It takes skill and proficiency to make a good doctor, but it takes social finesse and compassion along with impeccable technical skill sets to make a great doctor. At schools of Medicine, doctors learn to use evidence-based medicine, which entails using the most up-to-date scientific research data and algorithms as guidelines in their treatments. But does all the data generated from clinical research fit all the patients? The answer is resounding“no!”
‘Art of Medicine’considers the importance of understanding that every patient has different circumstances and that not all patients experience the treatment journey with similar thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. This necessitates a need for individualized (personalized) treatment plans that should encompass the unique situation of each patient.
Healthcare now is directed towards patient-centered care, which encourages the active collaboration and shared decision-making between doctors, patients, and their families (when appropriate) to ensure that decisions respect patients’ needs and preferences not only from a clinical perspective, but also from emotional, mental, spiritual, social, and financial perspectives.
Unlike evidence-based medicine, doctors do not learn the ‘Art of Medicine’ in a classroom; they learn it by seeing patients, one by one, year after year.
The ‘Art of medicine’ inpatient care involves several components:
Showing honest concern and compassion. Compassion should not be mistaken for pity or commiseration. It should be an essential quality in optimal medical care. In the absence of compassion, patients are dissatisfied while doctors lose meaning and gratification in their work.
Giving patients time- not rushing in and out of the examination room, being patient with them and having great bedside manners.
Listening actively-the best thing doctors can offer their patients is a listening ear. Despite their workloads, doctors should find the time and capacity to truly listen to patients and hear their stories. This builds a strong doctor-patient relationship, which increases the chances of favorable treatment outcomes. Medicine that does not make time for active listening poses real risks. Doctors may mistakenly provide ineffective or undesired treatment, or miss pertinent information.
Understanding that every patient is an individual who has individual circumstances that affect their lives.
Helping patients acquire the best outcome they can for themselves by working with them, educating them, coming up with a mutually agreed upon plan of action.

Things may just be in the planning stage, but you could be looking at a major redecoration or move, even to a new location.
Aries
January in a Nutshell: It’s time for change! The old status quo just doesn’t work for you these days. Rethink your approach to career, relationships, and domestic life and convince everyone to fit in with your new approach. Let’s face it, you can be very motivating. Get ready for sparks to start flying!
Taurus
January in a Nutshell: Get ready for a shake-up. You aren’t the person you were this time last year, and nothing can turn back the clock. Your core belief system has changed and you will soon need to be ready to adapt your lifestyle to fit.
Gemini
January in a Nutshell: Ready for a bit of romance? Singles have been patient long enough, and now the time seems ripe to meet someone who could play a role in your life. Don’t turn down social invitations, there are new faces just waiting to meet you.
Cancer
January in a Nutshell: Decisions, decisions. You are being pulled in several directions at once. Career matters are looking good, so any changes should be positive. The travel bug is also nibbling at you, but a relationship may be affecting your decision. Take a deep breath and get your priorities sorted.
Leo
January in a Nutshell:Travel on the horizon? Feeling restless? Maybe a change of pace, and faces, is just what you need. Health issues may be getting you down, so bite the bullet and get them sorted. Your mental attitude may go through a major shift this month.
Aquarius
January in a Nutshell: Are you being your own worst enemy? It may be hard to shake off a sense of unease and doom, but a lot of your problems may rest with your unwillingness to be proactive these days. Think outside of the box and solutions may pop up out of nowhere. Friends can be an energy boost, go with the flow and get into the mood.
Virgo
January in a Nutshell: Denial is not your friend. This month brings a lot of issues clearly under the spotlight. If there is clutter in your life, now is the time for a clean out. That means junk, toxic people, bad habits and anything holding you back from a great year ahead. The time is now!
Pisces
January in a Nutshell: Get entrepreneurial. Inspiration can come easily to Pisces, so don’t let naysayers get you down. Take that idea and run with it. It could be a money-maker. This is a time where you can look at lessons learned, and use that wisdom in making a new start. Don’t play the blame game, just turn the page.
Libra
January in a Nutshell: Love-all or ‘game over’. Relationships may be put to the test; anything that has outworn its authenticity may come to an end. New attractions are equally likely, but may be short-lived. Home matters need attention, family members could be making demands on your time and energy.
Sagittarius
January in a Nutshell: You are on a creative roll! Things are finally going your way, and doors are opening in all directions. The money may not be flooding in yet, but you should be able to smell it coming. Hard work and patience will pay off, so don’t be tempted by quick-and-easy solutions.
Scorpio
January in a Nutshell: Say it like it is. You are one of life’s realists, but still not above a little manipulation to get things your way. This is the time to say what needs to be said as clearly as possible, otherwise a situation may just drag on and become more draining for all involved.

First things first, it’s pronounced free-kah. And, in short, it’s wheat! According to legend, freekeh originated by accident when an ancient Middle Eastern village was attacked and their young wheat fields were set ablaze. In attempts to salvage their crops, the villagers rubbed away the burnt chaff and found that the roasted kernels inside were delicious! Since that time, freekeh (which literally means, “to rub”) became a mainstay of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine. Itis a wheat product, and therefore contains gluten.
Yes, freekeh contains gluten—but the time in the plants development stage when the wheat is harvested and processed allows for gluten to be denatured. Some people find that freekeh has fewer side effects than other wheat products; however, keep in mind that freekeh still contains gluten.
Is freekeh a healthy option?
Freekeh is low in fat and high in protein and fiber. Serving for serving, freekeh has more protein and twice as much fiber as quinoa. (A 42g serving of freekeh has six grams of fiber and six grams of protein, versus quinoa’s three and five-and-a-half, respectively.) This means freekehkeeps you feeling full long after you’ve eaten it, so it’s a smart option for anyone focused on weight loss.
Ingredients
1 cup cracked freekeh
1/2 a small red onion, finely diced (about 1/2 cup)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
Juice of 1 medium lemon (about 2 tablespoons)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
Add nuts (optional)
Directions
Add 8 cups water and the freekeh to a medium saucepan and boil until tender, about 20 minutes. Strain.
Meanwhile, soak the onions in ice water in a small bowl for 10 minutes. Strain well.
Whisk together the onions, basil, dill, parsley, oil, 1 tablespoon of the lemon juice, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper in a large bowl. Add the cooked freekahand toss to coat. Season with salt and pepper if needed. Transfer to a serving bowl and add the remaining 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Add nuts according to your preference. Serve as a side dish with grilled chicken or mixed grill.

This popular Sheikh Zayed eatery has just opened a new branch in Zamalek, and locals have wasted no time in getting acquainted. We enjoyed a leisurely mid-week dinner, and found it packed.
Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled
Sushi, sashimi, nigiri and other Japanese specialties, pizza, and a strong International selection is all available at Arigato. The signature dishes here are no doubt the excellent, reasonably-priced sushi which is a big draw, and the pizza and salads are also exceptional.
Coming in from the cool, crisp air of early winter, our thoughts immediately went to soup as a warm-up. And, heat us up it certainly did. The Pirikara Tom Yum based soup we shared delivered a fiery blast, and came redolent of ginger and lemongrass and packed with juicy shrimp and mushrooms. It made a good prelude to the Crème de Volaille and Bisque Seafood Soup which followed. The salads looked too yummy to skip so we went for the Beet Salad, the Arigatos Salad and Chicken Caesar Salad. They each had a creative mix of ingredients, from palm heart, rocca, avocado and endive to pistachio and pesto. The dressings, which are a well-kept secret, were all superb and we would order any of these salads again in a heartbeat.
We grazed our way through beautifully presented platters of sushi, nigiri and sashimi, then went on to huge konafa-wrapped fried shrimp, crunchy fried salmon and dainty spring rolls. Everything met with approval, and the sashimi was amazingly fresh, a big plus for seafood fans. By the time our main dishes arrived, we were feeling quite challenged, as the portions were really generous.
Our Pepi Ferdi Fillet came with a rich pepper sauce, the likes of which are hard to find these days. Perfect wedge potatoes and sautéed seasonal vegetables made it easy to mop up every drop. The Bemme Femme came in a huge clam shell and was a mix of shrimp, mushroom and calamari in rich, creamy, cheese-topped béchamel. There was an indulgent retro feel to these dishes, a to-hell-with-counting-calories mood soon took over.
Rounding things off with a totally authentic thin-crust Quattro Stagioni pizza that took us straight to the heart of Napoli, we were settling comfortably back to muster strength to head home when two decadent desserts landed on the table. What’s not to resist about Sweet Potato Glacé with a scoop of homemade ice-cream? Or a massive slice of chocolate cookie cake stuffed with Nutella? Washed down with a great cappuccino, they sealed the evening as one to remember.
Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available
The menu is extensive. With so many choices, where to start? Beverage options include fresh juices, soft drinks and hot beverages.
Décor & Ambience
The décor is neutral, with white brick walls, beige leather seating and dark polished wooden tables. The walls have attractive hand-painted scenes of Japan to add a splash of color. The atmosphere on our visit was cosy, and we got caught up in an early Christmas mood with the selection of classic Christmas carols and songs on the playlist.
Clientele mix: Mainly couples and groups of friends.

Seafood at its best, a true harvest from the sea. Everything we tried at Salamanka was excellent, but in keeping with the restaurant’s authenticity, the day’s catch is laid out on a huge bed of ice, allowing you to select what you fancy. Go with that!
Dishes Sampled
The first job was to select our fish, so we could enjoy a range of mezze while they were grilling. It all looked amazingly fresh, but we went for bouri and sea bream, along with a platter of the hugest shrimp imaginable. We soon made short work of our basket of assorted bread; dunking into taramasalata, tahina and babaghanoush with abandon. We were also in need of something to warm us up after the chilly evening air we had just escaped, and the Seafood Soup did the trick. The rich broth had depth of flavor and was packed with shrimp, calamari and fish, making it almost a meal in itself.
When the stars of the show arrived we were ready though. The shrimp came sizzling hot and when the foil was drawn back, the aroma they released was pure heaven. The seasoning and light addition of onion complemented the flavor, allowing the natural taste and freshness to shine. The fish came whole, but the expert de-boning and serving by the manager saved us the tricky task of doing this ourselves. Both fish were excellent, and worked well with the fresh salad and Sayadeya rice that accompanied them.
With just a tiny space left for dessert, we shared bowls of mahalabeya, rice pudding and bright crimson jelly. So traditional, and sooo good!
Other Menu Options that Appealed
We would happily do the same again, but agreed that the appetizers, tajin and pasta dishes also looked inviting.
Beverage Options
Fresh juices and soft drinks, as well as hot beverages. The Lemon with Mint we tried was excellent.
Décor & Ambience
The traditional blue and white palette of Salamanka is offset with splashes of pale grey and tan, keeping the seaside feel, but adding a contemporary twist. There is a mix of indoor and outdoor seating and the atmosphere is convivial, with attentive service. There are two large flat screens strategically placed for anyone wanting to catch the match of the day, but they do not impose on the atmosphere.
Clientele mix: All ages, families, couples and groups of friends.
Price range: Moderate, but it depends on your selection of course.
Worth knowing: Salamanka offers delivery to the neighboring area, as well as takeaway.
