8 Ways to Fight Your Way to Fitness with Mohamed Zakaria

Working out at the gym has the tendency to grow stale, but there is no reason to abandon your zest for fitness just because the environment has become dull! We met up with Mohamed Zakaria, the Head of Fighting at Fight and Fitness Factory in Sheikh Zayed, to learn some of the functional training steps that fighters go through to pump up the stamina for boxing, MMA, and kickboxing. You can use any of these hacks to battle the carbs, punch up the power, and beat the gym rut!

WARMING UP

It is essential to warm up your rotator cuff, the group of muscles and tendons surrounding your shoulder joint, before attempting any form of fighting fitness. Use resistance bands or light dumbbells to stretch your arms and shoulder in a range of motions.

SKIPPING ROPES

A great lower body workout; hamstrings, glutes and calves all warm up with this simple and fun exercise. Great for the shoulders and general coordination, too.

SHADOW BOXING

A great cardio move for warming up, grab some dumbbells and get your rotator cuff muscles moving by boxing the air.

BATTLE ROPES

Work out your glutes, hamstrings and quadriceps in isometric contraction by holding yourself into a squat position and lifting the ropes in a wave. This increases your endurance and speed while also giving your shoulders and back a great workout.

PUNCHING BAG

Use your own body weight to increase the power of your punch by hitting the bag, the heaviness of the bag increases your overall strength and gives you a great fat-burning cardio workout. It also increases core muscle strength.

AIR BIKE

This nifty bike is harder than it looks! The resistance works out your shoulders, lats in the back, and your glutes, hamstrings, quadriceps and calves. Great cardio and fat burning, too.

HAMMER SMASH

This increases the range of motion of your waist, and gives great overall body conditioning. Legs, shoulders, lats, triceps, and biceps all work together to execute this move with fat burning results.

SAND BAG

There’s a big difference between hitting on the ground and hitting standing up! Hit a sand bag on the ground to increase your cardio stamina and use all your core muscles to stay steady and not flip over.

KETTLE BALL SWING

The main muscles used here are hamstrings and glutes, while also using your core muscles. This move increases explosive power needed by fighters for kicks and punching, while also increasing the shoulders range of motion. This exercise also bulks up the lower body mass.

How to Suntan Safely this Summer

When it comes to protecting ourselves and children from sunburn, we all agree getting summer skincare right is essential. While it is true that the severity of sun damage depends on the amount of melanin in the skin, olive and brown skinned people are still prone to pigmentation, dark spots and skin cell damage that could lead to cancer. So slather on that sunscreen regardless of your skin tone!

Here are some tips from the experts at the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Dermatology and the Melanoma Research Foundation for staying safe in the sun.

You’re probably not applying sunscreen right. Studies show 10% of the face is usually not covered in lotion, usually around the eyes and eyelids. Also people don’t usually apply enough sunscreen.

Choosing the right SPF level. Experts recommend a broad-spectrum water-resistant sunscreen of at least 30 SPF, applied at least 15-30 minutes before heading out into the sun. Re-apply every 2 hours or after swimming.

Avoid peak hours or take frequent breaks. The sun is the strongest between 10 am and 4 pm, so if you and your family are splashing around, make sure to take plenty of shady breaks under the umbrella.

Avoid certain chemicals on the ingredients list. Oxybenzone and methylisothiazolinone are two flagged by the Environmental Working Group.

While it can be a struggle to live a chemical-free lifestyle, here are some options that can help you stay safe from the sun and from too many harmful chemicals.

25 Healthy Alternatives & Tips to Beat Summer Junk Food

By Randa Ragy

Holistic Nutritionist at Oasis Clinics

With summer comes a lot of beach days and laid back hanging out, and that can only mean one thing, munching on junk! Fret not, we have your back with some great tips on how to keep things under control!

SATURATED FATS

With warmer temperatures, it’s easy to be tempted by ice cream, sodas, canned juices and ice teas loaded with sugars and saturated fats.

SWAP ice cream for frozen yoghurt or sorbet. Homemade hydrating ice popsicles with your favourite summer fruits are a great alternative too.

SWAP sodas for homemade smoothies.  Dig into fruits of various colours and flavours. You are effectively fortifying your body with a wide array of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Use water, coconut water or nut milk as your base. For an added bonus, sneak in a handful of greens with benefits of huge fiber content and barely detectable subtle flavors.

A QUICK ICE-CREAM! If you freeze pieces of peeled banana, then blend them with just a bit of non-dairy milk, you have an instant banana “ice cream” frozen treat.

SWAP canned ice-tea for homemade ice-tea. Brew your green tea at home. Let it cool then throw in slices of different fruits, herbs and spices. Sweeten it up with some raw honey or coconut sugar.

TRANS FATS

Fried foods, donuts, French fries… need we go on? These are the worst sources of trans fat that can lead to inflammation in the body, a root cause of many chronic diseases.

SWAP fried foods for grills. It’s ok to enjoy a few fried calamari but don’t make a meal out of it. A better bet is to throw in the barbecue skewers of chicken, shrimp, fish, squid and veggies for extra fiber and antioxidants.

SWAP store-bought chips for baked chips. You can also switch to a “faux fry” by spritzing your potato chips with oil and baking them in the oven. Want to do even better? Go for kale, sweet potato or beet chips.

SWAP mayonnaise for yogurt. Don’t fall for creamy mayonnaise based salads like Caesar salads or potato salads.  Swap the mayo for light mayo or substitute half the mayo with yoghurt. Try lighter thinner dressings to withstand the summer heat and reduce the calories.

KEEP UP YOUR WORKOUT

Don’t let the heat trap put your exercise plans on hold. Move your workout schedule to the early morning or evening. Enjoy cooling summer activities like swimming, kayaking or surfing and just keep moving to stay fit and healthy. No matter how you schedule your day, keep busy to avoid shifting from couch to computer and limit your time in front of TV. Balance is your key, make sure to plan some time to relax and unwind.

EXPERIMENT WITH YOUR SALAD

What’s for dinner? Summer is the time to break away from traditional cooking and the heat of the kitchen. Take advantage of the abundance of fruits and veggies in summer, they are nature’s best.  Besides their unlimited benefits, they are very hydrating. Experiment with different salad ingredients. Throw in leafy greens, veggies, some cheese maybe? Add quinoa, lentils, beans, mushrooms, beets and even add some nuts or seeds for extra texture and crunchiness. Top with your favorite grilled protein and finish it up with a touch of healthy fats (avocado, olives…) and a simple olive oil vinaigrette or tahini dressing.  For a sweet touch, add some berries or sliced apples.

SUMMER MEAL TIPS

Summer means open flame cooking, so get grilling whenever you can. Get your barbecue out and grill seafood, meats, veggies, mushrooms and even fruits like pineapple. You might even use a griddle, which works just as well. Flavor with healthy marinades as mustard and herbs.

Poke bowls are another great summer dish. Try them with a quinoa or brown rice base instead of white rice, add greens, seafood and chunks of mango or pineapple, dress and enjoy.

Feeling like Mexican food? Reinvent the fajita using lettuce as your wrap and go for fish tacos with lots of greens.

SUMMER SNACKING

To help you improve your summer snacking habits, here are some healthy snack ideas, both sweet and savory, that deliver solid nutrition with each bite, you need to be creative to make them specifically kid friendly.

  • Watermelon is 90% water with a low calorie count. Make watermelon pizza by slicing circles of watermelon and topping with basil and crumbled feta cheese. Also try watermelon slush simply from 3 ingredients (watermelon, lime & coconut sugar)
  • A fruit salad of different melon balls and/or berries.
  • Impress your kids with a frozen grape necklace.
  • Bake a sweet potato and top with some yoghurt.
  • Bake kale and beetroot chips.
  • Enjoy butter free popcorn.
  • A handful of raw unsalted nuts.
  • Veggie sticks like cucumber, carrot and celery with a tablespoon of hummus, guacamole dip or olive tapenade.
  • Enjoy a protein-packed plain Greek yogurt and top with some fresh fruits.
  • Sliced apples topped with some melted dark chocolate and sprinkled with nuts.
  • Corn on the cob (but ditch the butter!).
  • Banana on a stick dipped in chocolate and nuts.
  • Skewers of strawberries and cheese cubes or caprese skewers (tomatoes, mozzarella, basil)
  • Homemade no bake granola bars.

REPLENISH THOSE ELECTROLYTES

Staying hydrated is crucial in summer. You might not realize how easy it is to become dehydrated. High temperatures and sweating lead to a loss of electrolytes. Electrolytes are minerals as sodium, calcium potassium and magnesium essential in maintaining the proper functionality of major body systems. We must replenish the lost electrolytes to avoid unwanted effects as nausea, muscle cramps and dizziness.  Drinking water alone can make the problem worse and dilute electrolytes further in your body. Replenish your electrolytes by drinking coconut water or adding a teaspoon of Celtic sea salt to any of your drinks. In addition, up your intake of foods rich in electrolytes like, dark leafy greens, melons, bananas, oranges, broccoli, figs, celery and seeds.

Tree Trunk in Korba

Tree Trunk is a multi-use space that is one part yoga studio and one part bistro. The restaurant that extends through multiple levels and indoor and outdoor spaces serves up international eats in what can only be described as a magical tree house. The food on the menu ranges from Italian to American but the eclectic fusion of flavors maintains its cool vibe dish after dish.

Mantra:  Come as you are; a simple mantra that has brought success to this unique restaurant in the mere five months it has been open. The Bohemian inspired restaurant and yoga room has something for everyone, from a shisha on the lower patio level to a juicy steak overlooking iconic Korba.

Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Signature dishes include the Vegan Veggie Burger, Halloumi Wrap, Halloumi Salad, Seafood Pasta, Lemon Garlic Salmon.

The menu at Tree Trunk is large enough for a decent selection of choices but small enough to ensure the quality and flavor consistency of each dish. For mains, the Beef Filet Iron Steak came with a thick gravy flanked by fluffy mashed potatoes. The meat was cooked exactly to the well-done specifications and the potatoes and gravy were hearty and flavorful. The meal came presented on a tree trunk plate, carved out of an old tree, complementing the restaurant’s unique decor. The Curry Shrimp with rice was a portion large enough to feed three people with A perfectly spiced curry sauce, large prawns, and colored peppers making it tasty but not overpowering nor too spicy. For dessert, the Chocolate Brownie was the perfect blend of sweet and salty with rich vanilla ice cream and the Banana Crêpe was hot to order with perfectly ripe bananas making it the just the right amount of sweet. Sweet and delicious, both desserts came in portions large enough to share.

Other Menu Options that Appealed

Like any good restaurant, the list of appealing menu items made it hard to choose. On our next trip, we would definitely want to sink our teeth into one of the four different types of Quesadillas or the Vegetarian Halloumi Burger. The amount of vegetarian options featured on the menu was refreshing.

Décor & Ambience

You would have to spend a full day at Tree Trunk to be able to take in all of the decor that the space has to offer. The attention to detail in the space is phenomenal with not a single inch of the restaurant without a work of art adorning it.

The ambience at Tree Trunk is an experience unlike any other in Cairo. The ambiance takes you out of the hustle and bustle of the city and transports you to a quiet beach lodge in the tropics. The ambiance is soothing and tranquil making it hard to want to leave.

Beverage options: Beverage options include both hot and cold non-alcoholic drinks; soft drinks, fresh juices, as well as tea and coffee.

Clientele mix: The clientele at Tree Trunk is a genuine mix of Cairenes ranging from guests in their 30s-40s to university students studying to young hipsters out on the town. The vibe of the restaurant is welcoming to all.

Price range:  Modest price range with a few higher end options but a meal out at this boho-chic restaurant definitely won’t break the bank.

Hot Tip: On Friday mornings the restaurant is transformed into a yoga studio. Pop by for a class and stay to enjoy a delicious brunch off of Tree Trunks breakfast menu!

Mohamed Ali: Charisma & Strength as El Raed Serag

An established businessman with thriving construction companies, Mohamed Ali started in the industry of cinema with a serious push from his friends. Urged to partake in acting workshops due to his strength of character and charisma, he quickly landed bit parts as strong men in TV series and films. Most recently he secured a role as police officer Serag in the hit Ramadan series Tayea’. We sat down with the actor in his plush poolside garden to learn more about his roots, beginnings, and what the future holds.

CWM: Tell us more about how you got your start in the movie industry.

MA: I had a lot of apprehension about getting involved in acting, even before my first acting workshop I kept second-guessing whether I should go. I ended up enrolling under a false identity and creating a double life for myself, just so I could get honest feedback from my colleagues and the acting coach! It ended up becoming too challenging to keep the two lives separate; so I dropped out halfway through the course but my acting coach still submitted my name for auditions in a TV series. I went to audition with my friend from the course and ended up landing a part in the movie Al Qashash as an officer named Galal. Next came Al Me’addeya.

What was your experience like filming the role of El Raed Serag in Tayea’?

When they first approached me for the role and told me about the storyline and who was involved in the project, I immediately jumped onboard and signed. I didn’t even have to see the episodes they wanted to show me. The story involves causes I’m very passionate about, like preserving Egyptian heritage and protecting our antiquities, so I already felt close to the character of Serag – I felt like it was actually me on those pages saying those lines!

How did you prepare for the role?

When I say I felt close to him as a character, I mean it! I really didn’t even have to prepare in any way. Serag’s main concern and goal in life is to protect this nation’s antiquities and seek justice for those who trade illegally in Egyptian antiquities, even to the point that a part of the Ministry of Interior is against him and monitor him. In truth, for the past two years, I have also been completely preoccupied with the topic of Egyptian antiquities and protecting them from theft. I am a proud Egyptian and this is our legacy, we were number 1 in the world. I even have a painting in my home of myself dressed in Pharaonic warrior clothing.

Is the filming schedule on a Ramadan series tough on actors given the short time you have to prepare and get the series on air?

Honestly, it’s much tougher on the people working behind the camera. As an actor, it’s way less hectic compared to their work load. For actors, it’s just a lot of waiting around and possible boredom, but what is that in comparison?

You have been in a lot of action roles, a lot of police officers, do you feel more comfortable in these roles or is there something else you would like to try?

Yes, I get offered a lot of roles as police officers! (laughs) I would just like to take on any role with a backstory and some history to explore rather than just a strong man hitting people a lot. Someone with a family, experience, a life story. I would take a role as a bawab if there were a story to tell there.

Taking on those action roles requires you to stay in shape, too. What is your secret, how do you manage that with your busy schedule?

It runs in the family! My father was a world champion body builder and I grew up training along with my four brothers, so my mother was literally in the kitchen full-time feeding us dozens of eggs and roasted chickens. Fitness is a part of my life.

Who did you grow up admiring in terms of actors?

All the big action stars. Arnold Schwarzenegger was a body builder and became an action star. Stallone got his big break in Rocky. These guys have had long careers over decades. What is not to admire? I’d love to do a big budget blockbuster like Con Air or Troy one day, it would be a dream.

What has been your proudest achievement so far?

Producing my own film! I wanted to make a movie where it was group effort with all the actors enjoying equal billing and importance in the story. I wanted to create a good action movie with heart. I felt like the parts I had played before didn’t have enough of a back-story and depth, so I wanted a chance to play a fully fleshed out character. I searched through scripts for about a year – many of the stories were too depressing, to the point that I even tried to write my own script to get to right! A friend of mine then told me about the script for El Bar El Tany and I couldn’t put it down. It’s a real human story, and it is so relatable. These people really do put their lives on the line, spend thousands and risk everything because they don’t have papers to travel. I lobbied Ali Idris to make the film with me and ultimately convinced him to give me the part of Saeed although they would have preferred to give the role to an actor with more experience than me!

What was filming a movie on this epic scale like?

This film was pitched to several production houses who passed on it, and there’s probably a big reason why. Filming at sea is extremely challenging and drowning a boat has actually never been done before in Egyptian cinema, so this was a major obstacle – both in organizing it and financially. We ended up having to squeeze the boat drowning scenes down as long as possible to save money, but it was still a huge undertaking. I don’t think I will ever produce another film! (laughs)

But the film ended up making it into the film festival circuit.

Yes, but I received a lot of backlash for personally financing the film unfortunately. There were also questions about me being on the poster alone, which was a bit silly, I was trying to strengthen the film’s standing.

Summer Stars: Your July & August Forecast

By Maeri Frances

It’s holiday season, so why not take a peek at what the stars are up to and how things could play out for you. It’s a mixed bag, with water signs in particular enjoying Jupiter’s return to direct motion later in July. Throw in yet another Mercury retrograde a few days later and we all need to double and triple check those pesky little details. Apply that to car maintenance, travel plans, social media Apps and computers. Better to be safe than sorry.

P.S. Don’t forget, your rising sign plays a big role, so check that out as well if you know it.

Happy birthday,

Cancer

Summer means sea and relaxation, especially for water signs, as it gives you a chance to replenish your energy. Jupiter is now going direct in your 5th house of love, kids, creative projects from the 10th of July and is giving you permission to let your hair down and have fun. A social get-together on the 12th could bring a bit of excitement and new faces into your life. Singles, take note!

Sparks could fly around the 2nd of August, this could be over money matters or joint resources. Domestic matters are well aspected from the 7th, maybe staying close to home beats travelling this summer?

Leo

July seems relatively quiet until the 9th, when mixed messages and a lack of clarity could upset your plans. If you are travelling on that date, make sure you have everything in order. Venus puts you in an acquisitive mood from the 10th, shopping will take on a new appeal. Consider yourself warned! Good news about a family matter or property could come around the same time; things that had stalled out may gather momentum.

Misunderstandings may crop up in August with Mercury retrograde. Try to stay cool around the 2nd when something or someone may really irritate you. Look forward to better days around the 18th and 19th.

Virgo

Be content to play out your role in things quietly in the background and things will fall into place rather nicely this summer. There are some really stellar days tucked away for you, look at 22nd and 28th of July for a feel-good relationship with people you care about. Money matters are more upbeat during August, but you will also be more easily tempted to splurge your hard-earned Piasters. The rather difficult period at the beginning of August may impact your health, so don’t take unnecessary risks. Things around the workplace could also be a bit tense then, so use your famed ability to see things in the correct light rather than throwing yourself into the fray.

Libra

The past few months may have held a few challenges, especially on the domestic front, but try to get past that and make the most of the holiday mood. Catch up with friends, and even make holiday plans together. You need to reconnect a bit. With Mercury retrograde it will pay to double-check all arrangements, however. August brings Venus into your sign, so it is a great time to revamp your appearance with a few new items or a fresh look.  You will feel better about yourself and that will help in your closest relationships, of course.

Scorpio

Jump on board the general good mood on the 1st and 2nd of June. Planets in Cancer are urging you to nourish yourself emotionally, in spite of duty-driven Capricorn energy still being a dominant force. Venus will soar into your solar 10th house this month, putting you in the spotlight, especially when it comes to career and outward achievements. Make sure you are looking your best, as a stylish appearance will garner extra points. The 18th and 19th could call on you to temper idealism with commonsense in a romantic situation.

Sagittarius

Put on your thinking cap and come up with some budget-friendly ways to make the most of vacation season without maxing the credit cards. You love the outdoor vibe, so why not get into a new sporting activity near the sea? Keep things simple this year, summer doesn’t have to be about big parties and crazy nights. Check out less crowded locations, and team up with a few close friends to create your own scene. One word of caution, try to avoid road trips in the first few days of August, who needs the crowds and the aggravation, right?

Capricorn

This may not go down as one of the easiest years in history for you, but you should be able to take stock and feel a real sense of accomplishment. Now it is time to spend time on nurturing yourself and spending time with the people you have been ignoring a bit too much recently. Yes, family and your closest buddies. The 22nd and 28th of July have potential for romantic interludes, so keep them bookmarked as special date nights with your special person.

Aquarius

Can’t live with them and can’t live without them. That seems to sum up the role others play in your life this summer. You need to take some time out to deal with matters that have been put on your mental back-burner. Find time for meditation and a bit of soul searching. A trip to a different culture could be the breath of fresh air you need, or if that is out of range, at least some reading on new topics to blow away a few cobwebs. The first week of August may be challenging, so let off steam in a positive way with some balanced exercise. Tai chi, anyone?

Pisces

Get yourself down to the beach. Any beach will do. It is your most reliable solution for anything that ails you. Throw in a few trashy (or not) novels, a cool beverage or two and life’s little problems will drift away. July should offer plenty of chances to do just that, and by August, when your tan is looking its best, you can focus on looking your sensual self. Singles alert, this is a great time to meet new faces. Summer flings may be just that, but overall, this is the best year you have had for a while.

Aries

The first half of July seems to fit your laid-back mood. You need time to recoup your energy and get ready for an August full of fun. You could still be busy on the work front, or caught up with routine matters. Things pick up speed by the 3rd week, and August offers a welcome boost to your love life. If you are already in a committed relationship you can expect to have a lot of good vibes flowing your way. Singles may find themselves meeting people who are one the same wavelength, so put on your best smile and get out there and mingle. Finances may have their ups and downs, so be careful not to splash out on impulse purchases.

Taurus!

Family and domestic matters may conflict with your career objectives, as July gets under way. Don’t let frustration get the better of you, be patient and keep your goals in sight. By the 10th you will have a lot more opportunities to enjoy the company of friends, party and relax.  Venus will support your hedonistic side for the coming few weeks, so plan accordingly. You might verge on being lazy, so make time for a bit of exercise. Hit the dance floor, walk to the latest spot for dinner instead of hopping in the car. You are in the mood for change, and August may bring new faces into your life to bring it your way.

Gemini!

Don’t feel that you are missing out if July doesn’t offer a true holiday vibe, the rewards for putting in a solid day’s work will pay off in spades. Then you can have fun when August rolls around.  Your social life should be great, with plenty of time to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. Things are rather volatile around the 2nd of August, if you want to avoid spats it’s best to keep it zipped rather than speaking up. Once that mood is out of the way you should be on track for a rather pleasant month.
