Mistiqa in Gezira Club, Zamalek

Gezira Club’s vast garden is where oriental cuisine specialists, Mistiqa takes place. Open air restauarnt in Zamalek Mistiqa is the place where you can drink fresh juice and eat the night away. Mustafa, the friendly and well-informed branch manager, was eager to boast what he has in store, whilst the Shish Tawook’s flavorsome aroma coming from the outdoor grill tickled our noses and made our mouths water.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Mistiqa’s menu includes oriental classics, a wide variety of cold and hot mezze dishes, salads, and fresh juices. We let Mustafa make the choices for us as he was eager to ‘wow’ us with the restaurant’s signature dishes.

Mustafa started us off with grilled kebda, immaculately seasoned in lemon and cumin to break its iron flavor, the grilled kebda was perfectly complemented with the accompanying baba ghanoush. The baladi bread was fresh out of the oven, steaming hot and delicious. We were also presented with impressive kofta served with French fries. The kofta was seasoned and cooked to perfection and taste amazing after a quick dip in the tahina.

As mains, we started with the signature grilled half-chicken. The chicken was covered with a light flavorsome herby crust which we loved.  After smelling the flavor coming from the outdoor grill where Shish Tawook skewers were being cooked, we had to try it! The tender and juicy chicken cubes were presented on top of each other in the center of a white plate, with grilled green pepper and tomatoes, creating a pretty color contrast. The beautiful presentation didn’t last too long, and after a couple photos for our Instagram account (we had to!), we feasted and cleansed our palates with a fresh cold Lemon and Mint, just perfect!

Other Menu Options that Appealed

Mistiqa’s menu includes most classic and authentic oriental dishes. For appetizers, the Vine Leaves and the Hawawshi definitely looked tempting. As mains, the classic Mix Grill is another option that sounded appealing. Mistiqa also offers a wide range of fresh juices.

Mistiqa

Décor & Ambience

A fresh garden feel, white wooden dining tables are set up around big beautiful old trees and large canvas parasols. We could hear birds chirping and the bushes moving with the evening breeze. The outdoor cooking grill leaves a flavorsome aroma in the air, and plays a part in opening your appetite. At the back of the garden is a smaller indoor area, surrounded by glass walls and a TV which will come in handy on the days of big sporting events. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about the signature dishes and how they are cooked. The restaurant also includes large tables for the bigger groups.

Clientele mix:  The clientele includes big groups and families. As it is located at the sports club, groups of moms who are waiting for their children to finish their various trainings can be seen indulging in fresh juices or simply having coffee and chatting away. You’ll also see men in suits having business meetings or simply grabbing a bite after work.

Price range: Mid-expensive

Prama: A New Innovative Approach to Working Out

By Mariam Elhamy

Prama is a new training concept that levels up boring, tired cardio training by combining dynamic instructors, cool music, interactive screens, pressure-sensitive floors and walls and lighting features. The interactive screens track each person’s heart rate and pace of activity. The system also has special workout programs designed for training strength, speed, agility and much more. We spoke with personal trainer Omar Fouad to learn more about the launch of Prama in Egypt and how it is different from the traditional workout.

What is Prama?

Prama is for everyone and anyone! Each person can go at their own pace, intensity and speed so beginners and more advanced people can train side by side with no competition. There are also specialized Prama workouts such as Prama Seniors, which is a workout designed for ages 60+ and focuses on mobility, strength, balance, cardiovascular capacity and coordination. Prama Basketball is for those who are trying to learn basic skills, and those who are more advanced and want to improve or practice their skillset. Last but not least, there is Prama Kids and Family, offering fun quality time for families by engaging in a workout focused on on motor skills and strength capacity.

How to do it

A typical Prama workout involves moving between stations, each with a computer screen to display your heart rate, activity, and remaining time. Usually, you begin with a normal warm up and a typical workout includes a maximum of 8 stations. You spend 1 full minute per station with a rest time of 15 seconds between each station. The entire workout is repeated 3 times.

For example, one station may require running from one side of the room to the other, requiring you to step on the light on the floor in the process. Other stations may require lunges while carrying weights, plank dumbbell rows, or slider push-ups.

Why is Prama good for me?

There are two types of Prama workouts: Prama Energy and Prama Strength. Prama Energy is a total body workout in less than 60 minutes. It is a combination of functional training and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), which focuses on increasing the heart rate through station training without breaks. This improves weight management, tones your body, burns more calories, and increases total fitness conditioning.

Prama Strength has more sets and repetitions of exercises at each station with breaks between each set. It focuses on isolation and compound strength exercises targeting major muscle groups. Prama Strength improves physique, and increases muscle mass percentage. The intensity of the exercise changes throughout the whole workout.

Enjoy the results!

Good news! You can burn up to 750 calories per 45 minutes. On the short term, you will find improved performance, balance, coordination, agility and reaction time. Longer-term results include increased cardiovascular efficiency, improved muscle tone, and increased metabolism post-workout which results in better shape, bigger muscle mass and fat loss.

Omar Fouad is a certified personal trainer, group class instructor, Prama instructor, sports and pregnancy nutritionist, and a dentistry student. Find contact details and where to Prama here:

JINN: Netflix’s First Original Arabic Series

By Kareem Awad

Netflix is now one of the biggest production companies in the world, having produced smash hit series such as Stranger Things and Narcos. Although the company has licensed a number of Egyptian and Arab TV series, JINN is the first ever Arabic TV series produced and released by the platform in partnership with Lebanese production company Kabreet Productions. Similar to Stranger Things, JINN is primarily a show about friendship with a supernatural twist. A group of talented Jordanian teenagers fill the cast and now lead the way for Netflix’s production in the region, as it will be aired in 190 countries worldwide this season … stay tuned on June 13th!

CWM: How did you audition for the show and how were you picked up by Netflix?

Hamzeh Okab: For me it was a special case. Netflix was interviewing different schools, and a friend of mine that auditioned told me about it. Then, in February 2018, I saw the official announcement and the call for auditions and decided I wanted to try it out. So I started with an online video audition, and then I got a call back for a face to face interview, and the rest is history.

Sultan Alkhail: Actually it’s a long story. Once I heard that they announced the show, I read the press release and decided I had to be part of JINN. So I started Googling as everyone does and I reached Rajeev Dassani, the executive producer, who referred me to the casting agency that was taking care of the auditions. It was a really long process, it took about 2 months and a half, but it was very educational.

Aysha Shahaltough: A friend of mine who works in the film industry asked if I wanted to audition and I said, “Yes, of course!” I had to send in a video and it was a really long process and I had to keep reminding myself not to be sad if I didn’t get that part.

What was your experience in acting before JINN?

Hamzeh Okab: This is my first time acting in front of the camera. Before that, I acted in many school productions. Ever since grade 5 I’ve been in every production for my school.

Aysha Shahaltough: I acted in tons of plays at schools and small projects at university.

Sultan Alkhail: I began acting at the age of 8 and was always fascinated by this field. I tried to experience everything from acting to lighting and directing. My experiences include theatre and a couple of small projects.

How have you been coping with filming such a big show while still being in school/university? Was it difficult?

Hamzeh Okab: I’m not going to say it’s easy. It’s been quite difficult and there have been a few obstacles on the way, especially since this is my last year and I’m applying for universities. So it’s been stressful trying to be Keras for 12 hours a day and Hamzeh for 12 hours a day. But I love the challenge and I’m trying to overcome it, and I think that I’m doing a good job.

Sultan Alkhail: I study Theatre Arts. I knew that I was going to shoot and have to study at the same time so I organized to have a limited amount of subjects, just two days a week.

Aysha Shahaltough: I study Design and Visual Communication. I’ve got 5 days of class a week. I missed two days this week and I’ve got a lot to catch up on.

What do you think you brought to your character?

Hamzeh Okab: Keras is sort of the outcast of the group. Everyone looks at him weirdly and the way he interacts with people is strange because he is new to this environment, having just moved to a new school. I actually went through the same thing so it was easy for me. I lived abroad and when I moved back here I faced these challenges where I had to learn the language and learn how to interact with people again. So I understand what Keras is going through.

Sultan Alkhail: I can’t say that there are a lot of similarities between Sultan and Yassin but he’s a very interesting character. Yassin suffers from bullying at school and I find it interesting to play such a character that represents an issue that happens too often.

How has your experience been as a first time in a big production?

Sultan Alkhail: It has been interesting and exciting at the same time. You feel responsible because you really want it to be a big success. I’m trying to enjoy the process because it is fun and I’m looking forward for people to see the outcome.

Aysha Shahaltough: I’m interested in the film field so it has been exciting to be on an actual set and see how things work. I’ve been learning a lot. I met a lot of lovely people. It’s been lots of fun!

Did JINN change the way you perceive the supernatural?

Sultan Alkhail: I always believed in the supernatural. But at the end it has nothing to do with what you believe or not, just use your imagination.

Aysha Shahaltough: I personally do not believe in the supernatural and I still do not believe in the supernatural.

How much do you think about having a show that’s going to be available in 190 countries, seen across the world?

Aysha Shahaltough: I try not to think about it since it’s still not out. We had a media training yesterday and they were talking about it and I thought to myself, “I still don’t believe you guys!”

Sultan Alkhail: It’s crazy! I don’t want to think about it!

By Maeri Frances

With three major planets, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto, turning retrograde this month it may seem that recent progress may stall or face new roadblocks. Don’t give up; your resolve is being tested. It is a time to reinforce and refine what is worth working towards. The end result will be built on stronger foundations.

P.S. Don’t forget to read your rising sign as well if you know it.

Happy birthday, Aries!

April in a Nutshell:  Good things come to those who wait!

Use the first couple of weeks of April to do a bit of inner soul searching. You may have a relationship that you are reluctant to go public with, and communication will be kept away from prying eyes and ears. By the 20th, life could suddenly seem a lot more exciting. Career challenges are there in the coming period, so stay on the ball.

Taurus:

April in a Nutshell: East, west, home is best.

Your party mood is full on, so keep in the loop with friends and groups whose activities you enjoy. Travel plans may face cancellation or delays due to unforeseen events, so have a Plan B in place. As the month moves on you may benefit from slowing down a bit, time spent alone will allow you to get your thoughts together.

Gemini:

April in a Nutshell:  Network while the time is ripe.

You may find yourself in the right place at the right time this April. Handy connections could come through your work or introductions by friends. Cooperation and support are still strong in your life, but make sure that financial matters do not throw a spanner in the works.

Cancer:

April in a Nutshell: Polish your public image.

You are in the public eye this month, so make sure you let your inner charisma glow. How you look and what you say will stay on record, in peoples’ minds at least. Close relationships are still creating challenges, so don’t push things to the breaking point. A little breathing space for all involved will help.

Leo:

April in a Nutshell: Decisions, decisions.

You may be considering a trip overseas, or visitors may arrive in town. Don’t let this distract you from other issues, it seems that a health matter needs attention. Tackle this head on; it is not likely to go away without practical action. Your daily routine may seem boring and humdrum; try to make it more fun.

Virgo:

April in a Nutshell: Get your finances in order.

Yes, we know that balancing the books can be a drag, but now is the time to cut back on unnecessary indulgences. If you make an effort you could find support and solutions you hadn’t realised were available. Change your mind-set and look for low-cost ways to enjoy your free time.

Libra:

April in a Nutshell: Balance work with play.

If something seems lacking in your life, it could be that you need to make an effort to invite people into it. A renewed enjoyment for your work and daily habits could open up the path for a new relationship if you are single. You may also need to give more time to a family member.

Scorpio:

April in a Nutshell: Stay positive.

Your mind can be known to plunge into some pretty dark places at times, and it is easy to drag friends and family along with it. Try to deal with any fears and anxieties privately, rather than let the mood affect relationships. Work and health matters look positive, and it is a good time to add to your wardrobe.

Sagittarius:

April in a Nutshell: Look at what you need to feel secure.

This month you may feel as though the rug has been pulled out from under your feet. Try to see it as a wakeup call, and shake off a few cobwebs. You are being challenged to tap into your creativity and sense of adventure, let go of any feelings of insecurity and take the plunge.

Capricorn:

April in a Nutshell: Walk that tightrope.

With two major planets going retrograde in your birth sign you may find yourself questioning a lot of things you had been taking for granted. Even though this may affect your self-confidence, don’t buckle. Dig deep within yourself and stick with what feels right. Better days are not far off.

Aquarius:

April in a Nutshell: Are you being your own worst enemy?

It can be tempting to feel that everything is going against you at times. This month you need to sit down and have a heart-to-heart talk with yourself. How many of your problems are really due to your own lifestyle and attitudes? Make an effort to put a few changes in place, you will find others willing to support you.

Pisces:

April in a Nutshell: Finances should be improving.

If you play your cards right you should see a boost in your bank balance. Work matters pick up, especially for the self-employed. Friends may be giving you stress, and sensitive soul that you are, you may let their woes drag you down. You can’t solve the world’s problems, just be there for them when they need to vent.
