Beards are Back!

November 1, 2020

Beards are back and don’t they look great? Anything goes, from goatees to long, luxuriant masses. But, like any hair, they have to be carefully maintained to look their best. So, gentlemen, are you ready to jump on the bandwagon? Leading Cairo hairdresser Zakaria tells us how to make the most of this manly feature.

Beard care:

  • Have a professional trim every two weeks.
  • Avoid ammonia based dyes; they can cause sensitive skin to break out in a rash.
  • Have a full beard blowout for special occasions.
  • Comb your beard daily with a gentle brush, and apply alcohol-free wax.
  • Don’t wash daily, it will dry your beard out.
  • Apply a moisturizing mask every three days, but avoid contact with the skin.
  • Avoid using beard oils. They trap dirt in polluted environments and cause hair loss.

A total look:

Hair styles must complement the beard, they go hand in hand. Styling of the hair with the beard always depends on face shapes. For example, with round faces try to maintain a trimmed look from the top and keep the beard short in length.

Flatter your face:

  • Round face: Accent your cheekbones with an angled shave.
  • Square jawline: Shave or trim with sharp, precise lines near your cheekbones. Keep your beard short on the sides and fuller on your chin to take advantage of your square jawline.
  • Oval face: Feel free to go with any style you like. You can pull it off!

A Quick Chat with Emerging Polish Talent Zofia Stafiej

October 27, 2020

By: Aliaa El-Sherbini

I Never Cry, a Polish drama movie, premiered at this year’s 4th edition of El Gouna Film Festival in the presence of its leading actress emerging young talent Zofia Stafiej. We caught up with the shy and lovely Zofia after the press conference for a quick chat, where she told us all about the movie (do not worry, there are no spoilers ahead), her stay at El Gouna, and her future projects.

CW: Can you tell us more about I Never Cry and its plot?

Zofia Stafiej: The movie is about a 17-year-old, Ola, who has to travel to Ireland to get her deceased dad’s body back to Poland. It is the story of the journey of Ola getting to know herself better and also to know her father, which is not easy because he is already dead.

What made you want to play the character of Ola?

Seeing the first movie of the director of I Never Cry, Piotr Domalewski, made me realize that this is the cinema that I love and want to create. Also, the topic of immigration is important to me, so I was honored to be part of such an important film.

Do you think that the character Ola resembles the real Zofia in any way?

Of course, Ola is somebody else, a fictional character, but I have had the chance to work on her development in a very organic way, so I think that I have given her some of myself, yes.

What was the hardest part of playing Ola?

The emotional scenes were the hardest to play when I had to bring out raw emotions. I wanted to be believable.

Is this your first time in Egypt?

Yes, and I have to say that I love your culture.

What do you think about the Gouna Film Festival, and what is your favorite thing about it?

I love that it is under the stars. I have never been to a festival where we can dance, meet people, and watch movies under the skylight and the stars and I think that it is beautiful. And the occasion of meeting such great filmmakers during the festival is fantastic.

Have you had the chance to see any movies at the Festival yet?

Yes, I have seen the French movie Delete History, and today I am going to watch Never Going to Snow Again, and 200 Meters.

Instructions:

  1. Slice the avocados in half, remove the seed, and scoop out the avocado flesh into a bowl. Add the lemon juice and pinch of salt and pepper, then mash with a fork.
  2. Prepare the toppings for the facial features of the toast faces. Use sharp scissors to cut out shapes from the seaweed. You’ll need circles for eyes, zigzags for hair, and thin strips for smiles, scars, noses, and eyebrows. Chop the red bell pepper into small pieces to make lips, fangs, nostrils, and pupils. Slice the radishes for eyeballs. Slice the olives into rings for eyes.
  3. Spread the mashed avocado onto the toast pieces and decorate. Let your imagination run wild!

    3. Pour the melted dark chocolate over cereal treats and spread with a spatula. Allow to cool and set for several minutes.

Halloween Buffalo Chicken Skillet Dip

  • 2 tbsps butter, melted

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C.
  2. In a bowl, combine chicken, cream cheese, Monterey jack, cheddar, buffalo sauce, and ranch.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one pizza dough. Cut out triangles for eyes, and a mouth and bake for 12 minutes, or until the pieces are golden brown, slightly risen and cooked through.
  4. Cut the remaining dough into squares, place a cube of cheese on each one, and roll into balls. Place the balls in a ring around the edges of a greased pan.
  5. Fill the middle of the pan with the dip filling and bake for 35 minutes.
  6. Coat all of the dough with melted butter. Enjoy!

Apple Spider Web Pops

Easy Halloween Recipes Ingredients:

  • 2 large apples, stemmed
  • 1/2 cup chopped bittersweet chocolate
  • 2 tsp coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup chopped white chocolate
  • 8 wooden ice-pop sticks and a toothpick

Instructions:

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment or a silicon baking mat.
  2. Cut the apples lengthwise (stem to bottom) into 4 thick slices each. Remove any visible seeds but keep the core intact. Cut a thin slice off so they lay flat. Poke a small hole in the bottom of each slice with a wooden ice-pop stick and push halfway into the apple.
  3. Combine the bittersweet chocolate and 1 tsp of the coconut oil in a bowl and microwave at medium power for 30-second increments, stirring in between, until melted and smooth.
  4. Add the white chocolate and remaining 1 tsp coconut oil to another bowl and microwave at medium power for 30-second increments, stirring in between, until melted and smooth.
  5. Dip half of the apple slices completely in the bittersweet chocolate, letting the excess drip back into the bowl and place on the prepared baking sheet. Dip the remaining apple slices in the white chocolate. Let sit at room temperature so the chocolate thickens a bit, 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. Transfer the leftover dark and white chocolate to 2 separate small resealable plastic bags and snip a small corner off each bag. Pipe 3 to 4 dark chocolate concentric circles on the white chocolate-dipped apples and visa-versa.
  7. Drag a toothpick through the circles, starting the center and working your way out to create a spider web design. Refrigerate until hardened, 15 to 20 minutes.

Candy Apples

Easy Halloween Recipes Ingredients:

  • 400g caster sugar
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 4 tbsp golden syrup
  • A few drops of red food coloring
  • 8 chopsticks or lolly sticks
  • 8 red apples

Instructions:

  1. Remove the stalks from the apples, then put them in a heatproof bowl and pour over boiling water from the kettle to cover completely and leave for 3-4 mins.
  2. Remove with a slotted spoon and pat dry. (This removes the protective wax from the skin and makes the toffee stick to the apples better.)
  3. Push the sharp end of each stick into the stalk-end of each apple, making sure it’s firmly wedged in. Put a large piece of baking parchment on a board.
  4. Put the sugar into a large saucepan, add the lemon juice and 100ml water. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sugar has dissolved. Swirl the pan gently to move the sugar around, but don’t stir.
  5. Add the golden syrup and simmer the mixture (be careful it doesn’t boil over) until it reaches the ‘hard crack’ stage or 150C on a sugar thermometer. If you don’t have a thermometer, test the toffee by dropping a small amount into cold water. It should harden instantly. If it’s soft, continue to boil. When it’s ready, drip in some food coloring and swirl to combine then turn off the heat.
  6. Working quickly, dip each apple into the toffee. Allow any excess to drip into the pan before placing on the baking parchment. Gently heat the toffee again, if you need to.
  7. Leave to set then enjoy.

6 Things Men Hate that Women Do

Narrative Summit supports Women of Egypt’s ‘40 Over 40’ campaign

October 19, 2020
40 over 40

In an initiative to celebrate women over 40 who have achieved breakthroughs in their careers and contradicted stereotypes, Women of Egypt, an advocacy movement for the empowerment of Egyptian women, has launched the ‘40 Over 40’ campaign on Facebook, which aims to shed light on 40 women over the age of 40 who overcame massive obstacles across different fields and achieved success. Showcasing these women’s stories serves as an inspiration for coming generations and encourages them to continue to fight for their rights as women.

Lamia Kamel, CEO of public relations firm CC Plus and Founder of Narrative Summit, is an avid supporter of women’s empowerment and on the role her initiative has taken she adds, “Since the very beginning, Narrative Summit has been keen on our support of the empowerment of Egyptian women and the celebration of their achievements across different industries. We always make it a priority to host distinguished Egyptian women at every event – throughout our past four editions as well as our series of digital talks this year – in order to make sure that they have a platform to share their experiences and contributions to their fields.”

Commenting on the ‘40 over 40’ campaign Kamel added, “Narrative Summit was eager to support the ‘40 Over 40’ Campaign as it is representative of the Egyptian women of an age where they are at the prime of their capabilities, with their achievements and accomplishments crystallizing into something clearer. Encouraging women, by sharing their stories on a widely popular platform such as Women of Egypt, gives them a stronger push to continue to thrive and innovate. It also gives others examples to follow and stories that can inspire them to become more persistent in achieving their goals.”

“It is undeniable that Egyptian women have struggled for their rights and that, at any workplace, they often have to make double the effort to prove to others their competency and abilities. The National Strategy for the Empowerment of Egyptian Women 2030 affirmed Egypt’s commitment to implement women’s rights in line with the 2014 constitution, the international conventions that Egypt signed along with goals five and ten of the Sustainable Development Goals, pertaining to gender equality, empowering women politically, economically, and socially, and putting an end to practices that perpetuate discrimination against women or harm them, in both the public sphere and within the family. However, in reality, Egyptian women, especially in more rural areas, continue to face countless obstacles and we need to change our society’s culture towards women and work towards preventing all forms of harm against them, be it violence or discrimination,” Kamel stressed.

Alexandra Kinias, Founder of Women of Egypt, said, “It is imperative to break cultural and societal taboos that have held, for many years, women’s roles and missions to unfair standards, especially with regards to age discrimination. This is reflected in many aspects of our lives, to the extent that we are now suffering from a youth-obsessed culture. It is vital for a woman to feel comfortable and confident at all stages of her life and to believe that she has a full life ahead of her and that she can bring about change, start over, or pursue delayed dreams at any age.”

“Thousands of women are looking for second chances and new beginnings but they become hesitant because of these societal stereotypes that have become entrenched in people’s minds over decades. Through our cooperation with Narrative Summit – a known champion of women of all groups and ages – we have launched the ‘40 Over 40’ campaign with the aim of replacing outdated ideas with the notions that nothing is impossible and success has no age limit,” added Kinias.

8 Types of Boyfriends You’re Bound to Meet

October 19, 2020
Types of Boyfriends You're Bound to Meet

Prepare yourself for what’s coming because things are about to get real! After doing extensive research and studies on the matter we’ve found out that there are 8 types of boyfriends out there you’re bound to meet.

By Mariam Elhamy

Whether you’ll find all these traits in one person or multiple people, read on to find out what your future holds.🔮

The Jealous Type

He’s insecure, constantly overthinking and evaluating every situation, he checks your phone to see who you’re texting, he gets overly jealous when you talk to someone else and he would pick a fight instantly.

He’s possessive and controlling of who you meet, how you dress or act and when and where you go. Whether you’ve already met this type or yet to meet him don’t try to make it work because he’ll make your life a living hell.

The Good Guy

At first, he might seem like the perfect boyfriend, always giving you extra attention and bringing you nice things, but this type can sometimes be a bit of a pushover. He might not have a strong personality, he can’t stand up for himself or what he wants and he’s probably too clingy.

This type won’t hurt you but you’ll probably hurt him. You’ll quickly lose respect and interest because of his weak character.

The Sweet Talker

Your relationship probably started off smoothly, you were fascinated by him and he swept you off your feet. Only to start realizing he’s flirting with your friend, your sister or even the waitress! He loves getting attention from many women.

He has no respect for your feelings because he only cares about his. He’s egoistic and sometimes rude but he can smooth things over by talking his way out of it. This type is manipulative and will play with your emotions with every chance he gets so don’t get involved from the beginning.

The Lazy One

He might be loyal and kind but he loves being comfy and relaxed to the point that he never does anything at all. He’s always unmotivated so he doesn’t want to work hard or be the best at anything and he ends up being a leech and a liar, leeching off of his friends, family and eventually anyone he gets in a relationship with.

The Distant One

He’s not cold, he’s logical and he just doesn’t know how or when to express his emotions. This doesn’t mean that he doesn’t love you he just doesn’t show it. He won’t always understand when you’re feeling overwhelmed or sad because he’s probably not emotionally intelligent.

This type is hard to deal with because he often seems distant. Don’t expect any romantic gestures from him because he just doesn’t see the point of buying flowers when they’re gonna die anyway.

The Hesitant

He’s charming and you’re already great friends but whenever relationship stuff comes up he either avoids the topic or jokes about how he’s not ready for commitment and settling down. He’ll be there for you giving you everything you need but he’ll never get into something real.

The Overly Ambitious

He cares about his career more than you. Work always comes first for him and he’s always busy. The relationship will be slow because you never seem to meet since he blows you off for a meeting he has and it’s so hard to keep up because his mind is always on more important things and you’re not enough for him.

The Cheapo
