The Will to Succeed

Amany Khalil Earns a Medal at the Barcelona Ironman Challenge

Cairo West Magazine salutes this outstanding sportsperson for her impressive achievement in Barcelona last October. We catch up and learn more about what drives Amany Khalil to compete.

CWM: How does it feel to successfully complete the Ironman Challenge?

AK:  I never felt so confident or strong in my will power and gut feeling as I do now after crossing that Ironman finish line. The impossible has become possible for me, now that I have managed to win an Ironman medal, especially at my age.

Were you the only Egyptian to complete it this year, or the only one in your age group?

I was among 19 Egyptians to compete in the Ironman. Twelve men and seven women. I was the oldest of all. And from the women I was the only mother, the rest of the women were between 24 to 28 years of age.

How long did you need to train for?
It took me exactly 10 whole months to train for this race. I averaged 6 hours of training per day, beginning at 5am and ending at 7am and then taking a rest.  Afterwards I went to the gym around noon-time for two hours, followed in the evening by another two hours of cardio training. I aimed to be in bed by maximum 9pm. On Friday, it was the long rides which ranged from 3 to 6 hours of continuous cycling on the Sokhna Road,  with 5Km up to a maximum of 21Km of running afterwards.

When did you first become interested in sport and fitness?

I became interested in sports, in particular individual races, when I travelled to the States with my husband. I found people running in the streets early in the morning by themselves and I decided, “Why not, my kids are still asleep and my husband as well”, so I ran early in the mornings. That’s how I became a marathon runner. I picked up cycling in 2014, and the world of triathlons began to interest me. As swimming is included and it is my weakest sport, I decided to dedicate most of my training sessions to learn its technicalities correctly so as to apply them in the race.

What advice would you give busy people about finding ways to keep fit?

My best advice for busy people to keep fit is to manage your daily routine and find the right time for you to fit in at least a half an hour of sports a day. It will boost your system into performing better at work and home, and most important to improve your fitness and better your health. Consider it your daily medicine of life.

December Horoscopes

Whew… 2016 was quite a ride. Let’s see how we can wind up the year and pave the way for a great 2017. It’s the Festive Season, time to get together with friends, family and workmates, so let’s see how the planets look during December. The first week of the month brings a good deal of feisty energy with some strong Mars aspects in the sign of Aquarius. There is definitely a mood of change in the air, and action rather than mere words. Mercury goes retrograde yet again on December 19th, so except the usual glitches in communication, travel and with machinery. Avoid jumping into situations on the 19th, Mars’ entry into Pisces could provoke emotional reactions rather than clear thinking.

Birthday sign:

Sagittarius:

The month opens with a build up of energy in your third house of mental processes, short trips and communication. There seems to be a lot on your mind, but when it comes to putting plans into action, timing is key. Use the 12th to express yourself, you should have a unique viewpoint and good insight into an important matter. Take extra care with financial matters after the 19th, carelessness could cost you a lot! If you are celebrating Christmas on the 25th, a mood of friendship and bonding should make it a special day.

Famous Sagittarians:

Bette Midler – Singer and Actress

Brad Pitt – Actor

Frank Sinatra – Singer and Actor

Nelly Karim – Actress and Ballerina

Steven Spielberg – Film Director

Winston Churchill – Statesman

Aries:A born initiator, and even rabble-rouser at times, the first week of the month could see you involved in lots of social activity. If you have a pet project, this is the time to get your friends on board. The mood of the Festive Season may have you little light-headed on the 26th, so if you are confused about the status of a relationship, try to sort it out discreetly, rather than make assumptions. Consolidate your career position in the last week of the month while everyone else is recovering from too much partying.

Taurus:

Your Taurean determination will come to the fore early in December, with your sights firmly set on climbing the career ladder. Heaven help anyone who tries to block your path, the bull can become a bulldozer when the goal is in sight. By the 7th, your ruling planet Venus will add a healthy dose of charm to your approach, so remember to look your best and keep your manners polished to perfection. Mercury’s transit through fellow earth sign Capricorn will sit nicely with your no-nonsense and slightly ruthless mood this month.

Gemini:

Some strong planetary energy in Aquarius harmonizes with Gemini air energy, so anything linked to studies, foreign climes and travel plans should get a boost this month. Mercury’s passage through your 8th house could see you scrambling to collect on old loans, or raise credit to finance your plans. If you are out of town for Christmas Day it should be especially memorable, the 25th has some of the best aspects of the month. If travel is not an option, make sure you wind up your last days of the year with interesting people from a cross-section of cultures.

Cancer:

Difficult as it may be, try to keep finances and close relationships disentangled during December. However, if it is a business partnership, that may present a challenge. It is vital to be clear in communication with key people in your life this month, especially after the 19th when misunderstandings can arise. However, the 25th is brimming over with positive energy, so you may receive an unexpected gift or line of credit. Don’t let this affect your good judgment on the 26th though, keep your feet on the ground!

Leo:

Any form of close cooperation is supported during that important first week of the month. If you are thinking of a new business partnership, or relationship, you will need to act fast to make the most of opportunities. Your natural enthusiasm and leadership skills can inspire others; even if you want to wear the boss’s hat all the time. You may need to take care of health and workplace issues, frazzled nerves and miscommunication could be your undoing. Get plenty of rest and eat right!

Virgo:

Your ruling planet Mercury will throw the spotlight on issues to do with children, pets, hobbies and your creative impulses. Sounds good? Until the retrograde period that kicks in on the 19th that is. Then things can go a bit haywire, especially with Mars setting up a bit of confrontation when it enters your 7th house of significant others. Start the month with a plan, a simple one, and try to stick to it. Don’t try to tackle too much, and take note of your key supportive days around the 20th and 25th.

Libra:

You need to get things sorted a little on the home front. That could cover family relationships as well as the domestic environment. This is not a time for procrastination, because events after the 19th could tie you up too much to leave time for chores. Helpful aspects from fellow air sign Aquarius add an element of the unexpected to your romantic life. That’s not a bad thing, either! You could be attracted to somebody a little quirky or avant-garde this month.

Scorpio:

Your domestic life is at the fore as December kicks off, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, as you should have the energy to handle what comes your way. You need to keep your brain alert and rested because you will probably see an increased level of emails, meetings, and time on the road this month. Try to clear up important tasks before the 19th, as mix-ups and tech glitches could occur during the following days. Best day for home entertaining? The 25th is stellar.

Capricorn:

As December opens, you may follow a period of contemplation with a renewed vigor aimed at improving your finances. The Moon in your birth sign will give you all the support you need for this, so make a plan and stick with it. After the 7th this should start to bear fruit. Try to get as much done as possible before the 19th, when Mercury retrogrades in Capricorn. There could be glitches with tech, and household appliances, as well as missed appointments and delays. Take a deep breath or two, and make the most of an absolutely fabulous Christmas Day on the 25th, where the mood of goodwill is brimming over.

Aquarius:

Ready to rumble? The 2nd, 3rd and 7th will be days when you should be ready to pull out all the stops and get projects and plans under way. Friends may need your help with tasks, or you may get reined into a community effort of some sort. It’s not all work and no play though; Venus will glide into your birth sign on the 7th bringing enjoyment to your daily routine. You could be slowed down by unexpected circumstances after the 19th, but the 25th  has some great planetary aspects in your sign, so promises to be a fun day.

Pisces:

You are usually the kind soul who pours loads of time and effort into running around after other people, so if you feel a bit worn out as December rolls around you should sit back and let others pull their weight for a change. They can come to you for advice and words of wisdom, but try to leave the hectic side of any activities to others. Events around the 19th may be confusing and frustrating, just keep a low profile and try to ride it out. Rather than big parties, try for a more intimate gathering on the 25th with a few close friends.

Nahed El Sebaie Enchants us in A Day For Women

Last month, the new movie A Day for Women, directed by Kamla Abou Zekri, launched the Cairo International Film Festival to much critical acclaim. The movie, which centres around a poor urban neighbourhood where the youth centre at a local swimming pool decides to have one day a week set aside for women only, features an array of stars including Nahed El Sabaie, a familiar and popular actress from an impressive movie industry pedigree. Granddaughter of legends Farid Shawky and Hoda Sultan, her mother Nahed Farid Shawky is a renowned producer, and her aunt is actress Rania Farid Shawky. El Sabaie’s range covers a wide span of recent dramatic projects, from low budget to blockbuster.

In her career choices, El Sabaie has not flinched from playing controversial or unusual roles, such as the unfaithful wife in Sins of the Flesh, or Sabah in the internationally acclaimed art-house movie Ali, the Goat and Ibrahim, but she also enjoys a mainstream audience, for example in on-going TV epic series. In A Day for Women she gets her teeth into an important role, which as part of this ensemble piece, potentially has the power to initiate discourse on female empowerment at the lower end of the social spectrum.  Alongside such notable stars as Elham Shahin, Mahmoud Hemida, Farouk Al Fishawy, Ahmad Al Fishawy and Nelly Karim, El Sabaie brings to a life a fictitious situation that highlights real social issues but delivers them as enjoyable entertainment.

Cairo West Magazine managed to catch up with Nahed El Sabaie between her red carpet appearances and heavy shooting schedule.

The film Ali, The Goat and Ibrahim received three awards at the recent Venice Film Festival. What was special for you about being part of this film?

The fact that I really liked the story, and though I only had a small part in the film it felt good to be involved with it. For me what’s important is working with people whom I respect and have a good rapport.

Which of your recent roles has presented the most challenges in terms of immersing yourself in the character?

Definitely A Day for Women. The character of Azza offered the kind of complex, in-depth role that doesn’t come up every day, especially for female actors. It was the challenging aspects of the character that made me want to play her.

What are you currently working on?

I’m filming season four of Saraya Abdeen. There are ninety episodes so far! It’s a big commitment, but it’s a team I enjoy working with, and the development of the character I play is interesting.

CWM: Nahed, you come from a dynasty of famous industry names. Was there ever any question that you would enter the world of film as well?

NS: Actually, no.  It was what I wanted to do from an early age; I never had another dream.

What are your earliest acting memories?

At eight years old, in the 1990’s, I took part in a TV movie alongside my mother. It feels like a long time ago and I actually don’t remember much about it. The first real work I did as an actress was much later (2009) in the movie Tell Me, Shaharazad.

Which actor or actress do you most admire?

There’s a long list. I’ve been inspired by numerous actors; including Meryl Streep, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hanks are a few that come to mind.

Which roles do you enjoy playing most, comedy or something a little darker?

At the end of the day it’s not a question of comedy or drama, it’s about whether the role is a good one or not. I choose my parts according to certain criteria, the most important of which is the director. If it’s someone whose work I admire, I’ll always consider the role.

What moments stood out for you most while filming A Day For Women?

Well, shooting in the pool! That was a totally new and different experience, and made the whole project unique. Physically it was harder, but really enjoyable at the same time.

How was the rapport between the amazing cast –members of well-known stars on set?

For me, it was an honour to be working alongside such great names, and that was one of the reasons I wanted the role to begin with. Also the crew were really excellent; I knew a lot of them from previous projects, and there was a great vibe on the set.

What reaction do you anticipate from Egyptian audiences to A Day for Women. Do you think a film like this can have a big influence on ingrained perceptions in Egypt?

I would like to think so. It’s had an excellent reception from the critics, but until it’s released we can never know how the public will react. It would be nice to think that a film that deals with attitudes towards women in such a fresh and different way could have an influence on our male dominated society. When it was shown at the London Film Festival there was a very positive response; people loved it, but they saw it from a slightly different perspective. Less to do with the role of women in Egypt specifically, and more to do with female empowerment in a general sense.

How do you prepare for a new role?

I have my own techniques. I read the script over and over, sometimes going to sessions with my acting coach for help. By doing research if necessary, especially for a historical character, or possibly spending time in an environment natural to the role. By developing the character and ‘living’ with her for a period of time before shooting.

Who has given you the most helpful advice ever?

My mother has always been my biggest inspiration and also my guiding mentor, helping me choose the best paths in my career, and I have been grateful for her depth of experience and good advice.

Quick Fire Round:

  • Favorite item of clothing? Anything bohemian.
  • Early bird or late riser? I love early mornings!
  • Best holiday ever? Cannes Film Festival. Even though it was not exactly a holiday.
  • Ideal comfort food? Mombar… but I don’t know how to cook it myself.
  • Three items you always have in your handbag? My wallet, my keys, a bottle of water.
  • Yourself in five words? Someone who likes a challenge.

CIFF 2016 at Cairo Opera House

The stars were out at their brightest for the launch of the Cairo International Film Festival. CIFF 2016 was definitely an event on our calendar, and Cairo East Magazine loved every moment of the scintillating opening event. Cairo Opera House proved to be a perfect setting for CIFF, and the Red Carpet let the many stars in attendance shine in their stunning evening wear.

The program opened with a tribute to Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, who sadly passed away a few days prior to the event, with many celebrities choosing to wear black in respect of this. A fully packed auditorium then enjoyed a running feast of entertainment, with presentation of the Faten Hamama award to much-loved actor Ahmed Helmy being a high point. Official guests from several countries spoke about their delight at being present, along with prominent members of Cairo’s business and social elite.

A preview of films being screened during the festival was followed by a special screening of Kamla Abou Zekry’s A Day for Women. The film played to a very responsive and appreciative audience, which included the stars of the film as well, and proved to be a fitting close to a glamour-packed night.

Best of the best

What makes a hotel memorable? There is usually one special feature that stands out above all the rest, lovely as they may be. Cairo Central Magazine has selected top picks from hotels in Cairo and further afield. Feel tempted?

Best Steaks

Cairo Marriott Hotel and Omar Khayyam Casino

There are few things in life we can really depend on, especially in a fast-changing world where new enterprises spring up and often just as suddenly disappear. So it’s good to know that some things stay consistently reliable – such as a quality meal at the JW Steakhouse at the Cairo Marriott Hotel, where the ambience is pure class, the staff remember your name, and the food never lets you down!

Type of cuisine: American – a connoisseur carnivore’s dream venue.

Signature dishes: Top quality Angus and Wagyu beef, plus seafood like salmon, lobster, scallops, and king prawns.

Dishes sampled: As starters we went for a Trio of Seared Canadian King Scallops, which came in a mouth-watering sauce made from tomato confit and pine-nuts, and Iced Jumbo Prawns with Marriott Cocktail Sauce, and fresh brown bread, home-baked with caramelized onion. Both dishes were delicious but light enough not to spoil our appetites for the real reason to come here: the irresistible Filet Mignon (succulent and as easy as butter to cut through), with fluffy fries on the side, and a ten ounce Rib-eye Steak, deliciously seasoned and served with mashed potatoes. The accompanying vegetables were lightly cooked to perfection, and there was a choice of sauces to complement the meat if required.

Unable to resist dessert we chose All-American Apple Pie with a crunchy almond topping served with vanilla ice-cream – a oldie but a classic.

Other menu options that appealed: Lobster bisque, Pan-seared Scottish Salmon; Grouper with Ginger Lime Sauce, and Scampi.

Beverages: A great selection of international fine wines and liqueurs; fresh juices, soft drinks, tea and coffee. They also mix a great pre-dinner cocktail.

Décor: Sophisticated lighting, dark wood panelling, with sleek, well dressed tables and the kind of deluxe leather armchairs built to last a generation.

Clientele mix: Business dinners, couples, intimate groups, no children allowed.

Ambiance:  Upscale with an understated elegance, the Steakhouse is part of the JW Marriott brand and has its own signature feel, with details such as the serving trays decorated with bull-horns, and a non-intrusive jazzy soundtrack as ambient music. Expect impeccable service with the staff going out of their way to put you at your ease. There’s a dress code: ‘smart casual.’

Price range: Moderate to high
