L’Uliveto at Fairmont Nile City

Eager to sample the offerings at Fairmont Nile City’s new Italian fine dining establishment, we visited for a midweek dinner at this place aiming to be one of the best Italian restaurants in Cairo and were escorted on a gastronomic journey, with a contemporary twist, into the roots of Italy’s regional dishes.

Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Every item on the menu stood out, but we were recommended to try the Carpaccio Di Manzo, The Calamari and the Zuppa di Mare al Cartoccio.  The sous-vide method of cooking at precise temperatures in a water bath is used extensively by Chef Vincenzo Guglielmi to ensure dishes retain flavor and right level of cooking.

When you have an expert on hand, it pays to sit back and follow his lead. L’Uliveto Assistant Manager Francesco Pelliccia presided over our evening from the minute we entered, so we thankfully allowed him to select dishes sure he thought we would enjoy. Our fresh and fizzy strawberry-based welcome drinks set the mood perfectly as we waited for our starters.

Arriving together, our Carpaccio di Manzo and Calamari Fritti were both exquisitely presented. The generous platter of wafer thin slices of herb crusted beef fillet came with ruccola, sprouts, taro chips, Parmigiano cold sauce, a sous-vide egg yolk sauce and cheese crisps.  Sounds daunting? It was actually delicious, and went down quickly. The tiny rings of fried calamari came nestled on a bed of baby greens, accompanied by a fresh tomato relish, shrimp oil and homemade sweet garlic mayo. The batter was crunchy and light, and the textures counterbalanced each other well. The slate serving platter was a great choice, it was as a pretty as a picture.

We followed this with a richly flavored Zuppa di Mare al Cartoccio. Cooked in its own plastic bag, the seafood soup is ceremoniously cut open at the table, allowing diners to appreciate the release of the aromas given off by the steaming hot contents. Don’t we all love a touch of theatre?

The tomato and fish based broth was packed with squid, grouper, shrimp, mussels, roast onion and baby potatoes. It felt traditional to the core; we were transported to some tiny Italian fishing village on a rocky Adriatic coastline from the first sip.

When dining Italian, we always love a bite of pasta, so we went with the Ravioli Caprese. The spinach flavored pasta pockets came stuffed with mozzarella and tomato, with a fresh tomato crudaiola, basil pesto, basil sprouts, Parmigiano mousse and roasted baby tomatoes to elevate it to something special.

Much as we love pasta, we are also big pizza fans, so couldn’t resist the Gourmet La Princepessa, chunks of buffalo mozzarella, smoked salmon and ruccola sprouts on freshly baked focaccia. The dough is rested for 48 hours to ensure it has the correct light and chewy consistency when baked. Perfection!

Thankfully, portions were not overly huge, so when dessert time rolled around we had no hesitation in opting for Il Tiramisu di Nina, probably the best version we have ever had the fortune to dig our spoons into. Creamy homemade mascarpone mousse, home baked savoiardi biscuit, intense espresso, cocoa and dark chocolate chips – a winning combination. What a great way to wind up an evening to remember.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverage Options

We would love to try the Ossobucco Milanese, along with nearly everything else on the menu!

Soft beverages are available, along with a full bar and great wine list.

Décor & Ambience

Contemporary, with earth and sea tones predominating. Tables are arranged to benefit from the great Nile view and low-key nostalgic music plays in the background.

Clientele Mix

Fellow diners seemed to be a mix of nationalities. Groups and business diners, all 25 +. The dress code for guests may be casual, but the service in the restaurant is impeccable and definitely reflective of its’ 5-star hotel status.

Price range: High end, but worth the splurge.

Contact Information

Opening hours: Daily from breakfast service at 6 am, through to lunch and dinner. Closes at 11 pm.

Dating Gone Wrong: Rachman Blake and the Story Behind ‘Story Party’

By: Mariam Elhamy

Ever heard about Story Party? It’s a live performance done by professional storytellers who travel the world, seeking funny dating stories that people share and telling them in front of a live audience.  Story Party has been touring around the world for audiences in Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Amsterdam, Bucharest, Warsaw, Berlin, Helsinki, Istanbul and more, and now they’re touching down in Cairo for one night only to share the laughter.

We caught up with Rachman Blake from the award-winning how for some insight on how Story Party started, his own experience with dating and the funniest stories he has ever come across.

Tell us a bit about yourself, how did you get started with Story Party and what is the inspiration behind the “Dating Stories” idea?

Story Party was born from a bad break-up. I needed relief from the struggles of a toxic 2-year relationship and so I started unloading my thoughts at open mics. It was liberating and much cheaper than paying for therapy. Then I had a few friends with similar crazy dating stories, so I asked them if they wanted to make a storytelling show as a form of group therapy, it got popular and we started world touring.

How did the idea of doing shows around the world come about?

We mainly do world tours to see how dating differs from one country to another. We also love how our show about real dating stories brings a smile to our audience’s faces, especially the ones who are currently struggling with dating.

Such a unique idea must have a mission, so what’s Story Party’s?

At the end of each show our aim is to make the audience feel better about their own stories, because they’ll realize it could be worse. Much worse!

What is the funniest story you have ever told on stage?

Here’s one of our favorite stories from an attendee: “Started a fight mid-coitus, cause he yelled the wrong name. Forgot I was using a fake one”

Do you find the idea of sharing dating stories internationally relatable?

Yes … dating sucks everywhere!

Which country has had the best audience so far and how do you handle dealing with a bad audience?

Any audience is a great audience as long as you are sharing relatable content. Besides, there’s no such thing as a bad audience in my opinion.

In your experience so far, what is the most common way people mess up when it comes to dating?

I believe that some people are too quick to blame others for their dating problems. Don’t involve other people in your issues, take ownership of your dating life and you’ll be happier.

What’s the most shocking or hilarious memorable story you’ve told on stage?

“Went to a guy’s house, didn’t know he lived with his mum. She came home, he freaked out and I had to pee. He made me pee outside on the lawn”

“Went on a 1st date with a guy. I was pretty boring so I backed out of the second date by saying I was sick. He had flowers delivered to my house… I didn’t tell him where I lived.”

“I went on a date with a guy. In the first 5 mins I knew I wasn’t into him. I said “I’m going to the loo”. I waited 15 mins. I poked my head out to see if he had left. He didn’t. So I walked out, past him and through the door to the street. Looking sideways the whole time to avoid his gaze.”

What’s the best advice you can give single people based on the stories you’ve heard?

Don’t give up hope.

What advice would you give someone who wants to start a career in storytelling or stand-up comedy?

Get as much stage time as possible. That’s it.

Story Party is happening at the Greek Campus on Sunday, August 19thfind out more here.

Healing Pain Through Laughter with Hashem El Garhy

by Mariam Elhamy

Since stand-up comedy is a rising industry in Egypt, we decided to get an inside look at the business of comedy with founder of Al Hezb El Comedy, Hashem El Garhy, to learn more about his journey in stand-up comedy, how people can pursue stand-up comedy as a career and why laughter is the best medicine of all!

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Hashem El Garhy and I am a Comediapeneur! That means half comedian and half entrepreneur. I love making people laugh and I created business around that notion.

When did you decide to start making people laugh as a career?

Ever since I was a kid, my mom (rest her soul) would tell me that I do impressions so well! I was always that kid in the family that made everyone laugh. I have always loved making people happy and I believe it’s a blessing to be able to do what I do; that it’s my real life purpose.

My career in comedy launched in 2009. There was a group of comedians who brought stand-up to Egypt and they were looking for opening acts, so I decided to give it a shot. I went on stage and I completely bombed! It was a real shock to me and I kept thinking, “I’ve always made people laugh! So why couldn’t I do it on stage?!” This made me realize how much I want to be a stand-up comedian.

What fuels your passion for stand-up comedy?

Stand-up is the truest form of comedy, because it’s just you and the audience and it is completely on you to make them laugh by just being you. They say that the best comedians are able to match their inner voice with their outer voice, which really fuels my passion for stand-up comedy.

How did the idea for Al Hezb El Comedy come about?

The idea came about in 2011, when everyone was talking about how they want to change Egypt. At that time, I had a mundane job where I felt really underappreciated, so I came up with the idea and I created Al Hezb El Comedy’s first event. It was a huge success. Thank God, it has been going for seven years now!

What is a big misconception people have about stand-up comedians?

Sometimes, when people come across one comedian that doesn’t make them laugh or they can’t relate to their jokes, they immediately decide that they’re not into stand-up comedy at all. Each comedian has their own storytelling and scriptwriting style, and since this industry is new, we try to tell people to give it a chance.

How do the people in a comedian’s life deal with their lives being shared as a joke? Have you gotten in trouble yourself with friends and family?

For starters, I always tell the person before I go on stage. I reassure them that I’m not making fun of them personally, but of the situation itself. Not everyone understands that comedy is the best medicine; personally I look at everything in my life as a comedic situation because even the hardest times present a challenge for me to deal with what is happening lightheartedly. But thank God, I haven’t really gotten in trouble with anyone … yet.

Tell us a joke or story you always get the most reaction for?

My teta (grandma) just turned 99 years old … big applause for teta! The problem is, we are all embarrassed to tell her “Happy birthday teta3o2bal 100 sana!”

How long can you tell the same story/joke before you retire it?

It really depends on the audience and how popular or new you are as a comedian, which most of us still are. You can always reconstruct a joke though.

Have you ever faced any challenging moments with the topics that you talk about?

I’ve been through a lot of tragedy in my life … some of that tragedy was me donating a part of my liver to my mom, God rest her soul. One time I was telling a joke about how even after I donated my liver to my mom, she still won’t do my laundry! The audience didn’t take that joke very well and they didn’t know how to react at all. But I deal with every part of my life with comedy, because if I don’t I would probably be a very sad person. I know that we aren’t supposed to talk about some things, but I believe that people should talk about everything. It makes us human to be able to discuss our pain, because only then will we be able to heal.

In your opinion, how does Egyptian comedy differ from other countries?

As Egyptians, we make fun of everything … including ourselves! I think that Egyptian comedy has guts, a lot of Egyptians use comedy as a tool to escape the frustrating life we face. That’s why Al Hezb El Comedy’s motto is “Fok Nafsak“.

What does it take to be a good comedian?

Being a good comedian, like any other job in the world, takes a lot of work. You write, you practice, you get on stage and you perform live. Open mic is like the gym for us, so a good comedian exercises their jokes constantly and always keeps improving their performance.

How do you deal with a tough crowd?

I start making fun of them to break the ice. But the important thing to remember is that you just give it your best shot and sometimes it works, other times it won’t and that is okay.

What advice would you give someone who wants to start a career in stand-up comedy?

My advice is: If you have a good sense of humor come to Al Hezb El Comedy and try the open mic. Let the audience decide, but make them love you!

What is the main inspiration behind your own comedy?

Everything is comedy … Life is comedy. Every situation has comedy in it. It just depends on perspective and how you look at it.

Who is your mentor? Who is your favorite comedian?

I never really had a mentor in comedy. My friend Rami Boraie always encouraged me to write, write and write some more. My favorite comedian is Dave Chappelle, he’s an amazing comedian and I aspire to meet him one day.

Summer Stars: Special Days to Watch in August

By Maeri Frances

Have you been waiting all year for that magic month, when you can ease back and relax at the beach with friends and family? Then take a peek at the weather forecast to know how to navigate the days ahead … Don’t forget, your rising sign plays a big role, so check that out as well if you know it.

1st to 3rd August:

The main energy point is a rather tetchy square between high energy Mars and unpredictable Uranus. This will have the strongest impact on those born in the first couple of days of Taurus, Leo, Scorpion and Aquarius, but we all may need to keep our tempers in check. Bite your tongue, don’t push issues and keep calm…

4th to 6th August:

A lovely passage of the Moon through earthy Taurus will highlight the sensual side of life. Good food, the right music, a massage maybe. Time to indulge your hedonistic side. By the 6th there will be an increased mood for communication and activity.

7th to 8th August:

With the Moon in airy Gemini and Venus sliding gracefully into fellow air sign Libra, there will be a focus on social life, romantic relationships and partying. Not the ear-blasting music variety, more the sort where conversation holds sway, and singles may meet a new love interest.

9th to 10th of August:

This period starts on a nice upbeat note, with plenty of communication and goodwill, but by the 10th it may have all become a bit much and grouchiness could set. Pace yourself and don’t overdo things.

11th to 12th of August:

If you can avoid mental confusion and unclear communication on the 11th, you should find that the 12th runs more smoothly. A Leo New Moon on the 11th invites you to strut your stuff, so dress up and be ready to party.

13th to 14th of August:

The mood is more about meeting deadlines and getting down to business than sheer relaxation. Maybe just a bit of networking on the beach or around the pool? It all helps. The 14th is a good day for socializing.

15th to 17th of August:

There may be undercurrents swirling around that you cannot quite fathom, so don’t throw yourself into a situation without having a clear picture of what is really going on. It will be important on the 17th to maintain a positive attitude, that will help ease the way through any tense standoffs.

18th to 21st of August:

Just when you think that positive approach is paying off, whoops… here we go with another Mercury retrograde. The easy way out is to ignore unnecessary mental processes, or mechanical ones, and let your instincts and intuition pay a bigger part in your life for a few days.

22nd to 23rd of August:

The mood in general is pleasant and rather low key. Use the more relaxed vibe to catch up on some time to rest and gather energy for the last week of the month. Virgo and Capricorn will have an instinctive rapport, so try to spend time together.

24th to 25th of August:

Don’t feel snubbed if people seem a little reclusive or withdrawn, it isn’t you; it is just the reflective mood that sets in as everyone starts facing up to the fact that the working world is still there, waiting. All good things must come to an end, summer vacations included.

26th to 28th of August:

There are different ways to get what you want, and this period suggests that a subtle but honest approach will be a lot more productive that trying to strong arm your way. Any scheme that is less than transparent will be obvious, so keep things above board.

29th to 31st of August:

Yes, we know you are feeling a bit glum. How could a summer vacation have sped by so quickly? The planets are not offering much to boost your mood either; there is a winding down vibe in the air. Time to pack your bags, along with a bundle of great memories to treasure. The rush and disorganization of the early hours of the 31st make way for a more focused mood a bit later. Have a leisurely breakfast before you hit the road.

6 Great Oils for Healthy Hair & Boosting Growth

CWM: Why is oiling so good for the hair?

MR: There are several reasons! The right oils will nourish the scalp, give a natural shine and softness, prevent breakage and split ends, moisturize dry hair, and stimulate hair growth and potentially delay greying.

What are some of the right oils that benefit your hair?

It all depends on what you are targeting, but here are some common oils and ailments they address. Rosemary and peppermint oil can both relieve dandruff and hair loss, lavender oil increases hair growth, grapefruit oil combats dirty or oily hair, while sandalwood and vanilla oil enhance the overall appearance of your hair and give off a pleasant aroma. Look for any of these oils on the ingredient list of your shampoo or conditioner or create DIY hair treatments at home.

Besides using oils, what other natural ways can boost your hair growth?

Certain foods contain beneficial vitamins, omega 3 oils and proteins that encourage hair growth. Try to up the intake of eggs, lentils, soybeans, salmon, sweet potatoes and spinach in your diet as each individually contribute to healthier and fuller hair. Also pay attention to the health of your scalp and improving blood circulation. A head massage and daily combing helps with ridding your hair of toxins and dead skin cells. Minimizing heat styling and blow-drying will also limit any damage to your scalp and hair. Use an apple cider vinegar rinse to strip away the build up from your regular products without removing the good natural oils.

DIY – Peppermint Oil Treatment for Hair Growth or Flaky Scalp

  • Combine one tablespoon of a carrier oil such as jojoba or almond oil with two drops of peppermint oil into the palms of your hands.
  • Mix between the palms of your hands, then apply to the roots of your hair and the scalp. Avoid middle or lower portions of your hair, focusing only on the roots of your hair or your scalp.
  • Massage the oil over your scalp for 5 minutes then leave the mixture on your head for 20 minutes.
  • Wash your hair, but avoid using any conditioner.
  • Repeat every three days. You can use your regular conditioner in-between treatments.

* You should feel a slight tingling due to the peppermint – if it bothers you, stop and wash your hair.
