Our Favorite Ramadan Commercials 2019

By: Mariam Elhamy

Each year major companies like Vodafone, Orange and Etisalat battle it out with their Ramadan ads for who brings the best commercial to the game. To make it into a real online competition we’ve put together some of the most popular/creative Ramadan commercials we’ve seen so far, and you be the judge!

Round 1: Etisalat, Vodafone, Orange and We

Of course, we had to start with the most talked about Etisalat’s Mohamed Ramadan and Van Damme ad which features Mohamed Ramadan and Van Damme fighting to see who’s the strongest. Some shots show Van Damme talking in Arabic and saying things like “Egriiii” and “Netkalem” which shows how much effort he put into filming, thank you Van Damme for learning Arabic for us!

Then comes the ever so famous Vodafone Gama3 7abaybak ad, which shows memories of Amr Diab when he was younger. Reminiscing his childhood friends as they reunite to recreate their old memories. Then to put real meaning to Gama3 7abaybak, Egypt’s beloved stars Ezzat Abou Aouf, Sawsan Badr, Ghada Adel, Menna Shalaby, Dina El Sherbiny, Ashraf Abdelbaky, Riham Abdel Ghafour, Ahmed Malek, Ahmed Fahmy, and Hassan El Shafei gather around the table to celebrate Ramadan, chapeau Vodafone!

We cannot miss the fact that Orange stirred our emotions with this touchy ad, featuring Tamer Hosny and Nancy Ajram making “Far2 Kbeer” in other people’s lives.

Bringing together the comedy duo that never fails to make us laugh: Karim Abdel Aziz and Maged El Kedwany is a clever move from We. Adding in the Indian theme is a plus.

Round 2: NATIONAL BANK OF EGYPT, nbk, banque du qaire, AND BANQUE MISR

National Bank of Egypt’s bank robbery advert is hilarious! With the robbers finding out that the branch they’re robbing is actually electronic and that there’s no money!

NBK’s ads are super creative and super funny! A few workmates pick on one employee who has a problem with banks and loans.

Banque Du Caire wills us to chase after our dreams and not be afraid of judgment and it’s just the amount of inspiration that we needed… Plus some cash.

Ebn Masr Ded El Kasr! No need to say more Banque Misr.

Round 3: AlMarasem Development and Madinaty

AlMarasem Development advert made the list with its interview theme. Three interviewers ask typical questions like “Sell me this pen” and “Where do you see yourself in 10 years” and the answers are so witty it cracks you up!

Really Assala what have you done this time? Everyone’s talking about how dramatic Assala sounds in Madinaty’s ad. I mean, do you really need so much emotion to advertise for a compound?

Round 4: Carrier and Sharp

Carrier’s really simple but funny ad makes the list. It makes fun of a few stereotypes that we meet every day in a cool way.

How can you turn daily routine activities into an experience? Ask Sharp!

Round 5: Fresh and Tornado

Y2ema Fresh Y2ema Balash… How catchy is that?

Musical ads are just so creative especially if they’re made on a classic song for kids right? NO, They’re not!

Round 6: Nescafe

I think we all agree that even though Nescafe has no competitors, they have outdone themselves in their hilarious ads about studying and procrastinating. We keep watching it over and over and just laughing!

Who Are You in Ramadan?

When it comes to Ramadan, each one of us has their own habits and routine. Take this quiz and find out who you are in Ramadan! Don’t forget to share your results with friends 😉

Macera in Cairo Complex, Heliopolis

On a midweek early evening we set off to Cairo Complex, a lively food and shopping hub with restaurants near Sheraton Al Matar area where Macera Lounge and Bar is located. Once settled we began skimming the comprehensive board menu, which included breakfast, sandwiches, salads, pizza, and main courses.

Dishes Sampled

We started with a small selection of appetizers and some drinks. We sampled the Barbeque Buffalo Wings, blue cheese and hot sauces, Fried Mix Platter comprising of chunks of deep fried chicken, mozzarella sticks, spring rolls, onion rings and stuffed mushroom with honey mustard dip and sweet chili dip, a plate ideal for sharing in a bigger group, Sand Smelts, commonly known as besaria, served warm, these crunchy tiny fish are easy to eat and pack a very distinct taste.

Moving on to Macera Pizza, a signature dish that is uniquely shaped with a hollowed center filled with a small portion of arugula and cherry tomato salad, and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. The very thin crust pizza base is topped with home-made tomato sauce and mozzarella along with minced beef, pepperoni, smoked turkey, smoked beef, mushroom and colored bell peppers. The pizza crust held all the ingredients together without our hands getting messy. We then dove into the Chicken Cordon Bleu – a classic French dish of breaded pan-fried chicken breast stuffed with smoked beef and blue cheese. Accompanied by sautéed vegetables and fries, the Cordon Blue was on point. After this feast of a meal, we opted to take a rain check on dessert that we plan to cash out very soon!

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

Definitely the dessert menu! We would sample on a second a visit. Beverage options include a selection of hot and cold drinks and a full bar.

Décor & Ambience

A mix of wood, black and white tile floor, industrial lighting fixtures and stone walls give a contemporary feel.

CODE at Dusit Thani Lakeview Cairo

CODE Dusit Thani

CODE Dusit ThaniCode is one of the newest restaurants in New Cairo, located in Dusit Thani hotel, which offers as a fine dining spot and bar to create an unforgettable getaway. With a small menu as intimate as the restaurant itself, the signature style is filled with attention to detail from start to finish. If you’re looking for a romantic dinner spot in Cairo, check out our review!

Dishes Sampled

To start our delicious dinner we grabbed a gin and tonic with fresh cucumber and mint and snacked on homemade Potato and Beet Chips. Taking in the ambiance and beautiful decor of the restaurant we relaxed and sipped our refreshing spring drinks and looked through the menu. The chef decided to surprise us and we agreed to start with the Salmon Poke Bowl and sushi. The poke bowl was filled with a mix of sweet, salty, and fresh flavors, making it hearty but light. The sushi was probably the freshest we have ever had in Cairo; the black and red rolls with fresh tuna and salmon as well as the Philadelphia roll melting in our mouths left us wanting more.

Next, we had the Goat Cheese Salad topped with arugula, a portion large enough for three to share, with some Truffle Mushroom Chips and the Grilled Calamari and Octopus. All three dishes were unique with flavor profiles so individual it was refreshing that we went for a second order of the Truffle Mushroom Chips. For mains, we dug into the Truffle Risotto with foie gras, rich and creamy and every risotto lover’s dream. The Chicken and Mushroom with baby potatoes was another fantastic dish that left us full but treading on! With almost zero stomach room left, we sweetened our day with a Chocolate Fondant with vanilla ice cream and nuts, leaving us full but determined to come back soon to eat more.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

The Shrimp and Beef Tacos, salmon filet, and marinated sashimi roll all look appealing for repeat visits.

Beverage options include a wide range of soft drinks and both local and imported alcoholic beverages.

Décor & Ambience

Comfortably intimate, the decor is ultra-modern and elegant with simple blacks, whites, and greys giving the bright space a chic and modern vibe. The food is that of a high-end restaurant, and the atmosphere is of a nightclub in Miami.

Clientele mix: CODE intentionally attracts an upper-class clientele featuring Cairo’s finest from socialites to businessmen looking for a posh night out.

Price range: The menu’s prices are reflective of the premium service and high-end ingredients on the menu.

Hours: CODE is only open for dinner service right now starting at 7 pm with food and drinks offered into the night. Post Ramadan the restaurant will be open for lunch and will hold special events.

Note: CODE is closed during Ramadan and reopens after the Holy Month.

Warm up with 15 jumping jacks to get the blood flowing. Relax your shoulders back and down along your spine and widen your stance so that your feet are below your shoulders. As you jump, lift your arms until your hands are about shoulder width apart.

Push Ups

Keep your body stiff and straight as a plank and keep your elbows at a 45-degree angle from your sides. Remember to keep your back straight and buttocks at level as you go up and down, repeat 15 times

Lunges

Keep your upper body straight, with your shoulders back and relaxed and chin up. Always engage your core while doing lunges. Step forward with one leg, lowering your hips until both knees are bent at about a 90-degree angle. Repeat 10 times on each leg, the front leg is the one working. Be careful not to extend your knees past the toes.

Burpees

Most hated but most useful full-body work out move! Squat down and place your hands on the floor just outside of your feet. Jump both feet back to the plank position. Drop to a push-up then return to plank position. Jump the feet back in toward the hands then explosively jump into the air, reaching your arms straight overhead. Repeat 15 times.

Jump Squat

Begin with a regular squat, then engage your core and jump up explosively. When you land, lower your body back into the squat position and land as quietly as possible. Repeat 15 times, your knees should not extend past your toes.

Toe-Touch Crunch

Lie on your back and reach your arms behind you, pointing your legs toward the ceiling.

Swing your arms toward the ceiling; as you do, lift your head and shoulder off the ground and touch your toes. Repeat 20 times, your legs should be kept at a 90-degree angle.

Bicycle Crunch

Lie flat on the floor with your lower back pressed to the ground. Put your hands behind your head, then bring your knees in towards your chest and lift your shoulder blades off the ground, but be sure not to pull on your neck. Straighten your right leg out to about a 45-degree angle to the ground while turning your upper body to the left, bringing your right elbow towards the left knee. Switch sides and do the same exercise on the other side to complete one rep. Repeat 20 times.

Lateral raise

Stand with a 2kg dumbbell or large bottle of water in each hand. Keep your back straight, engage your core, and slowly lift the weights out to the side with the elbow slightly bent. Your shoulders should be working here and you should feel a slight burn if you are working them correctly. Repeat 15 times.

Jumping Rope

Cap off the circuit with 50 jumps

Cool Down

When you have completed your three circuits, make sure to stretch your hamstrings, quads, and your back.

Villa Caracas at Mall of Arabia

Villa Caracas

By: Mariam Elhamy

Villa Caracas has already established itself as one of the best Lebanese restaurants in Cairo, and the branch located inside Mall of Arabia’s extension and overlooking The Park provides a spectacular Lebanese dining experience that you won’t find in many places. We just had to sample some of the 50 new items in the menu and give you a sneak peek at what to expect from this branch.

New on the Menu: Omelette Bel Bathengan, Eggs Bel Lahm, Manousheh with Eggs and Bastermah, Manousheh Habesh, Sojok Villa Caracas, Halloumi w Meraba Banadora, Manousheh Lotus, and Outhmalliyet Villa Caracas.

Dishes Sampled

We started with the Mezze Mahdouma, a huge round platter with five cold or hot mezze of your choice. We chose the zesty stuffed vine leaves, Goat Labne with Honey and sprinkled nuts, Muhammara; a spicy Lebanese walnut dip, Shamandar bel Laban; beetroot with yogurt, and finally a classic Hommos.

We also tried some of the new Cold Hommos Mezze options; the Hommos with basil pesto sauce), the Hommos with avocado cubes, olive oil and sesame seeds and the Hommos with Ginger. The combinations seem bizarre on paper, but tasted surprisingly delicious!

Next we tried the tasty Salatet El Mama consisting of grilled halloumi cheese, aubergine, sliced cherry tomatoes, roasted pine nuts and pomegranate molasses sauce nestled on a bed of arugula leaves. The saltiness of the cheese combined with the fresh rocca leaves and the crunch of the pine nuts make this salad a must-try! We also tried the Tabbouleh, one of the best we’ve ever had, and the Red Cabbage Cake Salad, which was sprinkled with nuts and drizzled with pomegranate molasses sauce.

A sample of the Crispy Halloumi bites was a must. The cubes of warm halloumi cheese wrapped in crunchy fried vermicelli and a dip of sweet fig jam made us want more! Then came the Manousheh Bel Falafel which consists of a thin layer of pastry topped with refreshing greens, sliced cherry tomatoes, crunchy radish slices, pomegranates and scrumptious falafel. The usual oily feel of the falafel is nonexistent in this dish.

We were excited to try the Fanageel Kebbeh Bel Hommos, which is the exact definition of the name: small cups of Kebbeh filled with Hommos, and the famous Batata Bel Kezbara, mouthwatering and well-seasoned. Our last dish was Kofta Bel Karaz, bite-size meatballs cooked in sweet cherry sauce and topped with crunchy pine nuts and sliced almonds… a winning combination!

Our bellies were singing with joy but we still managed to cap the meal with dessert! The Aiesh El Sarayah arrived with clotted cream in between two layers of aish el sarayah and topped with crunchy Konafa and sugar syrup. We also tried the Tart Halaweh which comes with a chocolate tart base and halawa spread in the middle, topped with vanilla ice-cream and cotton candy.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

On our next visit we would love to try the Mini Kafta, the Koussa Be Labban and Djaj Ras Asfour Bel Pesto.

Beverages options include Fresh juices, Lebanese cocktails, soft and hot drinks, detox and green juices, smoothies, Ayran and special Villa Caracas drinks.

Décor & Ambience

The place is spacious and lavish looking, with a marble bar on the right as you enter and a tree planted right in the middle giving off a certain relaxed garden-like feel. The open area overlooks Mall of Arabia’s The Park so it has a nice view and lots of greenery.
