On the Hunt Ice Cream

Mission: Find the tastiest, creamiest ice cream in west Cairo.

Contenders: Stavolta, Baskin Robbins, Mövenpick, Cold Stone Creamery, Fresh Food Market.

Baskin-Robbins

West Cairo Branches: Americana Plaza, Mall of Arabia, gate 19, Dandy Mall, Mall of Egypt, level 2

East Cairo Branches: Road 9 Maadi, El Tessaen Street 5th Settlement, Merghany Street, El Serag City Mall off Makram Ebeid Street.

Baskin-Robbins is synonymous with ice cream. With plenty of now classic flavors like Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Gold Medal Ribbon, and Rainbow Sherbet; it is a brand that immediately pops into your head when you feel a craving for a scoop or two. Because the ice cream is readily imported, you can be sure there will always be consistency of flavor.

Two rich classics we always seem to end up ordering on every one of our Baskin-Robbins visits – and those are plenty – are Jamoca Almond Fudge and Pralines ‘n Cream. Pralines ‘n Cream has caramel ribbons in a thick cream with (sugar-coated) praline pecans. Jamoca Almond Fudge is also made with cream, chocolate, roasted almonds, and for the kick: Jamoca coffee extract. Two go-to’s that never disappoint.

In Sa7el: Find Baskin-Robbins in the entrance of the Diplomats Village.

Mövenpick Ice Cream

West Cairo Branches: Mall of Arabia, gate 23.

East Cairo Branches:  City Stars and Sun City Mall

Mövenpick ice cream is marketed as a refined culinary creation, inspired by gourmet desserts. The brand claims “natural” processing, without artificial flavors, artificial colorings, or artificial additives. Pure Swiss cream is used in the making of this ice cream, rendering it extra rich. Some of our favorites are classics like Carmelita, Espresso Croquant, Swiss Chocolate and Crème Brûlée. But even Mövenpick’s fruity flavors reserve a bit of creaminess too, the Mango as well as the Blackberry sorbets are thick and velvety due to their high fruit content.

Cold Stone Creamery

West Cairo Branches: Mall of Egypt, level 2, Mall of Arabia, gate 3

East Cairo Branches: Maadi and Sun City Mall, New Cairo

Cold Stone is as fun to order, as it is to eat. From ice cream, to shakes, smoothies, yogurt and sorbet, this brand holds no bars on ingredients and flavors. The ice cream is made fresh every day in the store; ingredients are churned daily. When you order – and here’s the fun part – you can choose any number of toppings like candy, cakes, fruits and nuts, these are all mixed together with your choice of ice cream on a frozen granite stone. What you get is a mound of creaminess and bites of all your favorite toppings. This ice cream is no joke!

Start with the Raspberry flavor or the Coffee flavor as a base and take it from there! Cookies, gummies, brownies mixed in with either of these flavors on the cold granite, topped with chocolate fudge sauce! Yumm!!

Fresh Food Market

West Cairo Branches: Palm Hills Street 88, Sheikh Zayed across Greens compound.

East Cairo Branches: Point 90 Mall, 5th Settlement

Fresh Food Market makes its’ own ice cream. The ice cream is freshly churned every day. When you order, you will see that the ice cream is continuously being churned before your eyes throughout the day to retain freshness of flavor. Flavors are basic and practical: Chocolate, Vanilla, Lemon Sorbet, Mango Sorbet, Mixed Berries, and Yogurt. Slightly less sweet than traditional ice cream, Fresh Food’s take is a no-frills ice cream that hits the spot just right. It’s quite velvety, with a creamy pull to it!

Stavolta

West Cairo Branches: Westown Hub, Sodic.

East Cairo Branches: Korba, Heliopolis and 39 Road 23, Maadi.

Ahhhh… saving the best for last. The word creamy was invented for Stavolta ice cream, creamy creaminess galore! And not only creaminess, but taste as well! Stavolta is Italian Gelato, no wonder! What you’ve got to love about Stavolta is the element of surprise. Every visit brings with it surprise new flavors, flavors you never imagined before. Like Hibiscus, Halawa, Basbousa, Rice Pudding, Dates and Roasted Almonds, and more! This is the real stuff! Gelato contains 90% milk, whereas ice cream contains a 50/50 mixture of milk and cream. Also, gelato contains less air than ice cream, making it thicker and richer. It’s just smoother texture, fuller flavor, and bigger smiles!

Each branch makes their own flavors, normally 24 different flavors rotate continuously, depending on the season’s ingredients, as Stavolta uses locally grown ingredients for the seasonal flavors. Conceived in Cairo by two friends, Stavolta is an Egyptian brand that utilizes time-honored artisanal techniques in gelato making.

Keep your Pets Happy and Healthy in Summer

Summer means holidays, time at the beach and in the garden, for all the family. Don’t forget the wellbeing of your four-legged family members as well! Cairo West Magazine chats with veterinarian Dr. Ramy Eissa about the important things to take care of each summer. And for pets who need a great place to stay while you are out of town, we have rounded up a list of boarding kennels. Of course, you know your pet’s needs better than anyone, so do conduct your own research before taking a decision.

Summer checklist for dogs:

Ticks and fleas:

Summer is high season for insects of all types, and that means you need to be on the lookout for ticks and fleas. Check with your vet or reputable pet supply store for drops that can be applied at the base of your dog’s neck. Most of these applications last around 6 weeks, but should only be applied according to the instructions. They are not suitable for pregnant or nursing dogs, and young pups. The drops should be applied by body weight to be effective.

Most pet shops now stock dog shampoos with anti-tick and flea properties. Many of these use natural ingredients that repel these seasonal pests, and are a suitable     alternative for anyone concerned with the chemical properties of the drops.

Top Tips:

Citrus Juice: Fleas dislike citrus, so try sprinkling some fresh-squeezed lemon, orange or grapefruit juice on your dog’s fur (being careful to avoid the eyes) — and remember lemon juice can lighten dark fur.

Bathing your dog regularly is also important, as fleas are less attracted to clean animals.

Consider a peppermint or Neem shampoo for an added anti-parasite kick.

After the bath, use a flea comb to remove any remaining fleas.

Why not try?

A few drops of cider vinegar in your dog’s drinking water. This works well with cats as well.

After bathing your dog add a little cider vinegar to a jug of water for the final rinse.

To clip or not to clip?

We all suffer as temperatures soar, so imagine being stuck with a layer of winter clothing that you can’t remove. Dogs and cats need access to shade, and should never be left in a garden without protective cover. Leaving your pet on a balcony or roof-top is cruel and unacceptable. The rule of thumb is, treat your pet as you treat yourself. If a situation is beyond your comfort level, odds are that your pet will suffer as well. On holiday, if you want to hang out on the beach for hours with your canine buddy, makes sure that fresh drinking water is available, as well as a sun umbrella big enough for both of you. Commonsense dictates that you should only hit the beach together in the earlier part of the morning, before the heat sets in. And don’t forget the poop scoop!

Egypt’s climate is really not suitable for long-haired breeds, but this hasn’t stopped people going for fluffy, cuddly fur balls. Regular combing and brushing will help remove excess hair that is naturally shed as the weather warms up, but If you must resort to clipping in the summer months, take these points into consideration.

Leave at least one inch of hair when shaving your pet. This gives your pet enough coat to protect from sunburn and air-conditioned rooms. Dog coats have several layers, and these layers are essential to your dog’s comfort in the heat. Robbing your dog of this natural cooling system can lead to discomfort and overheating.

Cats are naturally good at seeking out places to feel cool or warm, and their bodies can adjust to various temperatures. Again, regular brushing to remove hair that is shed normally as summer sets in will make your kitty more comfortable.

Double coated breeds are those that have two layers of fur. The top layer is made of tough guard hairs and the bottom layer is a thick layer of fur called an undercoat. In the spring they go through a major shedding period known as blowing their coat. Much of their undercoat is released to make way for their lighter summer coat.

Single coated breeds can be clipped down to the skin and their fur will grow back very similar to the way it was; this is not the case for double coated breeds like the Husky, Golden Retriever and Old English Sheepdog. By clipping you can risk the undercoat growing back in an irregular way, with the possibility of matting. Please consult your vet before attempting to shave or clip these breeds.

Poisoning:

More and more cases are being seen on a daily basis, so before letting your pooch enjoy exploring the area, do your homework. Have there been cases of dogs being poisoned? Are there pesticides or plants that are toxic or potentially harmful? Inspect any closed area thoroughly before letting your pet have a romp, and for the safety of your dog, and in consideration of fellow holiday-makers, keep him on a leash when not on your own property.

If you see your cat or dog eat something that looks suspicious and it shows any of the following symptoms the first course of action should be to call your vet and get guidance. You may need to induce vomiting as a first step before you reach the vet, who will be able to administer suitable antidotes in many cases.

Sudden salivation, foaming of the mouth, gagging, and vomiting

Skin rash or hives

Pawing at the mouth

Sudden diarrhea

Sudden bloody vomit or sudden bloody diarrhea

Staggering, confusion, and circling behavior

Seizures

Sudden lack of appetite

Muscle rigidity, tremors, or twitches

Loss of consciousness

Difficulty breathing

In all events keep a sample of what was eaten. Poisons that are laid are often highly dangerous for humans as well, so avoid handling with bare hands, or breathing in any of the powder. Use a plastic bag or scoop, and wrap securely. Clear any remaining food that could be poisoned, seal well and dispose of responsibly.

Your pet is dependent on you for its wellbeing, and as a special member of your family, reward that trust and devotion with as much care and attention as possible. Have a happy summer!

July and August Stars – 2017

By Maeri Frances

Ah, the long awaited days of summer. How do the stars line up for your holiday plans? Can you catch up on much needed rest, or will it be a time to mix and mingle on the summer social circuit? Read on to see how the planets might make it a summer to remember…

P.S. Don’t forget, your rising sign plays a big role, so check that out as well if you know it.

Summer Birthdays:  Mohamed Abdel-Shafy (footballer) 1st of July, Ahmed Shoukry (footballer) 7th of July, Amr Shabana (squash player) 20th of July, Menna Shalabi (actress) 22nd of July, Ahmed Ezz (actor) 23rd of July, Karim Abdel Gawad (squash player) 30th of July, Ahmed Megahid Ramzy (footballer) 25th of July, Abbas Abou El Hassan (actor) 1st August,  Amr Waked (actor) 2nd of August, Youssra El Lozy (actress) 8th of August, Tamer Hosny (singer and actor) 16th of August

Our Birthday Signs:

Cancer: Let’s be direct, the month doesn’t open on the most brilliant of notes for Cancer babes, especially those born during the second week of July.  The 1st and 2nd of July could be quite stressful, so why not use these days to chill and catch your breath rather than tackling the hordes all battling for supremacy on the jam-packed roads to the ultimate beach resorts. You may still be feeling a bit grumpy on the 5th and 18th of July, so just accept that things will improve and stay calm. Your finances and mood could see an unexpected improvement as  the summer rolls on, and the 12th of August looks rather fun.

Leo:

As July gets under way you may feel frustrated if things are not panning out quite as smoothly as you hoped. There is a rather confrontational aspect on the 2nd, and you may find someone working against you behind the scenes. It’s best to stick to fairly routine activities for the first week of July, you will find plenty of opportunities to kick up your heels as the summer moves on. Mercury retrograde might upset your plans at times, but nonetheless you should be feeling invigorated and ready to start something important by the 20th of August. This should set you on a new career track if you play your cards well.

Aries:

You need a break. Seriously,  you may be feeling the conflict between home and family and career responsibilities even more as July gets under way. Even though the coming two months offer loads of fun, short trips and entertaining companions, this feeling will keep on niggling. Events may drive home how precious family relationships and kids are to you, now you need to see how to create the right balance in your life. Kids and hobbies can be a stimulus to get out and try something new around the 20th of August.

Taurus: You have plans for a great summer, and as often is the case, you need to secure enough cash to make sure you can carry them out in style. Don’t fret, as the summer gets under way you will have periods when cash seems to come quite effortlessly. You run the risk of falling into arguments when things don’t go your way, and may need to compromise more than normal just to keep the peace with family members and friends. The first week of July is especially volatile, and smart Taureans will avoid travel between the 1st and the 5th unless it is absolutely essential. Try to make your plans to get out of town before or after that period.

Virgo:

Other signs may have a sneaking suspicion that Virgo doesn’t really understand the purpose of a holiday, or how to relax. So, this is your chance to prove them wrong. This summer it may be less about dragging yourself off the overcrowded resorts and coping with delayed flights and tourist traps, and more about finding quality time… with yourself. You have been burning the candle at both ends recently, so treat yourself to some chill out moments where you can totally kick back and unwind.

Libra:

More than ever, it is proving to be that it’s not what you know, but rather who you know, when you need to get ahead. This summer should provide more networking opportunities than you have had for a while, and as you have an urge to forge ahead more in career matters  you should get out there and mix and mingle. Sometimes you need a not-so-gentle shove in the right direction, and the days around the 20th of August could provide just that when someone offers positive support. If you have a chance to hop on a plane  to somewhere new, don’t hesitate, it could be romantic.

Scorpio:

Much as you would like to join the throngs of happy holiday-makers it looks as though you will have to stick to taking care of business for much of the summer. There will be travel opportunities, but somehow work will never be far behind, ready to snap at your heels the minute you start to feel relaxed. If you can, avoid travel or important  meetings during the first week of July, it’s not the best time, for anyone, or anything…

Sagittarius:

Your freewheeling nature may be a bit under pressure this summer as you need to try to fit in with others people’s plans. How boring, you say, I would much prefer to cut loose and do my own thing! Ok, so who is going to foot the bill? One way or another you cannot escape your dependency on others, either financially or emotionally. This could be a summer that creates an important learning curve and chance to mature. Travel plans look best if you delay until later in August.

Capricorn:

Cautious Capricorns do not willingly put themselves into confrontational situations. But sometimes you just need to stand up for what you believe in, don’t you? That’ s why people who thought they had you pegged may be in for a bit of a surprise when you show a new facet of your character in the first week of July.  Your emotions may be quite fired up, but try not to say anything that you wish you could retract later. You have a sharp tongue and do not suffer fools gladly, even those you love! The dust will settle as August comes around, so get into the holiday mood while you still have a chance.

Aquarius:

Paradoxically, even though this is officially a holiday season, you may be enjoying your work routine and ongoing tasks to the extent that you are reluctant to ditch them just to follow the crowd. So, be your usual quirky self, do what feels right for you. Maybe you could pick up some better travel deals as the summer draws to a close, and why not? No crowds of tourists, or overpriced trendy locations. Off-season deals have never looked better, so pencil in the last week of August for a quick break to recharge your batteries.

From Playing a Psychiatrist to Writing his Own Scripts

By Francesca Sullivan

Viewers of the highly original and shocking psychological drama Thirty Days that gripped TV audiences this Ramadan are probably still reeling from the experience. Written by first-time script-writer Mustafa Gamal Hashim, the series featured Asser Yassin as a psychiatrist who finds himself drawn into a living nightmare.

Cairo West Magazine caught up with him on the set during the final days of shooting, to talk acting, writing and other creative pursuits…

CWM: Asser, How did the role of the Tarek the psychiatrist come to you, and what attracted you to it?

AY: I actually read for both roles, Tarek and Toufik (played by Basel Khayat), but Tarek was my preferred choice because of the challenges it presented. As the series goes on and he is under increasing stress, his reactions develop and change. Each incident has a different impact and discloses something new about him to the audience. It’s as if he’s in a dark room and there are punches coming at him from all sides but he can’t see what’s next. So it’s about portraying someone on the brink – this was appealing to me.

There’s a kind of philosophical question that we ask in the series. Every human being has a breaking point. If you put them under enough stress, no matter how saintly a person is there will be something about their responses you’re going to dislike, and you will ask yourself, how would I behave under these circumstances?

How did you deal with the intensity of such a role when you were off the set?

Happily we shot it all in one go. Having three or four days away from it was disastrous for me, because it was hard to snap in and out of it; subconsciously the character was still with me and I’d be exhausted. A bit like working out intensively at the gym for a long period; when you stop you hardly have the energy to do anything else.

Did you do any special preparation for the role?

I nominated a psychiatrist friend of mine, Dr. Georgette Savvides, to be our consultant for the whole series. I had sessions with her to discuss, for example, how I should behave and think as a psychiatrist, and what happens to someone under that amount of stress. In the script, Tarek is always reaching for another cigarette, but I didn’t want to smoke – even though that would actually have been easier. Firstly, I see that as a bad influence on such a large audience, and secondly it was more interesting to look at other ways of showing his emotional state. So we concentrated on his mood changes, increasingly aggressive behavior, he even develops a tic.

What are the challenges for an actor when shooting a thirty-episode Ramadan series, compared to shooting a movie?

It’s definitely harder since there’s so much more footage to cover – around eighty-four days of shooting, compared to four to six weeks for a film. It’s an actor’s workout, testing your stamina, knowing your lines, sometimes we shot up to twenty-two scenes in one day! When shooting film, you have the luxury of doing one scene over two or three days. In terms of character development the approach is the same, but the assistant director might help by not scheduling too many intense emotional scenes close together, allowing the actor some mellower scenes in between.

For the make-up department it was quite challenging because my character changes physically over the series, becoming more and more sleep deprived and zombie-like.

Speaking of a workout, how do you keep fit?
Well, I would like to go to the gym but in reality I don’t have time!

What kinds of roles are you most drawn to?
I started in drama and action, and I’ve successfully tried comedy also. Before the revolution, my plan was to do as many alternating film genres as possible, but since then the whole map has been reshuffled, even the star system. Television is increasingly the go-to place for actors, with production values much higher, on-demand viewing and more roles.

Do you think this has had an effect on the film industry itself?
Globally yes. Now that you can stream movies on your tablet, why go to a cinema to watch them? Of course actually being there is a different kind of experience, and the industry is doing its best to attract audiences with 3D and 4D effects. I believe cinema will stay, but definitely TV has taken a huge leap, particularly given the current economic and time constraints in many peoples’ lives.

How do you see the current state of the movie industry in Egypt?
Cinema has its own cycle that seems to run at around ten to fifteen years, with regards not only to actors’ careers but also directors and script-writers. So whoever was at the top fifteen years ago will be replaced with new blood, new mentalities and ideas. The system itself is changing, when I started as an actor the only way to get into the industry was through small, independent film or theatre productions in the hopes that a director would notice you, and those were scarce. Now with increased social media opportunities it’s easier – you can get noticed on YouTube and even have your own followers. And though that doesn’t necessarily translate to getting acting work, there are also more casting agencies and a higher demand. In the last couple of years completely unknown actors like Amina Khalil, Ahmed Magdy and Jamila AbouOwed have emerged onto the scene on their own merit.

Have you any projects in the pipeline? International film offers?
I have been given a few scripts but they usually involve clichéd stereotypes of Arabs, blowing people up or being involved in illegal organ trade! So I’ll just keeping digging until something more interesting comes up. My best option is to jump to international cinema from an Egyptian production that gets seen at film festivals. Egypt can produce great movies, and I don’t see why a film has to be political or dealing with a taboo subject to get shortlisted at a festival – it could simply be a really good romantic comedy. Since good scripts are hard to come by, I’ve actually been working on writing my own; I’m working on two right now.

Do you have a dream role, or a particular person you would like to portray?
Yes: Magdy Yacoub. For me he commands the utmost respect in terms of his total competence, lifetime achievement and legacy. What he will be passing on is something extraordinary.

How do you see your love of painting in relation to your life as an actor?
It’s interesting because these things are related. With acting you learn the craft and the techniques, and then you add feeling to them. Painting is a similar process; you learn about the canvas and the brush-work and the layering, and then you use these with emotion. So they are very relevant to each other.
