Behind the Scenes of Love Story

Behind the Scenes of Love Story

It is no secret that the romantic comedy genre is making a major comeback on the Hollywood circuit, and the Egyptian cinema industry isn’t far behind on trend! Writer/director Osman Abou Laban says audiences shouldn’t expect a cheesy rom-com, this film has heart and a big twist! Hint: the main takeaway is how love can truly be blind. We caught up with Ahmed Hatem, Ola Roshdy, and Abou Laban to find out more about this Valentine’s Day must-see.

The premiere night for Keset Hob proved to be a huge success with a large number of audience. The audience was laughing, crying and clapping throughout the movie while the story developed into one of Egypt’s most romantic/tragic love stories.

Art Trio: 3 Female Talents Join Forces

When three talented artists combine their unique individual styles under one roof, it is worth paying a visit. Currently, works by Al-Assmaa Taki Deen, Laila El Sadda and Mariam Mahdy can be viewed at Nokoush Gallery in Maadi, but plans for a full-fledged exhibition are under way. Cairo West Magazine chatted with Laila El Sadda to learn more about Art Trio.

CWM: How did the three of you meet and discover your shared passion for painting?

LS: I have known Mariam since a very young age, when we started attending painting courses together. Later on, we met Assmaa in a group exhibition, that’s when we realized we had a lot in common. The three of us had similar interests and felt inspired by each other’s work.

How do you see Egypt’s art scene at present?

Egypt’s art scene has developed within the last couple of years. There are many art movements and more artists expressing themselves. Egyptians now appreciate art, visit exhibitions and collect art more than ever. There is more awareness.

What do you have in the pipeline?

We are preparing for an upcoming exhibition featuring a new theme, most probably related to women.

What is the best way for emerging artists to bring their work to the public eye?

Social media has a huge role in connecting people. It’s not enough to have talent and produce work. It needs to be seen, either through exhibitions or social media platforms, to communicate the message intended.

Lokali in Maadi

Already on the foodie radar for its memorable pop-up events, presided over by its four founding partners; Alia, Nada, Chef Maha and Chef Yomna, Lokali offers vegan and vegetarian friendly food in Maadi. Catching it only a few days after its launch, we dropped in for a late lunch.

Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled
The menu is mainly about breakfast items, salads, pizza, sandwiches and burgers, with appetizers, vegan pasta and other main dishes coming soon. The scrambled eggs and omelet dishes are already scoring good reviews, it should be noted. True to Lokali’s ethos, locally sourced, chemical-free ingredients are used in all dishes, and products, including bread, mayo and condiments are made in-house. The focus is on recapturing traditional flavors and produce, with a contemporary twist. Vegans and vegetarians are also well catered for.

Reaching Lokali an hour before closing time, we opted to share a salad to start, with a sandwich and burger to follow. We had just started sipping on our Aswan Hibiscus Iced Tea, (with bio-degradable straws, we were delighted to note) when our Mixed Greens & Strawberry Salad, complete with a selected addition of sous-vide duck breast arrived. It was easily large enough to share, and we loved the play of flavors between the sharp sweetness of the strawberry, the garlic confit and the creamy tang of goat cheese. The honey and cilantro vinaigrette was a perfect match; we would come back again for that alone.

Our Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich and Lokali’s Burger followed a few minutes later, on locally handmade plates. Both portions were substantial, even with our healthy appetites we were challenged to clear our plates. The burger comes with a variety of add-ons, we went for beetroot marmalade and melted cheese. It was a combo made in heaven. Burgers come encased in fresh, buttery, homemade brioche buns, another Lokali touch. The beef patty, also cooked sous-vide before browning, was huge, moist and succulent. Made from a mix of lean local sirloin and brisket, the flavor was exceptional.  The batter-fried chicken with cheese, tomato and gravy came served on a basil and roumi waffle, again in a generous portion. Both dishes were accompanied by crunchy potato wedges with wonderfully fluffy centers. Top marks!

There was really no room left for dessert, but we managed a dainty scoop of homemade peanut butter and eshta ice cream: a nice finishing touch.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

We would love to try out the pasta dishes as soon as they are added to the menu. A visit for breakfast is definitely a plan as well.

The beverage menu is still being prepared; expect to find traditional local drinks, along with coffee and tea.

Décor & Ambience

Lokali is refreshingly informal. It exudes boho chic, both in the compact interior and garden area, with local ethnic elements blending with edgy lighting. Seating is simple but comfortable, with wooden chairs and a rug-covered corner section, which we swiftly headed for. There is a selection of colorful striped blankets available for anyone wanting to ward off the chill of a winter evening, a thoughtful touch. Background music is relaxing and sets a chilled out mood.

Clientele mix: Everyone who enjoys good uncomplicated but imaginative food, and those who are vigilant about the sourcing of local chemical-free produce. Also, lots of young urban professionals looking for downtime relaxation.

Price range: Very reasonable.

Worth noting:
Responsible pet owners, Lokali is a pet- friendly zone!

Lexie’s in Lake House Club, New Cairo

Baky Hospitality has added another star to its’ excellent roster of restaurants in Cairo, and we were eager to scope out their take on modern Italian food in New Cairo. This is one of the few, if any, establishments that offer a complete section of pork dishes – so those in need of a fix, you now know where to go. We visited for a leisurely dinner and left impressed. A return visit is already pencilled in for the fine-dining spot in New cairo!

Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Signature dishes include the Fresh Burrata flown in from Italy, Fresh Homemade Pasta dishes, and the entire Specialita Di Maiale – an imported pork section from Italy comprising of both antipasti and secondi dishes like Spaghetti Carbonara, Cappeliti stuffed with Ricotta cheese and crispy prosciutto and Saltimbocca, a veal cutlet wrapped in prosciutto.

We started our meal with a selection of salads and antipasti – the Fresh Burrata, the Tartufa Bianca pizza, and the Vitello Tonnato Tartare. All of Lexie’s cheeses and many ingredients, including the artisanal Italian Burrata, are flown in weekly directly from Italy to ensure freshness and quality of taste. The Burrata was extremely creamy and delicious, adorned by micro greens and topped with wonderfully potent barrel aged Venturini Baldini Balsamic vinegar pearls. The Vitello Tonnato Tartare arrived seasoned to perfection, imported Dutch veal tartar tossed with a tuna, basil and Parmigiana dressing and freshly baked crostini for spreading. Those not keen on consuming raw meat can rest assured that this is the perfect opportunity to venture astray for a taste, it truly is spectacular. The homemade pizza is a must-try; a combination of light thin crust baked with special Italian flour, Fior Di Latte (fresh milk cream), truffle marinated mushrooms and drizzled with truffle oil. You can judge an Italian restaurant by it’s’ pizza, and Lexie’s wins with flying colors.

On to the main courses, the Scampi Risotto blew us away. A combination of shrimp, sofrito (a spice purée comprising of bell peppers, tomato, cilantro, garlic and onion), cream, basil oil, and pecorino makes this dish unbelievably flavorsome and good till the last bite. The Beef Tagliata also did not disappoint, sliced South African beef tenderloin on a bed of fresh Rocca drizzled with the same winning balsamic vinegar. Tender, juicy and aromatic.

With little room to spare, we tucked into the light and airy Ricotta Cheesecake served with polenta crumble and a scoop of gelato. Lexie’s homemade gelato is to-die-for and comes in a range of innovative flavors such as basil, brown butter, coffee, caramel, chocolate and authentic vanilla bean. A strong cup of Italian coffee was welcome and needed to accompany a rich and tremendous dessert – Viva Italia!

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

Where to begin? Lexie’s menu needs to be sampled in its’ entirety over several visits. The Osso Buco, Asparagus Risotto, and Lexie’s Black Margherita pizza definitely caught our eye.

Beverage options include a full bar along with fresh juices, soft drinks and authentic Italian coffee menu.

Décor & Ambience

The décor is modern and comfortable. Mood lighting, wood accents, bronze inlays, and marble bars and table-tops make Lexie’s interior a sight to behold. Every detail has been taken into consideration, from the crafted dinnerware to the staff uniforms and aprons. The staff is highly trained in providing diners with a truly hospitable service; a rarity in Cairo’s dining scene and much appreciated.

Worth knowing: Lexie’s offers a wide range of delicious cocktails, perfect for an after-work tipple with antipasti. We sampled the Sardinia Cooler and the Passion Fruit Sgroppino – both refreshing with fresh and citrusy notes. DJs arrive later in the evening for some ambience.

Clientele mix: Couples, 30-somethings, the business set, and small family gatherings are all present under one roof.

Price range: Splurge meal, but a treat and well worth the expense given the imported ingredients and carefully crafted menu.

Balancing Hormones Through Nutrition & Lifestyle

We’ve all heard about hormones and how they can affect our mental, physical and emotional health, but what are hormones? They are chemical messengers that travel around your blood stream playing a major role in controlling your appetite, weight, mood, sleep, stress level to name a few. They control every physiological process in the body including metabolism, immune system, menstrual cycle and reproduction.

Normally, our endocrine glands produce the precise amounts of hormones needed to control various processes in our bodies. Hormonal imbalances are caused by a combination of factors such as your diet, medical history, genetics, stress level and exposure to environmental toxins. When you develop hormonal imbalances, you either have too much or too little of a certain hormone which can have a serious impact on your overall system.

In addition, hormone levels fluctuate throughout a lifetime and some hormones naturally decline by age. In a nutshell, hormonal changes affect everyone throughout every stage of life and affect everyone differently as some people experience a more dramatic decline than others. It is also important to note that hormonal changes occur naturally during puberty, pregnancy, breast feeding and menopause.

The good news is that we do have control over environmental factors like diet and lifestyle, which when optimized can ensure a hormonal balance. In women, hormonal changes produce different symptoms like weight gain, thinning hair, hot flashes, acne, mood swings, insomnia, heart palpitations, heavy, irregular or missed periods and a million other things.

Estrogen is the main female sex hormone that naturally declines during menopause. It is cardio protective and it also protects bone mass. Menopausal women can suffer from many symptoms as mentioned earlier due to the natural decline of estrogen levels. These women are sometimes prescribed HRT (hormonal replacement therapy) to augment their estrogen levels. HRT might not be right for every woman going through menopause.

If you are a menopausal woman who is considering HRT as an option, you will have to speak to your doctor to be able to assess your individual needs as the benefits and the risks vary depending on the severity of your hot flashes, bone loss and heart health. Estrogen therapy may increase your cancer risk. In men, if the hormone testosterone is low, it can cause symptoms like infertility, loss of muscle mass, development of breast tissue, fatigue, increased body fat and loss of bone mass and osteoporosis among many other symptoms.

THE NEED-TO-KNOW FACTS

6 Major Factors That Lead to Hormone Imbalance:

  1. Food allergies
  2. Being overweight
  3. Sedentary lifestyle
  4. Exposure to pesticides, toxins, smoking and alcohol
  5. Being under constant stress
  6. Not having enough sleep

The 2 Main Hormones Affected:

Cortisol (the stress hormone): Cortisol is vital to our survival as a fight or flight response, however consistent high levels in the body can lead to high blood pressure and could negatively affect heart health.

Insulin (the blood sugar hormone): When you eat carbohydrates, the pancreas releases insulin to carry the glucose from the blood to your cells where they are used for energy. If you have insulin resistance, your pancreas produces insulin normally, but your cells don’t agree to it causing more insulin to be released in an effort to help transfer glucose from the blood into the cells. Now excess blood sugar builds in your blood leading to diabetes over time. Keeping a balanced diet, maintaining healthy weight, replacing simple white carbs with complex ones as oats, beans and vegetables can protect you from becoming insulin resistant.

Any imbalance in cortisol or insulin, can accordingly have a disrupting effect on other major hormones such as thyroid hormones, which are responsible for metabolism, estrogen, which is the main female sex hormone, progesterone that regulates the body immune system and melatonin that aids in a good night sleep.

7 Ways to Naturally Ensure Hormone Balance:

  • Follow a well-balanced diet without a calorie surplus to avoid weight gain. Daily meals should include:
  1. Healthy fats including omega 3s such as in fatty fish, nuts, seeds, avocado, egg yolk, olive oil, coconut oil and seeds that help increase insulin sensitivity. Stay away from trans fats.
  2. Clean protein like chicken, lean beef, fish, lentils, quinoa and eggs.
  3. A variety of antioxidant rich vegetables and fruits such as dark greens, bright colored vegetables, starchy vegetables.
  4. Healing spices and herbs such as cinnamon, turmeric, cumin, garlic, cayenne and ginger.
  5. Minimal sugar and sugary beverages as sugar can cause insulin resistance and increase belly fat storage.
  6. High fiber, both soluble and insoluble.
  7. Antioxidant-rich green tea. Try to have 2 to 3 cups a day.
  8. Himalayan salt for cooking with all trace minerals, it is great for balancing hormones.
  • Engage in regular exercise since physical activity reduces insulin levels and increases insulin sensitivity. Balance and vary your exercise between cardio, strength training and endurance exercise – this will boost muscle, maintaining hormones that decline with age such as growth hormone and DHEA. Walking in nature and getting sun exposure can also boost serotonin and endorphins to lift your mood.
  • Get consistent high quality sleep. Sleep is restorative and helps in balancing insulin, growth hormone, hunger and satiety hormones.
  • Engage in stress-reducing techniques to lower cortisol and adrenaline like meditation, yoga or getting a massage. Devote at least 20 minutes every day to these activities.
  • Be careful with the use of medications and birth control pills. Birth control pills can increase the risk of some cancers, heart attack, weight gain and mood changes.
  • To reduce bone mass loss that comes with menopause, take a vitamin D supplement and eat calcium rich foods as dark leafy greens and sardines with bones. Vitamin B6 is also beneficial for menopausal women. Some natural remedies might relieve symptoms as black cohosh and ashwaganda.
