With numerous things to do and different destinations to choose from in Egypt, here are some action-packed holidays where you can travel and do different things to create those sought-after memories.

Outside Cairo:

1. Going to Dahab.

A place that just oozes adventure and fun because of all the different activities you can do there. Going there for a nice holiday is one of the best ways to spend your vacation because Dahab is relatively close to lots of other exciting locations where there are literally countless things to do.

From Dahab, you can book a trip to Saint Katherine and climb mountains with friends or even make some new friends while you’re there. You can also visit the Blue Lagoon and Blue Hole areas for snorkeling and enjoy all the marine life surrounding you.

There are literally too many things to do in Dahab that you will find it difficult to not do something new, every day.

2. The North Coast.

It’s time to hit up some friends and go out to enjoy the weather and beaches. Most people tend to travel there during the summer but not many people consider the North Coast nowadays when the temperature is just right and people are not swarming the place.

A fun experience that can see you and your friends spend your time together with different social bonding games and just a few simple activities that make life there that much more fun.

3. Don’t rule out Ain El Sokhna!

A closer Red Sea destination compared to Dahab and the simplicity of the place and its activities is invigorating. Consider renting some jet skis and having a rip. Get some Vitamin D and enjoy a bit of sun tanning.

Lots of people will be vacationing there and so sleepovers and all-nighters are a must as nights could be spent with lots of family and friend gatherings full of great food and company.

4. El Gouna

Also one of those in-demand locations that are known for its lavish appearance and lifestyle. A visit is always refreshing and could make you feel like you’ve left the country. Go ahead and enjoy some fine dining and let loose with a few water sports and you will feel rejuvenated by the time you leave.

Inside Cairo:

  1. However, if you’re looking to keep things more on the down-low and stay inside Cairo, you have a few great options. Starting with Deregen, a horseback riding school that is near the Pyramids and is open 24 hours. Nothing to set your mood right like a nice horseback ride through the desert at night. You can also enjoy some of the special tea they make using firewood afterward to finish off your day, the right way.
  2. Strongly consider visiting the Wadi Degla Protectorate where you can spend some quality time with your loved ones. You can find pleasure in many simple activities including going on a hike with friends and family. You could also start a barbecue and enjoy the delicious food as you gaze at the mesmerizing view for a unique Eid experience.
  3. The Nile, the heart of Cairo. Needless to say, there are so many different events and rides available at the Nile and all of which will bring you tremendous pleasure. Go out on a felucca ride and tag some friends along. Make sure to do so by sunset for an enhanced experience. Nile rides are lovely and that type of thrill entices riders to enjoy themselves with the simplest of activities like telling stories or fishing a memorable Eid holiday.
  4. Finally, you can also try different sporting clubs like the Gezira Sporting Club. Simply put, family gatherings are a must and they are always best when they are outside the house. Sporting clubs are always lively in their atmosphere. Plus, there are countless activities for people of all ages to enjoy inside a sporting club.

How to Control your Sugar Cravings and What are Healthy Alternatives

control sugar craving

Ramadan sweets and desserts are irresistible! Especially with all the new creations and mixes. Certified personal trainer and nutritionist by IFBA Omar Fouad tells us how to conquer our sweet tooth and gives us a few alternatives to those calorie-packed sweets.

By Mariam Elhamy

Ramadan sweets and desserts are calorie-packed, what’s your advice for those who have a sweet tooth and can’t help it?

When you’re fasting for long hours, your insulin levels are usually very low. Breaking your fast with high sugar foods will cause a major spike in insulin. This will make you feel very dehydrated, because of the huge amount of sugar and carbs you suddenly introduced to your body. control sugar craving

Due to that sense of dehydration, it’ll cause you to consume more and more food when in reality you’re just thirsty. It’s an unending vicious cycle. To avoid all that, you can break your fast with foods that contain fibers and complex carbohydrates.

And If you really want sugary foods, you can definitely have them but try to do it between meals, avoid making it your first meal. You can also always eat sweet healthy snacks or treats.

There is nothing wrong with sugary foods, just make sure you have eaten a healthy balanced meal prior to it so you can avoid overeating. And try your best not to have it every single day. This will help control the amount of sugar you consume.

Tell us how can people control their sugar cravings during Ramadan?

When we’re fasting, the energy levels in our body are usually very low, this makes our body send off signals and orders telling us that we need some sort of sugar-based food. This happens due to the fact that sugars and carbs are the primary sources of energy needed for our body to function.

So, when it’s time to break our fast we usually crave unhealthy sugary foods. A way to avoid that is by eating dates first thing to replenish these cravings. After eating dates we find that we are not craving sugar anymore because our body didn’t actually want the sugar it just needed the energy to continue to function.

control sugar craving

Keep in mind that if you break your fast with a high sugar meal, you’ll find that you won’t be able to stop because your body doesn’t need it, all it needs is a healthy meal to replenish the energy lost throughout the day. control sugar craving

This is why I highly recommend dates, they are an amazing source of glucose that helps your body immediately bounce back and has the added advantage of healthy and needed nutrients. It also prevents you from entering that vicious and unending cycle of sugar cravings.

What are some healthy/less calorie-packed alternatives to sweets that people can eat guilt-free?
I would recommend the following:
  • Any kind of fruit you like
  • Yogurt (You can always add any fruits to it)
  • Dark chocolate
  • Dates with nuts
  • Healthy rice pudding

Here are a couple of healthy and satisfying recipes to try at home.

High Protein Snickers Oatmeal

Ingredients:

  • 50g oats
  • 1 medjool date
  • 1tbsp cacao powder
  • 150ml plant milk
  • 1 piece dark chocolate
  • 100g yogurt
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein (swap with cocoa)
  • 1tbsp peanut butter

Method:

1. Cook the oats, date, cacao and plant milk on medium-high heat for 5 min (chop the dates first!)
2. Meanwhile mix together the chocolate protein, yogurt and peanut butter.

3. Transfer to a bowl, add the chocolate and cover the chocolate with the frosting.

Healthy Banana Brownies

Ingredients:

  • 1 mashed banana
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons melted coconut oil
  • 3-4 tablespoons maple syrup (to taste)
  • 1/4-1/3 cup gluten-free flour (or regular) (60-80 ml)
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder (60 ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
Method:
  1. Mix the wet ingredients together(banana, eggs, coconut oil, maple syrup)
    2. Add the dry ingredients and stir until combined
    3. Pour into a baking dish lined with parchment paper
    4. Bake at 180 Celsius degrees (350 in Fahrenheit) for about 10-15 minutes

Going Nuts for Nuttiest Butters

Sherif Hafez Plays a Dangerous Role in Ragean Ya Hawa

Like every year this Ramadan is packed with TV stars and shows that keep us busy and entertained throughout Ramadan’s lengthy days with the best dramas. Sherif Hafez

We had a chat with Sherif Hafez who has had a full plate this Ramadan having done both Amr Aboulhana in Ragean Ya Hawa and a police detective in El Ekhtiar.

By Mariam Elhamy

What do you think of Amr? Have you ever played the villain before?

I had to change how the audience sees me and do the exact opposite of what I did in my role as Ali in Setat Beit El Maadi. I have played the villain before in a film called 100 minutes but it didn’t come out. The film showed a college student who slowly became a terrorist with the rise of events.

Playing the villain was not something far off from what I’ve done before, although Amr is different in how he is evil with his family, only cares about his own interests and is abusive with females. This was all very new for me.

Was it a challenge to play such a ruthless character?

It wasn’t very challenging for me. It was easy to execute but the hard part was being able to convince people that there might be someone like that out there in real life.

And that’s why I started to change the way I look, the tone of my voice, how I walk, how I move and even my looks. So that when people see me they don’t see Sherif, they see someone else entirely.

What do you truly think of Amr?

The only good thing about him is that he is honest. He told his wife that if he meets another woman that he likes he’d tell her immediately. Other than that he is terrible, he beats his wife and his sister and uses his mother for money. We intended to make him out as bad as he is because we wanted to discuss these kinds of conflicts between relatives.

Many families/relatives go through a lot of issues at home that no one talks about. How do you feel that Ragean ya Hawa has tackled these issues?

We chose this topic because there’s a lot of toxic masculinity towards females in our society. This cause is very common and the girls and women who have to live with this don’t really talk about it because it’s considered taboo to bring out conflicts that happen at home. Sherif Hafez

We wanted to shed light on this cause for women to see that this situation and these kinds of actions are not acceptable in any way. The show really dives deep into a lot of internal problems that happen in many families.

How do you think Amr can become a better person?

There has to be a clash or a really traumatic experience for Amr Aboulhana to go back to being a good person.

In real life, how does someone like this change for the better?

Everyone has to leave him. I always do this in my own life, at first I give advice and if it doesn’t work I step back.

These kinds of people are not smart, they think they are because they are narcissists. So just pull yourself away from them and leave them alone completely, they might change for the better and if not then at least their evil won’t hurt you.

How did it feel shooting in some of Egypt’s historical places? Tell us about your experience.

The locations we filmed were real and are not in Media Production City, they were actually at El Moez Street. I went inside an old hotel in El Moez Street which I had never been to before and I was surprised. Sherif Hafez

I’ve lived in Cairo my whole life, about 20 minutes away from El Moez Street but I have never seen these beautiful old cafes, houses and hotels with their arabesque designs.

I believe we have not really seen the true beauty of our country nor have we shown it to the world yet. I was very happy to be filming at such locations knowing that people will get to see them as well.

How did you prepare for your role in El Ekhtiar? Especially having to play the villain in Ragean ya Hawa then the good guy in El Ekhtiar at the same time?

Sometimes I had to shoot both on the same day but what made it easy is that there weren’t any difficult scenes with my role in El Ekhtiar that really tested my acting skills.

What do you think of the audience’s feedback on both shows?

I was very happy that the character worked but I got cussed a lot! Mr. Mohamed Salama had already warned me that this would happen, he said that if I get cursed at a lot, it only means that I have succeeded to portray the character well. So after he saw what people were writing about Amr he called me to congratulate me.

Did you relate to any of the characters that you’ve played so far?

Not really, but the closest I’ve come to having something in common with a role I played was in Kheyanet Ahd as Dr. Mostafa. He was very calm and collected when dealing with anything. He always wears a smile and he is never enraged to the point of blowing up. And I am all that. Maybe I could be a doctor at a mental health facility!

If you could go back and change anything in your life what would you do?

I would start acting abroad at a younger age, in Hollywood. And it wouldn’t hurt to learn to play an instrument or two.

Who do you trust the most in your life?

Anyone who loves me truly and anyone who’s honest enough that they wouldn’t just compliment me.Sherif Hafez

Did you want to become anything else other than being an actor?

No. I have some ideas for writing and maybe some of my novels could be turned into films. But I’ve always wanted to be an actor and that’s it.

How Not to Lose Your Muscle Gains This Ramadan

Certified personal trainer and nutritionist by IFBA Omar Fouad gives us tips on how to keep muscle gains with the right exercise and nutrition.

Scroll to see the video at the end

A lot of people are afraid of dieting during Ramadan, what is your take on this?

The most important thing you can do in Ramadan is to manage and keep track of your calories. This helps you stay on track to achieve your goal whether it is to increase your muscles or lose weight.

Another thing you can do in Ramadan is to monitor your timing of eating. This is necessary to avoid a spike in insulin levels that would happen suddenly due to the fact that you haven’t eaten in a long while. What I mean by timing, is “when” a certain meal is consumed.

Make sure that high sugar foods are not the first meal you eat and instead eat a healthy balanced meal when you first break your fast to avoid that insulin spike. You can eat sugary foods, it just depends on when you eat them, and in this case, you can do it in between meals after you’ve had a full balanced meal of quality carbs, proteins and fats. Monitoring when a specific meal is eaten is necessary when it comes to dieting in Ramadan.

Also, you have to control how much you eat in one sitting. Avoid eating too much on the first meal so that you are able to stay on track and reach your goals without any complications.

Here’s how to keep your muscle gains in Ramadan

Tara Emad Has Always Wanted to Play Rachel in Suits and Here’s Why

When Suits the Egyptian series came out we were super excited to see the original series portrayed in an Egyptian way with Egyptian laws and actors. That’s why we sat with Tara Emad to get to know her and how she played Laila (Rachel) in Suits.

By Mariam Elhamy

How did you prepare for this role? And how did you study the original character, Rachel?

I’m a huge fan of the original Suits and I’ve always wished to play a role in it, specifically Rachel Zane. 3 to 4 years ago I heard that Suits was being turned into an Egyptian version and I was hoping that they would pick me to play Rachel so when producer Tarek El Ganainy asked me to play Laila in the Egyptian Suits I was so excited!

I already know the original series by heart so I didn’t need so see it again. There were some aspects of Rachel’s personality that I wanted to portray in Laila, like how she doesn’t let anyone cross any lines with her and how she loved food, small details that only true Suits fans would notice. But I also wanted to make Laila a bit more fun and lively.

Did you have to study a lot and get into the world of law?

Since Laila is still a paralegal and not a lawyer yet I didn’t really need to study law as much as the other roles. There were not any scenes where I had to speak in front of a judge. Tara Emad

What other international series would you want to play a role in?

I really love Jane The Virgin and when it was finally made Egyptian I loved it even more.

What was the most challenging part of turning Rachel into Laila?

The challenge for me was to make people who have seen the original Suits see the exact spirit of Rachel in Laila. Laila also had to be closer to the Egyptian audience so that they would relate and understand her.

Do you see any differences between the original Suits and the Egyptian Suits?

There are differences for sure, for example the setting, the rules of the law and the lawsuits themselves because they had to be suitable to our culture and norms.

How do you deal with negative comments?

I don’t to be honest. When social media started to become the means through which people learn more about actors and celebrities who they love, and for celebrities to advertise and show their brand or their identity; it also became a place where anyone can write their opinion about anything.

When I read negative comments I try to be as indifferent as I can so it doesn’t affect me as much as it used to. Tara Emad

Tara Emad

Do you have any idea if there is going to be a part 2?

To be honest I don’t know but I hope so.

Tell us about your role in Tah2ee2.

Gameela is a very complex character and playing her in Tah2ee2 was a very new experience for me. She is not an outspoken person and when she speaks it’s usually based on a lot of thinking and evaluation that goes on in her head. This is something I really liked about her because I’ve always wanted to be a person who thinks more before they speak.

Director Mohamed Fathy “Shank” and I prepared for the role; we came up with a lot of references in order for me to get to know the character’s mood and ways.

What do you enjoy doing other than acting?

I love playing sports, doing yoga, reading, and cooking, so if I’m not on set I would be doing these things.

If you weren’t in acting what would you be doing?

I would have liked to be a ballerina, a cook, a surgeon or an ambassador. There are many things I’d like to be and that’s why I always say that acting is the best thing for me to do so I can be multiple people and live all these different experiences.

On a more personal note, what do you look for in a partner?

If I would pick someone to be my life partner I would pick someone who would be happy to see me succeed and would be proud of me and of the steps that I take.

It has to be someone with who I can talk and share my ideas, projects, thoughts and my life. I believe that being able to openly communicate is very important.

Would you say that you are a trustworthy person?

Yes, people can talk to me openly and trust me with their secrets.

Do you fall for people quickly or do you take a lot of time to trust someone?

It depends, sometimes you meet people and your heart just opens up to them and you’re able to talk to them about things that you can’t even tell people who are close to you. At other times I find myself very quiet and rarely opening up or talking so it depends on my mood or how my day is going. Tara Emad

Quickfire round:

On a scale from 1 to 10, how good of a driver are you?

I’d like to say that I’m a great driver so I’ll give myself an 8

A bit of both, I like to be an organized person but everyone around me is spontaneous so there’s a nice balance

Would you rather always be late or always be early?

Early, I like to arrive early

Do you have any secret talents?

I can cook. My favorite dish to make is a meat tagine with vegetables and prunes, which I’ve tried in Siwa and it’s the best dish I’ve ever had
