammara offered a spicy kick that contrasted well with its rich red bell pepper and pomegranate molasses as we kept diving in for more. The main dishes appeared promptly, almost too promptly as we were still immersed in enjoying our starters.

We had been intrigued by the recommendation of kibbeh and whole chickpeas in a rich onion and pomegranate molasses sauce. The kibbeh was excellent and the almost nutty flavor of the chickpeas toned down the sharpness of the pomegranate. With sides of Batata Harra, with fresh coriander and a sprinkle of chili, and Orz Sharki bel Khalta wel Mekasarat, otherwise known as savory rice with nuts and sultanas, we were feeling well fed by the time or mixed grill arrived. We had elected to share, and the generous portion of shish taouk, chicken kofta, veal kofta and cubes of veal kebab was more than enough to keep us happy.

We had planned to finish off our freshly squeezed orange juice and lemon with mint before calling it a night, but the temptation of sharing dessert won us over. No regrets, the Outhmanliya was a creamy indulgence with feather light konafa, and the Halawet El Jibneh also lived up to expectations.

Other Menu Options that Appealed

The Maklouba Lahmeh bel Betenjan, upside-down rice, cauliflower, zucchini and fried eggplant with tomato sauce would be a good vegetarian option, and as the shawerma is highly recommended we would like to try that as well.

Beverage Options Available

There is a comprehensive beverage menu, with plenty of hot and cold traditional drinks available. Add on fresh juices, smoothies and mocktails and you have something for everyone.

Décor & Ambience

Tamara décor is always a delight. The fresh, vibrant take on Oriental design is reflected in its spectacular focal point of hand-blown glass hanging lights in jewel colors and the dainty white lattice work panels that surround the indoor dining area. It will be a perfect setting for Ramadan iftarSeating is both indoor and outdoor, so as the warmer evenings set in it should become a popular spot for whiling away the time.

Ambience is bright and breezy, the atmosphere is more conducive to groups of friends and families than intimate date nights. The music on our visit was upbeat Oriental, fitting in with the general style.

Clientele Mix & Price Range

It is obviously a popular venue for families, at least in the early part of the evening, but we think it would be ideal for groups of friends who enjoy sharing dishes as well. Price range is reasonable.

Skin in the Game by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

A bold new work that challenges many of our long-held beliefs about risk, reward, politics, religion, and finance. The phrase “skin in the game” is one we have often heard but rarely stopped to truly dissect. It is the backbone of risk management, but it’s also an astonishingly rich worldview that applies to all aspects of our lives. Taleb says, “The symmetry of skin in the game is a simple rule that’s necessary for fairness and justice, and the ultimate BS-buster,” and “Never trust anyone who doesn’t have skin in the game. Without it, fools and crooks will benefit, and their mistakes will never come back to haunt them.”

Tamara’s Baharat Spiced Beef Hummus

Kick off Ramadan season with this delicious Lebanese hummus recipe courtesy of Tamara, the perfect mezze dish for any iftar spread.

Ingredients

1 cup dried chickpeas
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 clove garlic
3/4 cup tahini
3 tbsp lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon cumin
1/2-3/4 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup finely diced onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon cumin
1/4 teaspoon coriander
1/8 teaspoon cardamom
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg
Pinch of all spice
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 lb ground chuck (beef)
1/4 cup pine nuts

Olive oil
Tahini
Paprika
Roasted sesame seeds
Black sesame seeds
Grilled pita or warm laffa

Method

Place the dried chickpeas in a large glass or plastic bowl and cover with at least 6 cups of cool water. Leave for at least 12 hours or overnight. Drain and change the water out at least once, no earlier than 2 hours after the soak starts.

Place the soaked chickpeas in a large stockpot and cover with 8 to 10 cups of water. Add the baking soda and bring to a boil over high heat. Once it boils, it will begin to foam. You want to skim away all that foam. Boil for 2 minutes while skimming. Turn the heat down to medium-low and simmer, uncovered, for 35 to 45 minutes.

Once cooled, drain the chickpeas well, saving at least a half-cup of cooking liquid. Place the chickpeas in a food processor. Process until a thick paste forms, about a minute or two. Add the garlic clove and process again until smooth. Add the tahini, lemon juice, cumin and salt, and process again on high. If the hummus is too thick, slowly stream in a little of the chickpea cooking liquid to loosen it up. Taste for seasoning and adjust with salt and lemon juice.

For the beef, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions when hot and sauté for 4 to 5 minutes until softened and translucent. Add the garlic, paprika, cumin, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice, salt and pepper. Sauté for about a minute to release the oils and aromas from the spices. Add the beef and break it up as it browns. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes until the beef is cooked through and browned nicely. Mix in the pine nuts and cook for another minute. Taste and adjust seasoning.

Plate the hummus on 2 serving dishes and create a well in the middle. Place some of the beef right in the middle of the well. Garnish with olive oil, tahini paste, paprika, roasted sesame seeds and black sesame seeds. Serve immediately with pita or laffa. Enjoy!

A trio of bruschetta arrived next; crunchy fresh bread topped with buffalo mozzarella and anchovies, tomato, garlic and Parmesan shavings, and a simpler mozzarella, tomato and basil. A Salmon and Pistachio Salad followed, packed with crunchy red cabbage, generous servings of smoked salmon and grilled shrimp, onions, lettuce, crushed pistachio and a creamy lemon dressing. Finally, the Chicken Liver Paté was creamy and filling, served with crunchy fresh bread and certainly enough to share on a table.

For mains, we enjoyed the Pizza Preferita, Lasagna Dello Chef, and Veal don Carlo. The pizza was perfection, made with imported flour and tomatoes to ensure that true Italian taste. Perfect crust topped with fresh and chewy scamorza cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, olives and mushroom – we just couldn’t get enough of this pizza! The lasagna was also a surprise; ricotta cheese, boiled egg, minced meat, béchamel and tomato sauce, and … boiled peas! Surprisingly delicious and super filling.

The Veal Don Carlo was beautifully tender with a sauce comprising of artichokes, sun-dried tomato and mint. Served with grilled veggies and creamy mashed potatoes, this is a standout dish that had us scrapping the plate.

With very little room to spare, we finished off the meal with a Caramel Cheesecake, made fresh on premises, and the Semifreddo Al Caffe, a sponge cake with homemade cappuccino ice cream. Both were rich and delicious, ensuring that Chef Carlo has the entire menu covered and perfected from start to finish.
