6 Egyptian Men Who Made an Impact

It’s International Men’s Day, and we wanted to celebrate by showcasing seven young Egyptian men who have made an impact not only on us but in their respective fields.

By Aliaa Elsherbini

Mo Salah

We have to start with the pride of our nation, Mohamed Salah. The professional football player made waves not only in the MENA region but in the whole world with his exceptional soccer skills and his radiant smile and cheerful character.

Born and raised in Egypt, Mo Salah plays for the Liverpool team in the UK yet still represents Egypt in any football games played by the National team. He made a massive impact in football, but most importantly, he made an impact on how foreigners perceive Egypt and encourage young Egyptian kids to dream as he is proof that hard work, talent, and persistence pays off.

He had the whole world chanting “Mo Salah,” and we’ll be forever chanting along.

Ramy Youssef

New Jersey artist born to Egyptian parents, Ramy Youssef, has gained international recognition with his Hulu comedy series “Ramy.” Besides the funny jokes and gifted cast, “Ramy” gained success for its representation of a first-generation Egyptian-American Muslim in the USA. The storyline is inspired by Ramy Youssef’s spiritual journey in New Jersey.

The show really highlighted with wit what many Americans did not know about Egyptians and the journey of citizens like Ramy, who were born and raised in a culture different from their place of origin.

We cannot wait for more from Ramy.

Omar Samra

If you do not know who Omar Samra is, then now is the time to get introduced to this inspiring adventurer, the first Egyptian and youngest Arab to climb Mount Everest. Samra’s achievement and determination were inspiring to the point where he turned into a motivator and public speaker to spread his belief that “impossible is nothing with hard work and perseverance.

After years of working in banking and private equity, Samra decided to leave it behind and focus on his passion for traveling and adventure. He has broken many records over the years, such as being one of the only 40 people in the world to complete the Explorers Grand Slam.

Samra’s adventures and TED Talks have been inspiring to many as he is very vocal about environmental conservation and youth empowerment leading to his recent title as a Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Egypt.

Sherif Fayed

Travel blogger turned social media sensation and travel company founder, Sherif Fayed, paved the way for all the social media influencers you see now. Fayed started vlogging back when it was not in-trend, and he made a name for himself as the trusted guide for all your travel trips and inspirational talker.

Through his positive energy, sense of adventure, and great quality footage, Fayed made us live vicariously through him for years as he traveled from one country to the other, documenting it all on camera.

Sherif Fayed is proof that you can turn your hobbies and passion into a business and make a living out of it as he is now the founder of a travel company called “PAX.”

Ahmed El Ghandour (El Da7ee7)

Ahmed El Ghandour, known as El Da7ee7 because of his acclaimed YouTube series under the same name, made knowledge and science engaging, and dare we say “cool”. The young YouTuber has reached around 18 Million views in the three years that his show was running with AJ Plus and another 26 million views on his own channel that has 1.09M subscribers.

El Ghandour highlighted science in a relatable and compelling way to attract a wide range of audiences that would, normally, scroll past the word “science.” With unusual facts, speed cuts, quirky humor, and a ripping choice of topics, Al Da7ee7 build a dedicated viewership and a fan base that is hungry for knowledge framed in a captivating way.

While the online show was stopped in June 2020 due to production-related issues with AJ Plus, it will be back soon hosted by its new home, MBC Shahid—in the meantime, we will go re-watch his old episodes on Youtube.

Ali Farag

Ali Farag is both muscle and brains. The Egyptian professional squash player is a Harvard graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering and the world’s number one squash player as of November 2020.

Farag represents Egypt in Squash and has been making everyone proud since he first pursued the game on a professional level, winning many titles inclusion the Squash world champion in 2018/2019.

He has established himself as one of the most-popular Egyptian squash players, to the point where he has famous nicknames such as Mr. Fantastic, Rubber-band Man, and The Raptor.

10 Ways to Pamper Men on International Men’s Day

It’s time to celebrate men and we are your man with a plan! Here are a few ways you can pamper your man and make him feel special on International Men’s Day this year. Whether it’s your dad, brother, husband or friend, show the men in your life some love because they deserve it.

By Mariam Elhamy

1. Write an Appreciation Letter or Note

In a text or a handwritten letter that is even more special, you can write the things you love and appreciate about your man. The way he helps you out or makes your life easier.

2. Make Him his Favorite Dish

The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, although it’s not exactly definitive it holds some truth in it. Make him his favorite meal on this special day.

3. Let Him Do the Talking

If he wants to give him his space, but if he’s the quiet type who holds everything in. Give him a chance to talk about his thoughts and feelings without interrupting, judging or arguing. He might not need advice only someone to listen, so just let him talk!

4. Book a Spa Day

Most men rarely complain, especially about how physically tired or stressed they are. Make your man feel heard and take him for a relaxing spa day to unwind and de-stress him.

5. Do Something He Enjoys for a Change

You hate action movies and you think football matches are boring so you never do any of that with your man. Make an effort to show interest in his hobbies and interests this time and go for his activity ideas.

6. Plan a Boys Night Out or In

What a man would love even more than boys night is you planning it yourself. Invite his friends over or arrange and buy tickets for a concert or a match, he’ll love the time alone with his buddies.

7. Take Him on a Nice Vacation

Take the day off or go on a short vacation with him on the weekend. An unexpected holiday is always exciting. Don’t plan everything and just let him decide what he wants to do.

8. Let Him Have his Undisturbed “Me Time”

Whether he likes spending hours on his Playstation, watching horror films or listening to music while he smokes a cigar on the couch, let him have it his way.

9. Arrange a Full Body Checkup

Show him his physical health is also a priority and book him the full medical checkup that he’s been postponing. He’ll appreciate it later.

10. Bring Him a Gift

They buy us gifts all the time so it’s time to repay the debt. Guys always love it when you bring them something they’ve been talking about or wanting to get. It shows you really listen and it’s always nice when someone else buys them they want.

What Men Hate about Relationships

Lebanese Cinema: Dahlia Nemlich and Pascale Seigneurie from Roadblock

When we talked to Dahlia Nemlich, French-Lebanese director, and Pascale Seigneurie, screenwriter and lead actress in Roadblock the short film, they both expressed their ceaseless love for their country and the message they want to send to the world through their film. Straight from Gouna Film Festival, here’s how the script came about and what inspired them to do this film.

Conducted by: Aliaa Elsherbini
Written by: Mariam Elhamy

Tell us a bit about the story of Roadblock

Dahlia Nemlich: The story is about a couple, Farah and Anthony, who are leaving the protest of Tripoli to go back home but they will be stopped by a roadblock and I’m not going to say the rest because it will be spoilers so you will have to watch the film.

Still from the film Roadblock – © Fatma Racha Shehadeh
Why did you choose this topic in specific?

Pascale Seigneurie: I had started writing the script one year before the actual revolution happened, the topics were already similar because in Lebanon things change but nothing really changes and reality caught up to the things that I had written in the previous version of the screenplay. Of course, we had to adapt a lot to make it fit into the exact frame.

An even earlier version of the script was in the civil war so it jumped through time from 1975 to 2022 to 2019 and the sad part is that it could fit at any of these times.

Dahlia Nemlich: The script was going to take place in 2022 in a post-revolutionary setup. We worked on the script 5 months before the actual revolution started, so we made a quick decision to change some stuff in the script so we could film the actual revolution and not have to reproduce or recreate it a year later.

How does it feel to have your short movie have its world premier at the GFF?

DN: It’s amazing, we’re super proud of it especially because we didn’t have any financial support or foreign co production. Marine Vaillant the producer of Dewberries Films, Lebanese production company, Pascale and myself, the dream team, really put a lot of effort in it.

El Gouna Film Festival is a very prestigious festival so we are super proud of being here and happy that it is physically happening. We got to meet a lot of new people and we’re working on a feature film together so it gives us a lot of opportunity to continue our future projects.

Does Farah’s rebellious side speak to you, Pascale? Does she resemble you?

PS: Yes, of course. I generally write stories because there is something inside me that has to come out. In the case of Farah, as you said she’s the rebellious side of me.

What does Roadblock mean to you? Anything you’re currently working on?

DN: The first layer of the film is the roadblock, which is the metaphor of the situation of Lebanon today, but it also talks about different identities and the capacity of communicating with these different identities.

You have a pure Lebanese who feels like she relates more to the country and you have the character of Anthony, whom I can relate to because I’m a Lebanese who lived in France but that doesn’t mean that I’m less Lebanese because I’ve lived half of my life there.

You also have the question of religion, gender and social background; this mix makes the beauty and chaos of Lebanon. That is the blessing and the curse of being Lebanese so in so many ways we can relate to the subject.

PS: I feel like this story tells the reality of Lebanon’s youth. In Lebanon, nationalism and the sense of belonging is not really strong because we have a conflict of identity. I’m currently working on a long feature based on this but not the same story.

DN: It’s a different direction with the same kind of concept and idea, but with different characters and a different storyline. It is definitely an inspired and aesthetic full feature.

How do you think the film contributed to the cause? What did it shed light on?

DN: I don’t know if it helped in any cause. I hope people can see from the film how absurd it is that we all live in the same country with so many different views. We are bringing the country to more and more chaos because we are not able to accept each other in any way that we are.

Another reason that will make people relate is that I think that Lebanese people like to see images from the revolution, it’s kind of heartbreaking but brings back lots of memories.

Roadblock
Producer Marine Vaillant, actress/scenarist Pascale Seigneurie, and Tripoli Film Festival founder Elias Khlat
If the chance presents itself would you turn Roadblock into a full-length movie? And why?

DN: No, we wouldn’t make Roadblock into a full feature. Roadblock is roadblock; it’s its own thing.

Ahmed Malek in The Furnace

Ahmed Malek

We were so glad we were able to take a few minutes out of Ahmed Malek’s super busy schedule. Between filming, the festival and watching movies we sat down with him to talk about his film “The Furnace” which was first premiered as part of the 77th edition of the Venice International Film Festival. Receiving a lot of praise for his role, Ahmed Malek plays an Afghan in the 19th century west Australian gold rush.

By Mariam Elhamy

How did it feel to be chosen for an internationally produced film, especially something as big as this?

I felt a big responsibility to prove myself, something I feel most of the time because I always want to give more and do more. This time was specifically hard since I was literally on new grounds in Australia, playing a character from a culture that is not familiar to me, in a new genre and a new market for me.

Being chosen for an Australian film made me want my preparation to be on point. I had to do everything I could give to this project and I gave it my best.

Ahmed Malek

This role is very different from anything you’ve done before. How did you prepare for it and how did you learn the language you had to speak?

I had to prepare in two ways, the first was the technical part. I researched the era that the film was set in. I play a young Afghani so I had to learn all about his culture, his country and the time he lived in, which is the 19th century. I needed to understand how things were politically, geographically, culturally, and spiritually with all its aspects at that time.

Another barrier was the language; I consider this the biggest obstacle for actors especially when pursuing acting internationally. In the film, I had to speak in three languages, Pashto from Afghanistan, another one closer to Farsi from Iran and I also had to speak in an extinct Australian language that was spoken by an Australian tribe at the time.

It was very difficult to find a coach who could teach me a dead language and it took me 3 months to learn. I wanted to perfect these languages so that I’m comfortable performing and I can focus on the acting itself.

Ahmed Malek

The second way I had to prepare was the human aspect of the character. I usually focus even more on this part, how the character is, how are his circumstances, how he lived at this period, his feelings, his fears, his dreams, and where he wants to be, preparing for all of this was even harder than the technical part.

I can never put into words how I pulled off this character, but I started by learning his language and his history then I gradually created an image of a real human being.

Can you tell us a word you like in any of the new languages you’ve learned?

A word called “malgari” in Pashto and it means friend.

What’s your favorite thing about the festival this year? Have you seen any movies?

I only attended the opening and the second day, which was the premier of The Furnace, then I had to go back to Cairo because we are currently filming. I’m planning to see a film called “Listen” which got praised by critics in the Berlin and Venice festivals.

I also want to see the film “Mika” and I already saw “The Man Who Sold His Skin” a very important film done by Yahya Mahayni who got the best actor award in Venice.

What is a Toxic Relationship?

Not every relationship is meant to be, so how can we tell the difference or know when to hold on to someone and when to let them go. Sometimes we get too consumed by a toxic relationship that we can’t even see how negatively it’s affecting us.

Today, we’ve decided to address the elephant in the room and explain what exactly is a toxic relationship.

By Mariam Elhamy

If you think you love them think again!

Love should never be the main reason you stay in a relationship because relationships require way more than the mere fact that you love them. If there is no respect, trust, communication, and appreciation, then the relationship will most probably end up being an unhealthy one.

Respect.

Any relationship should have mutual respect between the partners. Respect for boundaries, personal space, privacy, needs and wants, and last but not least values and beliefs.

If one or both partners don’t respect each other that way, like being too clingy when the other person needs some time off, or having someone be too nosy and not respecting your privacy when you clearly don’t want to share something, or making decisions for the both of you without talking it through first. These are all signs of an unhealthy relationship.

Trust is not given. It’s Earned

When lack of trust makes you unable to communicate what you feel or be able to be yourself without being judged then it’s pretty obvious that there’s something wrong with the relationship.

If you constantly feel hesitant to speak your mind or not comfortable enough to entrust them with something serious then maybe they hurt or betrayed you that you don’t trust them anymore.

Communication is Key

Not any communication is good communication. Barking random words at each other without actually listening to what the other person is saying and putting ourselves in his/her shoes is the worst kind of communication that can be.

If you don’t make an effort to really listen and understand what your partner is trying to say then this will lead to pent-up emotions and lots of passive-aggressiveness.

Appreciation can go a long way

Taking the time and effort to show your partner that you appreciate them with a gift, a small token of appreciation or even a kind word can go a very long way. It’s these small gestures of thank you are what really matter.

If you feel that you’re doing all the effort but your partner doesn’t share these kind words or doesn’t appreciate you enough, you should reconsider why they don’t do that.

There are so many types of toxic relationships, when you find yourself being lied to, manipulated, mistrusted, taken advantage of, belittled or betrayed, you should really consider leaving the person because it’s really unhealthy for you to stay in a relationship like this.

No matter how much you think you love them you might be much better off without them because at the end of the day if you feel alone all the time, what’s the point of the relationship?

Toxic relationships don’t necessarily have to be between couples. Relationships with your family, friends or even work colleagues could also be toxic for various reasons. If you find yourself consistently feeling sad, angry, anxious, drained or bitter about your relationship then it’s time to scrutinize it and reassess where you are going with it.

Entasher Brings Together the Marketing & Advertising Leaders & Seekers

With the rapidly changing nature of today’s marketing & advertising scene, it has become quite challenging for businesses to keep up and for Marketing & Advertising companies to target clients effectively. This lack of swift communication contributed to an overall hindrance in the process of matching a client with an agency. Therefore, Entasher was established to facilitate communication between the marketing & advertising industry leaders and seekers.

It all started with entrepreneur Mahmoud Azab, who had a vision of an altered reality where Marketing & Advertising companies can coexist and compete more efficiently. Putting an end to endless bureaucratic processes through which plenty of opportunities get stacked over shelves was the main motive behind Entasher.

His vision was achieved through creating a platform that allows agencies to share their portfolios, promote their services, participate in tenders, offer quotations, and effectively interact with prospective clients.

The platform encompasses all different types of marketing & advertising companies. From Digital Marketing agencies to market research companies, media production houses, and everything in between, Entasher covers all marketing & advertising needs.

Furthermore, Entasher exhibits the company’s portfolio, list of services, contact information, and previous work – and thus, saving both ends a significant amount of time and effort.

The fact that Entasher allows prospective clients to launch tenders with the touch of a button and eventually receive plenty of proposals from qualified marketing & advertising agencies has completely changed the course of the competition in the field.

It’s fair to say that Entasher has revolutionized the lead generation landscape in the marketing & advertising realm. The easiness of communication and accessibility they offer is setting an example of how digitally-forward every business process should be.
