Chickenpox is a highly infectious disease caused by a virus. It is commonly seen in preschool and school-aged children during the months of March through May. Here we provide answers to the frequently asked questions about the viral infection.
What are the symptoms of chickenpox?
The most common symptoms of chickenpox are rash, fever, irritability, headache, and loss of appetite. The rash usually develops on face, chest, and back and then spreads to the rest of the body. The rash usually forms 200 to 500 itchy blisters in several successive crops. The illness lasts about 5 to 10 days.
How serious is chickenpox?
It’s usually not serious, but the itching can be very uncomfortable. In some cases, chickenpox can cause serious problems such as:
Skin infections
Pneumonia (Infection in the lungs)
Brain swelling
Those more likely to suffer a more severe infection and complications include infants, adults, pregnant women, and those with a weakened immune system (due to cancer, HIV, or medications such as high doses of steroids).
How does chickenpox spread?
Chickenpox spreads through the air when a person who has chickenpox coughs or sneezes. It can also spread by touching or breathing virus particles from an infected person’s blisters. In addition, maternal varicella is transmitted from a pregnant mother to her baby. It takes 10-21 days for the symptoms to show after coming into contact with the virus. Keep the infected person away from other family members who have not had chickenpox.
How long is my child infectious?
Your child can infect other children 1 to 2 days before the appearance of the rash, and until all the blisters have formed scabs or crusts.
Can you get chickenpox more than once?
Most people are immune to chickenpox after having the disease. However, although it is not common, second cases of chickenpox can occur, particularly in people with weakened immune system.
Is there a vaccine for chickenpox?
Yes. Children who have never had chickenpox should get 2 doses of the chickenpox vaccine. These usually are taken at 12 to 15 months of age and at 4 to 6 years of age. People 13 years of age and older (who have never had chickenpox or received chickenpox vaccine) should get two doses at least 28 days apart.
How effective is this vaccine?
More than 99% of children develop immunity to the disease after 2 doses of the vaccine. Although some vaccinated children (about 2%) will still get chickenpox, they generally will have a much milder form of the disease.
Can the vaccine protect you if you’ve already been exposed to chickenpox?
Yes, it is 70% to 100% effective if given within 72 hours of exposure.
Why not let my child get chickenpox naturally and build natural immunity?
Chickenpox can be a mild disease, but at times it can also be very serious. There is no way of predicting disease severity. By ensuring that your child receives the vaccine, you minimize the risk that they will suffer from complications of the disease.
How is chickenpox managed?
Chickenpox usually clears up by itself without any specific treatment. However, there are ways of easing the itch and discomfort:
If your child is in pain or has fever, you can use Paracetamol or Ibuprofen. Never use aspirin to reduce pain or fever in kids with chickenpox, as it has been associated with a rare but serious disease called Reye Syndrome.
Put calamine lotion on itchy areas (but do not use it on the face, especially near the eyes).
Use cool wet compresses or bathe the child regularly with cool or lukewarm water to reduce itching and prevent infection of the blisters. Also, to prevent infection and scaring, the child’s fingernails should be kept short, mittens or socks may be worn on the hands at night.
Serve foods that are cold, soft, and bland because chickenpox in the mouth can make drinking or eating difficult. Avoid feeding your child anything salty or acidic.
Children with chickenpox should not return to school or daycare until all lesions are crusted over.

Frank & Co’s new vegetable rich menu will please anyone trying to lead a vegetarian lifestyle. Far from boring, the plant-based offerings there are tasty and exciting! So if you’re looking for a vegan/vegetarian friendly restaurant in Maadi, this is the spot.
Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled
Signature dishes include the Spicy Roasted Pepper Hummus, Mediterranean Quinoa Salad and Sweet Potato-Chickpea Curry.
The moment we arrived we fall in love with Frank & Co’s terrace, Frank was there to welcome us and guide us through the new menu that Victoria came up with. Everything is healthy and plant-based and all the options are perfect for vegans.
We first went for the Spicy Roasted Pepper Hummus, which hit all the right notes. The pepper is packed with antioxidants, vitamin C to fight colds and vitamin A for healthy eyesight, as the menu clearly states. A combination that works well, with the pepper giving the hummus a little spicy kick, offset by the soft and warm, freshly-baked bread that came too.
Next came the Mediterranean Quinoa Salad with Citrus Dressing. Quinoa is rich in protein, which makes it quite filling. Also a good source of fiber and phytonutrients. This will probably become our go-to summer salad this year!
The Chickpea, Avocado, and Mustard Wrap arrived; we bit into the rich and creamy wrap, and felt no want for any meat to make this satisfying. Avocado is one of the best foods for the brain due to its high good-fats content.
As the weather is still cold, we went for a dish aptly called Something Warm; it was a sweet potato-chickpea curry with brown rice. The dish packed a rich flavor profile with deep and sensual spices making this dish truly delicious. We felt no shame in using the bread to scoop up this sauce!
Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available
Dip of White Bean, Avocado and Basil; Spicy Hummus, Grilled Vegetable Wrap; Asian Rice Salad with Peanut Butter Dressing and Teriyaki Tofu Bowl with Brown Rice and Vegetables.

DJing has come a long way since its simple beginnings in the 1940s. As music was introduced into radio stations as a way of breaking up the monotonous talking, there grew a requirement for specialist equipment on which radio presenters could play their tunes. As the musical element grew in popularity, consequently, the need for equipment which could shift easily from one tune to another also grew.
And so, turntables were born and the vinyl revolution began. These famous wax black discs were the first way that music could be properly reproduced and sold on a mass scale. As a result, radio stations could ensure a constant stream of new music to play for their listeners. Moreover, the sound quality of vinyl is better than music played off of a CD or MP3. Vinyl is fuller, rounder, and has deeper bass. There is no warmth from an MP3. The slightest bit of clipping created by the DJ will cause harsh distortion coming from a digital medium; vinyl is much more forgiving.
Egypt’s party scene has been on the rise and ventures such as music studios and music stores have also been helping it evolve. More and more producers have the opportunity to grow with music production courses as well as providing musicians and producers a place to buy equipment and instruments. But sadly, this is not the case for vinyl DJs and collectors, whose suppliers are very limited! Not to mention that the level of awareness of this old-school style of deejaying is not very well known.
Local music scene hero Ahmed Samy is probably one the first names that come to mind when speaking of vinyl, as well as DJ Mazen Hamdy, Zeina, Sewwes, TATA, and several others that you can catch performing in the recently created signature night #WAX by The Tap, which allows vinyl DJs and collectors to play as well as exchange vinyl.
The inner sanctum of Mall of Arabia is rapidly becoming the place to catch up with friends over coffee and a tasty bite. Our morning visit to Qawha, one of the best breakfast places in Sheikh Zayed and 6th of October, showed us just how quickly good news can spread.
Qawha aficionados could debate for hours about their favorite dishes. Honestly, we love them all. Spoiled for choice, we went for some top picks on our visit. Definitely don’t miss out on the amazing coffee selection though.
With the morning sun gently warming up the spacious outdoor terrace, our thoughts went straight to coffee. After all, Qawha does it sooo well. It came within minutes, tall and hot. Just the way we like it.
Regulars also know that Qawha has really generous servings, so with appetites primed, we didn’t waste time tucking into a spot-on Garden Omelet. Picture-pretty, it came with a garnish of chopped peppers, onion, tomato, mushroom and cheese. Add on the salad garnish, roast potatoes and sautéed mushrooms and you have a breakfast to sustain you through the longest day. Our Croque Madame and Turkish Benedict were every bit as good, the latter being a unique take on the classic. Served on freshly baked flatbread, with garlic herbed sun-dried tomato labneh and chili flake-infused butter, the two superbly poached eggs took on an Oriental twist. Qahwa coffee and breakfast in Zayed
The setting was so pleasant we decided to extend our breakfast with something sweet to nibble on while we finished our coffee. Based on sound recommendations, we shared servings of Lotus Biscuit Cheesecake, Oreo Chocolate Pancakes, and an over-the-top decadent Volcano Cake.
The portions were massive, and it was only the fact that they were all totally yummy that gave us the strength to demolish them. The cheesecake was melt-in-the mouth light; the pancakes came with lashings of fudge sauce and a huge scoop of chocolate ice-cream. The Volcano cake was another chocolate indulgence, with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. That was a big enough sugar overload to fuel us right through the month, but hey, no regrets!
Other Menu Options that Appealed
We would love to pop back for lunch one day to try the Cobb Salad. The combination of iceberg lettuce, red kidney beans, pico de gallo, sweet-corn, smoked beef bacon and grilled chicken with grated cheese and ranch dressing sounds like a crowd-pleaser, as does the Stuffed Halloumi sandwich. coffee and breakfast in Zayed
Décor & Ambience
The Park is set out on terraced levels, and Qawha has pride of place right bang in the middle. There are two spacious outdoor areas, along with a cozy indoor area complete with a reading library. The service is impeccable and unobtrusive, with Qawha’s famed attention to detail.
Clientele mix: By 11 am on the day of our visit, Qawha was buzzing. There were groups of ‘ladies who brunch’, along with business people and groups of friends.
Price range: Reasonable, and considering the portion sizes, excellent value.
Worth noting: The Park is a members-only zone, with a variety of options available. For more information, message or call Qawha.

Off the back of a successful launch in Alexandria, Bonsai the international fusion eatery in Zamalek takes up an impressive spacious villa directly opposite Gezira Sporting Club.
Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled
Signature dishes include the Shrimp Dynamite, Beef Stroganoff, Sweet Potato Balls, and the Toasted Marshmallow Tres Leches.
To ward off the chill of winter, we started with the flavoursome Shrimp Bisque, which hit the spot. Appetizers swiftly followed; Garlic Mushroom in a garlic rosemary cream sauce served with flatbread, panko breaded Sweet Potato Balls on a bed of pesto mayonnaise, a trio of cheesy Spinach and Bacon Arancini balls with ranch dressing, and the famous Shrimp Dynamite. Mixing and matching from Bonsai’s extensive appetizer menu is a wonderful lunch option for friends to enjoy if diners wish to keep it simple – every appetizer is delicious and the sauces complement each other.
Our main courses were equally satisfying, as we chose to taste Bonsai’s signature Beef Stroganoff, a hearty dish comprising of sliced beef in mushroom cream served with crisped white rice. To balance out the beef, we also sampled the Fish N’ Chips; fried sea bass fillet with seasoned twice-cooked potato wedges and tartar sauce. The stroganoff is a taste of home, but perhaps the option of pasta or rice would give diners more choice. The fish was light and flaky, as we like it, with a special mention to the perfectly cooked wedges. One would be remiss to ignore the sushi menu, which offers a wide selection of specialties. We tasted a sushi selection of Crunchy Roll, Red Fire & White Dragon Roll, and the Philadelphia Roll; all crafted to perfection and delightfully fresh.
We capped off the meal with the Toasted Marshmallow Tres Leches, which is certainly a showstopper, it is light and not too sugary sweet – the perfecting ending to the meal coupled with a lovely cappuccino. The dessert menu at Bonsai features over 10 desserts and we want to try every single one! The beauty of a menu like Bonsai’s is the breadth of choice and avenues to take; there truly is something for everyone.
Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available
The selection of mains to a tough choice, as there is several seafood, poultry and beef options to choose from. We’d definitely love to sample more of the sushi, the variety of salads, Salmon Steak offerings or the Shrimp Curry.
Beverage options include fresh juices, smoothies, soft drinks and hot beverages.
Décor & Ambience
The décor is classic, neutral and modern with lots of green walls and accents. High ceilings and chic modern furniture provide a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, where the food dominates the conversation. Super attentive and professional service will make diners happy to return again and again.
Worth knowing: Bonsai offers three different seating areas in and around the villa to suit any number of seating needs, whether you prefer somewhere quiet or just want to enjoy the selection of shishas and desserts.
Clientele mix: Couples, families, groups of friends and Zamalek residents wander in from the adjacent Gezira Sporting Club. Bonsai is poised to be the go-to place for a great meal in a homey environment for the Zamalek crowd.

One of the best Lebanese dining spots in Sheikh Zayed is Mays Al Karam! Go for an authentic Lebanese dining in an easy, laid-back and casual atmosphere in Majarrah open mall.
Signatures Dishes & Dishes Sampled
Signature dishes include the selection of Manouche, Special Baba Ghanouj, Mays Mix Grill, Freekah with Meat Skewer, Kebbeh Labnieh, Nutella with Halawet El Ghazal.
The extensive 15-page menu left us a bit overwhelmed with lots of deliciously sounding dishes to choose from. Taking the difficult task off our hands, the evening manager made the choice for us!
We started with a famed Mays El Karam dish, the Special Baba Ghanouj, and special it was! The light and creamy grilled eggplant mash was concisely formed and topped with a squeeze of lemon and a salsa, if you will, of pomegranate seeds, finely chopped parsley, chopped almonds and walnuts, and tart pomegranate syrup. Nicely planted into the paste were small eggplant chips. Each bite delivering sweetness, tanginess, crunch and smoothness.
Accompanying this was the Makanek, a true measure of the Lebanesiness of a Lebanese restaurant. Succulent sausages cooked in pomegranate syrup and topped with pine nuts. Just the right mix of savory and sweet.
Hard to top, but we followed with a Meat Tableye, chargrilled meat lovingly laid into soft and chewy house Tanour bread, accompanied with fries, garlic dip and hummus: a superb grill taste, and a sublimely light and fluffy garlic dip.
While waiting for our dessert, we quenched our thirst with a traditional cold Jellab presented in small individual-sized jugs. The drink is made with date syrup, tamarind, rose water, orange blossom, with some shaved almonds and pine nuts thrown in for crunch. This would make for the perfect beachside drink!
It was dessert o’clock by then and Halwet El Jebn came right on time! A dough-like roll stuffed with fresh cream, topped with orange-blossom-infused syrup and crushed pistachio. Now that was as Lebanese as they come! Traditional down to the level of sweetness, which is not too sweet. Served chilled, this dessert was the perfect palate cooler after the abundance of spices we had just devoured.
Other Menu Options that Appealed & Beverages Available
Kafta Khachkhach in Yogurt, Fattet Eggplant and Kafta, and the Knafe in Ashta and Pistachio.
Beverage options include fresh juices, hot drinks, cold drinks and traditional Lebanese drinks like Jellab and Ayran.
