Meet the Author: Waleed Almusharaf & his Translation of the Classic Novel, The Magnificent Conman of Cairo

Waleed Almusharaf is a translator, writer, and academic, with a PhD from SOAS, University of London, currently living in California. His latest translation of Adel Kamel’s The Magnificent Conman of Cairo (Hoopoe, 2020).

What was it like to translate a classic like The Magnificent Conman of Cairo?

It was fun! The book is a classic, but that word is loaded with all kinds of connotations that don’t really suit the book. Kamel has a light, satiric, tragicomic tone. He has a sense of humor that is colored by Egypt, but also seems to translate very well in English.

Did you find certain passages a challenge to translate and why?

Actually, no. There are always things with translation that are difficult to get across, but overall, Kamel (like Tayeb Saleh, actually) writes in a way that lends itself to a story that reads naturally in English even as it retains its local flavor.

What or who is your favorite part or character in the book—without giving too much away of the story?

That’s a hard question. Kamel enchants the reader (and translator!) into such intimacy with his characters that I would feel bad picking favorites. He has a knack for making all the characters lovable and flawed, which makes it difficult to choose. As for my favorite part, I would say watch for the scenes where Khaled interacts with his father. The war between those two characters is a phenomenon that often left me laughing as I translated it.

As a translator of Arabic fiction, would you say that Adel Kamel was a ground-breaking writer for his time?

I really do. Much is made of the modern simplicity of his language (which was misunderstood at the time). I found, however, that his use of language is masterful and subtle. He is unpretentious but sensitive to the use of words. He has a command of Arabic that makes descriptions precise and bring the story to life.

He switches between styles in a way that allows him to embellish language in a way that mocks his characters’ tendency to grandiosity, and strips the language to a down-to-earth way when admiring his characters’ less pretentious virtues.

If Adel Kamel were still alive, what would you ask or tell him?

I think I would like to talk to him about some contemporary Egyptian writers. In many ways I think that the direction that one line of Arabic literature has gone picks up where Kamel’s work left off. The satirical touch, the challenge to language, and the way that the narrator is— how do I put this—self-conscious: all of these are elements of storytelling that I would love to have Kamel’s take on. I would also like to know about the manuscript he was working on!

Waleed Almusharaf

How relevant is the story of The Magnificent Conman of Cairo—set in the 1930s—to the realities of modern-day Cairo?

Extremely relevant. That was one of the main reasons that I wanted to translate it. Some of the more obvious connections are in the relationship between the classes, between the government and its citizens, and so on. Some things seem minor but for anyone growing up in Cairo they are really fascinating. The latter half of the book draws a picture of Cairo that shows relationships between parts of Cairo—artists, activists, and so on—that will be recognizable to anyone who has spent time in the city.

One truly remarkable aspect of the book that I found to really be ahead of its time (and that is related to all this) is his perceptive understanding of what would later come to be regarded as a formal critique of Orientalism. Kamel’s novel presents a critique of Orientalism: the existence of an East/Egypt that is imagined entirely by the West, the role of literature and art in that phenomenon, the internalization of that by the Egyptian elite, and so on.

Why do you think Egyptian Nobel Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz said this was an “exceptional” novel?

Now that is a question I would like Mahfouz to answer! My guess is that there are literary elements of this book that Mahfouz aspired to achieve. Among these would be the masterful balance between high Arabic, simplicity of expression, and an inexplicable way of making that formal Arabic sound very decidedly Egyptian.

I also think that Kamel has a way of getting inside characters in a way that Mahfouz probably admired (Mahfouz himself is a master of this, of course). Kamel captures the spirit of these characters but also the specifics of their psychology, mental processes, self-deceptions, rationalizations, contradictions, and so on. Finally, I think that Mahfouz was such a serious writer that he couldn’t help but admire the way that Kamel achieved all this with such a natural lightheartedness.

Amaretti: Bite Size Sweet Treats

Amaretti

By: Aliaa Elsheribini

Named after Italian Amaretti cookies, this dessert shop is here to fulfill your sweet cravings with a gourmet twist. Mai, the owner and baker, has been making the goodies from home since her return from the prestigious culinary school Le Cordon Bleu, and now she runs a booth in Arkan Plaza. We just had to try what everyone has been talking about, so we ordered some of their desserts, cookies, sumptuous cakes and more for home delivery.

Signature Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Amaretti is known for its quality and for its bite sized goodies that come in a multitude of flavors and in two forms, round balls, the bombs, and rectangular ones, the tarts. Notably the signature desserts are the Lotus Cheesecake Bites, Lemon Meringue Tart Bites, Caramelized Pecan Tart Bites, as well as the Lotus Cheesecake.

We started off with the Lotus Bombs as a way to prime our palates for what was to come. The croquant exterior rapidly melted in our mouths, blending with the smoothness of the creamy Lotus inside. We now get why this is a crowd pleaser. We then went for the Lotus Cheesecake, which was very rich with ‘Biscoff’ flavor, perhaps so rich that it took away from the ‘cheese’ part. It felt more like a Lotus mousse with a biscuit base, but a very tasty one nonetheless.

The spicy cinnamon smell wafted up from the box calling our name to open it, so we did, to find one of the most aromatic cakes that we have ever tried, the Carrot Cinnamon cake. This classic dessert was nothing short of flavor heaven, with both the carrot in the cake and the cinnamon flavor fully present in the frosting. The cream cheese frosting infused and sprinkled with cinnamon softens the cake with each bite, blending the two together. This is a cannelle lover’s dream.

We couldn’t miss trying the Vanilla Sprinkles, and what a great decision that was. Amaretti has perfected the Vanilla Cake. A two-layer spongey vanilla cake with a creamy vanilla bean frosting, we were hugging clouds. Moist cake, smooth topping, and divinely creamy, the colored sprinkles gave it a fun look and added that little sugary crunch on top without overwhelming you with sugar.

What all of these different types of cake have in common is that they are made with quality ingredients. They are rich in flavor but not really dense, taking away any guilt we might have had in indulging in that much dessert. Maybe we went on a bit of a sugar bender but it was worth it.

Ease of Ordering

There are two ways of ordering that are equally as easy, through WhatsApp and through the website where all the desserts available are displayed with a description of each. You check the displayed menu, you click, you order then you receive. When we ordered through WhatsApp, Mai was extremely responsive.

Punctuality: We ordered in advance before the weekend delivery rush and everything arrived on time.

Food Temperature: The goodies arrived fresh out of the oven! The cakes were still warm and aromatic and the bombs were cool and chilled.

Presentation: Amaretti’s goodies arrived in one piece, still standing tall holding true to their perfectly round forms with only the Vanilla Sprinkles being a little smudged by the edge of the box.

Packaging Quality

The order arrived in its distinctive black and white box scotched up at the opening for extra safety making the packaging secure, however the cakes needed double packaging to protect their form and to avoid damage.

Hygiene Standards

The boxes were smart and clean but no other precautionary measures were taken by the delivery man. We would have liked to see a mask and gloves.

Other Delivery Options that Appealed

Amaretti also offers Brownie Bites in three flavors and a collection of uniquely flavored cookies like Pistachio Lemon and Brown Butter Chocolate Chip. We’ll be going for the cookies for our next order, just looking at the pictures makes us daydream.

History Buff and Social Cultural Commentator Beshir Shousha

Beshir Shousha, YouTuber, blogger, and influencer quickly became popular with a unique brand of history vids and funny vids. His deprecating social commentary and witty humor can be seen on his Facebook and YouTube pages, Cima Awanta – Beshir Shousha.

CWM: Beshir, In the past couple of years you earned a remarkable fanbase. How did it all start? And what encouraged you to launch Cima Awanta?

The funny videos started after Egypt qualified to the Fifa World Cup in Russia, I made a video making fun of fans trying to speak Russian, and I shared the video on Facebook mainly for my friends, but it went viral. I went to Sahel, and did a video just for fun about the prices of villas, and how expensive they are, and that video also went viral and was aired on several TV stations. So, my friends asked me to start a page and post new videos, which I did and so far, I have gained a good number of fans.

The funny thing about sarcasm is that not everyone understands it; it’s a kind of humor that we don’t use often.

One day I was walking in Khan El-Khalili and I saw this sign for a Naguib Mahfouz museum, and I was surprised that there was one, so I checked it out and recorded a video of it then shared it on my page. Then I featured more museum videos when I realized that my fans were eager to see more videos of that sort. Especially that there are so many museums in Egypt that the majority of Egyptians know nothing about.

So, I have a wide range of followers – if you will – who like my videos. From Upper Egypt to coastal cities, with different levels of education, different age groups, etc. My audience is Egypt in general, and it’s very difficult to entertain such a wide spectrum of audiences, but I love doing it.

What kind of content do you enjoy presenting the most? And how do you choose your content?

The ideas for the sarcastic videos I make can be triggered by an incident, a conversation, or even something one of my kids said. As for history videos, it’s a different story. It takes a lot of research to make each video. First, I look for a place that is rarely visited, and I try to find a story about the place that nobody’s heard before. For example, if I talk about the Pyramids, I won’t talk about how they were built, but instead, I would focus on something like the theory about the connection between the Pyramids and the Orion constellation. So, I do the research then find a human element so people feel intrigued to visit the place.

Also, another video that went viral was about the bridge at the Giza Zoo, which was built by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, who also designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris. And recently the Minister of Agriculture and Ambassador of France signed an agreement to restore the bridge. Other actions were taken because of other videos I posted, and many of these ideas touch people’s hearts, and to me this is everything.

Do you think we should be concerned regarding a gradual vanishing of Egyptian cultural identity? And how do you think we could motivate Egyptian youth to be more involved in preserving this culture?

The Egyptian cultural identity will never vanish. It could sometimes get affected but it’s always capable of pushing away anything that attempts to cover it and see the light again. All invaders tried to impose their cultures and they failed. We took what we felt could suit us and we rejected the rest. Current influence is in the shape of books, internet, social media, etc. yet all of that won’t have much of an impact because Egyptians love life. We love to laugh, dance, sing… and you cannot beat that. You can’t beat the love of life.

Youth need to feel the culture and history, not just to be taught the history, but take pride in it and learn through stories and be in touch with their surroundings to realize the legacy they inherited from their ancestors, and will transfer to their kids.

With the coronavirus pandemic reshaping our everyday life at least temporarily, what is one habit you think Egyptians should adopt and one they should abandon?

I believe things will change, but no one could tell how drastically such change will be. But if there is one thing, I wish people all over the world would stop spitting. Spitting while walking, from the car; even sports players spit on the field, etc., children see it and they start imitating it. This has to stop.

One thing I would like to see implemented permanently and could be very useful is the usage of sanitizers in public places such as shopping malls, supermarkets, etc.

I want to see things go back to normal because as an Egyptian, I love to hug and kiss, we all do! We can’t do this now but I do miss it. I miss being able to hug and kiss my family, my parents, and my friends.

Tell us about your new project Garage Studio and what kind of content can your audience expect to see in it?

Garage Studio is an online show about the Egyptian media production industry. The show has two segments. The first one covers movies and TV series that made a breakthrough, not only in revenue but more importantly in the concepts and ideas they presented. And the second segment is the history of this industry, and different production seasons throughout the year such as Ramadan, as well as films that helped change some laws and had other societal effects.

So, in Garage Studio we will talk about our very rich Egyptian movie industry and its heritage, as well as the current Egyptian and international film production.

What do you hope to see happening in the near future?

I would love to see all museums administered under one umbrella. We have museums under the Ministries of Culture, Antiquities, and Agriculture, as well as the railways, and universities. They should all follow one management to unify and simplify decision making. One advantage to this would be the ability for the public to document their visits using photos and videos, which currently can only be done at museums administered by the Ministry of Antiquities.

And what could be better as propaganda or marketing than a regular person shooting a video with their phones or cameras – that’s the best advertisement. Even better than huge production advertising, because you get to sense the human factor through this person’s experience and documenting. Enabling that could also help generate an abundance of video content that will help minimize the effect of any bad reputation videos. Defeat the bad videos with good ones made by people who have nothing to gain except that they love these places and want to share their experience. Let the people show their love for Egypt.

Funny Man Amr Wahba Keeps Us in Stitches

CWM: Amr, what keeps you going and sane during quarantine?

I like making new videos, especially ones with funny content. It’s a great pleasure for me to help people laugh. I also play sports every day. And I like to bike so I try to do that each day right between iftar and the start of curfew hours.

We saw the experience you shared on social media when stayed in a very small hotel room. What if that happened during quarantine?

My God! I couldn’t even spend my vacation time in that room, and if I was quarantined alone in such circumstances, I would ignore the curfew and just leave!

Tell us about a funny situation you’ve recently been in.

Actually, a rather embarrassing situation happened recently. I was out biking when a group of people asked to take some photos with me, then right when I left on my bike I almost crashed into a child! I was able to brake quickly but ended up falling off the bike. It was so embarrassing but thankfully the little boy was okay.

Which of the comedians you follow make you laugh?

When it comes to Egyptian comedians, I really like all of Ahmed Mekky and Donia Samir Ghanem’s older works. And Hollywood wise, I’m a big fan of Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, and Will Smith, who is my favorite. As well as Jim Carrey’s older movies.

How is Formet el Sahel going?

That’s gone! First of all, there won’t be any traveling to Sahel this year, so motivation is low. Plus of course, Ramadan’s infamous sweets – kunafa, basboosa etc., which are basically irresistible for me. I try to work out as much as I can, however the calories that are burnt are not equivalent to the daily food intake!

Bring the Sparkle Back to Your Eyes

anesthetic Eye surgery in egypt

By Dr. Mohammed Abdulhafez

Many of us take a serious interest in how we look and how we feel. Proper nutrition and regular exercise are ways to enhance our personal appearance, and esthetic surgery offers an additional way.

Sun damage to the skin, smile, frown and worry lines, crows’ feet, and droopy or baggy eyelids are all telltale signs of age. Fortunately a plastic surgeon can help ease, or in some cases even erase many of these changes. This may include a skin care program, Botox or around-the-eye filler treatments, or it may involve eyelid surgery and skin resurfacing procedures.

You can achieve great success with cosmetic eye plastic surgery. Natural results, small and hidden incisions, mean that no one will know you have had surgery unless you choose to tell them. Your eye plastic surgeon relies on unique training and experience to tailor an approach that is just right for you. This is of vital importance because no two individual’s cosmetic needs are alike.

Do you need a facelift or will laser resurfacing, Botox and fillers be best? Should you have lower eyelid surgery to address bagginess, or would you be better off having a mid-facelift? These are questions that your eye surgeon can help you answer.

What can eye plastic surgery do?

Eye plastic surgery is not a fountain of youth, but it can effectively reduce puffy eyelids, bags beneath the eyes, wrinkles, growths and sun-damaged skin.

Will the surgery be painful?

In most cases there is little or no discomfort. I work with the anesthesiologist so the patient receives the most appropriate anesthesia, either local or general. Today’s short acting anesthetics make recovery rapid and comfortable.

What about recovery? How long does it take?

Following surgery the patient will need to give him or herself time to heal. Bruising and swelling are only temporary.

How soon can I go back to work?

In most cases recovery time is between five and ten days, depending on age and general state of health. Patients can return to telephone and computer work within 3 days.

How long does the improvement last for?

The results can last for many years. This depends on the unique skin type and how the patient cares for the skin after surgery. If the patient carefully protects the skin from damaging sun exposure, he or she will have a second chance at slowing down the sunlight –related aging process.

Are there scars after surgery?

The scars are hidden, or so small that they are not noticeable and by time they become invisible.

What non-surgical cosmetic enhancements are available?

Botox is a wrinkle reduction procedure that can reduce or eliminate wrinkles on the upper third of the face. It can be used to reduce the appearance of lines around the lips, across the forehead, around the corner of the eyes and between the eyebrows. It can also provide a small amount of lift to the lateral brows. I use only FDA-approved Botox.

Dermal fillers can be used to correct hollowness and static wrinkles around the eye, in addition to lifting the cheeks and decreasing the appearance of bags under the eyes, offering a non-surgical alternative to surgery.
