Food Presentation: How to Make your Dishes Look Stunning

food presentation

Ever heard of the saying The eyes feast before the mouth tastes? Food presentation is as important as how your dishes taste and to make your dishes look just as good as they taste, read these simple hacks for food plating and presentation that will indulge all your senses from sight to smell before you get down to taste!

By Mariam Elhamy

Choose the Right Plate.

Choose size, color and shape all in regards to what you’re serving and the portion. Don’t make the rookie mistake of using a huge plate for small portions, it makes the food look scarce.

The color of the plate should make the food stand out, white plates usually provide a neutral background for your colorful creations. However, other colored plates can work very well, depending on the color of the food presented.food presentation

When picking the shape, be mindful of the shape of what you’re serving, a square plate for lasagna and a round plate for pancakes works best. Use the rule of thirds by placing the item you want to highlight to either the left or right side of the plate, rather than the center.

Use the Clock as your Guide in Food Placements.

Placing the items should be as easy as looking at a clock, protein should be between 3 and 9, carbohydrates from 9 and 12, and vegetables from 12 and 3. Place saucy runny items first so that they can be held down by other foods placed on top or next to them.food presentation

Always Serve in Odd numbers.

Especially when serving small items like tapas, shrimps or bite-sized appetizers. This creates more visual appeal and a bigger quantity.

Don’t Overcrowd your Plate.

Keep it simple by focusing on one ingredient (the protein) ensuring that the other ingredients will play a complementary, supporting role. Stick to no more than 6 elements on each dish to prevent them from looking overcrowded.

Don’t Leave your Dish Pale.

Always create color and contrast by adding green vegetables, herbs or brightly colored fruits to accentuate the dish.food presentation

Use Height to your Advantage.

Don’t let everything just lay there, angle long flat items against the bulgier ones.

Diversify Textures.

Use smooth mashed potatoes with crunchy vegetables or crunchy nuts with meat.food presentation

Time for the Sauce!

Don’t just pour sauce all over your dish. Instead, drizzle over the main ingredient or create dots in the empty areas around the dish.

Use Garnish Wisely.

Don’t just throw in anything you have. You want to make your dish pop without taking away its flavors with strong pungent garnishes. Stay away from large chunks of raw onions or citrus. Use garnishes that actually match the flavors of your dish.

Finally, use a napkin to wipe away any splotches or smears from the edges for a crisp perfect dish.

16 Ways to Be More Productive

Ways to Be More Productive

Your productivity is low, you feel more tired and unmotivated each day and you can’t help but slack or put off work that needs to be done. We hear you! Here are a few ways to be more productive and take control of your day!

By Mariam Elhamy

  1. Start by setting small goals or tasks, by easily finishing these tasks quickly and successfully it will not only help you feel accomplished and energetic but also less overwhelmed than if you start with the longer more complicated tasks.
  2. Finish boring tasks that need to be done first. After getting warmed up by the small tasks, finish the boring ones because after they’re finished, you’ll look forward to doing the things you actually enjoy and not feel weighed down.
  3. Measure your productivity by checking off your to-do list. It should be like your personal KPIs, the more tasks you get done the more productive you get.
  4. Reward yourself. At the end of the day, if you finish everything you set out to do in the morning, reward yourself for it. Celebrating achievements, even by simply telling someone about them, is important for your self-esteem and productivity.
  5. Work on similar tasks together. For example, Don’t respond to just one email and then move on. Respond to all of them and then don’t check your inbox until you’ve finished other tasks.
  6. Time your tasks. By timing your daily tasks you’ll be able to understand what takes more time from you and what doesn’t so that you can actively work on improving your timing on each task.
  7. Find out your most productive hours. Everyone has different levels of energy at different timings. If you’re an early bird like me then focus on spending those glorious morning hours doing the things that require the most energy and vice versa.
  8. Manage your time. Group similar tasks together and place each activity in a slot that can accommodate it. Divide your day into time slots, by doing the things that are in the same area together or multitasking when your hands are free, you save time and energy, start doing time slots each day then you can fill them in a week ahead.
  9. Keep a distraction list. While working on one task that needs all your focus, whenever anything distracting pops up write it down on a list and check these later.
  10. Declutter. Did you know your physical environment impacts your productivity? Organizing and decluttering not only saves time when you’re looking for something but helps your mind feel more organized and decluttered.
  11. Walk. Yep walking really helps. It increases your alertness, blood flow and cardiovascular health, so you’ll be less anxious, more focused and more capable of dealing with stress.
  12. Ask for help! Being stubborn and trying to do everything yourself wastes time. When you don’t know how to do something just ask for guidance.
  13. Eliminate inefficient communication. Communication might be redundant, prolonged and inefficient. If someone is wasting your time because they refuse to understand, hand them over to someone else.
  14. Always have a plan B. For when things go wrong, stay on your toes and seize the day by always having something else in your pipeline.
  15. Work before feeling motivated. Which comes first, motivation or action? You need to take action in order to feel motivated, that’s just the way it is. So don’t wait around till you feel motivated and go out there and do instead!
  16. Don’t make decisions. Sounds weird right? Decisions are time and energy-consuming. Limit your decision-making process to only the important things. Deciding what to wear and eat should not be worth wasting your time.

There is no sure way to increase productivity. Increasing productivity is highly personalized and not all these tips will work for everyone; however, you can still choose the ones that do and make the combo that works best for you.

Why Your Relationship Didn’t Work and Whether to Fight for It: Part 2

why your relationship didn't work and whether to fight for it

We sometimes wonder if it’s time to walk away or hold on and fight with everything we’ve got and it’s these times when we can’t seem to make a decision, we need a bit of guidance so that we can finally make up our mind and take responsibility for our choice.

Find out why your relationship didn’t work and whether to fight for it.

The Intimacy is Gone

Sustaining never-ending passion is impossible and when the fire is gone things start to slow down. But if you feel no desire for and you’re even repulsed by your partner, it’s a major sign that something is wrong.

Stay or Go?

You need to be very open and communicative about this. Talk about how you feel with your partner, if they feel the same then maybe all you need is to try new things to reignite the relationship.

If your partner is not willing to talk about it or make any changes even if it’s a constant source of contempt between you, then you should consider whether this is something you’re willing to live with or not.

Your Emotional Needs Aren’t Being Met

As much as physicality is important, having an emotional connection can be a make it or break it factor. When you’re feeling lonely in a relationship and you’re resenting your partner for it, this will constantly bring up problems and might lead to the failure of the relationship.

Stay or Go?

Communication is everything. You have to verbal about your needs no matter how small or insignificant they might be, assuming the other person should just know is a huge mistake because you should both work together on building the relationship.

If you’ve discussed it with your partner and they make no effort to change or continuously dismiss your concerns, there’s no reason to wait around. For your sake, end it.

You Fight Incessantly

There’s nothing wrong with fighting it’s very normal, but when your fights become too big too often and it’s too much to handle that it’s making you stressed and anxious half the time you might end up losing that person.why your relationship didn't work and whether to fight for it

Stay or Go?

Think of your fights as ways to strengthen the relationship and move forward. Do they achieve a good outcome for both of you? Do you come out of the argument feeling you’ve moved one step forward? Does it bring you peace or do you still feel unsettled? The answer to these questions should determine your decision.

You Can’t Trust Each Other

When trust is lost it’s very hard to get back and you shouldn’t live with someone you can’t rely on. So how can you rebuild trust when it’s broken? (Yes, it can be fixed).

why your relationship didn't work and whether to fight for it

Stay or Go?

If you or your partner have made each other insecure it’s important to feel safe inside your relationship. Be forgiving, patient and honest while trying to regain the trust that has been lost. If your partner keeps repeating the same behavior and giving you lame excuses, it’s time to let them go.

Jealousy.

Some people get jealous more than others and some like it when their partner gets jealous, but if you get so jealous that you start doubting your partner’s intentions and actions then it becomes a problem. why your relationship didn't work and whether to fight for it

Stay or Go?

Possessiveness and control are not attractive qualities. When you’re overly jealous for ridiculous reasons it shows how insecure you are.

Obsessing over your partner’s circles, checking their phone and snooping on them, or having it done to you shows that you have to draw the line. You should know the difference between healthy jealousy and over-the-top too much to handle jealousy.

Finally, any relationship can be worked on but some become so toxic that’s better for both partners to give up on it and leave on good terms. It’s all about how you communicate and work on fixing the problem with equal efforts and not just trying to blame it on the other person.

15 Things you Need to Do If you Want to Be Successful

If you want to become successful

Success is hard work, discipline, risk-taking, and persistence. We’ve gathered up some info about the daily habits of the most successful people in every field. These simple habits could change your life!

By Mariam Elhamy

Habit #1 Rise and Shine

Get up early. When you wake up 2 or 3 hours before your actual day starts you can focus on doing more things you normally neglect like exercise, family time or just to plan your day. This will not only increase your productivity, but it will also make you more in control.

Habit #2  Do your Research

Not everyone is into reading but the more you know the better you’ll be prepared for anything. There’s always more to learn, room to grow and improve.

Habit #3 Healthy Body, Healthy Mind

Staying active not only helps refresh the blood circulation but also makes you feel better and be more confident.

Habit #4 Make Lists

Making lists of things you need to get done actually helps you be more productive with a goal to check off everything on your lists. It also helps you plan for the future.

Habit #5 Priorities

Learn to say no. Stay focused on your path and avoid distractions, whatever comes your way, if it doesn’t support your goals then push it down to the end of the list.

Habit #6 Get Inspired

Doing monotonous work or getting in a routine kills your creativity, affects your mood and overall performance. Know what inspires you and try to do it more often.

Habit #7 Take Risks

Fear of failure, of being blamed, of accountability, will drag you down and keep you stuck in one place. Don’t be afraid of change and keep trying new things every day. It is important to organize, plan, and set priorities, but without action, a plan is nothing.

If you want to become successful

Habit #8 The Circle

Be picky about who you choose to spend your time with. Keeping highly-motivated people in your circle will help you stay on track.

Habit #9 Time

Time is the most valuable resource you have so don’t waste it. Be picky about everything you choose to spend your time doing and make sure it will serve the future you.

Habit #10 Make Different Sources of Income

Don’t rely on one fixed income, have a couple of other sources from side-business or investments. This gives you a safety cushion for any unplanned downturns.

Habit #11 Networking

Successful people know the value of exchanging ideas with others through networking. Be open to collaboration and teamwork.

Habit #12 Write a Journal

Most people keep diaries for fun, or (as I do) to vent, a diary is much more important and useful than you might think. Write all your wishes and goals, even if they seem impossible.

You could also write down how you’re planning to achieve these goals and make a list of all the things you’re already grateful for in your life.

Habit #13 Unplug, Rewind

Use 10-15 mins of your day to switch off all your devices and reflect on your career, health and personal relationships. Having quiet time to analyze your thoughts reduces stress. Take a walk, meditate, digest the day and be ready for the upcoming one.

Habit #14 Confidence

Confidence is essential for having a positive mental attitude. It helps to improve your performance. Successful people believe in their abilities way before they get success. This level of confidence helps them get bigger targets in life with ease.

Habit #15 Never Give Up

Even if you stumble upon a few bumps on the road take your time and get back up. If you truly believe in something you’ll never give up on it.

If you want to become successful you simply need to focus on cultivating positive habits and take no more effort developing bad ones.
