7 Egyptian Life Hacks That the World Should Adopt

January 18, 2022
Egyptian Life Hacks

When we are not busy jumping on the latest trends from the West, we could take the time to look at time-honored practices from the Egyptian culture that the rest of the world could learn from. Egyptian Life Hacks

1. Baksheesh – or tips of all sizes

When wages and payment for small services can be a mere pittance, the habit of tipping can make all the difference for many. Sometimes a ritual gesture, a larger tip can also show appreciation when someone goes out their way to go the extra mile when doing their job.

2. Family comes first.

Egyptian culture has deep traditional roots, and respect for the family, close, extended and extra-extended, plays a big role in this.

Egyptian Life HacksFamily mealtimes are important, especially on weekends and on special occasions. This gives everyone a chance to catch up, offer unsolicited advice and opinions, and search for solutions. It saves on therapist and lawyers’ fees at least.

3. Kids can live at home until they marry

No self-respecting Egyptian family would dream of kicking their fledglings out of the nest until they marry and make a home of their own. Hey, guys can often even bring their new brides home to join the family unit. Maybe that is why ‘empty nest syndrome’ is such a rarity in Egypt.

Egyptian Life Hacks

4. Women can keep their own family name

Historically, in many societies, women were seen as little more than acquired possessions and fell under the patronage of their husbands. Taking the husband’s family name further cemented the custom.

This is not the case in Egypt and other predominately Islamic countries, where a woman is part of her father’s direct lineage and keeps her birth name. Patriarchy rules!

5. Gameya – or informal credit associations

A tradition dating back over 2,000 years, the gameya has played a big role in the informal economy. While setting up a bank or savings account can be full of hurdles, the gathering of a group of friends, colleagues, relatives, neighbors, cousins of neighbors and anyone else deemed credit-worthy to all put an agreed monthly amount into a pool is based on group consensus and trust.

Egyptian Life HacksEach month the accrued amount is given to one member of the group, based on an agreed rota system. No bank fees and it helps to boost community spirit.

6. ‘Boatmen’ invitations- or 3ozomet marakbiya

Good manners usually mean that hospitality or a convivial acquaintanceship should be acknowledged by issuing an invitation to visit or an offer to pick up the tab. While this may be taken at face value in other societies, in Egypt it is often understood to be a lip-service courtesy. Egyptian Life Hacks

The expression derives from Egyptian generosity, which amounts to someone on a boat inviting a friend on the shore for tea, knowing it is impossible for him to join, making it a convenient way of fulfilling a social nicety without the burden of it coming to fruition.

7. IBM – Insha’Allah, Bokra, Malesh

In our high speed, tech-dependent lifestyles we expect everything to work like clockwork. Our collective OCDC mindset is losing the ability to just go with the flow. Egypt still has a valuable life lesson to offer anyone who needs to learn to reset their priorities and chill a little. God willing, tomorrow and never mind. Egyptian Life Hacks

A Dive into Winnie the Pooh and its Hidden Meanings

January 18, 2022

If you take a closer look, life at the Hundred Acre Woods might not be as happy as it seems. Home to Winnie The Pooh and his bestest of friends, Piglet, Tiger, Rabbit, and Eeyore, the Hundred Acre Woods was inspired by its writer A.A. Milne’s real and not so calm life. Well, in some way. Winnie the Pooh

Underneath the happy-go-lucky story and cheerful characters, a lot of theories surfaced, all pointing out mental health disorders and illnesses that are left untreated and undiagnosed. Some resembled fan fiction, but not to the extent of Twilight‘s reimagined Life and Death story, while others held a lot of weight with scientific research.

In 2000, pediatrician and Ph.D. holder Sarah Shea and her team of pediatricians released a journal titled “Pathology in the Hundred Acre Wood: a neurodevelopmental perspective on A.A. Milne.” In easier terms, it proposed that each of the Winnie-the-Pooh characters displayed symptoms of a different mental disorder.

Stunned by the paper at first, readers seemed to agree with Dr. Shea’s theory, especially after knowing more about the author who came up with the life at the Hundred Acre Woods. If you rematch the movies or re-read the books now, as an adult, you might be able to see it too.Winnie the Pooh

A.A. Milne was a war veteran who has participated in and survived two world wars. Coming back from the war, he was never the same. Suffering from post-traumatic stress, the author left the city for a calm life in the outskirts where he wrote his famous children’s books and had a turbulent relationship with his only son, Christopher Robin.

Ph.D. Valentine Stoycheva from Psychology Today analyzed his books as “a creative way of talking about his struggles and those of many other individuals affected by trauma.”

Pooh Bear is starting to sound pretty gloomy now, right?

But the story of Pooh is far from it, and so are the studies around its mental health diagnostics. The books tackle life and friendship in a way that is reassuring to every child.

The Winnie the Pooh books teach children about love, forgiveness, patience, trust, and acceptance. Even if they are subtly full of mental health undiagnosed issues, they normalize them and remove the stigmas that today’s society has enforced around them.

So what are the proposed diagnosis for each character?

Winnie the Pooh: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Piglet: Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Tigger: Recurring Pattern of Risk-Taking Behaviours

Rabbit: Possible NarcissismWinnie the Pooh

Eeyore: Dysthymia- or ‘Persistent Depressive Disorder’Winnie the Pooh

Owl: Dyslexia

Roo: AutismWinnie the Pooh

Kanga: Social Anxiety Disorder

How To Actually Agree To Disagree

January 18, 2022
Agree To Disagree

You, me, and everyone around us all have our own and sometimes different opinions on all matters of life. And so, it’s inevitable that we will run into situations where we are faced with opposing opinions to our own, and debates or discussions where we try to deliver our points of view are bound to happen. Agree To Disagree

So knowing how to disagree gracefully is definitely one of the most important people skills to have! Disagreeing should never result in fights, grudges, or the ruining of relationships.

When we realize how important it actually is to have different opinions, we’ll also realize why it’s important to know how to listen to views that differ from yours, and how we can deliver a point without conflict. There are many things you can try and implement in your next discussion with someone who disagrees with you. Agree To Disagree

By Farah ElAbd

Make sure they feel heard

A major reason why the person in front of you can become more aggressive when you both disagree while you’re having your discussion is that they feel that you’re not actually listening to them.

Agree To DisagreeMake sure to validate their point of view during the conversation even if you don’t necessarily agree with it. This shows that you respect that person’s perspective despite not agreeing with it, and it also makes it much easier for them to understand your point of view once they see that you heard their side.

Do not get personal

Unless we’re talking about a personal argument by nature like a disagreement with your partner or family member, there is no need to get personal while disagreeing with someone; especially if in a professional setting.

Do not make any personal comments about the person in front of you, and do not let your feelings control what you need to say instead of using logic. Focus on finding the right phrasing and words to convey why you disagree with the person in front of you without hurting their feelings, while also standing your ground.

Find common ground

Having more difficult conversations with opposing points of view and debates is extremely important for us; they broaden our perspective, help us see new angles, and can lead to more productivity in the workplace. Agree To Disagree

Your goal in these conversations should be to understand and learn, and not to ‘win’, and you’ll be able to do that when you look for a common point of agreement instead of focusing on what you disagree on.

Truly listen to the person in front of you to find which point of theirs makes sense, or maybe there’ll be a new angle you hadn’t thought of, so acknowledge that.

Focus on facts

The strongest arguments are always the ones that rely on facts instead of opinions, and although it can be difficult to stick by that in the heat of an argument, it’s critical to remember that logic wins over emotion in a disagreement.

Of course you can be passionate about your point of view, but your passion should be held at bay and not allow you to become too emotional to correctly communicate your perspective.

Your main efforts should be placed on emphasising the reasoning behind the point of view you’re trying to express to the other person, rather than how you feel about that point of view. Agree To Disagree

Remember that while it’s important to have the freedom to voice your opinion, it’s equally as important to know how to remain respectful and considerate while doing so!

Why Daily Shampooing Is Destroying Your Hair

January 18, 2022
daily shampooing

There are so many factors why shampooing your hair every day should not be an option. Whether your hair is thin, fine, curly or thick, over-washing your hair can cause a lot of damage that you might not be aware of. daily shampooing

We have done our research and are bringing you some hard facts.

Picking the Correct Shampoo

We all have different hair types, therefore, picking the appropriate shampoo for your hair makes a huge difference in how your hair looks and feels. Shampoo often contains chemicals called surfactants that help in the cleaning process by removing debris from the surface of the scalp and hair.

daily shampooingA big exclamation mark in the ingredients is sulfate, which produces a rich lather to clean the scalp thoroughly and eliminate excess oil. However, in the long run, it does the complete opposite. daily shampooing

Over Shampooing Leads to Hair Fall

It is not just the fact that you are washing your hair, it may be that the shampoo you are using is incorrect for your hair type.
