You Either Love it or Hate it!

A review on The Contented Little Baby book, a book every NEW MOTHER should read.

By Lydia Schoonderbeek

I know some people think Gina Ford is a character to be taken with a pinch of salt, I love Gina! I have collected lots of Gina Ford’s books over the last few years, starting with her most popular title The Contented Little Baby Book. There are also titles on contented weaning, potty training in one week and a sleep guide for contented babies and toddlers. They are all incredibly detailed with lots of timetables for feeding and sleeping and exact amounts of milk and food. This is peace of mind for all new mothers who are unsure about sleep and feeding patterns.

Out of experience, Ford’s routine does work, and by “work” I mean that if you follow them rigidly you can train a baby to sleep uninterrupted for 12 hours at night. Ford’s main theory is that mothers who are overly tired and bad tempered from feeding their baby on demand and paying attention to its every cry are neither happy or effective as new parents, therefore it’s better that newborns are subject to strict routines.

Gina Ford’s personal experience of caring for over 300 babies was first published in 1999. She was quickly established as an influential new authority on baby and childcare issues and has remained one of the bestselling parenting books worldwide.

By following a routine that matches a growing baby’s natural rhythms, Ford prevents the hunger, overtiredness and colic that can lead to lots of crying. Babies who are settled into Ford’s routines are happy and contented because their needs for food and sleep are met, and usually sleep through the night from an early age. Whether you are expecting your first child, or are experiencing difficulties with an older baby, this comprehensive guide contains all the expert guidance you need to help your baby feed and sleep well.
