The Beat Goes on at Cairo Jazz Club 610

It was long overdue. Residents of the west side of town had been impatiently waiting for the long-promised launch of Cairo Jazz Club’s sister venue at Guezira Plaza. Now, only days into the soft opening period, reservations are already a must.

Type of Cuisine & Signature Dishes

As aficionados of CJC know, the food vies for attention with the great menu of bands and DJ’s playing throughout the month. That notwithstanding, customers can enjoy a concise but excellent selection of finger food, pizza, pasta, soups, salads, dips, burgers and international dishes.

Some signature dishes include various types of pizza: Margarita, Mushroom with Arugula, Pepperoni, Romana, Seafood, Napoli and Quattro Formaggi; Jazzy Burger, Jazzy Salad, Mixed Cheese Platter, Chicken Quesadillas. Vegetarians and vegans are catered for as well.

Dishes Sampled

Nursing our pre-dinner drinks, we made ourselves comfortable while waiting for our finger food and salad to arrive. Minutes later we were digging into succulent glazed Lollipop Fried Chicken Wings with a Honey BBQ dip and triangles of French Brie, which came crumbed, deep-fried and accompanied by homemade fig jam, and a colorful Apple Chicken Salad. The salad, with sweet corn, dainty cubes of cheddar cheese, sliced apple and chunks of grilled chicken breast, was dressed with a creamy orange dressing and provided a refreshing contrast to the hot items. We also tried the Spring Rolls, a quirky take on the classic. Check the recipe below to see the secret ingredient.

A good test of any place worth its salt is how it can turn out a basic burger. Cairo Jazz Club 610 delivered a top-notch Jazzy Burger. With an expertly cooked beef patty, caramelized onions, melted cheddar cheese, lettuce and fresh tomato served in a home-baked bun, along with a generous serve of chunky fries and Shack sauce, it was just what we needed. The burger is huge, so if you have already delved into the starters you may consider sharing, it’s up to you!

Other Menu Items that Appealed & Beverage Options

The dips look intriguing, and we hear the Caprese Salad is already a hot seller. We would like to try the Stuffed Chicken Roll on our next visit as well.

There is a full bar, including local wines, with a good range of shots and cocktails; with plenty of juices, and non-alcoholic options for those who prefer.

Music Scene

Mondays and Wednesdays will feature live bands, with some of Egypt’s best being featured, along with guest bands from overseas a couple of times a month. Tuesday’s after-work mood will see a Buddha Bar atmosphere, with tracks spun by a DJ from 5 pm onwards. Thursdays offer electronic and house-music, compiled and presented by both local DJs and visiting DJs from abroad at least once a month. To see the details for each month, just check the website.

Décor & Ambience

The interior space draws strongly on the original CJC in Agouza, while the spacious, relaxing outdoor terrace is rather Zen, with plenty of greenery. The terrace offers space heaters in winter, and will be a wonderful place to hang out when summer rolls around.

The ambience is very laid back and chilled in the early part of the evening, but by the time we left the band of the evening, Egyptian Project, was setting up and vibe was certainly upbeat.

Clientele Mix

It’s more about The Riff Band than riff-raff. The couples-only, 25 upwards policy is politely enforced by the muscle-bound ‘meet-and-greet’ team on the door. We have been assured, however, that ladies wishing to have a ‘girls night out’ are more than welcome. At least 50% of the customers are now regulars.

Top Tip: Happy Hour!

Cairo Jazz Club 610 offers a Happy Hour each day from 5 pm to 9 pm. Order a main dish or Jazzy Burger and get a glass of Omar Khayam free, or order a beer and get the second one free.

Price range: Moderate

A Fresh Start with Banati Foundation

In Cairo there are often members of the community who slip through the cracks, and inevitably they seem to be the most vulnerable. That is where Banati Foundation has stepped in. Situated in charming surroundings off the Wahat Road in Giza, Banati helps children who have been battling life on the streets, children whose parents are in prison and generally speaking, those who have been deprived of parental care.

Established in 2010, Banati focuses on children at risk and works through four main pillars:

  1. The first pillar is the mobile unit that drives around Cairo and offers social services to girls who live on the street.
  2. The second pillar is the Reception Center. It is a daily center, where girls and young mothers can come to spend the day. It is a phase between the street and the shelters. Within the Reception Center there are various services offered to the girls. These include legal services, which are important for providing help in processing documents such as ID cards, birth certificates and even marriage certificates. Support is provided as well through the available psychologists and social workers. There are also educational services offered to the girls as well as productive workshops such as sewing.

Most importantly, the center is a place where the girls can have a rest from what they go through on the street. It allows them to sleep and relax in a safe environment without fear of physical or sexual abuse. As soon as they arrive at the center, they take a shower and change their clothes, so their own clothes can be washed. This provides essential basic hygiene that they may not otherwise have access to.

  1. The third pillar is the Temporary Shelter, which forms a stepping-stone between the Reception Center and a Permanent Shelter. With a maximum capacity of 12, it serves the girls who are at a very high risk. Some girls have been trying to survive on the streets for a very long time; others may be in need of intense and direct services or preparation to go the Permanent Shelters. Usually if a girl decides to leave, she will drag four or five other girls with her, so in order to protect the more vulnerable girls who are not very stable there is this temporary shelter.
  2. The fourth pillar is the Permanent Shelter. Currently housing 227 children, of whom 37 are boys, although there is a capacity for 250. Most of the boys who live at Banati are direct relatives of the girls, usually a brother or a cousin, so a family can stay intact.

The Permanent Shelter also has different departments. There is a legal department and an education department with a Montessori nursery and a parity system to the school system where children can find educational support if they are lagging behind at school. Most of the children are enrolled in public schools, or community or experimental schools. The social-psycho unit is staffed with psychologists and consulting psychiatrists and offers educational, rehabilitative and productive workshops.

There are currently 12 different workshops where the girls can acquire useful skills: pottery, art, crafts, cookery, story-telling, sports, yoga, gardening, music, jewelry making, sewing and crochet.

In essence, the overall objective of Banati Foundation is to re-integrate the children back into society, and ideally, back into their families. Banati conducts meetings with the families, and they are encouraged to come and visit the girls at the shelter so the team can carry out social work with them. It can be hard to work with the families; most of the children who come to the shelter have been through a lot of abuse, whether physical or sexual, or have experienced a lot of neglect. In many cases they can be a second generation of street girls.

Banati Success Stories

One of the many success stories is that of a girl who was committed to bettering herself. She attended school and also started attending the cookery workshop. She had incredible drive and really wanted to succeed in life. Banati contacted Novotel who were offering more intensive culinary training, although they were not looking to hire anyone at that point.

However, the girl attended the course and really impressed them. Some six months later Novotel contacted Banati and said they would like to hire her. Now she holds the position of Assistant Chef with Novotel and Banati feels justifiably proud of her success.

Another success story involves a girl who was re-homed to Banati. At Banati she started reading about children’s psychology, and at the age of around 21 started training as an Assistant Supervisor.  She now holds that position and is working both on her diploma and a certificate covering child supervisory related topics. It is hoped that she will go on to become a certified supervisor, for which there is a great need in Egypt and at Banati. She could then go on to work in a similar centre to gain outside exposure before maybe returning to Banati to contribute to the foundation that set her on a path to her new life.

What people seldom understand is the amount of courage these young girls display, and the effort the girls make to overcome their disadvantaged beginning to become part of the greater community.

How can you contribute or help?

As a big institution, Banati always welcomes financial donations to support the work being carried out. These can be general donations, or directed towards a specific department or activity. It is also possible to sponsor a specific child. The community can contribute by volunteering. All candidates are welcomed, but Banati would particularly benefit through help from people or organizations willing to work long-term by offering assistance with social media, website development, and database management. Banati would also benefit from security and building maintenance. Any and all help is appreciated to support this vital organization.

Tawlet Beirut in Twin Towers – Closed

Just when we thought the new-found dining scene in Sheikh Zayed couldn’t up its game any further, along came great Lebanese food in Sheikh Zayed: Tawlet Beirut in Rivulet, Twin Towers. Only two weeks into its soft launch at the time we visited, tables were rapidly filling up as early as 7 pm. It didn’t take long for us to discover why…

Type of cuisine & Signature Dishes

Top-notch home-style Lebanese dishes delivered with passion and finesse. Signature dishes include the Moutabbal Tawletna, Quinoa Tabbouleh, Manakish with Zaatar and Lebneh.

Dishes Sampled

Honoring the the best traditions, our meal started with warm, freshly baked Lebanese bread, with an accompaniment of tiny green olives, zaatar with olive oil, and creamy labneh with garlic. Dare we admit that we even asked for a second basket of bread to delve into the rich, walnut and pomegranate molasses, and peppery mhamara that followed.

Following up with plates of manakish with zaatar and labneh; a heavenly Moutabbal Tawletna, with chargrilled eggplant, tehina, fresh pomegranate and herbs; Quinoa Tabbouleh, Batata Kezbara, the table fell strangely silent as we immersed ourselves in the serious task of capturing every flavor. Dainty rolls of piping hot pastry stuffed with creamy cheese, sambousek and fragrant kebbeh; all of these went down in a flash.

Next came the Mixed Grill. Succulent chicken, grilled kebab and kofta, served with fluffy white rice and crisp fries, char-grilled peppers and fresh slivers of seasoned onion, it lived up to our high expectations. We sipped on pleasant combos of peach and pineapple with a dash of ginger, before tackling the straight-from-the-oven Konafa. When we cut through the golden casing the sight of soft, gooey, creamy cheese was enough to perk up our taste buds yet again. Soaked with a good dowsing of rosewater syrup and a generous sprinkling of pistachios, it was the ultimate high of a meal to remember. It would have been easy to linger and enjoy the lively buzz of conversation against the relaxing strains of background music, but it wouldn’t have been fair to the growing number of eager diners arriving in the hope of finding a table at this hot, new addition to Cairo’s culinary scene.

Other Menu Items that Appealed & Beverage Options

We have no doubt that everything would be just as good as the dishes we had already tried. The desserts include many traditional Lebanese favorites, along with a Sweet Potato and Marshmallow delight.

Beverage options include juices, non-alcoholic cocktails, traditional beverages, frappé, coffee and tea, along with soft drinks. Shisha is available in a range of flavors.

Tawlet Beirut

Décor & Ambience

Contemporary and comfortable, with a tasteful modern take on Oriental design reflected in the seating upholstery. Green tones echo against subtle gold and warmer russet with the addition of blown glass arranged as a wall display. Seating is both indoor and outdoor and there are screens discreetly situated throughout, so customers can chill after a great meal and catch the match or favorite series over a shisha.

Ambience is relaxed, refined, and welcoming. The staff is discreet and professional without being overly formal.

Clientele Mix & Price Range

Over 25s who are accustomed to quality and know where to hunt it down. Anyone who takes their food seriously.

Price range is moderate, but we recommend you push the boat out and try a wide range of dishes for a great experience.

HanaDays Kitchen in Darb1718 – Temporarily Closed

HanaDays Kitchen

Visit this outdoor eatery for a unique dining experience surrounded by Cairo’s artisans and potters. HanaDays is the brainchild of Hanadi Al-Khanji and Waleed Ads, serving home-cooked goodness fuelled by love. Relying heavily on Al-Khanji’s Palestinian-Jordanian roots, the menu also boasts global dishes with a twist. We visited on a Thursday evening and enjoyed a traditional Levantine meal.

Signature Dishes

Fettat Jagh, Penne Rose with Shrimps, Maklouba. HanaDays has a rotating menu of daily main dishes, salads, and soups, while a fixed menu of appetizers and sandwiches is available every day.

Dishes Sampled

Upon arrival, we were led by a friendly waiter to the rustic table adorned with flowers and attractive pottery serving ware from Darb’s talented artists. We enjoyed fresh Hibiscus juice while waiting for our creamy zucchini and potato soup, perfect to warm a chilly evening. After wiping the bowls clean, we were offered a large serving of tabouleh salad with quinoa. The tabouleh was very tangy, just the way we like it, and got our taste buds prepared for the next amazing dish: Kofta Wrapped in Vine Leaves. We have never heard of this type of appetizer, but it was divine. Round portions of high-quality beef wrapped in vine leaf and topped with a slice of potato and tomato and drizzled in a tangy dressing. The dish came served with a portion of rice to cut down on the tang a bit for those who needed to, but we could have easily gobbled down at least 3 more.

Next came a portion of Jordanian Bruschetta comprised of Italian bread slices topped with feta cheese, olive oil, zaatar, and chopped tomato. Our main dish was a traditional Palestinian meal of Masakhan; marinated chicken breast and thigh in bay leaf, pure olive oil, onion and sumac served on tabon (traditional Palestinian flat bread).  The oven-baked chicken was tender and flavorful and the portion was big enough for two.

Other Menu Items that Appealed & Beverage Options

Each day brings a new daily menu, but the fixed appetizers menu looks amazing and could be a meal in itself. Chicken Livers in Pomegranate Dressing, Spring Rolls, Hummos, Sambosak, Alayet Bandora.

Fresh juices, soft drinks, and hot beverages are on offer.

Décor & Ambience

The dining area is an L-shaped outdoor patio space under colorful domes and fenced in by hedges. HanaDays has a perfect vantage point for peeking into the surrounding workshops of Darb1718, and the simple and quirky furnishings give the sense of being in another era. Refurbished antique sewing stands serve as tables with rickety Shisha café-style chairs and all the serving ware is pottery from the workshops of Darb. The large kitchen is encased in windows, so you can get a peek at the action happening inside.

The ambience is very peaceful and laid-back with ambient music playing on a speaker. Perfect for a weekend lunch or chill dinner with friends.

Clientele Mix & Price Range

A younger crowd who work in the area pop in for a quick bite, young couples enjoy a date while checking out what is on offer in Darb, and a whole host of different clientele drives in from all over town… it’s worth it!
The price range is inexpensive considering the quality.

Top Tips!

Brunch is offered on Fridays and Saturdays from 12 pm to 5 pm. Private dinners can be hosted for 20 to 25 persons, and cooking classes may be on the horizon.

Marlyn’s: A Touch of Europe in Heliopolis

#WhereChicHappens is this restaurant mantra and it lives up to it perfectly! The brand new restaurant for fine dining in Heliopolis brings the best of Europe and offers as a spot for a romantic dinner in Cairo. With dishes inspired by France, Italy, Spain, and many more, there is a chic dish on the menu to suit varying tastes. We visited this chic Heliopolis eatery on a weekend to scope out what they have on offer.

Type of Cuisine & Signatures Dishes

Marlyn’s is a European inspired restaurant bringing you joyful picks of the best European cuisine dishes. Signature drinks include Marlyn’s Perfect Poached Eggs, Marlyn’s Garden Pizza, and Marlyn’s Chicken.

Dishes and Drinks Sampled

Upon arrival, we sipped on fresh iced teas and complimentary bread and butter while deciding what to order. The iced teas were fresh and not too sweet, which was perfect for our late afternoon lunch. We were overwhelmed by the extensive menu and decided to start with a soup, salad, and starter to kick off our Marlyn’s European experience. The Traditional French Onion Soup came in a giant bread bowl and was topped with grated cheese. The soup was large enough for three people to share and filled with flavor. The Avocado and Shrimp Salad also came as a sizeable portion and was fresh and zesty with a house-made vinaigrette. The starter was a large cheese platter, à la charcuterie that featured four cheeses and sides of nuts, strawberries, and pesto. Each dish was far larger than we expected, and came beautifully presented. For mains, the manager helped us pick three main courses. Chicken Cordon Rose, Marlyn’s Chicken, and the Angus Beef. They were all delicious, with perfectly paired sides, and layers of flavor, but the signature chicken dish was above and beyond expectations.

For dessert, we opted for fancy drinks, the drink menu almost competes with the food menu at Marlyn’s so it was easy to choose something delicious.  We had two virgin cocktails, a mint-lemonade, and a strawberry mojito. They came in hurricane glasses with fun twisty straws and garnishes. The fresh, fun, fruity drinks were a great way to digest a beautiful meal.

Other Menu Items that Appealed & Beverage Options

Breakfast items like Marlyn’s Perfect Poached Eggs and Parisian Petit Dejeuner are dishes that caught our eye for an earlier morning visit. Many Italian inspired dishes like the Risotto Ai Funghi, Spinach Ravioli, and the Chicken Pesto pizza also appealed.

There are over three pages of beverage options will keep any thirsty guest satisfied. The restaurant serves soft drinks, milkshakes, non-alcoholic cocktails, fresh juices, smoothies, iced teas, and an inclusive range of hot beverages.

Décor & Ambience

The restaurant is a large and bright space decorated with light pastel colors, flowers, and beautiful lights. The venue is two stories, with both indoor and outdoor seating, offering a European chic decor with a fresh and friendly vibe. The ambience is warm and inviting and gives clients a street-café-in-Paris feel.

Clientele Mix & Price Range

Heliopolis locals and those from other Cairo neighbourhoods looking for a filling dining experience.

Price range is very affordable considering the food quality, portion size, and the restaurant’s atmosphere.

Jemezeh in Cairo Tower

What could have been better than a leisurely late lunch on a sunny winter afternoon? Especially when it was in a secluded spot that had not popped up on our radar before. Some new discoveries just have to be shared. We bring you what is considered one of the best Lebanese food restarurant in Cairo, Jemezeh.

Type of cuisine & Signature Dishes

Nestled in a sheltered garden at the foot of the iconic Cairo Tower, Jemezeh offers excellent Lebanese cuisine.

Signature dishes include the Kebba Labanaya, Batata Harra, Chicken Livers with Pomegranate Molasses, Muhammara, Tabbouleh

Dishes Sampled

Lunch kicked off with freshly baked, puffy Lebanese bread, accompanied by covetable little metal containers with olive paste and zaatar with olive oil.

We soon had a table brimming over with fresh, citrusy tabbouleh, chicken livers with pomegranate molasses; fiery batata harra; tiny aromatic makanek sausages bathed in the same delightfully sticky molasses; hot, thin slices of manakish with halloumi and zaatar; Kebba Labanya; perfectly spiced, tender shish taouk, fluffy white rice and a tasty muhammara.  The spicy batata harra had us diving for our lemon juice with mint at first, but we quickly polished it off.

Each dish was cooked well, and presented with total authenticity. The menu itself is long and very comprehensive, so newcomers to Lebanese food should feel free to call on the expert assistance of the helpful waiters. We had no regrets about going with their recommendations. The kebba came in a creamy sauce, just right for scooping up with the fluffy rice. The muhammara was a subtle-but-rich blend of red peppers, ground walnuts, pomegranate molasses and spices and tempted us to go in for a second round.

We couldn’t pass up on something sweet to balance the savoury spiciness of our meal, so we went for the all-time favorites Om Ali and mango konafa with eshta. There was just time for a shisha with mastica before hitting the road, even though we could easily have lingered on a while longer quite happily.

Other Menu Items that Appealed & Beverage Options

We are sure the boneless Chicken Mosaheb would live up to expectations, and would also go for the Charcoal Grilled Kabab.

Beverages are plentiful, from fresh juices, coffee, tea and soft drinks to local beer and wine.

Décor & Ambience

Don’t expect bling, this open-air venue draws on an ever-so-slightly-down-at-heel ambience that gives the feel of having been there for generations. All part of the charm.

The whole feel was of being in an enchanting time warp, with the long-established gentility of Zamalek setting the mood. Weekends and special holidays offer live entertainment with a singer crooning in both English and Arabic.

Clientele Mix & Price Range

Young couples, local residents, families on weekends, and being part of Cairo Tower, a growing number of tourists.

This has to be up there with the best value dining in town. Prices are very reasonable, and the quality of food is excellent.

Top Tip

Take Uber or Careem (or a taxi of course). Parking is scant, but will hopefully be available in the near future.

Crave’s Apple Pie to Celebrate Mother’s Day

We often resort to flowers, special cards, presents, and lunches dedicated to the most precious female figure in our lives on Mother’s Day. This year, we recommend a heartwarming Apple Pie recipe to give back some of the comfort, love and gratitude the mother figure has always given us. Recipe serves 6-8.

INGREDIENTS:

Pastry

150 g flour
2 tablespoons sugar
100 g butter
1 egg
2 tablespoons water

Filling

4-5 apples, peeled and sliced thinly
Zest of ½ lemon
Juice of 1 lemon
2 tablespoons caster sugar
1 tablespoon toasted pine nuts
1 egg, whisked lightly
2 teaspoon extra sugar for sprinkling

METHOD:

  1. Preheat an oven to 180C. Lightly grease a 22 cm pie tin.
  2. Make the pastry. Place flour, sugar and butter in a food processor. Whizz until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the egg and 1 tablespoon water. Whizz to form the dough. If needed add the remaining tablespoon of water.
  3. Roll out ¾ of the dough on a lightly floured cutting board, then line pie tin.
  4. For the filling: place apple, lemon, sugar and pinenuts in a large bowl and toss to combine well.
  5. Layer the apples in the pie shell in a circular shape. Use them all, as they will shrink when they cook. Make a lattice with the remaining pastry and carefully place over the apples. Trim the edges. Brush the top with egg.
  6. Bake for 50 minutes until golden and the apple is softened. Stick a knife in to test. Remove and cool slightly. When cooled, sprinkle the castor sugar over top.
  7. Serve with clotted cream or ice cream.
