Stay Radiant This Winter: Skin Care Tips to Keep that Glow

Skin Care Tips

Why is it that summer skincare comes so naturally to us, but when winter edges in we tend to let things slip? As the weather cools, the crisp air can drain the moisture from your skin, making it dry and itchy. Try these tips to keep a winter glow.

1. Avoid hot water. Lukewarm water is much kinder to your skin. After showering, apply a moisturizer that contains hyaluronic acid and ceramides to prevent your skin from becoming dry.

Skin Care Tips2. Keep your skin hydrated. Drink plenty of water, and consider using a humidifier to maintain the moisture level in your home. Switch to milder, gentle cleansers that don’t strip the natural moisture barrier from your skin.Skin Care Tips

3. Avoid peels during winter, and reduce products that exfoliate to once a week at the most.Skin Care Tips

4. Apply a rich moisturizing cream before you sleep. Remember that it will absorb a lot better if used on slightly damp skin. Keep lips from drying and chapping with a protective lipstick or balm.Skin Care Tips

5. Use a moisturizing body wash when you shower. Hands and feet also need special attention, be generous with a nutrient-laden moisturizer.

Meow Tours: Animal Rights Initiative Spreads Food and Love to Strays

Animal right events in egypt

Meow Tours is an animal rights initiative that organizes events to feed street animals in various neighborhoods of Cairo and Alexandria. By organizing Meow Walks, the Animal Rights Initiative aims to feed animals and play with them to spread the culture of animal welfare throughout the country.

Tours are announced on the Meow Tours Facebook page and anyone can book and participate by bringing meals or just joining in the tours for free. Meow Tours strives to obtain support from animal food companies and stores to donate the food or provide it at a low price.

Meow Tours takes all precautionary measures from social distancing, wearing masks, and not crowding during the tours to prevent the spreading of Coronavirus.

Some participants were asked for their feedback regarding the Meow Tours and here are their replies.

What encouraged you to participate in the Meow Tours’ event?

The reason why I was excited to participate the most was that I love dogs and cats in general, also I’ve been having a hard time dealing with cats, so I wanted to break the ice!

Furthermore, with the cooperation of my friend, we try our best to offer those poor strays’ food and the medical care required and it came from our belief that we have rights and responsibilities to fulfill towards those innocent voiceless souls. They have rights on earth as well as we do, the earth where we all live and it’s not about being merciful or humane, it’s all about being fair!

When I saw Meow Tours visiting an animal shelter which I am following, I was very passionate to join and participate outside my area, most importantly to spread awareness of their rights. Which is their main exceptional goal and target due to the problems and challenges we face every day due to the lack of knowledge and ignorance.

If we really want to live peacefully, we should keep an environmental balance by respecting their rights instead of killing them. Human rights are equal to animal rights and it’s not about us being humane or merciful, we’re just applying justice to the world.

Were the animals friendly and playful or were they scared?

There were two types of animals, type one was those animals who were extremely friendly, playful and enjoyed the attention and love they were given. While type 2 was those harshly abused animals who’s already built an image for human beings are cruel and they shouldn’t get closer. Cats weren’t playful, they came to eat and that was it.

How did people react? Did they encourage or despise the action?

We met many people who were extremely supportive and kind, they were also taking very good care of the stray dogs, they made my day.

However, there were others who said, “You better feed people first” and someone that I can never forget who said, “Did you come for the dogs?” I replied “Yes.” He said, “Ok good, are you finally going to poison them?”. I was astonished by how some people truly think and desire their extinction.

What would you like to be added in the future?

I would like to add some further awareness about how everyone should take his precautions and safety measures to avoid an attack from the animals and how should someone get to their level of understanding slowly to give them space so they can come and feel safe.

Spread awareness regarding the infection control safety measures by wearing gloves. The overall experience was exceptional, and I deeply wish to spread the idea in many cities!

Were there many animals?

Yes, a lot!

What’s your opinion on the day overall and in terms of organizing?

The day was extremely fun and outstanding, everyone was lovely and friendly. Organizing was great too. Animal right events in egypt

Different Smells Actually Shape Your Mood! Find Out How

Smells that affect mood

Day in, day out, our senses are assailed by a multitude of aromas. Some pleasant, and some quite frankly, we would rather do without. As infants, smell is the first sense we develop. Our noses have up to six million odor-detecting cells with olfactory bulbs being part of the limbic system and directly connected to the areas of the brain that process emotion and learning.

Huge amounts have been invested in pinning down the scents that will prompt us to stay longer, spend enthusiastically and even come back for more. But, marketing ploys aside, what do nature’s fragrances do for us?

Calm Us Down:

  • Lavender has a soothing, relaxing effect and is widely used to promote sleep. It is also said to improve memory.
  • The perfume of roses harbors an anti-depressant quality and reduces anxiety and stress.
  • Night-blooming honeysuckle is known to be a good stress reliever and has an uplifting aroma, add it to your garden or balcony!
  • The scent of green apple can ease anxiety and stress and has been attributed to relief of neck and shoulder cramps.

Smells that affect mood

Lift Our Mood:

  • Vanilla has the ability to reduce stress and anxiety and has been found to possess aphrodisiac properties as well.
  • Gardenia is a top pick for creating a sensual, romantic atmosphere – mark this down for Valentine’s Day.
  • Jasmine is said to encourage confidence, optimism and revitalized energy.
  • Chocolate is an all-time favorite aroma that impacts the theta brain waves, triggering relaxation.

Smells that affect mood

Stimulate Us:

  • Citrus smells have both a calming and energizing effect. If you need to focus on a task and stay alert and productive, a spritz of lemon, clementine or orange in the air should do the trick. The smell of orange is claimed to ease tension and aggression as well.
  • Try diffusing peppermint oil as an energy booster, or to clear a headache. This scent invigorates the mind, promotes concentration and stimulates clear thinking.
  • Even the smell of coffee can boost our brainpower. Good to know if you are watching your caffeine intake.
  • Cinnamon reduces drowsiness and irritability, so makes a great pick-me-up when you diffuse it in your workplace or study space.

Smells that affect mood

When you need a change of mood, be lead by your nose. It’s that simple!

AUC Press: The Boy and the Boy King

The Boy and the Boy King
A Children’s World of Imagination, Tolerance, and Friendship

Arthur D. Lubow, co-author of The Boy and the Boy King (AUC Press, 2020) gives us an inside look on a book meant to inspire and unleash the imagination and creativity of children. George H. Lewis is co-author and illustrator of the book.

Arthur is a little boy from New York. His imaginary friend is Bun-Bun, a stuffed rabbit (originally from England). Together they travel through the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum to another time and place and befriend the lonely boy king, Tutankhamun, King Tut!

The book addresses friendship, hope, peace, tolerance, imagination, and dreams. How are these issues relevant to today’s children?

In our view, the shortage of friendship, hope, peace, and tolerance stems from a failure of imagination. Armed only with their unspoiled, innate sense of wonder, two boys who come from different “time zones” wage peace, not war.

This book is a celebration of childhood innocence and heart-sourced imagination, which leads to friendship and understanding, something the world needs more of right now.

Why is it so important for children like Arthur and the Boy King to unleash their imagination?

Why do Arthur and Tut both end up embracing an imaginary friend? At the most basic level, it’s because we all need imagination. And we all need friends. We run the danger these days of imposing a dull, insipid, and banal world upon our children. It all comes back again to allow our hearts and imagination to vibrate freely.

Were you inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic children’s book The Little Prince? Is Bun-Bun a little like the fox giving advice to the little prince?

Yes and yes. George and I independently loved the idea of a child guided both by the cosmic pull of the stars and the love and admiration of a friend.

Why did you want to write this book?

We wanted to remind parents to guard their child’s imagination with all their hearts. There were teachers in both our childhoods who did their best to beat every ounce of creativity out of us.

Imagination and creativity are a form of intelligence that often go unmeasured, unappreciated, and unused. This is not a good idea in a civilization where most all health and wealth stem from creativity.

The illustrations are soft, rendered in gentle tones, the mood almost dreamy, magical, and fairy-like. Was this to convey the purity and wonder that exists in the realm of a child’s imagination?

I take great pleasure in showing the book. When I look into the viewers’ faces, I see that same dreamy, jaw-dropped, misty-eyed aura that you see in these wonderful illustrations.

If this book evokes that reaction—in different cultures around the world—well, maybe more folks will find and advocate for friendship and peace.

Through Bun-Bun, you describe the desert as a space that remembers and imagines, and point out that all humans are connected in the cosmos but that they don’t learn from their past and instead continue to wage wars. How much of these deeper messages, woven into the story, do you think children will pick up?

All of it. Not necessarily all at once. But we hope that readers of all ages will come back to the book again and again and find new things. Even we, as authors, are doing that. We’ve always said: never underestimate the intelligence of children.

If their lovely and timeless innocence is set free and allowed to blossom, children will teach us all more than we can ever imagine. Yes, there’s the old adage that “to teach is to learn.” But it’s also true that to learn is to teach. Watch. And learn.

Exciting, Original Arabic Content on Streaming Platform Viu

Ansaf Majaneen Wadi Al-Jinn on Viu

Streaming platform Viu has been the talk of the town with its two much-anticipated releases, Ansaf Majaneen, and Wadi Al-Jinn.

So we had the chance to sit down with Viu’s Middle East General Manager, Abe Shady Aboul Naga, to understand the process of choosing a show, the platform’s inspiring focus on Arabic and young content, and new projects.

By Aliaa Elsherbini

What, in your opinion, differentiates Viu from other streaming platforms?

We are focused to really connect with our target audience and be relevant to them. I think the audience segment that we focus on, which is the Gen Zs, has been seriously neglected when it comes to the mainstream media. That’s why they’ve been migrating to watching things online and on YouTube.

But in the traditional sense of media production, they are really neglected, and we try to remedy that, and address them. I wouldn’t say that we are the only ones, but I think we are ahead of the curve, and we are doing a pretty solid job in addressing that.

Why focus on Arabic content?

We are in the Middle East and we are Arabs at the end of the day, so we have to focus on Arabic content. I grew up watching Western content, not because I prefer Western content, but because I didn’t have the kind of Arabic content that really addressed my needs or made me think.

There is all of this really cool Western content, but when I look at Arabic content, it doesn’t compare. But if you grew up today and that content is available, then you are going to have a lot more Arabic consumption and I think it is our duty to really invest in this industry and the content we put out there as it is a big part of our lives and it shapes our understanding of everything around us.

Can you tell us more about Ansaf Majaneen and Wadi Al Jinn?

An idea could come from a pitch, or from a book that we liked, which is the case with Ansaf Majaneen. While in the case of Wadi Al Jinn, it’s based on an original idea.

Tell us about the process of choosing the content to produce or create.

We have an ongoing process where we try to build a slate. We get 100 ideas, shortlist them, and then take some to the market where we research and conduct focus groups to see which are the best.

We rate them based on their novelty aspect, then benchmark them against each other in rounds. We do around four shows in a row and compare to see which scored the highest. Based on these scorings we develop them further, do the script and the writing, then go into production. That is an ongoing process there is always content being evaluated.

We have these two (Ansaf and Wadi), but over the past three years, we have evaluated perhaps 60 different shows in-depth and in detail. These shows started close to two years ago, so if I want to release 20 originals three years from now, I need to start now because we believe that the more time you spend in the development that’s when you get the best out of the show.

Are there specific genres or themes you want to focus on in 2021?

We don’t say, “This year we’ll be doing a horror and a comedy.” We have a list of the kind of things we want to do, and we get submissions, and we look at them. We might have two supernatural shows coming up, or it could be one supernatural, and one social drama, it depends on what is scoring high and what is doing well.

We hear you have a new partnership with FOX+, what does it entail?

We always try to understand what the audience wants and what they are looking for. And Western content has repeatedly come up, as there is a lot of demand for it.

We wanted to be able to offer some of the best available Western content and fortunately for us, FOX has a branded service where they offer a lot of series, movies, lifestyle content, so we got into this partnership, and we just recently launched. There are always going to be new releases on a monthly basis from FOX.

What’s next for Viu?

Right now, Ansaf Majaneen and Wadi Al Jinn are what’s next. They will be coming out very soon, with Ansaf in January, and Wadi in February. Then we will be making some new announcements soon about upcoming originals.

Ahmed Mourad talks 1919’s Upcoming Film
