Anissa Hassouna has mastered the art of dividing her time between high-powered, demanding roles in our society and raising a family so well it serves as an inspiration to many. Cairo West Magazine finds out how she manages to handle such a demanding schedule in a one-on-one with Hassouna.

CWM: What are the biggest challenges of following a career and raising children?
AH: To keep the right balance in allocating the hours of the day between motherhood and your profession, definitely being a mother always comes first as the top priority.

What are the 3 most important things a working mother should always make time for?
Listening to your children, attending their school events and birthday parties and being there at bedtime.

How do you keep a family close when everyone has a busy schedule?
When they are still living at home you should make sure that you all meet at the end of day to exchange news about the day and consult on everything. When they move to their own homes you must call regularly and be keen to have weekly lunches with every one present, and travel together whenever possible to enjoy shared vacations.

What woman inspires you and why?
My mother. She was my role model, a strong, loving woman who raised four girls and supported her husband unconditionally in both good and bad times, in sickness, and in health.

What parenting advice would you give?
Enjoy every precious moment with your children while they are growing up, their first smile, step, word, hug, kiss…etc., time flies faster than we think and they become grownups overnight.

4 Important Facts About Breast Cancer

By Sherine Shaker

In our quest to encourage proactive self-care and as part of a series of articles aiming to boost awareness of cancer, Cairo West Magazine met with Clinical Oncology Specialist Dr. Wafaa Abdel-Hadi to learn more about breast cancer.

CWM: To start with, what is breast cancer?
WA: Cancer is the abnormal multiplication of a cell. Approximately, 1 in every 8 women gets breast cancer, which is about 12.5% of all women. However, if a woman is BRCA gene positive, like Angelina Jolie, then her probability of developing breast cancer throughout her lifetime jumps to 87%.

How can breast cancer be detected?
Early breast cancer signs are: a lump, change in skin color, redness or dimpled skin like an orange peel (commonly called peau d’orange), scaling of the nipple (in non-lactating women), and nipple discharge. Every woman should regularly do her own breast self-examination (BSE) monthly 10 days before or after her period. BSE should be done standing up in front of a mirror and while lying down. You should always check under the armpits (axilla) for lumps. Screening for breast cancer should start at 40 years of age by having an annual mammogram. But if a woman has a positive family history of breast cancer, she should start her screening  earlier.

Is breast cancer completely treatable?
Early detection is crucial for complete cure. Percentages for curing breast cancer have reached 98% especially for those who detect it earlier. There is a good informative website www.nccn.org (The National Comprehensive Cancer Network) for professionals and patients, which provides valuable information about cancer care and treatment.

Is breast cancer preventable?
There is an approach in cancer care called  “the anti-cancer lifestyle” through healthy mind, body and soul. Eat healthy/clean, exercise, stop smoking and have some spiritual bond with your creator or be at peace with your soul by praying or meditating.

For the love of Ain Bicycles

In an era prime for start-ups and innovation, energized entrepreneurs with smart and great ideas are always worth watching. We recently met with the duo behind Ain Bicycles, Karim Abdullah and Dirk Wanrooij, who identified a need in the market and worked to fulfill it. It is the simplest idea combined with the ultimate coolness: a custom-made bicycle. Customers can select the color and type of frame; add a Dutch wicker basket, beautiful locally-made leather grips for the handlebars, and many more accessories and personalizing details. Once you have the right bicycle, you wouldn’t want anything else.

The duo conceived of the idea for the startup in 2012 when they met through friends in Cairo. Karim, who enjoys long rides in Wadi Degla, had always had a love for bicycles; his love of cycling took him to Canada where he enrolled in a course on bicycle maintenance. Dirk had been studying Arabic in Cairo, and moved around on a bicycle which eventually broke, and he couldn’t get it fixed. He brought one back to Cairo with him on a trip home to The Netherlands, and wanted to develop making bicycles further.

The goal behind Ain Bicycles is to help accustom Egyptians to using bicycles daily to beat traffic with the use of the famous slogan #beattheza7ma.

The shop is located in the cultural hub Darb 1718, where their workshop is also located. To date they have sold over 200 bicycles, and it’s now becoming the ‘must have’ item. You could probably spot Ain Bicycles in most compounds and in Zamalek, where they have taken over the roads.

Egyptian Soprano Fatma Said Wins International Singing Competition

Placing Egyptian talent firmly on the world stage, stunning young soprano Fatma Said has won the 8th Veronica Dunne International Singing Competition in Dublin, Ireland, landing at the top of the competition. The competition hosted singers representing 180 countries, with only six singers reaching the final stage. Said performed three arias, and was accompanied by the Wexford Festival Opera.

A mere 24 years old, Said has already exhibited incredible ease in expressing a wide range of emotions through her singing, her transformation on stage has been described as ‘spectacular’. Since making her debut at the Cairo Opera House at the age of 14, Said has performed at various events and venues, including the Royal Opera House of Muscat and at the United Nations in Geneva.

Said won two prizes at the 7th Leyla Gencer Voice Competition in Turkey in 2012, in addition to various other awards and accolades and is also one of ten individuals worldwide, and the first Egyptian, to be awarded a scholarship to attend La Scala Academy in Milan.

“I can’t remember a time when I fell in love with singing. I always loved singing and I always loved music, particularly music, because I came to love opera at a later stage of my life. I must say that being at a German school in Cairo helped me a lot to develop a taste for classical music,”

Animals and Humans

Sculpture Exhibit at Capital Business Park

Sculpture is an art long-practiced throughout human history; the Ancient Egyptians sculpted statues depicting their deities and royals. Since time immemorial, this art has been preserved, and those who practice it are keen on using touch and movement to achieve a specific form.

Alkahila Art Gallery, in cooperation with Capital Business Park (CBP), Sheikh Zayed City, brought together a selection of sculptures by the finest creative artists in the art of sculpture: Said Saad Eldeen, George Bahgoury, Mostafa Al Ezaby, Ramadan Abd-Elmoatmed, Ammar Shiha, Alaa Mohamady, Ehab El Asiouty, Wael Karem, Hassan Kamel, Abdo Ramzy, Hassan Sadek and Rawheya Tawfik.

The exhibit titled”Animals and

Humans” depicts figures through the unique points of view of these talented Egyptian artists. Using the outdoor promenade of CBP as the gallery space has given audiences a more realistic experience of this hyper-realistic art form.

The exhibition took place last month at Capital Promenade.
