Wear Your Skin! Not a Mask: Achieve an All-Natural Look with Make-up

Make-up

By Aisha Helmy

As we enter the new decade, the all-natural look is making a huge come back! Wipe off the layers of foundation and allow your skin to breathe. Healthy, glowing skin takes the appeal away from harshly contoured faces. In short, makeup trends this year place individuality and character at the center of aesthetics. Your face should look like you, and not a mask. Consider these 6 tips for your 2020 makeup routine!

Focus on skincare

The care starts from within! Hydration and proper nutrition will give you the canvas for this year’s colorful trends. Makeup should complement to your natural features, and not a complete makeover.

Minimal contouring is in the spotlight

Light coverage foundation on a well-moisturized face gives you the best base for that soft look. The secret to having a natural glowing effect is to apply liquid highlighter on the high points of your face before applying foundation, this way your skin will look dewy.

Foundation

Skip the overfilled Instagram eyebrows

Go for polished soft eyebrows. Get that defined buffed look by lightly filling the gaps, if any, and then brushing up your eyebrows.

Think “bedazzled” eyes

Get inspired by shiny, ornamental art deco! Experiment with popping, glittering and colorful eye shadows, focusing on warm shades. Don’t shy away from mixing shimmery shades and jewel tones. Experiment with colored eyeliner, from pastels to neon. For smoky eyes, play with reds, earth tones and all the shades of gold.

Say goodbye to overlined matted lips, welcome flushed balmy lips

For an everyday look, use lip stain topped with a balm or a little bit of gloss. If you don’t own a lip stain, dab your lipstick lightly on the center of both lips and tap it out with your fingers for a very thin layer of color. In terms of color, it is all about sheer nudes, earth tones, and nude browns with pink undertones. But wait! The classic bold lip is also making a comeback. Don’t be afraid to use a 50’s red or a hot pink with a glossy finish.

Lip Gloss

Tie it all together with natural looking, lightly blushed cheeks

Choose the closest shade to your naturally flushed face, and apply it high on your cheekbones using cream blush rather than powder.

2020 in a Nutshell

Having your natural skin shining through gives you the freedom to get creative with your eye and lips makeup, without looking like the Joker. No need to abide by the “eye or lip” rule anymore, and play with fun daring combinations.

The Cairo Angels: Giving Startups a Future

Cairo Angels

The Cairo Angels has already garnered quite a name for itself in the startup and entrepreneurial community, and it looks like this is just the beginning. We caught up with Project Manager Ahmad Samir to learn more.

The Cairo Angels is an investment network, we look for startups that use tech and have a high potential of growth. Since 2012, we have invested in 25 startups so far, some of our notable investments include: Instabug, Elves, Eventtus and Orcas. We work with a lot of the players in the startup ecosystem like RiseUp and other Angel Networks to keep growing startup support tools and hopefully have our version of Silicon Valley here in Cairo.

What can you tell us about your team and support from successful, high profile business entrepreneurs?

Our team deals with hundreds of startups per year, we try our best to connect them with people that might help them grow and even understand their business more. Our network of investors has a big role to play in supporting entrepreneurs since they have the relevant experience as well as desire to build successful startups. We rely on our portfolio to continuously give us feedback to better our services and capacity building offered to startups.

How did the idea come about, and how long did it take to get things off the ground?

The idea came when the current board of directors realized that they were separately looking for tech opportunities to invest in. They decided to create The Cairo Angels as a network of Angel Investors that track and invest in tech startups. The idea came about right after the 25th of January Revolution, and was inspired by the atmosphere that surrounded Egypt at the time. Our first investment came through Instabug in 2012, almost a year and a half later.

What are the top things to take into consideration when launching a new venture?

Keep in mind that building the right infrastructure to grow your company will go a long way towards your success. Understanding that what is needed is to have a scalable company is what sets entrepreneurs apart. In fact, statistics show that the most successful entrepreneurs start their venture at 45 years old. With that in mind, make sure that you have accumulated enough experience to grow as well as to have a diverse team.

What challenges did you face, and how did you overcome them?

The main challenges today are sourcing startups, which is why we partnered up with EG Bank on MINT Incubator, the goal of the incubator is to produce investable startups that can act as pipeline for the ecosystem. So far, out of the 42 startups that we have graduated almost 40% have gone on to raise a seed round. A seed round is usually the first investment that is injected into a startup and ranges from 100,000 USD to 1,000,000 USD. Globally, seed rounds can go up to 1.5M USD.

How do you view Egypt compared to other countries in terms of projects like The Cairo Angels?

There are countries like the UAE that are ahead in the region in terms of startup financing but we all still have a long way to go.

Cash Cows: Expand your Business Network

Cash Cows

When your business is in need of a consultant, when you want to make professional connections, or expand your business network, Cash Cows is where to go. A chat with CEO Ahmed Reda gave us a clear idea of what it’s all about.

In a nutshell, what is Cash Cows?

At Cash Cows, we’re money makers. We deliver quantifiable results, based on a well-tested methodology, our solid experience that spans across all market segments, and our vast network of diverse industry professionals. Our multifaceted team of specialists has hands-on business experience that goes hand-in-hand with delivering excellence, every single time. We work with you to analyze your most critical business priorities, then set a fail-proof plan to begin the journey of success. Our bold ideas, pragmatic solutions, and immense network are guaranteed to transform your business into a cash cow.

Can you please introduce your team?

We’re a group of four dynamic partners who come from very diverse backgrounds. Being malleable has allowed us to quickly adapt and learn the ins-and-outs of entire establishments, hence providing focused expertise to transform, develop and grow businesses for long-term success. Each one of us has successfully launched and monetized at least three companies over the course of our career. Being known to completely immerse ourselves in organizations, our passion and dedication have allowed us to form strong ties with everyone, from business professionals to government officials and booming entrepreneurs. Our vast network and diverse experiences enable us to help you find answers to your most pressing questions.

How did the idea come about, and how long did it take to get things off the ground?

The idea sparked when we determined the rapid growth of innovative and value-driven startups in Egypt. Cash Cows took off in a year. Being in the entrepreneurial scene for a combined total of 35 years has helped us expand our knowledge across all sectors and market segments. Thus, we want to support start-ups in honing their operations and strategies to successfully grow and build better brands that withstand the test of time, as well as bridging the gap between old processes (experience) and new methods (solutions), hence enabling clients to conduct business effectively across all boundaries.

What are the top things to take into consideration when launching a new venture?

Four top things to consider when launching a new venture are team, partners, funding plan and execution. It is fundamental for startup businesses to do their market research to analyze their potential growth in the targeted industry. The right team and partners will definitely help execute the business plan and gravitate more ideas that will add value to the business and its services.

How did you overcome any challenges that cropped up?

There are a lot of successful startup ideas, however, it was a challenge to discover innovative/new ideas especially in a big market place like Egypt. A lot of startups chase the idea of being innovative when it is simpler to showcase expertise, processes and results. In this case, we would help make sure that startups share their “idea” with their clients effectively through modern methods, by conducting reports, and holding meetings with them on their day-to-day business decisions.

Where do you think Egypt stands compared to other countries in terms of projects like Cash Cows?

Egypt is definitely considered home to a wave of entrepreneurs, innovators and investors that are more knowledgeable and experienced as the population adapts to technology in daily life. Compared to other countries in the Middle East, we do think it comes second after the UAE as the fastest startup ecosystem.

What type of projects and initiatives have you had a hand in helping get off the ground?

We are currently assisting startups in diverse industries, including travel, interior design, e-payment technology, and health and fitness. There are a lot of exciting upcoming projects that we do foresee booming.

Boulevard at Capital Promenade

Boulevard at Capital Promenade

We all need a relaxing spot where we can get together with friends for a bite, or bring the family together for a leisurely meal, and Boulevard in Sheikh Zayed hits just the right note with its international cuisine.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Their signature dishes are Buffalo Chicken Casserole, Buttered Halloumi, Hot Chicken Balls, Salmon Paupiette, Rib Eye Steak, and Chicken Milano.

After a long day at the office, our appetites were primed so without further ado we passed our order to the friendly, attentive waiter. First things first, we got to work on long, cool mango smoothies.

Refreshing and just right for sipping on while we waited for our soup. Nothing beats a tomato soup in winter in our opinion, and Boulevard came out a winner. The soup arrived piping hot, in a charming tureen complete with lid, accompanied by a dish of freshly made croutons. The smiley face on the soup, created with slurps of fresh cream, won us over and would be a hit with kids, we are sure.

Just as we were scraping up the last spoonful our Hot Chicken Balls arrived, along with a large portion of Nachos in a Can. Confused? Don’t be. The nachos do actually come in a can, which is upended onto a plate in front of you, oozing all sorts of cheesy deliciousness mixed with ground beef. Of course, the usual accompaniments of sour cream, tomato and onion and guacamole were there too, so we set to munching.

The deep-fried Hot Chicken Balls were crisp on the outside, and beautifully soft inside with a nicely seasoned mix of finely ground chicken and cheese. Just right for plonking into the Louisiana Mayo Dip that came alongside.

That soon made way for a large plate of Creamy Chicken Pasta. Italian tagliatelle, cooked precisely al dente came bathed in a creamy spinach sauce, loaded with pan-seared garlic chicken, mushroom and a liberal topping of Parmesan cheese. By this point we had stopped counting calories, it would have been a pointless exercise.

Throwing caution to the wind we opted to share a sinfully rich, blueberry-topped cheesecake. As with every dish we had tried, it came in an almost embarrassingly generous portion, but we did our best to finish every last mouthful.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

The wood-fired pizzas had us salivating, and the burgers looked inviting as well. The menu is varied and quite long, so there is plenty of choice. Beverages include all soft options, but with a good range of juices, shakes, smoothies etc., in addition to hot beverages.

Décor and Ambience

Seating is both indoor and outdoor on the spacious terrace area. The color scheme is neutral, with tables in both marble and attractive, contemporary wood. Service was prompt, friendly and attentive, so we had no waiting time between courses. There is a large indoor wall screen for entertainment, and shisha is served outdoors, where large space heaters keep away the evening chill.

Clientele Mix: On our visit other diners were a mix of couples, groups of friends, families and even a few singles tapping away on their laptops. We do think that this is a perfect spot for families, as the large portions can easily be shared and there are plenty of kid-friendly items to choose from.

Worth Noting

Both takeaway and delivery are available.

Price Range: Very affordable.

Thumbs Up: Boulevard does its bit for the environment by using paper straws.

Top Tip: The breakfast menu is pretty amazing, with some fantastic sounding options. Definitely on our list of things to do on the weekend.

Moody Jones: An Egyptian Music Virtuoso with Global Reach

Moody Jones: An Egyptian Music Virtuoso with Global Reach

By: Mariam Elhamy

He’s worked with some of the biggest international recording artists like Iggy Azalea and Tyga, and last month he lit things up at Cairo Jazz Club. We caught up with DJ/Producer/Promoter Moody Jones and learned more about his extensive career in music, working with rap superstars, and what advice he would share with beginners who want to hit the big time.

You grew up in Saudi Arabia, when did you play your first gig and what inspired this love of music?

My first gig was in Montreal when I was 17, but growing up in Saudi I used to always play at underground hip-hop parties.

My first mix tape was a collection of my favorite Disney tunes. I remember loving the Lion King tape because it was lime green. Even then I was very particular about how things looked!

Why did you start playing music?

Growing up in Saudi Arabia, the songs played on the radio were always what they thought we wanted to listen to. I can’t remember a single good song playing on the radio, aside from Drive by Incubus. There were millions of tracks out there every day, so why do I have to listen to the same 12 songs every day?

I’m also a fan of the underdog. I stop listening to artists when they blow up. My love and support for you is no longer valuable. I’d rather invest in someone else who needs it. In my sets, I always include artists that no one else plays and if someone plays the songs I picked, I don’t play it anymore.

Which famous musicians have you learned a lot from?

Snoop Dogg is just my idol. I’ve been to this guy’s house and have seen how he functions. He’s one of these people that sees everything as an opportunity and everything he does makes money at the same time. If you can make money being yourself, then that’s the dream.

Are you influenced by old records and tapes? If so which ones?

I am influenced by records that come out today, but sound old. It could have instruments from the 90s with a groove from the 2000s and vocal styles from the 80s, so it crosses over.

What advice would you give beginners?

Practice. You can’t be nervous if you’re playing a banger. You’re only going to be nervous if you’re not sure of the song. I test it on my girlfriends; if the girls like it, everyone else is going to like it. If the girls dance to it, everyone else will.

If you weren’t DJing, what you’d be doing?

I’d be in an office with other artists figuring out their releases; 95% of my time, I help other artists grow. I only do DJing when I am on vacation.

Tell us about your collaborations with artists like Iggy Azalea and Tyga?

I’ve been working with Tyga even before Empire, I used to market all his music videos. I met Snoop randomly at the Osheaga Festival, we hung out in his hotel room and it was Ramadan at the time. I remember he guilt-tripped me because I am a Muslim and should be fasting. I do all Iggy’s marketing from videos to merchandise.

Last message to the readers?

Listen outside your bubble. Watch outside your screen. Forget the borders and expand. Just because something doesn’t fit, doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t like it. Stop thinking music is consumed only with ears. It’s 2020, people look at it before listening, so music is also consumed visually. Think about that when you’re working on your music.

Semsom in New Cairo

Semsom

Authentic Lebanese Flavors hailing from Beirut and with branches in Dubai, Kuwait and Muscat, Semsom has finally made its way to Levant cuisine-loving Cairo and we got a taste of this authentic Lebanese food!

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Their signature dishes are totally everything! We were greeted with a complimentary rose water drink, a pleasant and refreshing start to our meal. Semsom serves traditional Lebanese food with a twist, and that is clear right on the first page of the menu. Out of the 8 types of hummus on offer, we chose three: Hummus Arnabeet; Hummus Falafel and Hummus Zaatar and Sumac. Each with its own winning distinct texture and taste combination. Along with our hummus selection we were served a basket of freshly baked pita bread and a bowl of the Freekeh Salad. Much like its cousin tabbouleh, this salad was instead made with buckwheat, a great source of protein and loaded with nutritional benefits. To wrap up with our cold mezze we were served the Beetroot Mutaball, a unique take on the traditional eggplant babaghanoug but made with beetroot, tahini, garlic and lemon. A deep vibrant red color made this coarse puree even more appealing.

As we moved into the hot appetizers our choices came one after the other. First the Chicken Ras Asfour with cashew nuts, next came the Fish Kebbeh Cups: six cups made of fish kebbeh halves filled with golden slices of onion, sweetened by cooked raisins, crushed walnuts and sprinkled with sesame seeds, a delicious bold taste that won us over! We finished up with a large Zaatar Manakish bread beautifully displayed with fresh vegetables and olives, served with bowl of labneh.

We were then easily persuaded to try two of the best-selling desserts. The first was a crushed pistachio dough served with a scoop of misteka ice cream, topped with caramel sauce. The second was a heavenly crunchy caramelized kunafa crust, filled with gooey marshmallow, strawberry slices and Nutella sauce. Devoured with a warm cup of coffee.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

Everything else on the menu looked divine! The beverages include Cold and Hot drinks.

Décor and Ambience

Arabesque-style tiles along the wall, oriental shaped mirrors and wooden partitions displaying personalized mini backgammon boxes and other ornaments. Cobalt blue, mustard, purple and graffiti dominate the cushions and chair seats. The area is well lit with large glass pendant lights. TV screens showcase the making of the restaurant dishes. The restaurant has a cozy indoor area and a much larger outdoor area within the mall’s food court space, which serves shisha and oversees the residential complex landscape.
