Body Contouring & Sculpting: Everything You Need to Know

Men and women alike have been nipped and tucked for decades, but keeping up with trends in the world of cosmetic surgery is becoming a feat in itself. Body sculpting, the overall term used to describe a wide range of procedures designed to reshape and improve the appearance of your body, is an innovative and painless route to achieve quicker results for patients struggling with stubborn fat, especially after massive weight loss. We spoke with plastic surgeon Dr. George Zaher FACS from Royal Clinic to find out all you need to know about the sculpting process before you jump on the latest fat-shifting and body contouring trends.

Could you briefly explain to us what body sculpting involves?

Body sculpting is a procedure that involves getting rid of the superficial fatty layer right beneath the skin and strengthening the fibrous bands connecting skin to muscle to give the body its ideal contour and shape.

What are the most common reasons a patient undergoes this procedure?

Body sculpting provides a solution for many clients with localized bulks of fat in areas such as the belly or love handles, especially for those who have lost a lot of weight or following pregnancy. Body sculpting is also very important after liposuction to minimize any chance of asymmetry or dimpling in the skin, thereby smoothing the skin of the body and giving it back its curvy look.

Is anyone eligible or are there prerequisites or exceptions?

It is crucial that we determine whether a patient is eligible or not in the preliminary examination. Because body sculpting targets the surface layer of fat, it cannot be performed on obese clients. If a patient has a thick layer of fat, liposuction must be performed first, followed by body sculpting.

Does skin need to be tightened following the procedure?

The skin to fat ratio is also a very important parameter to be considered during the preliminary examination to determine both eligibility and the severity of skin laxity or sagging that can result after the procedure. As a result, we may require skin lifting as well. However, I would advise that the patient wait for three months following liposuction and body sculpting to give the skin a chance to possibly regain its firmness with some exercise before opting for skin lifting.

Are there risks and/or side effects to these procedures? If so, how can they be minimized?

As with any surgical procedure, the patient must be generally fit for the operation, which we pre-determine through lab work. If we discover any complications, we must tackle them prior to the procedure. We must also take into account any medications the patient is presently taking, particularly anticoagulant drugs such as aspirin or heparin that may invite hemophilia. The patient should also refrain from taking vitamins such as Omega 3 and fish oil. Following body sculpting, the only risk that remains is that the patient regains the fat lost during the procedure, which shouldn’t occur as long as the patient monitors his/her eating habits.

How long does the treatment take and is there a recovery period?

The patient goes home the same day of the procedure, wearing a body garment to reduce swelling and ensure the best results regarding skin firmness. The body garment is worn all day for three weeks, and then for the following three weeks it is worn for 12 hours a day. This is one of the integral post-procedural aspects that will determine the shape and contour of your body. Throughout the first couple of weeks, the patient should avoid strenuous activity or exercise. Afterwards, however, exercise is vital to maintain results and build muscle.

Is it painful during and/or after the procedure?

Body sculpting is now performed by local anesthesia or epidural, so the patient cannot feel pain throughout the procedure. Afterwards, painkillers and medication are administered to reduce edema and any discomfort the patient may experience.

When can a patient begin to notice results?

Following the procedure, the patient can immediately begin to notice the contours of their body as much more visible. The results are most visible three months after the procedure, where a patient can observe optimum body contours.

How permanent are the results? What lifestyle habits can a patient take into consideration to maintain them?

The results are for life, if maintained by an improved life pattern regarding food choices and meal timings for every individual. Of course, exercise is also an essential factor to maintain the results.

What piece of advice do you normally give your patients before and after undergoing a cosmetic procedure?

It is critical to plan the procedure thoroughly with the patient beforehand to make sure that, not only are they eligible, but that they’re also willing to preserve the outcome. This means that they have to understand that some of their lifestyle habits must change. The doctor will do his part during the procedure but it is solely the patient’s responsibility afterwards to maintain those results.

Nail The Look: Top Trends & Nail Care Tips

This season’s color palette is all about darker hues and pretty neutrals to keep the attention on your outfit!

Want to go more on the creative side? Here are 4 looks that debuted on the runways guaranteed to give your nails an edgy look!

NAILS & HEALTH

The natural color and condition of your nails can say a lot about your wellbeing and indicate there are potential medical issues.

Paleness: Very pale nails can be a sign of anemia, heart issues, liver disease, or malnutrition.

Whiteness: White nail with dark tips can indicate liver problems.

Yellowing: This could indicate a fungal infection or a severe thyroid problem, lung disease or diabetes.

Blue: Bluish nails indicate a lung problem such as emphysema or a circulation issue in which the body is not getting enough oxygen.

Pitted or rippled nails: This could be an early sign of psoriasis or arthritis.

Cracking and splitting: Frequent hand washing is the most common cause of nail splitting, however, dry and brittle nails could be linked to thyroid disease, tuberculosis, or malnutrition. If combined with yellowing, it is more like a fungal infection.

Dark lines: Any dark lines under the nail should be looked at by a doctor immediately as they could indicate melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

10 WAYS TO AVOID NAIL PROBLEMS

  • Take in your own kit when visiting the nail salon and avoid soaking feet
  • Wear kitchen gloves when washing the dishes or cleaning with harsh chemicals
  • Avoid handling strong soaps and detergents
  • Don’t clean under your nails too often or too roughly
  • Avoid pushing back your cuticles
  • Don’t bite your nails
  • Avoid smoking
  • Moisturize your hands, nails and cuticles frequently
  • Don’t share towels, always dry yourself thoroughly after bathing (particularly between the toes), and wear flip-flops in communal areas such as the gym or swimming pool
  • Make sure your shoes fit well and have plenty of room for air movement

Zaitouna Food Hall at Galleria40

Say, “Food hall” and gourmet quality doesn’t usually spring to mind. But, listen up! Zaitouna has totally raised the bar when it comes to the concept of combining a variety of food options in one brilliantly designed space. Just think, no more arguing over who wants to eat what. There is an eclectic range of outlets, all serving the spacious, airy courtyard area. The best news is that they are all home-grown initiatives, so don’t expect to stumble across any of the endemic global food chains here.

Seating options range between tables and comfortable colorful chairs, wooden tables and benches; all giving an easy view of the open-kitchen outlets. We loved the wall-sized murals, and the upbeat music selection that streamed directly from Dubai. We heard that there is live music at least five evenings a month, and it was so high-energy at the launch party that everyone was up and dancing.  Zaitouna is family-friendly; kids can play to their hearts content at Club Liko, located at the end of the courtyard, but still within eyesight of mom and dad.

So, what about the food? If you are in the mood for Mexican, head towards Gringo’s. Yummy local Egyptian street food? Try Zouki-T. Crazy about Thai? Sabai Sabai of course. Love Scandinavian open sandwiches? You shouldn’t miss out on Rustik. Burgers, hot dogs and wings? Fat Cow, of course. For club sandwiches with a unique twist give Stacked a try. Lorenzo serves up authentic Italian pizza, and Mounir has traditional Lebanese dishes that beg to be tried. Fans of feteer should check out Zaza, it has great grills and sandwich wraps as well. And don’t skip Soul, its wafer-thin super healthy beet, sweet potato, carrot and potato crisps went down a treat with a selection of excellent dips. Wash your meal down with a selection of beverages from Liquid and you are good to go.

Clean, fresh flavors and top-notch ingredients are the big draw here. Rustik truly is a breath of Scandinavia.

Signatures Dishes

Danish open-faced sandwiches, salads and yoghurt parfaits. The menu is concise, so count everything as being a signature item.

Dishes Sampled

We felt like mixing it up a bit, so ordered a platter with a selection of various sandwiches. The presentation was a picture of freshness, with vibrant colors against a simple wooden board.  Each combination offered a different taste treat:  Roget Laks with smoked salmon, green beans and dill on a cream cheese base,  Fisketfilet with fried fish, fried capers and dill resting on a remoulade sauce, Aeg Og Rejer with shrimp, boiled egg and dill on sour cream with a dainty slice of lemon as a garnish. Then on to Leverposte, a delicious concoction of chicken liver pâté, garnished with beef bacon, beets, berry chutney and orange zest, along with Kalkunbryst, with sliced turkey breast, pickled cabbage, orange slices and orange zest, Kyllingsalat, a creamy dollop of pulled chicken breast, sautéed mushroom, green beans, sour cream and mayonnaise. The final sandwich, the Kartoffelmad, sealed the deal with a slice of potato topped with roasted tomato, beef bacon and dijonaise. Mouthwatering!

Everything delivered a unique bundle of flavors and textures, with the home-baked goodness of the bread base providing just the right balance for the toppings.

Other Menu Options that Appealed

Next time we would love to try the salads, maybe the Spinach Salad with apple, red onion, Feta cheese and slivered almonds.

Soul Chips & Dips at Zaitouna

You can kiss unhealthy mass-produced crisps and snacks goodbye. Soul brings you something much better. Wafer thin crisps made from sweet potato, beet, carrot and potato, along with an addictive range of dips! They are great for munching in front of the telly, perfect as party food for kids or adults, and so brilliantly packaged they could make a welcome gift for any hostess instead of those ubiquitous sweets. The box comes in three sizes, to suit any appetite and situation.

To be honest, we couldn’t decide which crisp came out tops, they were all good, and tasted blissfully healthy. You can go with just potato, or sweet potato with or without salt, or mix it up with a combination of all. It is the dips that elevate the experience to another strata.  To tempt your taste buds: Green Hummus, Minted Peas, Minted Beets, Dill and Green Onion, Spinach, Tomato Chutney, Pickled Lemon Tahini, Aioli, Herbed Mayo, Green Nham Jim, Wasabi Cream, Blue Cheese, Walnut Pesto or Mexican Salsa. You also have the option of adding Chicken Cubes or Beef Cubes, but we were more than happy with our mixed selection and dips. The Green Nham Jim was a Thai blend of piquant and sweet with a herby punch, and we could happily demolish jar after jar of the Tomato Chutney.  Where would you start?

If sugar cravings are getting to you, go for Green Apple with Sugar and Cinnamon. Choose from Hazelnut Chocolate, White Chocolate or Salted Caramel to make the dipping experience complete.

The arrival of Sabai Sabai is a boon for all fans of authentic Asian cuisine on the west side of town, the quality and wide range of dishes are just what we needed. Mainly Thai, with a wide selection of traditional favorites, lovers of Chinese dishes will find a menu to select from as well. And not to be missed, Vietnamese glass noodle rolls, stuffed with crunchy vegetables.

Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled

The Vietnamese glass noodle spring rolls are a hit, as well as the other noodle dishes. We would say, just go for it, try something new and you will not be disappointed.

We wanted to try some old favorites as well as explore some new dishes, so we kicked off with Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce and Cucumber Salad. The chicken was tender and just right for dunking in the piquant peanut sauce, which we would have liked a little more of, may we add. That made way for a plate full of crisp Spring Rolls with their hot, sweet chilli dip. Always one of our ‘must have’ dishes, they disappeared in a flash.

Even if they look a little unusual, the Poh Pia Viatnam, Vietnamese glass noodle spring rolls with peanut topping were a hit with all of us. Crunchy and fresh, they were a nice balance against the fried and grilled items. Everything was quite filling, so we opted to share a Kang Keaw Warn Kai, or Thai Green Curry to you and us. The tender chicken with cubes of eggplant was fragrant with basil, a subtly spiced dish, rich with coconut milk, this will be a must on any return visit. We also couldn’t say no to the Khow Pud Koon, perfectly seasoned fried Thai rice with shrimp.  Another hit, in our opinion.

Other Menu Options that Appealed

Next time around we would love to try Pasta Tom Yang Kung, Thai fusion noodles in a spicy hot and sour mix with shrimp, lemon grass, mushroom, galangal and fresh coriander. Pla Salamon Nueng See Eew, a steamed salmon fillet with fresh sliced ginger, sweet chilli, spring onion and soya sauce would be on our list as well, along with Kaeng Phed Ped Yang, roasted duck in Thai red curry sauce with coconut milk, kaffir lime leaves and Thai basil.

Worthy of note: Our meal came on traditional blue and white Thai crockery with traditional pewter cutlery, but you can request it packaged to go, so any leftovers can be whisked off home rather easily.  Takeaway and delivery are both available.

Zaza at Zaitouna Food Hall serves everyone’s favorite Egyptian food, including feteersogokshawerma on coal, hawawshi, kebda, and halawa bl eshta. The slogan is, “A taste of real food”, and that is exactly what you get. Looking to satisfy our craving for Egyptian food, we headed straight there.

Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Zaza is very proud of its savory mix cheese and chicken fajita feteer, its mixed grill platter, and its sweet Custard & Cream feteer.

We tried the Sogok sandwich, which was perfectly seasoned and cooked with black pepper and a nice lime twist. Then we tried the Kofta sandwich, which was coal-grilled to perfection, the meat was tender and the onion added a bit of flavor to the mix. Last dish we sampled was the Chicken fajita, made with red and yellow peppers and sweet onion to balance out the flavors of paprika and cumin. Not oily or heavy at all; the sandwiches were made in soft tortilla bread with a side of tahini and tomeya.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

We were too full to try out the feteer but we had our eyes on the hotdog feteer, Kiri cheese feteerhalawa feteer and eshta feteer, for next time. Soft beverages are on offer.

Décor & Ambience

Zaitouna Food Hall is vibrant and uplifting, with natural plants and colorful graffiti covering the walls. It’s quiet, unlike any food court at a mall and the tables are comfortable and not arranged too closely together.

Clientele mix: We went for an early dinner at about 5 pm and there were a few school and college students. The place suits families with kids, with a very convenient play area. It’s also a great place to go with friends with varying tastes thanks to the diverse food options.

Price range: Moderate, the quality of the food is great.

In the Stars: Your October Horoscopes

By Maeri Frances

Last month closed with powerful Pluto returning to direct motion. The effects may not kick in immediately, but before long you should see things falling into a distinct pattern. Now is the testing time to see how well you handled things during the summer.

P.S. Don’t forget, your rising sign plays a big role, so check that out as well if you know it.

October Birthdays:

2nd October – Sting (musician), 3rd October – Gwen Stefani (singer), 4th October – Dakota Johnson (actress), 8th October – Matt Damon (actor), Ruby (actress), 10th October – Mohamed Mounir (musician), 11th October – Amr Diab (singer), 12th October – Hugh Jackman (actor), 13th October – Sacha Baron Cohen (actor), 18th October – Jac Efron (actor), 23rd October – Ryan Reynolds (actor), 26th October – Mohamed Khan (film director), 28th October – Julia Roberts (actress).

Our Birthday Sign:

Libra:

Use the first couple of days of the month to work on your public image. Things get a bit sticky on the 3rd and 4th so you may need to avoid conflict and use emotional intelligence to survive. If you have been spending recklessly, you may come down to earth with a bump on the 5th. Put new plans into action around the New Moon of the 9th, it takes place in your sign; hopefully things will have improved by the 15th. By month’s end your mood should be much lighter.

much lighter.

Aries:

Once again you feel torn between domestic and partnership concerns and a need to perform well on the job. The opening week of October will put you to the test. It’s not the best month for opening up a line of credit; don’t be too optimistic if you were planning major investments. A small delay may let hidden factors emerge, giving you a clearer picture. The 23rd calls for action, but keep things above board.

Taurus:

Taurus may be a on a rollercoaster ride in relationship issues.  One day it’s hot, the next day it’s not. Communication channels may open up around the 10th so use this period to have some heart-to-heart chats. Looking forward, the period around the 19th to 24th seems especially volatile, so stay chilled and avoid throwing in the towel. With the New Moon in your sign on the 24th you should be able to come up with a fresh perspective.

Gemini:

The month opens with a strong focus on earnings. Don’t let emotions enter the fray, as on the 3rd arguments could blow up out of the smallest issues. These could reverberate through the 4th as well, it will be important to exercise a little humility, no matter how much your pride has been wounded. As you get further into the month you should seize any opportunity to rebuild bridges, as well as improving your daily wellbeing routines. This should pay off by month’s end.

Cancer:

Ok, party time is over, so get back into work and responsibility mode. Maybe if you focus on home and family matters a bit more this month, the amount of ground you can cover will surprise. That could mean a home do over, so let your creative talents loose. There will still be plenty of opportunities for fun and relaxation, overall you should come out of October feeling positive and fulfilled. The 29th would be a great day for a get-together, especially if kids are involved.

Leo:

If home and property matters have been on your mind, this October may give answers to some of the questions that have been niggling away at you. Things may not fall into place immediately, and there could be a need to adjust your wish list, but it seems that the goal has been defined and you are on track. A health issue that had been annoying you may be resolved as well, so you should have every reason to be upbeat.

Virgo:

While your focus early in the month may be about yourself and your finances, the mood changes by the 10th.  Expect a major upswing in communication and meetings, short trips and visits. If you are smart you will be well organized and able to cope with a fast paced October. While Virgo is usually eager to please, take care that you don’t promise more than you can deliver. Use that famous pragmatism and commonsense.

Scorpio:

The force appears to be with you. Pluto, your sign ruler is now in direct motion again, bringing confidence and conviction to your thought processes, along with your usual secretive subtlety of course. Take care not to depend on superficial solutions when it comes to getting what you want. Venus turns retrograde on the 5th in your birth sign, so any laziness or insincerity will stick out like a sore thumb.

Sagittarius:

Keen as you can be when it comes to bolting into the middle of situations, this month you should rein yourself in and play it low-key. The more you can tuck yourself quietly away behind the scenes, the better. That also goes for any relationships that you need to keep discreetly under wraps. The time for the big reveal is not quite ripe. You can speak out after Mercury enters your sign on the final day of the month.

Capricorn:

It’s all happening at once Capricorn. Pluto returns to direct motion in your birth sign, meaning that matters that had been obscure or off track will seem clearer. You will feel more in control, or at least in tune with what is going on. You could be caught up in a social whirl, or even meetings with peers and people who share common interests. This can be productive and helpful, so long as you can detach yourself from people who are only there to soak up the atmosphere.

Aquarius:

You are really under the microscope this month, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Just be productive, original, unique, resourceful and immaculately presented and you should come out smiling. There is potential for improvement in career matters, so long as you remain focused. There may be a bit of back-biting going on, but learn to rise above it. The 10th may bring some unsettling news, but stay calm and carry on.

Pisces:

This is a great month to add to your résumé by taking some courses or adding to your skills. Travel is on the cards as well, so keep a bag packed in case the opportunity crops up. Sometimes you may feel that you are on shaky ground but it seems that you have friends in high places who are supporting you quietly from the sidelines. They may have an agenda of their own, but hey, a helping hand is great when you need it!

by  A.J. Finn

Anna Fox lives alone—a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times… and spying on her neighbors.

Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, and their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble—and its shocking secrets are laid bare.

The War of the Worlds

by H.G. Wells, Felix Bennett (Illustrations), Eric Brown (Retelling)

No one would have believed that planet Earth was being watched by creatures more intelligent than humankind. But planet Earth was not only being watched – soon it would be invaded by monstrous creatures from Mars who strode about the land in great mechanical tripods, bringing death and destruction with them. What can possibly stop an invading army equipped with heat-rays and poisonous black gas, intent on wiping out the human race? This is one man’s story of that incredible invasion, from the time the first Martians land near his home town, to the destruction of London. Is this the end of human life on Earth?

The Four Tendencies

by Gretchen Rubin

During her multi-book investigation into understanding human nature, Gretchen Rubin realized that by asking the seemingly dry question “How do I respond to expectations?” we gain explosive self-knowledge. She discovered that based on their answer, people fit into Four Tendencies: Upholders, Questioners, Obligers, and Rebels. Our Tendency shapes every aspect of our behavior, so using this framework allows us to make better decisions, meet deadlines, suffer less stress, and engage more effectively.

With sharp insight, compelling research, and hilarious examples, The Four Tendencies will help you get happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative. It’s far easier to succeed when you know what works for you.

Travel the World on a Shoestring Budget

By: Mariam Elhamy

For those of you who have a passion for traveling but lack the funds, Aliaa ElRamlawy offers a unique way of traveling the world on a budget. ElRamlawy has traveled to Turkey, Poland, Berlin, Vienna, Amsterdam and Prague, all alone, at a young age. Later, she founded Gallivanter Travel, a travel- advising agency, to help prospective globetrotters plan their travels in an effective way, on a low budget.

The travel advising sessions she gives are informative, providing attendees with A to Z information about low-cost getaways and answering specific questions on any upcoming plans travelers may have. Cairo West Magazine sat down with ElRamlawy to learn more about her experiences, what to do and what to avoid.

CWM: What started your passion for traveling?

AER: My parents ignited my passion for traveling. They always encouraged my older sister to travel abroad; she has been to so many countries and was the first person to push me to travel on my own. I also used to watch a lot of Turkish TV series and I learned a bit about the culture and the language. Falling completely in love with it, I decided to go there.

Take us through the process. How can you guarantee booking safe and clean hostels before arriving at a country?

I love doing the research, so I check each and every hostel that I book through 5 different apps or websites to make sure that all the reviews are positive. Whenever I find one bad review on a website, I start looking for a different hostel. Also, I never book last minute, I always book at least three weeks in advance, because that affords me time to do some research and find the cheapest, cleanest and safest places.

Research is the answer to everything! Before I go to any country, I do proper research about all the cheap places where I can find healthy food. I also try to find hostels with a small kitchenette so that I can buy fresh fruits, vegetables, and other ingredients, and I prepare my own meals. This really helps when you are staying in a country where the restaurants are really expensive or you need a change from the local food.

How do you calculate the money you spend daily during your trip?

I calculate everything I’m planning to do beforehand so that I can set a budget and stick to it. Accommodation, transportation, tickets to any sightseeing activity, food and even water is calculated daily and I always keep extra cash for safety.

Do you make an income while you are traveling for long periods of time?

I don’t make an income while traveling, but during travels I try to save money through booking early. For example, if flying to my destination is expensive, I cut down on the things I intend to do over there so the whole trip doesn’t exceed my budget. I have even slept at the airport or a bus station a few times. I also rarely use transportation; I usually walk to the places that I want to go to so that I can really explore the country. I avoid eating at fancy restaurants or touristic places; you can get the same exact meal for less at less known restaurants.

How can you learn about different cultures and meet locals without speaking their language?

I use an application called SayHi, it translates any language by sound, this way I can understand what people are saying around me. I also never shy away from asking for help, some people are really friendly and within a few hours we could be having lunch together and they become my new friend and tour guide. Making friends around the world is the best thing ever, because we stay in touch and sometimes they come visit me in Egypt!

Have you ever experienced culture shock?

I always learn as much as I can about the culture of the country I’m going to. I find it helps a lot when I read lots of books, and do my research before traveling.

How do you pack for a long trip?

I’m not good at packing at all! I love shopping, so I always travel with one bag and come back with two… plus extra weight! But I don’t pay for it; I take out all the extra clothes and wear them or put them in my carry-on. It can get really messy with me wearing 10 shirts and carrying a stuffed carry-on.

Do you always keep your passport with you? What happens if you lose it?

Yes, I always keep my passport with me everywhere I go, because in some countries it can be a big problem if you don’t have your passport with you. I always keep extra copies of any official documents that I have like my passport, visa, tickets, and any bookings locked in a safe at the hostel.

Have you ever been subjected to theft? What do you do to keep your things safe?

I was robbed in Prague; among all the cities I’ve been to, it’s the worst for theft. I always travel with a cross-bag or a backpack because handbags and shoulder bags can be easily stolen. I never go out with all my money; I only take what I need for the day plus my credit card. Also, I buy a lock for each of my bags.

If the train station or airport does not have baggage storage, where do you leave your belongings for a day of sightseeing?

I book a room at the cheapest hostel I find and I leave my luggage there for the day.

What’s your favorite thing about traveling?

Meeting new people, making new friends, learning new languages, and getting to know more about myself, but what I like the most is learning about different cultures and teaching others about my own culture and country.

How do you do that?

I teach people that Egyptians are not just what the media portrays! I give sessions about Egypt (sometimes even at my hostel) when I am abroad. I met two Polish girls who knew nothing about Egypt, I showed them photos and told them a bit about it, and later they came here to visit and they fell in love with it!

What sets your business apart from a travel agency?

For starters, I hate the idea of travel agencies. I find them to be so expensive, and they usually book touristic hotspots, which do not have the authentic experience and culture that a country has to offer. Also, they do full packages, but people have different interests when they travel. For example, some people might like art, history, museums, while others want more nature-based activities like hiking and exploring. Others might just want to relax by the beach or eat local food, so each plan should be customized based on what the person’s interests really are and what they want to do. This is why I founded Gallivanter Travel as an advising agency, not a travel agency.

The Keto Diet: Everything You Need to Know

by Dr. Randa Ragy, Holistic Nutritionist at Oasis Clinics

Want your body to use up all that stored fat? Here’s one way to do it: The Keto diet. Read on to find out if it’s right for you, but only under medical supervision!

HOW IT STARTED

The Keto diet has been used for centuries to treat people with drug resistant epilepsy.  Today, it’s gaining considerable attention as a weight loss strategy.

This eating plan is all about:

  1. Minimizing your carbs.
  2. Upping your fats to get your body to use the fat stores as your primary form of energy instead of glucose.

THE BENEFITS

  • Rapid weight loss (especially in obesity cases).
  • For patients with type 2 diabetes it controls blood sugar levels in the short term.
  • Lowers levels of triglycerides and raises levels of good HDL cholesterol.
  • Makes you feel satisfied for longer and curbs your cravings.
  • Since you are restricting carbs, your body does not retain water to store it and you lose water weight.
  • Starves some kinds of cancer cells.

WHAT IS KETOSIS?

In about two to seven days of following a Ketogenic eating routine, you go into a metabolic state called ketosis, where your body doesn’t have enough carbs to use for energy so it turns to the stored fat as a primary fuel turning your body into a fat-burning machine. Once you are fully adapted to the Keto diet, fat becomes your body’s fuel source and you are able to use dietary fat and body fat equally.

ATKINS vs. KETO

The Keto diet and Atkins both follow carbohydrate restriction, however there are some differences as follows:

  • In Atkins, you eventually reintroduce healthy carbs like quinoa and fruits, but in Keto carbs are always limited.
  • Atkins may be more sustainable in the long run because it’s not quite as restrictive and doesn’t require you to make sure your body remains in ketosis.
  • As for the carb approach, Atkins allows 20 grams of net carbs and as the diet progresses; the carb amount allowed goes up. On the other hand, Keto counts all carbs—not just the net—and the amount tends to be much lower long-term than that of Atkins.
  • There’s no cap on protein with Atkins, while Keto limits protein to about 20% of your daily calories.
  • In Atkins fats and proteins are fair game while in Keto fat is emphasized.

THE SIDE EFFECTS TO LOOK OUT FOR

  • Get ready for the “Keto flu”. This is a group of flu-like symptoms that you might experience as you get started on the diet for a short period of time till the body adapts to the drastic drop of carb intake. (Transition period ranges between two to six weeks)

TIP! A higher potassium intake may help make the transition to a Ketogenic diet easier.

  • Everyone’s body responds differently to ketosis. While some people are able to produce insulin during ketosis to slow down ketone production and avoid a toxic level, others can’t. Ketosis becomes dangerous when blood turns acidic. To counter this, the body takes calcium away from the bones, which might lead to osteoporosis in the long term.
  • You might experience bad breath characteristic of the organic compounds ketones produce during ketosis.
  • Due to its prolonged restrictions, it’s not a good long-term eating approach as it may lead to potentially dangerous nutritional deficiencies.
  • The Ketogenic diet is low in fiber so constipation is a common problem.
  • Missing on some fruits and grains means you are missing on lots of vitamins and minerals that need to be supplemented.
  • Frequent urination occurs as the kidneys are attempting to excrete the ketones from burning fat, leading to an inevitable loss of electrolytes
  • The Keto diet is a very strict diet, so if you don’t adhere to it fully, it won’t work.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

NOT for those with kidney problems! Since Ketosis could increase acidity in the body, it also increases uric acid, leading to the formation of kidney stones.

NOT for women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, people on certain diabetes medication and insulin, those with a low body mass index (BMI), children, hypoglycemic people, those individuals with gallstones or who have had their gallbladder removed.

It is best that you carry out the diet under medical supervision to get the big picture and with the guide of a nutritionist who will design a well-formulated Ketogenic diet to minimize nutrient deficiencies and monitor any metabolic changes while on the diet.

Allowed foods:

  • Avocado
  • Meat and poultry
  • Fish
  • Olives and olive oil
  • Eggs and butter
  • Coconut oil
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Unsweetened nut milks
  • Plain Greek yoghurt and cheese
  • Unsweetened tea and coffee
  • Non-starchy vegetables
  • Leafy greens
  • Dark chocolate min 70%
  • Berries

Steer clear of:

  • Starch: rice, pasta, bread, potatoes
  • Sugar (including fruits, except berries)
  • Vegetable oils
  • Grains: quinoa, beans
  • Processed foods
  • Starchy vegetables: corn
  • Honey

TIP! Improvise by making cauliflower rice and zucchini noodles.

In my experience, you can stick to the Keto diet for three to six months at the most, noting that you can opt to cycle in and out of the diet throughout the year. Moderation is generally the key to shedding pounds for good, optimizing health, and living a balanced life. Over the long term, a less strict, modified Keto diet can still help promote weight loss in a safe fast way.

Mai Tai Egypt at Guezira Plaza

When you need something a little exotic to liven up your mood, just head across to MaiTa’i. Predominantly Latin American with a bow to a Japanese influence, along with some international favorites as well. Salmon and shrimp feature strongly, along with meat and poultry. The intriguing, creative menu features a strong section of starters, as well as main dishes. Check out the amazing cocktails as well!

Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Sake Marinated Salmon, Poke Salmon Bowl, Ceviche Salmon, Ceviche Shrimp, Crispy Salmon Salad all count as signature dishes.

As soon as charming mixologist Mario had plied us with MaiTa’i and Mango Daquiri cocktails (highly recommended, by the way) to whet our appetites, we launched into a seafood-fest to remember. MAi TAi prides itself on its amazing selection of starters, and quite rightly so. There was no way we could miss out on the signature dishes; Sake Marinated Salmon served with pickled ginger and wasabi, Ceviche Salmon with pickled ginger, avocado, cucumber, black sesame, spring onion, tobiko and citrus-y ponzu dressing, Ceviche Shrimp with the same accompaniments as the Ceviche Salmon and an addition of cherry tomato. That was swiftly followed by Crispy Salmon Salad, a mouth-watering delight of fresh greens, cubes of marinated salmon, tobiko, crunchy panko breadcrumbs and ponzu dressing.

Next came the Poke Salmon Bowl, which also lived up to our expectations. The sushi rice provided the right base for the fresh salmon, avocado, cherry tomato, nori, tobiko, spring onion and ponzu dressing, and we cleaned it up rather quickly. Just in time to delve into the Taquitos Chicken, light wraps encasing tender morsels of chicken, mushroom and mixed peppers with an accompaniment of sour cream, salsa and guacamole. Then, before we had to time to catch our breath we found ourselves munching on Avocado Fries. This was true melt-in-your-mouth pleasure. The flavor and texture of the crumbed avocado contrasted superbly with the tobiko and hot, piquant sriracha dip.

How could we even contemplate a main course? The delightful aspect of the starters was the combination of fresh ingredients, so even though the plates had been filling, there was still room for more. Going for a classic favorite, we shared a perfectly cooked cut of chateaubriand.  It came with oven-roasted baby potatoes, mixed vegetables, avocado salsa and chimichurri sauce. The fresh herby tang of the chimichurri set off the beef to perfection, a pleasant change from heavier creamy sauces found so often. We had switched from cocktails by this stage to the excellent house sangria, which proved to be exceptional. It comes in white, rose or red, and can be ordered by the hand-crafted ceramic glass or in a sharing sized pitcher.

By now, any thoughts of dessert were well gone, but that is something to look forward to on our next visit. Soon, very soon…

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

We would have to check out the decadent sounding desserts. Tiramisu or Orange Crème Brûlée for example.

Beverage options range from soft drinks up to a full bar. The innovative cocktails are a big draw.

Décor & Ambience

Stylish and contemporary, with plenty of greenery to add a tropical feel.  The dramatic use of black and white is accentuated by rich blue velvet banquette seating, and the natural wood of the tables. MaiTa’i is arranged with outdoor seating, well-spaced indoor tables and generous bar seating.

Ambience is extremely welcoming, chic and relaxing. The service is impeccable, which, considering we came only five days into MaiTa’i’s operation, is impressive. We hear that there will be live vocalists at least a couple of times a month, in addition to the DJ who spins tracks from 8 pm each evening. We had an early meal, but still loved the playlist with covers of all our favorite all-time-great tracks.

Clientele mix: 30s upwards. A perfect hub for meeting up with friends.

Price range: Moderate upwards, purely dependent on your selection.
