6 Makeup Hacks by Makeup Artist Jelan Nasr

Makeup HacksHere are every girl’s essential 6 makeup hacks for everyday makeup application. Grab your makeup bag, and let’s glam! By Makeup artist Jelan Nasr

1. Lighter coverage

During cold days, our skin tends to get dry, it can be tough to get a smoother complexion while applying foundation. You can add one or two drops of argan oil (only argan oil) before applying your foundation for a smoother application and a natural glow.

2. Create your own glitter liner

Makeup HacksYou only need two products, eyelash glue, and the glitter color of your choice. Line your eyes with eyelash glue, then with a small angled brush, press the glitter on top and start tapping until you cover the glue line. It’s that simple! makeup hacks

3. Get that sultry smokey eye

You are going to take a black or brown pencil liner. Line the pencil along your lash line then, take a small pointed brush and smudge it with a brown eye shadow to create a smokey effect. Put on your mascara, and voila! You are ready to hit the town.

4. Naturally lifted cheekbones

Start by finding the hollows of your cheekbone. Then with a deep nude contour powder apply it inwards towards your face. The trick is to apply a peachy blush above your contour area to create a lifting effect. Add your highlighter on the high points, instant lifting!

5. Soft, luscious, exfoliated lips

Make a gentle lip scrub using brown cane sugar and honey, and use once a week only. Exfoliating helps buff away any dry skin sitting on your lips, leaving you with a smoother, softer canvas for your lipstick. makeup hacks

6. Melt your pencil liner to help it glide

Creamy makeup products blend better when they’re warmed up. If your kohl eyeliner skips or tugs on your eyelid, or takes multiple coats for a decent color payoff, melt it down slightly before you start applying it. makeup hacks

Hold the tip of your kohl liner over the flame of a lighter until it softens, let it cool for a second then swatch it on your hand to make sure it is not too hot or melted.

9 Makeup Tips that Will Change Your Life

The Renaissance of Pottery in Fayoum

Neil Hewison, author of Fayoum Pottery: Ceramic Arts and Crafts in an Egyptian Oasis shares his love of pottery and Fayoum in his new book, and gives insight on the death and rebirth of the art form, and its appeal to the outside world.

Interview by AUC Press

Pottery making has been a tradition in Egypt for a long time. How well has it survived over the centuries?

Pottery was a key craft in Egypt until the last century, as people relied on pots for cooking, storage, transportation of food and the cooling of water. But plastics, metals, and modern refrigeration have taken over many of those functions, and the demand for pottery has naturally fallen off, leading to a consequently steep decline in production.

Was the Fayoum always a cradle of Egyptian pottery making?

Pottery was made widely across Egypt, not just in Fayoum, and there are still important centers of pottery production in Upper Egypt and in the Delta. But Fayoum has held onto one unique form of the craft that has disappeared, except in the village of al-Nazla, where artisans still practice a skill passed down through the generations of a single family. The hand-forming of spherical water jars known as bukla is done using an ancient hammer-and-anvil technique that goes back centuries.

Are the local techniques of pottery making evolving and are they being influenced by potters from abroad?

In the village of Tunis, which had not been a traditional center of pottery; a pottery school established by two Swiss potters in 1990 has trained several generations many of whom now own workshops. They were trained in shaping, decorating, glazing, and firing clay to make bowls, plates, mugs, teapots, and much more. In al-Nazla, traditional methods are being applied to new forms, as the decline in demand for utilitarian water pots has led to diversification, and potters now make decorative items such as planters and garden lights, using the same hammer-and-anvil technique as they did for the bukla.

Is the art of pottery making in Egypt endangered or seeing a surge of interest?

There seems to be a renaissance of interest in the kind of local, hand-crafted, and unique home and kitchenware produced in Tunis, in a rejection of mass-produced items.

Are there different styles of pottery making in Fayoum? What is Fayoum pottery used for?

Each of the three pottery villages of Fayoum has its own style and techniques: Kom Oshim is known for the huge terracotta planters, popular in the gardens and terraces of hotels and resorts across the country; al-Nazla produces water pots, mixing chopped straw or ash with the clay to make it porous, so that moisture evaporates from the surface, cooling the water inside; and the potters of Tunis make bright, colorful, glazed ware for use or display in the home.

The giant unglazed garden pots of Kom Oshim are often fluted, ribbed, or adorned with floral swags and other flourishes. In Tunis, colorful patterns or lively scenes of rural life, palm trees, donkeys, and village folk are often painted onto the pots before glazing, colored glazes are sometimes used, and sometimes a Japanese raku technique is used for a subtle dark, smoky crackling in the off-white surface of the pot.

What makes Fayoum’s pottery popular abroad?

In an increasingly factory-made and anonymous Western world, people are attracted more and more to hand-made artisanal products, things that you can hold and know they were created by an individual with care and attention. Even if you don’t know who that individual is, it is a human connection.

Putting the Boom into Business with Business Boomers

The tech-driven business world of today moves at a very quick pace, but how to navigate it and still come out on top? Sameh Abdel Fattah, Founder & CTO of Business Boomers brings us up to speed.

How do Business Boomers help startups and newbies in the business world?

Business Boomers is a company that owns zVendo.com, a platform that allows brands and retailers to create their own online store, which provides a point of sales without the need for any technical knowledge, and provides tech services and end services for brands who don’t want to manage this for themselves.

Sometimes it requires activities from the zVendo team, like handling listings and management of the online stores, from carrying out the marketing to managing fulfillment, where products are either in a warehouse managed by the vendor, or from the warehouses of the brand. Business Boomers

It is a tool that saves money, provides know-how and introduces it into the brand or retailer business without having to go through the trial and error and struggle. Startups can start on solid ground, we help them until they either decide to go full-fledged on their own and use only our technology, or pick some of the services to be covered by our team with the rest being done in-house. So yes, it is a useful tool for both brands and retailers.

Have you found that many established successful business owners need help in going digital?

I found that a lot of people need help in this area, as it is a new field. To launch an online presence it would require quite a team of people, all with specific skills, such as IT, graphic design, content administrators, as well as people to handle the actual packing and product distribution etc. It worked.

At one point in time we had over 30 people relying on us to handle their e-commerce, which saved them from the heavy expenses of hiring a full-time team.

In your experience, how effective is having an online presence in boosting revenues?

Having an online presence is a mandate; it is no longer a luxury. It’s a part of what every business should have as an omni-experience. Customers expect to find many channels and to be able to choose the channels they like. Whether they go to a brick-and-mortar store, shop online, order through WhatsApp, website, mobile app.

It really depends on each product, company or brand. However, people expect you to be online. This is no longer something extra, it has become the norm. People will become suspicious and may not deal with you if you don’t have a strong social media and online presence.

Have you noticed a swing towards conducting business online, more than through physical stores?

Definitely, especially after Covid. It was going there, slowly but surely, but it was boosted tenfold by Covid and quarantine. We all saw the transformation, where brands had so many solutions to survive and keep selling to customers. The lockdown period was a very bad time for many brands, and I believe it boosted online business tremendously.

Brands started to work more, and faster, to have an online presence and we saw the adaption by end-users to buying online and paying by credit cards and different product payment methods. For shopping, this grew 6 to 7 fold, and online payments increased by around 3 times as much. Business Boomers

What advice would you give anyone thinking of opening a small business?

There is a lot of advice that should be considered for anyone starting a new business. Most of it should be implemented so you don’t become a business that is ‘planning for failure’. You have to study the product. Selection of the product is very important. You also need to study the market of the product and see who else provides it.

You need to understand your product well, and the market where it is being sold. You need to identify your unique selling points, and what you are adding. These two points must be done even before you start your business.

The other part is cash flow management. No matter how small the business is, the cash must be kept separate and just for the business. It must not be mixed with other things, or with personal finances, and all incoming and outgoing amounts must be recorded. You must be aware of what you spend and what you earn. Business Boomers

Another thing you must pay attention to is images. Both pictures and videos. An online presence makes a huge difference, and it must be studied at every step. Even if you take a picture with a mobile, you need to study it and reference it, read articles and check what others are doing.

You need to make your pictures as appealing as possible, and with videos your message should come across within the first three seconds. People will no longer wait for even ten seconds to decide before focusing. In general, attractive content is very important. Descriptions should be given clearly and in detail, so the customer isn’t forced to go through the hassle of sending a message or calling or having to go onto the website to get it.

The product return or exchange policy should also be clearly stated, so you don’t risk facing negative publicity from any case of customer dissatisfaction. This could kill a brand, right from the beginning. With online stores all this information should be included in the confirmation. After sales service and customer experience are extremely important, no matter how small the business is.

What are the hot new business trends at present?

AI is already established, and ML (Machine Learning) and AR (Augmented Reality) are proving useful in allowing customers to benefit from a virtual reality experience when seeing how a product may look or function. Tailored product recommendations are generated through these as well, based on information gathered. Business Boomers

Data analytics is valuable as well, allowing a brand to add more stock of a specific product, or to change a product to meet customer preferences. While there are new topics and trends flowing on a daily basis, these are the most important trends currently entering the market.

Eclipses? Bring them on. Retrogrades? Yep, we know there are quite a few coming up. Planets entering new signs? That sounds fine by us. In short, Universe, after the past couple of years of turmoil and tribulations, we can embrace whatever you deliver.

By Maeri Frances

P.S. Don’t forget to read your rising sign as well if you know it.

January Birthdays: 2nd January – Cuba Gooding Jnr. (actor), 3rd January – Mel Gibson (actor), 5th January – Bradley Cooper (actor), 7th January – Nicolas Cage (actor), 10th January – Rod Stewart (musician), 13th January – Orlando Bloom (actor), 17th January – Jim Carrey (actor), 18th January – Kevin Costner (actor), 19th January –Dolly Parton (singer), 25th January – Alicia Keys (singer), 26th January – Ellen DeGeneres (TV personality), 29th January – Oprah Winfrey (writer, TV personality).

Happy birthday, Capricorn!

All that glitters is not gold. jan 2022 horoscopes

The first few days of the month open with vistas of amazing opportunities and good times ahead. Feel jubilant, and put some solid financial plans in place while you can. But, dear Capricorn, please keep your feet on the ground. Venus in your sign heralds good times, but being retrograde, she may not always deliver the goods. Avoid financial decisions, especially in the second half of January.

Aries: Career strides are possible.

Be on the ball around the 8th and 9th of the month, you will need to think fast and move even faster as opportunities could come flying from all directions. Consolidate your position in gains made, as they could disintegrate unless you have taken care of all the details. Try not to expect too much from friends, they may be tangled up in circumstances that need all their time and attention.

Taurus: Expand your knowledge base.

Use the first two months of January to set your career plans in action, as Mercury goes retrograde on the 14th and things may stall out a little. Use that time to go over what you have already done, refine it and define it. This is great month to learn more about a subject that interests you, or to communicate with people from a different culture. Make this a year in which you embrace new beginnings, change isn’t always a negative.

Gemini: Unshackle yourself, if you can.

Obligations and responsibilities are part of the big picture, and as a Gemini, you value freedom above most things. You may have dug yourself into a hole in the past year, financially, at least; so before you can spread your wings and fly freely again, you need to address the bottom line. The good news is, with Jupiter revisiting your career sector, work matters are due for a boost.

Cancer: Relationships…

If you can’t live with ‘em and can’t live without ‘em, then you need to sit down and have a serious talk with yourself. Planets in Capricorn over the past year have been playing with your head a bit when it comes to commitment, either in a business partnership or something more romantic. It should all become a bit easier now that Jupiter has waltzed back into your 9th house, harmonizing with your Sun sign and stopping you sweating the small stuff. jan 2022 horoscopes

Leo: Health and wealth.

It’s been a bit of a slog in health matters, with Capricorn planets dishing out stern messages over the past months. Give yourself a break from fretting and console yourself with Jupiter’s entry into Pisces. Long overdue debts may be repaid in the coming period, and joint investments may suddenly start to bear fruit. Do be cautious in close relationships from the 14th onwards. Something you say may be taken the wrong way, and it could take time to patch things up.

Virgo: Stop playing it cool and let people get a little closer.

Venus retrograde in your solar 5th house until the 29th of January may prompt you to look at what excites you, stirs your affections and captivates your heart. How do you spend your leisure moments? Now is the time to do a rethink, and pledge to be truly more productive and creative. With Jupiter in your relationship sector, it really is time you opened up to a bit more ‘togetherness’ as well.

Libra: Who said work couldn’t be fun?

While family and domestic matters may not deliver quite as much as you had hoped for, your health and work routine are both set to receive a boost from benevolent Jupiter. This is a great month to make resolutions and a commitment to a healthier lifestyle. Try not to let family responsibilities interfere with your career goals, stay focused and set a workable routine.

Scorpio: Give your brain a rest and relax a bit more.

This past year may see you ready to disengage a bit. A deluge of emails, messages and incessant communication may have worn you down. Turn off the computer and mobile when you find a chance, and allow yourself some creative playtime. Take up a hobby, learn an instrument, try a new sport, paint a masterpiece or two. In fact, anything that helps you tap into your sense of fun will do you the world of good. jan 2022 horoscopes

Sagittarius: Stick to a budget.

Money woes are still to the fore as you enter a new year. Some things just don’t change. Tough as it may be, try to reduce expenditure to match your income. That being said, family life looks to be entering a calmer and more enjoyable phase. There could be news about a move to a more comfortable home, or even a new member joining the family, making it an exciting month.

Aquarius: If it isn’t broken, don’t try to fix it!

Perfection is hard to attain, so why not relax into 2022 and put things that are bothering you on a back burner. You may not be feeling overly sociable, so don’t feel guilty about carving out some ‘me’ time to catch up on some well-earned rest. Then you will have the energy to tackle outstanding tasks. Watch out for Mercury retrograde after the 14th, keep your tech in good working order and check your car maintenance.

Pisces: Fair-weather friends?

Your good nature and kindness can make you a target for anyone who needs a shoulder to cry on, but hey, who is there when you could do with a little comforting and support. Get a little tough this January and think long and hard about who is really there for you, come rain, come snow. No need to feel cynical or depressed, this is more about sorting out the wheat from the chaff. At the end of the day you will see that there are plenty of people out there who adore you! jan 2022 horoscopes
