6 Ways to Get Mindful About Nutrition

Small consistent steps to taking control of your health!

Each new year is a fresh opportunity to get your health and eating habits on track, why should this year be any different? We sat down with Ahmed Hesham, a personal trainer and certified nutritionist at UFC Gym in Sheikh Zayed, to learn the nutrition and lifestyle adjustments he recommends for his clients. Hesham is passionate about helping others achieve their health and fitness goals, helping and guiding people to become the best versions of themselves through nutrition and fitness. Interested in improving your overall health and nutrition intake? Read on!

CWM: Through your work in nutrition, what do you find the biggest misconceptions people have about proper intake?

The two biggest misconceptions I hear from my clients are, “Eating at night will make you gain weight,” and “weight loss equals fat loss”. With regards to the first, eating at night will not make you gain weight. Nighttime meals will make you gain weight only if you exceed the amount of calories your body needs in order to maintain your weight. Anything less than your required calorie intake, you will actually lose weight. Anything over your required calorie intake, you will gain weight.

As for the second misconception, it is also not true. If you suffered an accident and spent two weeks on a hospital bed, you will lose weight, but most of it will be from your muscle mass, not necessarily fat. A person needs to move and function well in order to aide the aging process, you want to get into better shape and preserve your muscle mass. Having a toned body and agility is important to retain muscle mass, so losing weight quickly by means of crash diets and not working out is wrong on so many different levels because it cuts into our muscle mass.

How can bad nutrition contribute to common health problems we witness every day in our social circles?

An imbalanced and unhealthy nutritional intake can contribute to diseases and fatal conditions in several ways. For example, diets that are high in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol can raise a person’s blood cholesterol levels and increase their chances of having a stroke. Diets that are high in sodium can also lead to an increase in blood pressure, and foods that contribute to high blood pressure are the biggest dietary risk factor for stroke.

The number one cause of death is cardiovascular and circulatory disease, which can be cured and prevented by diet and lifestyle adjustments. Every time you eat, you could be adding years to your lifetime or subtracting years away. Most chronic diseases are caused or accelerated by unhealthy diets.

Dietary risks were the leading cause of disease in the USA and contributed to more health loss in 2010 than smoking, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar. Diets low in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds and high in sodium, processed meats, and trans fats cause the most premature death and disability.

What is your opinion on diets like Keto Diet, Paleo, or Atkins – can these negatively impact a person’s wellbeing?

Keto, Paleo, and the many other diets work as long as you are in a caloric deficit state – meaning, you are taking in less calories than your body is burning. They work very well at least for a while, until your body catches up and adapts to this system. On a long-term basis, you will have to lower your calories or adjust your diet in other ways to keep making progress.

These diets can be a double-edged weapon, as many of these are restrictive diets such as the Keto diet, which asks the person to cut out fruits, starchy vegetables, and whole grains – all of which many studies have proven to be very good for us. It is better to avoid processed foods for example, because they are loaded with added sugars, sodium, and trans fats that are all proven to be harmful for us.

I recommend that the best diet is what science has proven to be better for us, one that is minimal in processed food and rich in a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nut, seeds, legumes, and lean proteins like chicken and fish.

Your 2019 Checklist of Goals

  • Be persistent, remain consistent, and have willpower and patience! Being mindful of your nutritional intake constitutes a big mental challenge.
  • Small consistent steps are keys to progress. Expect that it will take time and think long-term. Those who try to go from zero to hero in a day usually crash and burn.
  • Planning, planning, planning! Be prepared daily with healthy alternatives to fuel your body. Your fridge, lunch box for work, snacks in the car, need to be loaded with little to no processed foods.
  • Get enough quality sleep, at least 7-9 hours a night.
  • Try to get in some exercise daily at different intensities to keep your body guessing.
  • Hydrate! Drink enough water, many people don’t do that and it is essential for a well-functioning body.

8 Instagram Accounts to Inspire You

If you’re into art and like to stay updated with whatever is happening today in the art scene, here are 8 Instagram accounts with impressive and inspiring daily posts that will blow your mind away.

Tips & Insights on Owning, Caring for & Hanging Art

ArtsMart Gallery

Lina Mowafy, director of ArtsMart Gallery offers her tips for selecting artwork to enhance your space:

  • When purchasing art, choose artwork that speaks to you and that you can connect with. Whatever you decide to buy for your space, be it your office or your home; it should emit positivity and feed you good emotions.
  • If you are unsure that a piece you are attracted to will work in a space, a “Try Before You Buy” service is your best bet. You can always use an art advisory service from the gallery you are dealing with.
  • The best way to become familiar with the work of up-and-coming artists is to always keep up to date with galleries, subscribe to newsletters and follow them online to receive latest news and learn of upcoming exhibitions and events.

ArtTalks

Cherine Chafik, gallery director and curator of ArtTalks shares deep art scene insight. While Fatenn Kanafani – Owner and Founder of ArtTalks gives tips on the placement of art in the home.

Art as a dynamic form of expression

Some critics foretell ‘the death of painting’, as art today responds to a global environment that is culturally diverse and technologically advancing. Contemporary art is multifaceted and defies easy definition by challenging traditional boundaries. The majority of Egyptian artists work in a globally influenced, culturally diverse, and technologically advancing world. Nevertheless, their work encompasses a broad range of traditional and experimental media, mainly oil with dynamic combination of materials, methods, concepts, and subjects. – Cherine Chafik.

Cherine’s Tips for Hanging Artwork:

  • Perfect placement of a painting is something of the past. The most interesting wall arrangements are unexpected and creative. Some artworks can rest leaning on the wall or over a console without hanging.
  • Large walls don’t always call for a large piece of artwork.
  • As a general rule the center point of the piece or grouping should be at approximately eye level, but that doesn’t mean you cannot hang one closer to the ground or way above a door if you have a high ceiling.
  • Artwork need not be perfectly centered: Although symmetrical hanging is a visually appealing norm of the past, now scattered arrangements can be playful and chic.
  • Perfect for a hallway or sofa wall, hanging paintings or photography horizontally allows you to achieve some volume without appearing crowded.
  • If you have two larger pieces, try staggering them by hanging one lower than the other, so that top and bottom don’t match.
  • No matter what scenario you choose, bear in mind to give space around the artwork to breathe.

Fatenn’s Tips for Hanging Artwork

  • If the house is rich with art, then I would go to the extreme and place many paintings on one wall, starting with a central big piece and surrounding it with smaller ones on the sides and top.
  • Small pieces can transform a wall, if placed together. Hanging them close to each other should be about telling a story, pleasing to the eye.

SafarKhan Art Gallery

Mona Said shares her knowledge as curator and co-owner of SafarKhan Art Gallery, a leading gallery in the local art scene since 1968.

Caring for artwork

The most important point is that you should hang it, not wrap it in plastic and place it in storage. Canvases should not be stored rolled up, of course. Paintings should be placed away from direct sunlight, and kept clean and dust-free. There are very soft dusters that have been made especially for artwork.  This means that the back should be checked regularly as well, to ensure that the wood is sound and has not been affected by anything.

Frames and mountings

A good piece of artwork will stand in its own right, so we should never depend on the frame to embellish it. However, there are specific types of mountings and framing that are commonly used for various types of painting. Watercolors, pastels, lithographs and drawings are best framed with glass to protect them. The only art that should be hung without glass is oil or acrylic, either on canvas or wood. Sometimes it is preferred to use glass when an oil painting has been done on paper, as it can be torn more easily.

When something no longer works in your collection

When you buy a piece it is important to select something that has the potential to be something in the future. If you do not want a piece you may be able to exchange it or return it to the gallery where you purchased it, if not, there are well-known antique dealers in the downtown and Zamalek areas who deal in paintings. Alternatively you could make a gift of it, to friends or family. But really, you should purchase art initially with the guideline of it being a good investment, looking at big-name artists or up-and-coming artists that are garnering attention.

Paint, Dance and Play Your Way to Wellness

Crafts, art and dancing at home can be very beenficial for your mental, physical and emotional health. When conventional treatments and medications leave gaps in the road to mental and emotional health, the use of art in all its forms can step in and change the picture. Heightening the senses, encouraging free expression and offering hours of fulfilment, art therapy is making inroads into the way medical professionals help their patients. Who better to bring us up to date than Psychotherapist and Expressive Arts Therapist Suzan Radwan?

CWM: What forms does expressive arts therapy embrace?
SR: We have visual arts, music therapy, drama therapy, storytelling, creative writing and dance and movement therapy. There are other forms, but these are really the main categories for expressive therapies. With visual art therapy we have painting, drawing, clay work and sculpture, collages and anything involving crafts like knitting. The application of art therapy began a long time ago; the psychoanalytical school first pioneered image analysis and to this day there are universities and institutes, mainly in Europe, that follow this approach.
Cognitive –Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has used various art forms in its techniques and treatments, including those for recovering addicts, but today’s trend is towards the humanistic school, as taught by the Prairie Institute of Expressive Arts Therapy in Canada, where the artistic process and the client’s own reflections on it are the main focus.

5 Benefits of Art Therapy

  • There is a reduced likelihood of a person creating diversions as in talk therapy, as art therapy gets to the point. Even though the focus is on the process, often we see a person’s artistic skills develop during therapy sessions.
  • They create a space for the client or patient to move in comfortably, without having to talk about things they do not want to discuss or are not ready to face. It is less confrontational or invasive. Talk therapy can sometimes regenerate the trauma, so it can be negative and draining.
  • Art therapy sessions are more cathartic and energizing, they play a lot more on the imagination, creating what is known in art therapy as an ‘alternative world’ experience
  • A basic principle in art therapy is ‘play’, so it is a lot more fun than traditional sessions.
  • Compared to other forms of clinical psychotherapy, talk therapy, coaching and counseling, art therapy is much more organic, spontaneous and natural.

What results have been observed in the various forms of art therapy? Music therapy has been one of the easiest forms to track results in, there is a lot of evidence based material to support this. Results even go so far as to indicate improvement in the immunity system through expressive arts therapy. Data shows that therapists using expressive arts come to a quicker and often more satisfactory resolution with their patients than those depending exclusively on talk therapy. In the case of recovering addicts, it has been helpful in prognosis, as well as anticipating any relapses.
How is art therapy currently being integrated into the medical/well-being system in Egypt? Currently, I am working with children in the Children’s Cancer Hospital.
The hospital has been compiling cases for the last five years, in the hopes of doing a study and publishing a paper with their findings and now a whole department has been set up for this.
Art therapy is part of the treatment program in many local hospitals, mental health clinics and half-way houses. The first Art Therapy post graduate diploma was made available through the College of Art Education in Zamalek.
There is professional training going on in the various clinics, including a Canadian Art Therapy supported program being held at Aboul Azaim Hospital. Looking forward, there are hopes that an Egyptian Association of Art Therapists can be formed, as every culture has its local sensitivities. This way, more training programs can be implemented to broaden the reach of art therapy and its benefits to the community.

Suzan Radwan is an Expressive Art Therapist and Art Psychoanalyst who currently works as an Expressive Arts Therapist and Program Coordinator with the Children’s Cancer Hospital, in addition to running a private art studio in Maadi.

3 Steps for Setting Achievable Goals in 2019

New year, fresh start! If you’ve set yourself a New Year’s resolution (or several), we’re committed to helping you keep it. Michael Hyatt, Leadership Mentor and author of Five Days to Your Best Year Ever, outlined three steps that can help optimistic goal-setters achieve their resolutions and better their lives. But how do you actually fulfill each step? Here are some resources to help you design your best year ever!

CLARITY

“The more clarity you achieve, the more you will find that the universe is on your side, supporting your thoughts and intentions. Therefore, focus on clarity, not on getting results. The results will come according to their own rhythm and timing.” – Deepak Chopra

According to Hyatt, attaining clarity on where you are in life and what needs fixing is the first key step. Effective goals are clear, specific, and based on behavior – not outcomes. Need a jumpstart clearing the deck and focusing? Check some of these resources!

SET MULTI-FACETED GOALS

Good health is multifaceted – it’s physical, it’s internal, it’s my diet, and my emotional state. It’s all tied in together.” – Michelle Obama

Setting goals in only one area of your life will lead to imbalance and hindering your chance for a fully productive and healthy life. According to Hyatt, properly balanced goals should include all facets of life: spiritual, intellectual, emotional, physical, relationships, social life, professional life, hobbies, and financial. Does that seem overwhelming? Check some of these titles to help you on your way!

PLAN OF ACTION

“Our goals can only be reached through a vehicle of a plan, in which we must fervently believe, and upon which we must vigorously act. There is no other route to success.” – Pablo Picasso

Research quoted in the Business Insider and U.S. News states that 80% of New Year’s resolutions fall apart by February. Why? According to Hyatt, the breakdown of goals directly correlates to a lack of a clear and direct plan of action. You won’t be able to achieve your goals without a solid plan with measurable benchmarks.
