The Tools for Building a Healthy Relationship

To learn about the tools for building healthy relationships, we caught up with marriage and family therapist, Yasmin Magdy. Here is her advice on how to create and maintain healthy, rewarding and emotionally supportive unions.

The Important Elements for Successful Relationships

The most important elements that sustain a healthy and a successful romantic relationship are respect, loyalty, love and compassion. Partners have to show respect to each other before they show love. A main pillar in any healthy relationship is showing respect for one another. A relationship that is free of put-downs and in which the partners feel accepted the way they are and secure, is one in which love will flourish and be nourished consistently. Communicating how you feel through actions of love rather than simply just saying, “I love you” is another very important way to a successful relationship that is built on security, and then love.

5 Ways to Speak and Understand Love

There are five ways to speak and understand emotional love, but many couples are not aware of them.

  1. Words of affirmation
  2. Quality time
  3. Receiving gifts
  4. Acts of service
  5. Physical touch

We all grow up in different environments in which we adopt our sense of love expression from our parents. Some grow up expressing their love by using physical touch and words of affirmation while others may see that expressing love happens through driving you somewhere or getting an errand done for you to save you the hassle. Regardless of the way your partner is expressing their love, you might still feel emotionally distant or not loved enough. Why? You expect love in your way, which in return causes an emotional and physical disconnection between you.

Think about it now. We need to be calm and have an in-depth discussion about the way we both like to express and receive love. Being loved in the way you understand and appreciate is so important for a relationship.

Why Do Relationships Fail?

We must acknowledge that conflict in relationships to some extent is both normal and integral for deeper communication and bonding to take place. Yet, sometimes couples do not come out of a conflict with a deeper bond, but rather are broken and drift further apart, which leads to the relationship failing.

Unfortunately, emotional abuse, verbal abuse and physical abuse exist in many relationships. Disrespect and infidelity are other main reasons that set the stage for destroying the bond a couple has. They affect the sense of security and closeness the partners have and contribute to anger, resentment and holding grudges against each other.

Escalating Negativity: Criticism, Defensiveness, Contempt, Stonewalling. Gottman calls these the “Four Horseman of the Apocalypse”. Gender differences include female criticism and male stonewalling. Exchange of reciprocal anger is found in both stable, happy marriages and unstable, unhappy marriages. The escalating negativity that leads to “turning away” from bids for emotional connection is the factor that leads to failed relationships.

Withdrawal and Emotional Disengagement. Here we are talking about the lack of the following: affection, humor, interest, support, engagement and empathy.

And finally Failed Repair Attempts. This entails unsuccessful attempts at repairing damage that has occurred in the relationship due to holding grudges and being resentful towards your partner.

What Happens When the “Honeymoon” Period Ends

There are some main pitfalls for newlyweds during the first months of marriage. Let’s face it, after the honeymoon ends reality sets in and we start facing each other’s real selves. A main pitfall here is in our expectations, which sets the stage for disappointment. We tend to find ourselves frustrated and disappointed if our partner does not turn out as expected by us. Many partners then fall into the biggest pitfall in a relationship, which is attempting to change who their partner is and thus start showing disappointment and frustration when they do not see the desired changes in their partners that coincide with their desired picture of them.

Accept each other and do not try to change your partner. We all are aware that conflicts start to happen early on in the relationship because simply put, both partners are still learning about each other in deeper ways. While this is happening, it is vital that communication includes respect and no put-downs.

Avoiding Toxic or Negative Interaction

This is a very common pitfall that many couples fall into once anger and resentment or put-downs seep into their conversations and conflicts. One of the main methods we teach couples in marital and couple’s therapy is to develop a code or decide on an understanding that once one of them becomes hurtful or loses their temper and is unable to communicate feelings accurately without being hurtful or disrespectful, taking some time apart is vital. This should never be done as a punishment for the other party, but should be done after consensus by both partners to cool off the anger. The discussion should be continued later when both are more relaxed and have a clearer perspective. Remember, communication is key.

The Importance of Intimacy

Intimacy, both emotional first, and physical second, is key in any relationship. It signifies the presence of a strong bond and nourishes partners’ feelings in the relationship. Effort must always be invested in connecting more deeply, whether emotionally or physically, for a happier and healthier relationship. Settling for a relationship in which you are physically or emotionally frustrated, neglected or unsatisfied contributes to the development of negative feelings and causes a drift between partners. Spice up your love life constantly, both physically and emotionally.

Being flexible in a relationship is key to a healthy life. Remember that you both come from different backgrounds and expecting life to happen based on your own point of view and background only is never fair to your partner since he/she comes from a different world than yours. Thus, the key to adapting and making allowances in a relationship is built on flexibility first and healthy communication second.

The Importance of “Me Time”

“Me time” is key to any relationship. Having a separate world of your own for each partner is essential to keeping a healthy relationship. Just as it is important to share hobbies and activities together, it is essential that each partner maintains a separate time with friends, have his/her own hobbies and interests. We highly recommend “me time” in therapy for couples to decrease the level of co-dependency in many cases, as well as to sustain the concept of “who am I” outside of the relationship. Many couples seem to be engulfed by their roles as a husband, wife, mother and a father in which the duties take them far from who he or she was before becoming part of a couple.

Forgiving & Forgetting: Is It Possible?

Forgiving and forgetting often go hand in hand in relationships, but there isn’t a typical time frame for forgiving, nor forgetting. An individual who has chosen to forgive most likely has accepted the reality of the situation and decided that his or her significant other was worth more than the pain of a fallout. Forgetting, on the other hand, doesn’t mean to disregard a behavior, response, or attitude that caused a problem in the beginning, it means that the individual will work past the complications and most importantly, never hold it against his or her partner in the future. Addressing things head on eliminates further complications by evening out the conversation and making sure that both partners’ priorities are addressed, rather than moping around giving the silent treatment and angry stares.

Feeling Stuck? It’s Time for Help!

When you find yourself stuck, and hit a road bump in the relationship that you cannot get past on your own, it is always recommended to seek therapy. At this point you need an outside perspective as well as learning some tools of communication.

5 Different Fitness Activities for Couples in Cairo

If you’re looking for ways to connect and have fun with your partner while burning the calories, Cairo offers a number of both indoor and outdoor activities. Here are some options to explore if you fancy spending some time together in an unconventional way.

KAYAKING

Bask in the sun, enjoy scenic views of the Nile and nature, and make special memories with your partner. You can go solo or ride in a double kayak, just make sure you waterproof your camera or phone due to the splash factor! Kayaking is a great low impact full body workout if you set a less leisurely pace.

CYCLING

You may not think cycling can be an enjoyable activity in a city like Cairo, but some suburbs offer a pleasurable experience. The Cairo Cycling Club organizes bike rides in Katameya every weekend for early risers, and special events are organized throughout the year visiting different locales and places around Egypt with lovely scenery. Egypt is also launching a new bike lane along the Cairo/Sokhna highway in an effort to encourage cycling as a sport in Egypt!

RUNNING

Picking up a long-term sport and goal together will be challenge, and some couples love the motivation. So why not build up to a marathon? Cairo Runners organizes bi-weekly runs that build up stamina and endurance to their final half marathon 17k run along the Nile. They also host a variety of camps all around Egypt each season visiting places like Ismailia, Alexandria, Dahab, Luxor and more.

DANCING

A little romance, a little intimacy, and a lot of shimmying! There are several options for learning a move or two here in Cairo, and it has the potential to recreate the connection of those early days of your love. Whether it’s Ballroom, Tango, Samba or Salsa; the music and mood will do the job.

HORSEBACK RIDING

Animal lovers will enjoy this, and there are countless stables in the Maryotia area to enjoy a more secluded outing rather than the tourist traps located in the Pyramids area. Enjoy an outing in the desert and see the city from atop sand dunes, or take a more low-key stroll through the Egyptian countryside and see a side of your hometown you may not be familiar with. Invest in some classes and learn how to trot correctly, this will give you the leg and back muscle training for full fitness benefits.

What is Broken Heart Syndrome?

What is Broken Heart Syndrome?

When you think of a broken heart, you may picture a drawing of a heart with a jagged line running through it, in reality, broken heart syndrome does exist, with studies continuously finding connections between depression, mental health and heart disease.

Broken heart syndrome, also called stress-induced cardiomyopathy or takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a temporary heart condition that’s often brought on by an emotionally stressful event, such as the death of a loved one, a break-up, betrayal, hearing bad news or even after a good shock (like winning the lottery)!

When and What Happens

The condition can strike even if you are healthy, but could also be triggered by a serious physical illness or surgery. In rare cases, some drugs such as epinephrine and levothyroxine can cause broken heart syndrome by inducing a surge in stress hormones, which affects the heart, with women being more susceptible to this effect than men.

People with broken heart syndrome often have shortness of breath and sudden chest pain that could be misdiagnosed as a heart attack. These symptoms can begin just a few minutes to hours after exposure to the unexpected stress.

How BHS Differs from a Heart Attack

Unlike heart attacks, most people who experience broken heart syndrome have fairly normal coronary arteries (blood vessels that supply the heart with blood), only their heart cells are “stunned” by stress hormones but not killed. The “stunning” effects reverse quickly, often within just a few days or weeks. In most cases, there is no lasting damage to the heart, unlike with heart attacks.

Because symptoms are similar to a heart attack, it is important to seek help right away. You, and sometimes emergency-care providers, may not be able to recognize that you have broken heart syndrome until you undergo some tests. All kinds of chest pain should be checked by a doctor.

How BHS is Diagnosed & Treatment

Tests and procedures used for diagnosis include ECG (electrocardiogram), blood tests, echocardiography, chest X-ray & cardiac MRI.

There is no standard treatment for broken heart syndrome, initial treatment is aimed at improving blood flow to the heart, and may be similar to the treatment of a heart attack until the diagnosis is clear. Most people stay in the hospital while they recover. Further treatment can include medicines that relieve fluid buildup, treat blood pressure problems, prevent blood clots, and manage stress hormones. Medicines are often discontinued once heart function has returned to normal. Many patients make a full recovery within a month or so.

Procedures that are often used to treat a heart attack, such as balloon angioplasty and stent placement, or even surgery, aren’t helpful in treating broken heart syndrome. These procedures treat blocked arteries, which are not the cause of broken heart syndrome

Changing Your Lifestyle & Prevention

Lifestyle change is also advised, it’s important to find ways to reduce stress and cope with particularly upsetting situations. Learning how to manage stress can improve your emotional and physical health.

Having supportive people in your life with whom you can share your feelings or concerns can help relieve stress. Physical activity, meditation and relaxation therapy also can help relieve stress.

Beit Mariam: Embracing Your Spirituality

Cairo offers dozens of yoga classes and teachers, finding the right place and teacher to suit your needs is a matter of personal taste. When we met Mariam Sobhy and visited her intimate center, Beit Mariam, we could sense the difference. Cozy and personal, Beit Mariam makes a person feel at home and connected to a sense of purpose. Cairo West Magazine wanted to learn more about what sets it apart from the rest.

Beginnings of a New Life

After spending her adult working life in the corporate world of banking and telecommunications, Sobhy felt the push to do something more fulfilling. Wanting to spend more time with her son and feeling the need to ignite her passion for life, she attended an Ashtanga yoga class on a lark with her friend. A former ballerina, she thought practice would be a piece of cake. Sobhy was intimidated by the difficulty of the class and the physical challenge, prompting her to attend different classes, determined to learn. Additionally, she dedicated time to self-study and home practice and began reading widely into the philosophy and spirituality behind yoga. After receiving her teaching training in Thailand, and later on completing a degree in the philosophy and history of yoga at the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies, she decided to leave corporate life behind and dedicate herself to sharing her knowledge of yoga with others.

How Beit Mariam is Different

Beit Mariam is founded on the idea that teaching yoga shouldn’t be a business, it should be about helping people to grow spirituality and overcome struggles in life. It is an open space for anyone wanting to work on his or her spiritual journey. Classes on offer vary from different types of yoga, meditation, life coaching, Reiki practitioner courses, sound healing, and more. Different practitioners offer classes on a rotating basis, and come from all walks of life. Some offer their sessions for free, such as Sufi Meditation led by Rania Bedeir once a week. Although there are fixed prices for classes, money transactions are not a primary focus; a black box sits by the door for those who can afford it. If not, visitors can pay as little or as much as they would like.

Faith and Flexibility

“Through my practice, I have reached a place where deep down in my heart, I am going to do the best I can and offer whatever I have with the real intention inside my heart … and the fruit of the action or the journey will come,” says Sobhy. This faith and flexibility is what makes Beit Mariam unique. When the focus on buying group classes, or dealing with price hikes and rigid timetables is lifted, the person can really focus on getting the maximum benefit out of their yoga practice and improving their lifestyle and mindset. For example, after attending an introductory practice session, there is an opportunity for visitors to drop in and practice their Ashtanga yoga under Sobhy’s supervision and guidance for as little or as long as they like from 7 am to 11 am 5 days a week. This allows freedom from adhering to a rigid timetable and the ability to develop their practice at their own pace.

In addition to strengthening the body through physically demanding methods of yoga like Ashtanga, there is balance available through practice like Yin yoga. A lot calmer and slower, Yin yoga poses are held for 5 to 8 minutes, this type of yoga works on the deep connective tissues not the muscles.

What becomes apparent is that Beit Mariam works to shift the focus away from only physical achievements in yoga practice, and draws far more attention to working on the inside rather than perfecting poses and growing leaner. “A lot of people come to yoga class to look a certain way, but as much as the physical side of yoga is an important aspect, it’s only 10% of the story,” says Sobhy.

Crave’s New Yorker Cheesecake

Plain, coated in sauce or blended with nuts – this soft and creamy dessert remains one of the most favored on any menu. Whether it’s the creaminess of the cream cheese, crumble of the crust or a combo of both, it definitely has won many hearts over.

With America taking over this delicacy and bringing the New York version to the front, this delicious dessert has interesting facts to share about its origin.

Cheesecakes Around the World

Each region of the world has added its own touch to the cheesecake.

  • Italians use ricotta in the cream cheese mix.
  • Germans use a very sour type of cheese that tastes very much like yogurt.
  • The French use Neufchatel cheese (one of the oldest in France).
  • In Belgium, the crust is made using a chocolate-based Dutch-Belgian biscuit.
  • Matcha Green Tea is folded in with the cheese in Japan.

 Cold vs. Hot

You can prepare cheesecake either by baking or refrigerating – they’re both as delicious and as creamy. The difference is the hot version requires incorporating eggs into the cream cheese mixture and baking the crust. The cold version requires you to freeze the crust for 10 minutes and then chill the cream cheese filling for about 3-4 hours.

Classic New Yorker Cheesecake Recipe

The Crust:

5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus room-temperature butter for pan

12 Digestive biscuits/Graham crackers – crushed

1/4 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon coarse salt

The Filling:

2-3 packs (Philadelphia or Kiri)

1 1/2 cups sugar

1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest, plus 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon salt

4 large eggs

1 cup sour cream

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 190 °C (moderate) and butter a round oven-baking pan while you make the crust.
  2. Mix biscuits, melted butter, sugar, and salt. Press mixture into pan and bake until it’s set (12 to 15 minutes); let it cool down.
  3. Beat cream cheese with sugar, until fluffy. Add lemon zest and juice, and salt. Beat in eggs, one at a time, scraping down side of bowl after each addition, and then add the sour cream at the end.
  4. Boil some water in a kettle and wrap the bottom half of pan in foil. Pour in filling; place pan in a roasting pan. Pour in boiling water to come halfway up side of pan.
  5. Bake until just set in center, about 1 3/4 hours. Remove pan from water; let cool 20 minutes.
  6. Run a knife around edge; let cool completely.
  7. Cover; chill overnight before serving. Add topping before servings; like caramel, blueberry, raspberry or chocolate sauce.

5 Steps to the Perfect Burger

The burger scene has EXPLODED in Cairo, with endless options for the yummy night out. But what about those days when you feel like whipping up the perfect burger at home? Butcher’s Burger has divulged the 5 steps to the perfect meaty treat.

Step 1: The Beef

It all starts with the selection of beef cuts. You need juiciness, texture, and of course, flavor.

DO NOT use prepared minced beef, ask your butcher to prepare and grind your beef cuts.

A 50% sirloin, 50% chuck would be an excellent ratio for a succulent and tasty beef burger.

Ask the butcher not to trim the natural fats of the selected cuts; an average of 20% fat content is needed for a juicy burger. Don’t over-grind it, you need to maintain a nice texture and bite.

Step 2: Shaping the Perfect Patty

Divide your beef into 150 gm portions; shape each portion into a ball. DO NOT over work the beef, it needs minimum handling, otherwise it will become dense and chewy. Using the tip of your fingers shape the balls into round patties, about 2 cm thick, and DO NOT over press it. Arrange your burgers on a flat plate, cover with cling film, and let it rest for at least 30 minutes in the fridge.

Step 3: Seasoning the Patty

Since the quality of your beef is very good, you do not need to over-season the patties. Just sprinkle with some salt and pepper.

Step 4: Cooking the Burger

Use a non-stick pan or preferably an iron skillet, add a little olive oil and wait till the oil starts to be smoking hot. You need the pan to be hot to sear the burger surface, and maintain the burger juices inside the patty.

Add the burgers, one at a time, and DO NOT over-crowd your pan, you need to leave a 2-3 cm space between each patty. Then just leave it alone, burgers should be flipped only once on each side. When the burgers are cooked through (depending on how you like them cooked), arrange on a pre-warmed plate, cover with foil, and let them rest for at least 2 minutes.

Step 5: Assemble to Perfection

Here is where you add your own creativity and taste. First you need to select good fresh burger buns, from your favorite bakery. We recommend that you brush each side of the bun with butter, and toast it in a pan until golden brown.

Now create your own burger according to your taste. The most common ingredients include sauces, add-ons and fresh vegetables.

Sauce: Mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, or chili sauce

Add-ons: Cheese, mushrooms, fried egg, or beef bacon

Fresh vegetables: Tomatoes, lettuce, onions, or arugula

Serve with fries and enjoy!

Ocea in Korba

If you are searching for a truly wonderful seafood experience, the newly opened Ocea in Korba offers just that. Considered on of the best seafood restaurants in Cairo and in Heliopolis.

Type of Cuisine & Signature Dishes

Seafood mania! Appetizers, salads, soups, paella, risotto, pasta, seafood dishes and a couple of non-seafood options. Signature dishes include the Salted Crust Sea bass and Crabs with Ouzo.

Dishes Sampled

The minute you walk into Ocea you know you are about to witness a real seafood experience. Its freshly stocked, daily picks from the Mediterranean and Red Sea are neatly arranged in the ice case. The variety of fish and shellfish depends on seasonality and availability. On that afternoon, the catches of the day were mussels, clams, Red and Grey Mullet, Silverside, squid, crab, Sea Bass, Sole, salmon, Denise and shrimp.

We started off our meal with a Frittura Platter – a dish of various seafood options, dipped in batter and deep-fried to a crunchy golden crispiness. Our platter consisted of deep-fried Silversides (besaria), mussels, calamari and Barbouni served with a special house tartar sauce and sprinkled with capers. The Barbouni was so fresh that you could almost taste the sea, and the tartar sauce balanced the fish taste. We enjoyed our bites with a fruity, aromatic glass of sangria. For main dishes we opted for two different types of fish: Denise and Bouri, cooked in one of Ocea’s signature ways. Our Denise was simply grilled with lemon and garlic – straight forward – preserving the fish’s natural texture and taste, and served with a creamy risotto. The Bouri was seasoned with rada (baladi bread crumbs) and served with traditional Egyptian fish rice. On the side, tehina and baba ghanoug salads – and crispy baladi bread seasoned with spicy paprika. The secret recipe of baba ghanoug makes it the most unique and delicious eggplant salad we have tasted.

Ocea has upped the regular seafood experience a few notches, serving traditional seafood cuisine with a twist.

Other Options that Appealed & Beverages

Ceviche, Poke Bowls and the Salt Crusted Sea Bass. Beverage options include a fully equipped bar.

The Décor & Clientele Mix

The restaurant is situated on the patio of the 1920’s Boutique Hotel. The interior is impressively well done. Ocea is divided into three separate seating areas – a restaurant on the ground floor, a bar on the mezzanine and a roof-top. Light gray walls, dark wood tables, velvet chairs and high ceilings with black light fixtures give it a sophisticated vibe. A very impressive 3D wooden-sticks panel plays with your imagination. The bar is secluded and intimate. The roof top consists of high tables and chairs and also hosts a bar counter. Perfect for a sunset chill out or a breezy summer evening dinner. Guests include seafood lovers, Heliopolis and New Cairo crowd, 30s and up.
