Cereal & Flakes is the First Cereal Cafe in Town!

You might wonder why on earth someone would go eat cereal in a café, but there is more than meets the eye with this venue. As a customer, you get to pick and choose from dozens of types of sugary and healthy cereals, along with an astounding 50+ toppings. We visited on a Friday for brunch and had a go getting creative with the combinations at this place aiming to be one of the best dessert places in Maadi.

Type of cuisine: Not quite a “cuisine” unless you’re under the age of 12, but this venue has every international brand of cereal available and allows you to customize your bowl! It is lots of fun. They also have their own signature combinations.

Signature dishes: Rice Quake, Flake This Brownie, Banana Island, Cinnamon Disorder

Dishes sampled and ingredients: We began our breakfast with the Cinnamon Disorder, a set combination consisting of cinnamon flake cereal, honey flavored milk, cinnamon powder, walnuts and apples. The crunchy green apple slices added a nice sour balance and bite to the sugary cereal, and they added a generous helping of chopped walnuts, which makes you feel a little healthier while munching. Portion size was filling, and that was only the regular size not the large! Each cereal bowl is presented on wooden boards with cute milk jugs. It makes you feel grown-up while you’re tucking into what is essentially, a child’s breakfast. Next, we customized a bowl ourselves – we choose Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal (a childhood favorite!) with some Choco Caramel flakes, milk, honey, raisins, and banana slices. It was heavenly – very sugary, but exactly the kind of treat needed when you want to spoil yourself. We also tried the Cheer Up bowl which normally features Fruit Loops cereal, strawberry milk, mini marshmallows, and strawberry sauce – we got to substitute the Fruit Loops for Trix, another childhood favorite, making this a very giddy, nostalgia-filled dining experience!

We couldn’t leave without sampling Cereal & Flakes signature Famous Ice Flakes, which are set menu combinations of cereal bowls with a scoop of ice cream on top. The ice cream melts and combines with the cereal into a delicious unconventional treat for the taste buds. We sampled the Rice Quake, a combination of Rice Krispies cereal, vanilla ice cream, Oreo, Kitkat, and caramel sauce. Needless to say, it was a sugar-packed explosion for the senses, a quake in every sense. After all that sugar, we felt the need to be sensible and order a “healthy” combination bowl of our choosing, so we capped off breakfast with a customized order of All Bran Flakes, honey, kiwi slices, apple slices, and regular milk. It was a sad attempt to trick our body into eating something relatively nutritious after consuming 1,000+ calories, but it’s good to know the option to be healthy is there!

Other menu options that appealed: Banana Island, it has Frosties, banana milk, Nutella and banana slices. Honey Bunny looks yummy as well with Honey Cheerios, banana slices and vanilla ice cream.

Beverage options: Lots of hot and cold beverages on offer – full range of flavored coffees and teas, iced coffees and frappes, soft drinks, smoothies, and fresh juices.

Décor: Light and bright atmosphere with wooden tables and colorful chairs, they also added a creative touch of having framed cereal art on the walls!

Ambience: Youthful vibe, with loud contemporary music on the stereo system. The ambience matches the menu in terms of a sugar rush.

Clientele mix: Young crowd and expats looking for a taste of home in terms of the menu offerings.

Price range: Inexpensive, considering the imported cereal and the location in Maadi.

Opening hours: 6 am to midnight from Sunday to Wednesday

6 am to 2 am on Thursday

8 am to 2 am on Friday

8 am to midnight on Saturday

Bridge Cafe at Sheraton Cairo

Neatly situated between the two towers of recently re-opened Sheraton Cairo Hotel, Bridge Cafe is just a few steps from the buzz of the reception area and lobby. An oasis of calm, it is perfect as a connection point, for a catch-up with friends, a snack, a sumptuous tea-for-two or even a work session on one of the several work stations. In a rush? Then opt for a Starbucks coffee and something from the tasty selection of items that can be bagged and ready to go in a flash. But why the hurry, we say? The tea on offer is from a range that connoisseurs prize the world over, the pastries and other treats deserve to be savored slowly and the ambience offers a soothing escape from the bustling city outside, so slow down and enjoy the moment at what could be considered on of the best restaurnats in Sheraton.

Type of cuisine: Whether you opt for food-to-go, or something to enjoy at one of the comfortable seating spots, you can choose from a variety of savory or sweet items. With, of course, the Starbucks coffee selection.

Signature dishes: Profiteroles Mille-Feuille, a blissful concoction created by combining two well-loved sweets. Ploughman’s Platter, an array of meats and cheeses with home baked bread. Anything from the bakery, the bread and pastries are superb. Beverages come with an individual selection of tiny home-baked cookies, a nice touch.

Dishes sampled and ingredients: Being thirsty rather than peckish we went for long, cool Piña Coladas. The best way to refresh yourself after a long day at the office, we say. Pineapple, coconut cream and a dash of rum, they went down easily. The drinks came with nibbles in the form of assorted mini-breadsticks, salted peanuts and a tangy dip. Just the right amount and flavor combination to complement our drinks.

Other menu options that appealed:  We have firm plans to return for a cup of the specialty tea, and one or two (at least) delectable pastries from their mouth-watering display.

Beverage options: Something for every taste and time of day. Great coffee, a connoisseurs’ range of teas, cocktails and mock-tails, smoothies, milkshakes, juices and beers. It’s all there.

Décor: Comfortable, contemporary without being too edgy. Warm gold, russet tones and rich wood. A little bit of ‘bling’ pays homage to the revival of 70s vibe that flows throughout the outlets.

Ambience: Cosmopolitan, lively but with enough privacy to enjoy conversations in peace. By 7 pm the lights are dimmed and live music sets the mood for the evening ahead. We enjoyed listening to excellent guitar on our visit. Thursday and Friday have a harpist to provide a soothing background.

Clientele mix: A mix of ages, nationalities and genders. Businessmen meeting up, groups of friends relaxing, people using the handy work-stations and grabbing a bite.

Price range: Upmarket, but still excellent value.

Opening hours: Currently from 6:30 am – 10:30 pm, but will extend to 24/7 in the near future.

Crave’s Beef & Bacon Burger

Being able to cook is a fundamental skill that every man should have at least a basic grasp of. Traditionally, men have always been involved in food preparation, from hunting and butchery to cooking and baking. We’re not talking about men whose hobby is to cook the occasional restaurant-quality meal for an audience of friends. Not even about the guy who flaunts his culinary skills by doing dinner-party duty once a week.

Learning to cook allows you to perform that crucial task of feeding yourself without relying on others. It’s one of those basic manly life skills, like starting a fire or changing a tire, and cooking at home is vastly healthier than eating out, especially if “eating out” means grabbing fast food. At home, you can control the ingredients used and the cooking methods. There are no hidden ingredients in your kitchen. The kitchen may seem like an intimidating beast for anyone with limited experience in it, but cooking meals from scratch should be creative and fun. Just put faith in your taste buds and have no fear, because it’s easy to know what goes well together. Here is an easy “man-friendly” burger recipe, a hearty sandwich that can be customized with whatever is in your kitchen.

Beef Bacon Burger Sandwich

Ingredients
(Serves 4)

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 4 beef bacon strips, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 & 1/2 teaspoons dried minced onion
  • 450 grams ground beef
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns, split
  • Lettuce, tomato, pickles for garnish
  • Optional 2 slices bacon, diced and mushrooms

Preparation

In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise and barbecue sauce. In another bowl, combine the bacon, 2 tablespoons mayonnaise mixture and onion; crumble beef over mixture and mix well. Shape into four patties.

Grill burgers, covered, over medium heat for 5-7 minutes on each side until juices run clear. Top with cheese. Cover and cook 1-2 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Spread remaining mayonnaise mixture over cut sides of bun bottoms. Layer with a lettuce, burger, and tomato and garnish with diced bacon, mushrooms and pickles. Replace tops.

All About Abu: Music with Heart & Soul

Sometimes it comes by chance, a mere coincidence, just by being in the right place at the right time. That magic moment when all of a sudden, something takes off and flies. Of course, already having won countless fans with his past hit Misafer, Abu has everything it takes to keep creating songs that touch deep within the collective heart.

Cairo West Magazine caught up with Abu shortly after his latest offering Talat Da’at was on repeat all over town after becoming the song of the recent Gouna Film Festival and delved into how it all came about.

CWM: Abu, what was the lead up to joining with Youssra and Tamer Habib, how did it start?

Abu: I had a performance about four months ago at Aurora in El Gouna. Tamer was there, he is actually a very good friend, I have known him almost two years, ever since I launched Misafer with Adewaya in 2015. He is a big fan.

At the time I was performing at Aurora I had started this song, Talat Da’at. The tune and the first verse were already written, but I didn’t know where to go with story. So I sat with Tamer after the performance and asked him to collaborate. The following day we sat together for a few hours and each suggested lines as we wrote it together.

I travelled back to my studio in Cairo to record it, but strongly believed it really needed a female singer. I looked at the options. I then felt that it had to be Youssra. Not just because she was a singer and actress. It needed her aura, her energy, her persona.

When I sent her the tune on What’sApp, just half an hour later she was there in front of me, at the studio. Throughout this whole journey with Youssra she never appeared like a diva; she is actually a very humble human being who believes in the energy of love.

For you, what does Talat Da’at symbolize?

It’s about love, romantic love. It is very relevant, regardless of your background or your age. Everybody has a love story, in the summer, by the sea. It’s all about the idea of love, simple love, not the seductive kind. Just a very simple human kind of love.

Is that why you felt it relates quite well to the Gouna Film Festival?

It wasn’t really so much about the location. It came about through Naguib Sawiris. He is one of the most genuine and loving people I have ever met in my life. He also fell in love with the song when he heard it, before its release of course. He then offered to produce the video for the song.

We agreed that it would be shot in El Gouna, and it was purely by chance that it coincided with the Gouna Film Festival. During the after-party of the Festival launch Naguib decided to stream the song from the private link on his mobile. It kept going… and going… and going.

In the end, both Naguib and his brother Samih told me, “You know, we have to sing this song at the Closing Ceremony.” It has become the ‘anthem’ of GFF. So, it came to the Gouna Film Festival out of love. Actually the whole of the Gouna Film Festival was that. It was really magical.

Looking back, I read that you had made a really big change in your career in 2012. What prompted you to switch from a corporate career and get involved in music?

Since I was a kid I have always believed in the power of words; how words can make a nation go to war. My dad is a Sufi poet, so I started off by writing my own poetry. This evolved into writing songs about equality. Lyrically, I suppose, a little like Bob Marley.

Then I started learning guitar to give those words a tune. I went on to start writing my own songs. Until around 2010 I used to just share them in private with my friends, but in 2012 I wrote a song called El Nas Mabter7amsh. It was very relevant to all Egyptians at that time. It was about politics, but also very personal. That was when I decided to just quit my job and pursue my dream of becoming a songwriter.

So, at that point, were you mainly a songwriter?

No, I was always a singer. What made me sing was that, “Bob Dylan made it, so anyone can sing”.

What is your favorite part of the creative process?

The approach. How I am going to approach the particular subject. Getting the creative approach before writing a piece.

So the brainstorming is your favorite part?

Yes.

You mentioned your song Misafer before. This is the second big hit you have had as a duet. Is there another one in the pipeline?

I have always believed in collaboration, be it two singers, or with a producer. It makes what we are doing bigger, and more interesting. I will continue to collaborate in the future for sure. Regarding the pipeline, I have ideas for bigger and bigger ‘shocking’ duets within the coming year.

‘Shocking’ duets apart, is there anything else coming up in your plans?

I have been asked to act, I have been asked to do many things. I am an entertainer, and I love playing music. I don’t have anything in mind. It is just me; doing my thing, living my life. That’s it.

Quickfire Round

Goal for this year?

To be as grateful as possible.

Music that is on repeat these days?

(starts singing Talat Da’at)

Person who knows all your secrets?

No-one.

Food that you can’t stand?

I eat everything!

Your favorite piece of clothing?

Simple. White T-shirt and jeans.

Secret to success?

Operating from the higher self. To have the agility to do whatever it takes, within a certain code of ethics, of course. To reach your goal you have to be agile. Also, as Sean Connery says, “Planning is over-rated”.

Country you want to visit?

Australia.

Ora Restobar in New Cairo

This fine dining nightspot offers a fantastic venue for both trendsetters and food lovers alike in New Cairo, and could easily be considered one of the best restaurants in New Cairo.

Concept: Restobar

Type of cuisine: Haute cuisine / contemporary dishes.

Menu overview: An extensive menu encompassing quick bar bites, appetizers, salads, entrées, a-la-carte fine dining dishes and desserts. There will certainly be something that will suit your mood.

Dishes sampled: Ora Restobar generously invited four of us to review the new venue. By chance, we realized that we were four people with completely different food personalities: the vegetarian, the picky meat-lover, the adventurer (real foodie), and the play-it-safe. We started with some bar bites and appetizers, each getting at least one item that would suit our taste buds. Their Bar Bites category has only fried options, and we opted for a few of them. Truffle Arancini – stuffed risotto fried balls served with Parmesan dip – made of aromatic truffle porcini mushroom risotto, simply delicious. Another Italian culinary tradition, Stuffed Ascolane Olives, which are mushroom-stuffed olives deep-fried in a coat of golden breadcrumbs. These irresistible little bites are served in a bowl of garlic potato dip. From the Appetizers category, we ordered the Cheese Platter and the Saffron Crab Fondue. The Cheese Platter was a nice display of a few cheeses, but the highlight was the apple-sauce that accompanied it. The Saffron Crab Fondue is a 4-piece dish. It is a crab meat mixture served in the crab shell. The creamy, saffron based crab mixture is coated with a Parmesan crust.

As we headed for our main dishes, our vegetarian option was the Homemade Mushroom and Ricotta Bigusto Pasta; fresh homemade ravioli stuffed with porcini mushroom and truffle ricotta in a creamy sauce topped with shredded Parmesan. Under Ora Specials, we chose the Diane Beef Medallion and the French Duck. The Medallion – two cuts of Certified Angus Beef (guaranteed quality) medium cooked, topped with Cognac Diane sauce, accompanied by peas, carrots, and pommes dauphine, which are deep fried crisp potato puffs. The taste, cooking aromas and mouth-feel of fats are crucial to the lure of meat lover. French Duck – sous vide duck breast (slightly crispy coat) topped with orange dressing infused with Grand Mariner Cointreau and honey and accompanied by roasted potato wedges. This dish is best paired with one of the house signature drinks, the Forbidden Fruit Cocktail. One thing we all agreed on is that our mission was not fully accomplished without the dessert. So we went for a sweet medley of Baileys Oreo Parfait, Molton Salted Caramel Cake (highly recommended), Apple Tart and the Nougat Glace. Overall, it was a very pleasant evening.

Other menu options that appealed: Chicken Madeira – grilled chicken on Madeira wine sauce served with potato terrine. This dish is harmonized with a glass of Merlot wine.

Décor: Ora is a luxurious yet inviting and comfortable restobar with indoor and outdoor seating areas. The interior is elegant, modern and sleek. As you walk in to your right there is a mounted wine cellar wall displaying wine bottles. To your left there is a leafy green back wall contrasting with the glossy, clean modern style. The indoor area consists of high tables, a bar counter with high stools and an elevated seating area.  The outdoor area consists of very comfortable seating arrangements and the bar. The landscaping is a work of art. A second bar is featured at the end of this beautifully arranged garden of palm trees. Do not miss their “fireplace table” that will keep you warm on the colder evenings.

Beverages: A buzzing bar with a large selection of artisan drinks to choose from, all created by master mixologists.

Clientele mix: Expect to bump into familiar faces.

Nestled in a bustling side street in Degla, this spot is perfect for a quick caffeine fix and catch up with your friends. We visited this place aiming to be the best coffee place in Maadi on a lazy Saturday afternoon, and the brunch menu hit the spot.

Signature drinks: Flat White, Peanut Butter & Caramel Frappuccino

Dishes sampled and ingredients: Upon arrival, we ordered the fresh mango juice and a large American coffee to tide us over until the food arrived. The juice was a generous portion with enough to spare, freshly squeezed and tangy. The American coffee was big enough for two, using proper coffee beans ground on the premises – nothing too bitter or burnt as you are prone to receiving in many establishments. The Ultimate Breakfast was a feast for both the belly and the eyes! A large cheese omelet with two slices of thick brown toast and yummy sides – fresh chestnut mushrooms, two deliciously seasoned sausages, and the best sautéed onions we ever tasted. The chef revealed his secret ingredient – pomegranate syrup. My dining companion tried the Mozzarella Pesto Panini, a delicious toasted sandwich with homemade basil pesto and generous helpings of buffalo mozzarella cheese. The signature cappuccino is a must-have, a huge serving with perfectly foamed milk and a lovely hint of nutty flavor. The fruit smoothies menu is also extensive, we tried a fruit that is in season, the Pomegranate smoothie, bursting with tanginess and balanced with the right amount of sweet. The servers and baristas are very attentive and willing to alter any drink to your liking, which is very much appreciated for those of us who don’t like a lot of sugar.

Other menu options that appealed: Selection of sandwiches including Turkey & Cheese, Salami, Roast Beef, Oatmeal with Fruit & Nuts, and a large array of homemade pastries and desserts.

Beverage options: Extensive coffee options, fresh juices and smoothies, and soft drinks.

Décor: Bright and colorful wooden chairs and tables, including both indoor and outdoor seating.

Ambience: Laid-back and intimate, very low-key with great music on the sound system. This is the perfect place to catch up and have a conversation. Service is efficient without being intrusive, and you’ll want to come back.

Clientele mix: Young crowd, and locals from the neighborhood who become regulars.

Price range: Inexpensive without skimping on the quality! A bargain.

Your Horoscope in November 2017

By Maeri Frances

Tap into your intuition this November, but with loquacious Mercury entering Sagittarius you may need to think twice before voicing your perceptions. Venus and Jupiter in Scorpio this month will bring new meaning to the word ‘allure’.  Keep clothes that make a powerful statement to the front of your wardrobe, even your oldest jeans can deliver the message when you wear them the right way. The mood set by a trine by Saturn to Uranus gives potential for change, but it is restrained by the status quo. Bear that in mind if things seem to be moving too slowly. Don’t forget, your rising sign plays a big role, so check that out as well if you know it.

November Birthdays:  Emma Stone 6th of November (actress), Lorde 7th of November (singer), Leonardo Di Caprio 11th of November (actor), Ryan Gosling 12th of November (actor), Dr Magdi Yacoub 16th of November (heart surgeon and philanthropist), Mona Zaki  18th of November (actress), Ahmed Helmi 18th of November (actor), Miley Cyrus 23rd of November (singer).

Scorpio

If ever there was a month to make your move, this is it. With both Venus and Jupiter raining blessings upon you it seems that you are living a charmed life. Take care of your personal appearance, and invest in some new items for your wardrobe. Just remind yourself that too much of a good thing can be as troublesome as too little. Resist the urge to overindulge, in anything. The kilos can literally pile on before you notice them, and they will be hard to budge.

Libra

Romantic relationships could be a bit tumultuous during the first week. Avoid getting drawn into arguments over trivial issues around the 4th, it isn’t worth the headache. After the 7th you may see an improvement in your income, but you will likely be attracted to shopping malls as well. Easy come, easy go. This is a period when you can benefit from looking objectively at your life. What needs to change, what should you hang on to? Saturn and Uranus offer solutions if you can meet the challenge around the 11th.

Aries

If a partner or spouse has been having a few financial constraints, this is a month where things can improve. You may also receive benefits of some sort, through sources other rather than your regular employment. Even though the month opens with the Moon in your birth sign, and you want to be primed for action, you need to be patient a little longer. The last week of November will allow you to plan long term.

Taurus

Is it just a friendship, or is it becoming something a little more committed? That is the question you could be asking yourself during the opening days of November. With a lot of emphasis on your opposing sign, all sorts of relationship issues seem to be on your mind. The time is ripe for partnerships of both a personal and business nature, so get busy! The 12th and 13th look like key dates for meetings and social activities, especially if you have romance in mind.

Gemini

Agreements, and disagreements, contracts and commitments all figure large in your month ahead. While you love your freedom and plenty of change and variety in your life, the coming period will need you to accept new responsibilities if you are to invest in long term happiness. Opportunities have opened up on the work front so don’t let them slip by, they may not be there forever. Splurge a little on clothes and personal grooming if you can manage it. It will be money well spent.

Cancer

Your creativity is at a peak this month, so whether you are involved in art, drama, and kids’ activities, or planning to expand your family, the stars are giving you support. Your mood should be upbeat and infectious, making you great company. Work issues can be a little draining, it seems that you need to work on a system where you can handle that and your domestic life as well. If not, your health could suffer.

Leo

If you feel like a change of pace from the hectic summer lifestyle, you should think in terms of home comforts. That even goes as far as getting busy in the kitchen and inviting friends for a gourmet dinner. It will bring your circle closer and allow you to extend your renowned hospitality. The 12th and 13th are lovely days with positive energy flowing freely. Exercise caution around the 19th though, it isn’t the best of days for anyone.

Virgo

The excellent aspects supporting communication, meetings and short distance travel continue this month. On the down side, you may face issues regarding your home and domestic life, as well as a blow to your finances around the 19th.  If you can navigate this successfully the picture should improve by the 21st. If you need to have a face-to-face meeting to ask a favor, pick the 12th or 13th. You are more likely to get a positive result.

Sagittarius

The build up to your birthday often comes with a simmering sense of anticipation. This month has an important aspect between Saturn and Uranus that will impact those born in the last week of Sagittarius. These slow-moving planets are in trine position for around a year, so the overall mood is that of a desire for change, but with a need to cling onto the status quo as some sort of security blanket. Don’t feel too comfortable though, that change will come. Avoid taking decisions around the 14th, facts may not be clear and you may feel confused.

Capricorn

Generally speaking, you are getting plenty of planetary support this month. The first week should open up possibilities with a Taurus moon in your 5th house of kids, hobbies, art and romance. The 11th may highlight thoughts you had regarding changes around the home front. Even if it isn’t immediate, the seeds have been sown and sooner or later you will take action. Friendships could become more romantic; you could find casual get-togethers a great place to meet someone if you are single. Lay low on the 19th; it’s a day full of challenges.

Aquarius

If you have been putting in a good effort at work and been a helpful member of your community, this is the month your reputation should be glowing. Even if it doesn’t reach your ears, you have an admiring audience. Around the 11th, you may find that your ideas are finding acceptance, it seems that your ability to see the direction things should go in makes sense to more people. Financial issues should become a lot clearer after the 22nd, but maybe you prefer not see the reality?

Pisces

This is your kind of month. People finally seem to understand what makes you tick. There could be opportunities for a spot of travel, or at least some gatherings with people from diverse cultures where you can expand your knowledge and meet people whose company you enjoy. Messages may be a bit mixed around the 14th, but by the 16th you should have news that makes your heart beat a little faster, for all the right reasons. By the 21st romantic prospects look really interesting.
