But the more time Em spends with Alex, the more she realizes that she may not be the Grinch she always thought she was. How to Develop Healthy Dietary Habits for Kids

By Tabibi 24/7 Nutritionist Sherifa El Nahass

Children who eat too much fat, sugar, sodium or processed food and too few vitamins and minerals are at a higher risk of developing several chronic health problems over time. These include diabetes, kidney stones, bone loss, cancer and heart disease.

On the other hand, proper nutrition is tied to better academic performance, so kids who have poor eating habits are more likely to score lower on tests and have a harder time with schoolwork.

There are long-term effects as well, not getting enough essential nutrients at meals may lower kids’ IQ scores, memory capacities, fine motor skills, social skills and languages skills into early adulthood and beyond.

A child’s poor dietary habits can even influence sleep patterns, which may have an effect on cognitive behavior and academic abilities. Children who are micronutrient-deficient may exhibit more aggressiveness, less mental endurance and lower intelligence test scores.

Reduce sugar intake

Excessive sugar intake interferes with children’s cognitive abilities, depletes their energy and makes them lose focus more easily. Designing a lunch box that includes the right amount of proteins, carbs, fats and fibers is important for your child’s overall health, growth and development. It helps keep their brain and nervous system working properly.

Watch those calories

School-age children need about 1,600 to 2,500 calories per day. Caloric ranges are just general guidelines since caloric needs vary a lot based on size, activity level and whether or not the child has been sick recently. Calories aren’t the only thing you need to be aware of if you want your child to be healthy; you also need to make sure your child is eating a mix of foods from all the food groups.

Keep hydrated with water

Water has none of the sugar found in fruit drinks, soft drinks, sports drinks and flavored mineral waters, which can cause tooth decay. Imagine that one can of soft drink per day adds 18 kilos of sugar to your child’s diet each year! Also, the fluoride in tap water helps your child develop strong teeth and bones.

The recommended daily amount of fluids varies with age as follows:

  • 5 to 8 years old: 5 glasses (1 litre) per day
  • 9 to 12 years old:  7 glasses (1.5 litres) per day
  • 13 years +: 8 to 10 glasses (2 litres) per day

These amounts could be increased if exercising or on a hot day. We often don’t feel thirsty even when our bodies need fluid, so it’s a good idea to drink water regularly throughout the day.

Cuts & Nuts in Family Mall, 6th of October

By: Mariam Elhamy

On the Cuts & Nuts menu you’ll find all kinds of waffles, crêpes, pancakes and a few desserts like cakes, brownies and donuts. You also get to add any extra toppings, from a wide selection of nuts, fresh fruits, chocolate bars, ice-cream and marshmallow. We visited this dessert place in 6th of October to sample all the sweetness and left with a satisfied sweet tooth.

Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled

Signature items include the Molten cake, pancake tower, Cuts & Nuts tajine. All served with your choice of chocolate, whether Nutella, milk, or white chocolate, or a mixture of both. The Cuts & Nuts tajine, one of their most ordered signature dishes, is made up of small pieces of waffles, brownies and pancakes, covered with Nutella and melted marshmallow.

The first dish we sampled and our personal favorite was the round waffle, topped with thinly sliced fresh kiwi, strawberries, apples, and bananas, covered with Nutella and a drizzle of white chocolate. The fresh fruit made a perfect contrast with the golden waffles, crispy on the outside but soft on the inside, perfectly complemented with rich chocolate.

We went for freshly squeezed orange juice, which was really refreshing, and a pistachio milkshake with no artificial syrups or flavors whatsoever. Then came the divine, freshly baked molten cake with hot melting chocolate on the inside, which oozed out as we cut into the cake, with a side of vanilla ice-cream. This mixture of melting hot chocolate and icy cold ice-cream created a pleasant explosion in our mouths and we devoured the whole thing in minutes!

We were getting full with all the chocolate covered goodies we had consumed, but the calories just kept rolling to our table and we couldn’t resist. We dived into the crêpe sandwich. Folded into a single layer of crêpe were some really fresh seasonal fruits covered with Nutella and drizzled with two types of chocolate.

The last dish we sampled was the Pancake Tower, which consisted of four layers of pancakes, separated by whipped cream. The whole thing is then covered with Nutella.

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

The name Cuts & Nuts originally comes from the reinvention of chocolate fondue. They cut waffles into small squares, along with fruits and marshmallow, and serve it with a pod of melted hot chocolate, either white or milk chocolate straight from the chocolate fountain. The Nutella stuffed pancake is also another dish that we’d love to try the next time.

Beverages range from hot drinks to iced coffees, fresh fruit drinks, smoothies and milkshakes

Décor & Ambience

All rich brown and chocolaty, it’s an outdoor seating area that allows you to feel a fresh breeze. While you sit at your table you can see two running chocolate fountains on the counter in the front, one for white chocolate and the other for milk chocolate. Right next to the venue there is a playground area for kids to play and roam freely, so parents can keep an eye on them while indulging in their desserts.

Clientele mix: The clientele consisted of mainly college students, teenagers, and families with kids.

Price range: Prices and the portion sizes are good. Take away and delivery options are available.

Hot tip: Catch Cuts & Nuts in Sa7el in Amwaj next year!

Sanos in Galleria 40 – Closed

When our favorite foods get this healthy, we really have something to celebrate! We visited this healthy food restaurant in Sheikh Zayed and we weren’t disappointed!

Type of cuisine: Rotisserie chicken, oven roasted potatoes, chunky-cut fries, salads, sandwiches, specialty coffees, healthy juices and some sinful desserts.

Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled

It’s not just about chicken, even though the Sanos Rotisserie Chicken is a hot seller. The healthy take on pasta, made with zucchini – zoodles, is a perfect vegan option. The healthy, sugar free smoothies pack in so many vitamins and nutrients you should be primed for at least a day or two.

Popping in for an early midweek bite after work, we took a few minutes to browse through the food options over our cool smoothies. Sanos just oozes a minimalist chic, we relaxed immediately with the BK, a mix of banana, kiwi, apple and orange, as well as the Glow, which packed a punch with pineapple, strawberry, lemon, beetroot and ginger.

At first, our palates did a double take. “What, no sugar?” A few sips in we knew why. The natural flavors shone through, and yes, they were quite sweet enough.

Virtuously, we started with salad. They come in half portions as well, so we went for two to share, the Beetbox, a tasty combination of diced beetroot, salad greens, fennel slaw, fresh herbs, white cheese, pickled walnut and goji berries, along with the Mandarin, a citrusy blend of baby kale, slaw, herbs, spicy caramelized peanuts, orange slices, sesame and peas in a miso-ginger dressing. With two freshly fried chicken tenders as a garnish it was almost a meal in itself.

We followed up with the Zucchini Pasta, slender spirals of lightly cooked zucchini lightly coated in a cashew and cauliflower sauce, just right for vegans and anyone avoiding gluten. Then came the Chicken Wings, coated in the house BBQ sauce, with a honey-ginger dip on the side.  For delicate eaters, gloves are thoughtfully provided.

Then came the star of the show. Our Rotisserie Chicken came with oven-roasted potatoes, flavor -packed from being basted with the natural juices of the chicken as it was roasted above. The chicken was pre-marinated in Sanos’s special mix of herbs and spices, and molasses. Add on a slab of traditional cornbread and you have a meal to remember. We also shared a DBL Spicy Chicken Breast, perfectly grilled and served with a to-die-for quinoa and fereek mix. Do not miss out on this one!

Our generous serving of chunky homemade fries was liberally sprinkled with rosemary, cilantro and parsley. Yummy, but we could barely do them justice as we were filling up quickly.

Everything had been light and healthy, but full of great flavors, so we almost felt guilty sharing a decadent Dulce de Leche Lava Cake. Rich, hot and chocolaty, with a cup of latte coffee on the side, it made a great finale to a thoroughly enjoyable meal.  A big plus, although we had eaten really well, everything had been light and digestible, so we felt well- nourished and energized. Maybe that’s what Sanos is really about?

Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available

It all looked good. It would be interesting to try the sandwiches; there were some original combinations.

The healthy juices are a must-try, as well as the innovative specialty coffee selection, there is plenty of choice, with teas, juices and other soft options.

Décor & Ambience

Cleverly put together, and very ‘of the moment’.  The combination of simple marble tables with retro salt and pepper shakers and napkin stands gave a 40’s vibe, harmonizing easily with the pale green banquette seats which echoed the current Scandinavian rage for the natural, organic tones of the fjords. Very pared back, but exuding a designer edge. Thumbs up, Sanos! There is choice between indoor and outdoor seating.

The staff is immensely helpful and knowledgeable about the dishes and service is polite and professional without being overbearing. With a well-compiled selection of background music, the whole feel is very calm and chilled out.

Clientele mix:

25+ sophisticated, food conscious crowd.
