What You Should Know About Acupuncture

How much do you know about acupuncture? After all, the art of using needles and pressure points to alleviate ailments has been used by cultures across the globe in different forms for centuries. To learn more, we dug a little deeper in our recent chat with Dr. Adel Badr, a surgeon and physician who also holds high accreditation in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and the practise of acupuncture. Dr. Badr shares with us all we need to know about acupuncture… and more!

The history of acupuncture

Acupuncture actually dates back several thousand years, and is mainly associated with the Chinese of course, as the culture that first developed, recorded and used it. The first major textbook named Huangdi Neijing or The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine was created around 100 BC, and it has evolved from there. Similar principles were also used by other cultures, including the Egyptians. The practise even appears to have been recognized as far as Europe, with Ötzi, a frozen mummy dating back around 5,000 years, discovered bearing tattooed markings identifiable as acupuncture points. From that point on the practise was developed and refined, becoming established in Europe through traders like the Dutch and Portuguese from the late 1500’s. Franciscan monks also played a role in this. Acupuncture has a rich history, well worth delving into.

The principles behind acupuncture

The concept and principles that rule acupuncture are aligned with the principles that govern the Eastern mentality as a whole. These same principles can be seen in many aspects of the lifestyle and culture, in farming, nutrition, nature, and the cycle of the seasons. The five elements of Earth, Metal, Water, Wood and Fire play a role, as do the theories of Chi and Yin and Yang. Acupuncture is just one branch of TCM, it uses particular points on the body through which energy can be channelled. The practitioner will have already conducted an analysis to see which organs or conditions need to be addressed.

Conditions treated with acupuncture

  • Acute bronchitis
  • Acute and chronic gastritis
  • Adverse reactions to radiotherapy and chemotherapy
  • Allergies
  • Anxiety
  • Blood pressure problems
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Dysmenorrhea
  • Infertility
  • Insomnia
  • Lower-back pain
  • Migraine
  • Obesity
  • Pain relief
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Sexual dysfunction (low libido, erectile dysfunction)
  • Stress

From the physician to the acupuncturist

The physician will conduct a thorough study of the patient, covering all aspects of the person’s physical and emotional condition. Even if the patient complains about a particular ailment, it may be generated by another part of the body; so all points should be covered before reaching a diagnosis. The practitioner may ask for certain tests, such as MRIs, blood pictures or X-rays, and will then identify the organs creating the imbalance or problem; the approach to diagnosis differs in TCM from Western methods. The practitioner should be able to read and understand the test results, as well as understanding the indications, dosages and interaction between medications being used, whether through a prescription or natural remedies.
I personally carry out a Western consultation and diagnosis in addition to one using Eastern techniques to get a clear picture of what is going on with the entire system. Body demeanour, skin color and condition, the condition of pulse, and especially the condition of the tongue are all important diagnostic tools. The tongue can indicate a lot about the state of the internal organs. The pulse is taken in six positions, each relating to the six Yin and six Yang organs in the body.

Consult a general practitioner first!

I believe it is important for anyone considering acupuncture as a therapy to consult a general practitioner as well to avoid missing anything that might be urgent or life-threatening and non-responsive to acupuncture. This would include cases needing surgery or antibiotics where there is a severe, aggressive infection or disease. In many of these cases acupuncture can still be useful as a complementary therapy when carried out in conjunction with Western therapy.

Duration depends on the diagnosis

The practitioner will lay out a program of sessions after making the diagnosis. The frequency of treatments varies according to the ailment or condition. Treatments might be daily, or twice a week, depending on the severity of the condition. Some conditions can even be treated in one or two sessions, a frozen shoulder for example. Usually if a condition is chronic we expect the treatment period to be more extended. Each session could take between 30 minutes up to an hour. The process itself is not painful; the needles are very thin and inserted lightly. We look for a chi sensation, a numbness or response in a location away from the needle itself.

Dr. Adel Badr’s Advice

Definitely acupuncture itself is part of a change in lifestyle. It is all about balance, in diet and exercise as well. Lifestyle changes are generally needed depending on the condition, as in weight loss, for example. Excesses in general should be avoided, and as with the taking of medications, there are certain rules that should be followed.

Reclaim your Curves! Fitness Tips for New Moms With Rowana Badry

So, baby has finally arrived! And let’s face it; you are probably so overwhelmed with the joy (and lack of sleep), that your fitness regimen has gone right down the drain. Fitness coach and nutritionist Rowana Badry gives her first-hand expert advice on how to get back on track during the post-natal period.

Post-natal challenges

Everything! From finding time to work out, to fatigue and exhaustion between feedings and diaper changes. Breastfeeding is also a challenge as it leaves time for little else.

Getting back to your exercise program

The kind of delivery, C-Section or natural, as well as exhaustion levels vary from one person to another. If you had a high fitness level prior to pregnancy, you can start exercising sooner than those who didn’t. It is recommended to wait 6 to 8 weeks after a natural delivery, and 12 weeks after a C-Section. The type of exercise you will be getting into also factors into the decision to start working out.

Where to start

Take it easy. Just work on each area of the body as needed, step by step. There are workout routines that can be performed anywhere using just your body weight. Go for squats, lunges, push-ups, bridge holds, planks, pelvic floor exercises, modified burpees and step ups.

How long should it take?

There are so many factors to consider. Some women don’t even gain any weight during pregnancy, while some really get big and stretch out. For the body to go back to its norm, it may take approximately 9 to 12 months. I believe that a well-nourished body with regular exercise can go back a lot faster. Remember that for breastfeeding moms it would take longer to get in shape due to all the changes the hormones are causing.

Top 5 Post-Natal Tips

  • Listen to your body.
  • Take it easy.
  • Don’t rush into movements your body isn’t able to manage just yet.
  • Find 20 minutes in the day to move, whether it’s a walk, a quick home workout or even walking with your baby, I promise your mood will be a lot better afterwards.
  • Chill, breathe, and enjoy the ride. Your workout routine will fall into place soon so do the best you can, whenever you can and don’t stress yourself.

Tabibi: New Year’s Health Resolutions You Can Stick to!

In preparation for the New Year, many people make overly ambitious resolutions with only a few sticking to their guns. The key for sustainable resolutions is to aim small, and make specific and realistic goals.

Schedule an annual check-up appointment

Seeing a doctor to monitor your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and more, should be non-negotiable. It gives you a general view of how your health is doing. Regular check-ups are necessary even if you feel healthy.

Eat clean

Whether you are planning to lose weight or not, eating clean can have an impact on your overall health. Eating clean is not about lowering your calorie intake but more about being mindful of the food’s pathway between its origin and your plate. That means embracing whole foods like vegetables, fruits and whole grains, plus healthy proteins and fats. It also means cutting refined grains, additives, preservatives, unhealthy fats and large amounts of added sugar and salt.

Stay active

This does not necessarily involve going to the gym but at least not spending a lot of time sitting — in your car, at your desk or on the couch. Move your body every day for example, walk or cycle to nearby shops, instead of driving the car, do the housework and use the stairs instead of the lift or escalator. Choose activities that suit your lifestyle considering your budget, physical abilities and amount of free time.

Get enough sleep

A good night’s sleep is just as important as eating healthy and exercising. Poor sleep is strongly linked to weight gain, poor concentration and productivity, disturbed metabolism and immune function.

Adopting good sleep hygiene on a consistent basis can encourage better sleep. For example;

  • Stick to a sleep schedule: Go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Try to limit the difference in your sleep schedule during weekends to no more than one hour. Being consistent reinforces your body’s sleep-wake cycle.
  • Pay attention to what you consume before bedtime: Avoid heavy or large meals within a couple of hours of bedtime. Also, limit nicotine, caffeine and alcohol intake. The stimulating effects of nicotine and caffeine take hours to wear off, and even though alcohol might make you feel sleepy, it can disrupt sleep later in the night.
  • Limit your daytime naps: If you choose to nap, limit yourself to up to 30 minutes and avoid doing so late in the day.
  • Improve your sleep environment: Keep your room dark and quiet.
  • Avoid prolonged use of light-emitting screens just before bedtime

Cut your stress

Easier said than done! In fact, short bouts of stress can boost your energy and memory. However, too much stress can be detrimental. It can weaken the immune system, cause high blood pressure, fatigue, depression, anxiety and even heart disease. While it is impossible to eliminate all negative stress from your life, you can control the way you react to it.

Take care of your mental wellbeing

Mental wellbeing is just as important as physical wellbeing.

  • Identify your mood triggers: Understanding what affects your mood positively or negatively can help you take steps to create or avoid these situations respectively.
  • Relax: It is important to make time for yourself and relax. Do something you like, even for 5 minutes a day! Relaxation techniques are various, including yoga, meditation, mindfulness or a good massage session!
  • Build healthy relationship with people: Spend more time around positive supportive people. Make time for family and friends. Socialize in real life not on the web!
  • Learn to accept yourself: Not comparing yourself to others, acknowledging what you are good at, and challenging unhelpful thinking patterns are all keys to enhancing your self-esteem.

6 Amazing Places to Go Rock Climbing in Egypt

Sweating in the gym isn’t really your thing, but you still want to get all those muscles toned? Throw in fresh air, amazing scenery, good company, and some really challenging terrain … rock climbing may be the best thing to do the trick.

From Cairo to Gouna, and a few other beauty spots, people of all ages and varying levels of fitness are getting out and enjoying nature first hand. If you need to grasp the basics there are excellent trainers and climbing walls in Cairo to help you on your upward path, but nothing beats the real thing, we promise you. The cooler months offer the best conditions for the sport, why wait?

6 Amazing Climbing Locations

Ain Sokhna

An easy drive from Cairo, Rock ‘n’ Rope operates from Il Monte Galala in Ain Sokhna. Co-founded by well-known adventurer Omar Samra and Nora Kafafi, Rock ‘n’ Rope provides excellent climbing sites along with all the support and assistance required.

El Gouna

If you feel inspired and motivated by Gouna Mountain Goats’ phenomenal pics on Instagram, give them a buzz to learn more about how and when you can link up. Great as those photos may be, nothing beats taking some yourself when you explore the valleys and mountains with the help of experienced local Bedouin guides.

Dahab – Sinai

The mountains that form a stunning backdrop to the beach hub of Dahab have been a natural draw for trekkers and tourists for years. Their appeal is eternal, and should be considered a ‘must see’ for any visitor to the area. Trips and treks for all levels of fitness and expertise are arranged by several well-organized companies and guides.

Sinai Rock Climbing Centre, an offshoot of Desert Divers in Dahab offers rock climbing in Wadi Qnai. You can learn to rock climb or improve your climbing technique, or enjoy the sport climbing and bouldering for more experienced climbers. The center offers transportation and safari support along with other useful information.

Mokattam in Cairo

Who would have dreamt that challenging climbs are within such easy reach of home? Mario High Ropes Team offers running, climbing, and a number of other high adrenalin activities near Saint Samaan the Tanner Monastery (Deir Sama’an Al-Kharaz). Open daily except Sundays.

St. Catherine

Deep in the heart of Sinai‘s majestic mountains there are some wonderful peaks and rock faces to challenge adventurers. The easier climb up the trails of St. Catherine to catch the sunrise are well trodden, but adrenalin junkies should also check out the more demanding options.

Cairo

And finally, you don’t have to go far for this one. Not as natural as the other locations but equally as fun, Ascent is an indoor climbing facility in Sheikh Zayed. Grab your friends and head over there and meet their funtastic team.

If you live on the Eastside and don’t fancy the trip all the way to Sheikh Zayed then head over to FingerLock in 90th Street. Dare to climb their 12M high artificial mountain with 20+ different routes. Suitable for all ages.

Footwear

Sensible footwear is essential when trekking, so it is worth investing in hiking boots that protect your feet and support your ankles. For actual rock and boulder scaling you really need specialized climbing shoes. Normally these have a snug fit, very little padding and a smooth, sticky rubber sole.

Cairo Climbing Walls

Although it is hard to beat the sheer thrill of getting out of town and exploring the great outdoors, you can still learn the skills and get in some practice inside Cairo.

FingerLock Climbing Gym operates from Concorde Plaza’s Gold’s Gym in Street 90, 5th Settlement. It is Egypt’s first rock climbing and bouldering school and gives sessions with workouts and techniques for beginners and intermediate skilled climbers.

You can also find a climbing wall in the gym at JW Marriott and Bounce Egypt. Rock ‘n’ Rope also has plans to open a climbing school in Cairo.
