Al-Sharif aka Al Sharif Mahlab, purveyor of deep, infectious dance grooves has managed to win audiences with his charismatic presence and captivating melodies.
After a stint in the corporate world, Al-Sharif left it all behind a year ago to make a go of it with his childhood passion: music. He’s been playing music daily since.
When talking about his biggest musical inspirations from the international and local scenes, Al-Sharif’s mentioned Viken Arman, Isfar, Kerala Dust, Safi, Hot Oasis and Ouzo, respectively. His first gig at The Tap Maadi was a very special and unforgettable night for him as an entertainer, and Citizen Kain’s performance at Sanctuary Festival in Sinai was the most memorable for him as a guest.
We threw some quick rounds of questions at Al-Sharif and asked him to fire back, here’s how it went:
What makes a good/booming night for a DJ?
One word, the audience, no matter how many attendees, they lead the night.
Which decade’s music scene you could eternally be stuck in?
Music is timeless, especially for me, I love all kind of music.
What is one subgenre you think doesn’t get the attention it deserves?
It’s not a subgenre, but I can tell that live electronic music doesn’t get the attention it deserves in Egypt.
What is it that you love about the scene here?
The most I admire about our scene is the mutual support between artists.
What is one track that never gets old for you no matter how many times you hear it?
My own remix of ACID ARAB’s Still.
What festivals would you most like to perform in?
Gardens of Babylon.
