Second Act: The Art of Starting A New Career

Life can throw its curveballs, but then, sometimes major changes are a conscious choice. That doesn’t mean it comes any easier. Whether you have transitioned from a full-on productive career into retirement, faced redundancy, gone through a divorce, or taken time out to raise a family then decided to re-enter the workforce, the challenges are real. Life Coach, Alia Shedeed shares her advice on how to meet them head on, and come out feeling positive and fulfilled.

Common Issues when Facing a Life-Changing Junction in Your Career Path

  • The most common issue is always financial concerns. When you have had a stable job with a stable fixed salary that provides a certain feeling of security, it is easy to think you can’t let it go.
  • There is also a fear of the unknown; the brain convinces you that what you know is better than what you don’t know. You may tend to seek affirmation and approval from others who could sometimes have a negative impact on your decisions.

5 Tips for Making a Smooth Transition into A New Career

  • Make a retirement plan, based on a 6 to 8-month transition period. If you save half your salary and train yourself to exist on the other half and control your financial expenses, that will enable you to feel ready for the next phase and at the same time, to get comfortable with the idea that money is not the most essential security base in your life.
  • Minimize talking with people because this might make you feel more lost in this phase.
  • Immerse yourself in new experiences as much as you can during the transition period, this will help you discover more about yourself and new areas that might attract you.
  • Break your routine as much as you can, do different things. This will help break any resistance against change.
  • Keep a daily journal beside your bed. Every night, write about the new things you tried, how it felt, your feedback about it. This will empower you and develop your self-knowledge and minimize fear.

Reinvent Yourself and Start a New Track!

Lots of people know that they are not happy with their career but they don’t know what to do. The most powerful thing is not to think too far into the future, consider it a journey that you start today and live day by day with its ups and downs.  Look at it as a learning and development phase, not as mission-oriented; consider that success lies in the process of change, learning and empowerment rather than a more than materialistic concept of success.

Life Skills for Starting Over

  • Acceptance and ability to change are core skills needed to empower yourself to take decisions and handle the new situations. Have confidence in your inner voice. Inside, everyone has the skills and power to exist in this world, and also to share them.
  • Believe that there is nothing called failure. It is a matter of attitude, and it is in your hands if you spend your life happy or dissatisfied. So whatever your age is, seek what you feel inside to reach happiness.
  • Know that breaking the norms is always criticized, but keeping the labels and pictures required by the society is actually the main barrier, holding you back from finding yourself and your self-fulfilment.

Making Mom’s Life Easier with Tech!

The Consumer Electronics Show has wowed us once again with some mindboggling new inventions. Not just for the guys, mind you. We have rounded up some gems worthy of a place on any mom’s wish-list. Some have already hit the market; some are due to come out during 2019. Keep your antennae tuned …

Baby Bump
Phillips Avent has launched their Pregnancy+ which gives users a way to follow their baby’s development with 42 weeks of 3D fetal imagery. Pregnancy+ allows mom to track and share her pregnancy journey with family and professionals.

Monit Smart Diaper Sensor
Your baby will love you for this. Protect your little one from diaper rashes and urinary tract infections by getting an alert the minute it is time for a diaper change. Monit’s Bluetooth sensor attaches to the outside of the diaper and detects the presence of liquids or solids. Then it sends you an alert.

Hush Little Baby, Don’t You Cry
Halo, Motorola’s new monitor, has a 1080p camera that connects to the side of a crib or cot, hanging over the top so you can keep an eye on your little one. It also features infrared night vision of up to 10 meters. Halo will also project virtual light mobiles and soothing music.

A Magic Wand for Flawless Skin
It had to happen, the answer to every woman’s prayers. The Opté Precision Skincare System from P&G Ventures is made up of a Precision Wand and a Precision Serum, which work together to provide long-term benefits and instant coverage of problem areas. The wand uses four technologies: blue LED scan lights, an integrated digital camera, a Minicomputer Precise Color Algorithm and a Micro Serum Jet Printer. Used with Precision Serum, the wand may just be the next best thing to the Elixir of Youth.
We are waiting for it to pop up here in Egypt.

Snore No More
The Hupnos anti-snoring sleep mask could be solution to a problem that nobody likes to discuss. The mask comes with an app that picks up on when you’re starting to snore. It uses its built-in accelerometer to determine your sleeping position and vibrates to get you to move to a less ‘snore-able’ position. It can also increase the pressure when you exhale or Expiratory Positive Airway Pressure (EPAP) to help open up your airways and stop any snoring.

No More Counting Sheep
Urgonight is a headband and app combo that uses electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns to deliver feedback to teach you how to produce sleep-enhancing brainwaves. Apparently for sustainable results it take three months of three 20-minute sessions a week to achieve. Volunteers?

Tabibi: 10 Causes of Osteoporosis and How to Prevent it!

Part of being a woman means paying attention to bone health throughout your life. Osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle leading to an increased risk of bone fracture, is extremely common in women especially after menopause.

A number of factors can affect bone health

  • A diet low in calcium contributes to low bone density.
  • Physically inactive people have a higher risk of osteoporosis.
  • Research suggests that tobacco use contributes to weak bones. In addition, regular intake of two alcoholic drinks a day increases the risk of osteoporosis, possibly because alcohol can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb calcium.
  • Women have less bone tissue than men do.
  • You are at risk of osteoporosis if you are extremely thin (with a body mass index of 19 or less).
  • Your bones become thinner and weaker as you age. Actually, calcium loss starts by age of 30
  • Having a parent or sibling who has osteoporosis puts you at greater risk.
  • Too much thyroid hormone can cause bone loss. In women, bone loss increases dramatically at menopause due to dropping estrogen levels. Prolonged absence of menstruation (amenorrhea) before menopause also increases the risk of osteoporosis. In men, low testosterone levels can cause a loss of bone mass.
  • People who have anorexia or bulimia are at risk of bone loss. In addition, stomach surgery; weight-loss surgery can affect your body’s ability to absorb calcium.
  • Long-term use of steroid medications are damaging to bones. Other medications that might increase the risk of osteoporosis include some breast cancer treatments, some anti-seizure medications and some antidepressants.

Here are a few simple steps to prevent or slow bone loss

Increase your calcium intake: To keep bones healthy, experts recommend that adults ages 19 to 50 consume 1,000 mg of calcium per day. That number increases to 1,200 mg for women over 50.

Good sources of calcium include dairy products, almonds, broccoli, salmon, sardines and soy products. If you find it difficult to get enough calcium from your diet, ask your doctor about supplements.

Tip: Spreading out your calcium intake throughout the day increases absorption.

Pay attention to Vitamin D: Your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium. Unfortunately, vitamin D deficiency is very common.

The ultimate source of vitamin D is sunlight. Dietary sources include oily fish (tuna, Mackerel and sardines), egg yolks, and fortified milk. If you are worried about getting enough vitamin D, ask your doctor about supplements.

Tip: If you are taking a vitamin D supplement, take it with a fatty meal for better absorption.

Include physical activity in your daily routine: Regular exercising can help you build strong bones and slow bone loss.

Tip: Strength training and weight bearing exercise help protect against bone loss in younger and older women.

Stay away from tobacco and alcohol: Consult your doctor if you are concerned about your bone health or your risk factors for osteoporosis or osteomalacia, a condition that precedes osteoporosis, your doctor might recommend a bone density test. The results, in addition to your medical and social history, can help your doctor assess whether you might be a candidate for medication to help slow bone loss.

31 Looks from New York Fashion Week

We’ve collected some of the most fashion forward looks from the catwalks of New York for both women and men – stay tuned for replica looks to fill your wardrobe!

For Her

For Him

Ras El Sanna

The eagerly awaited project from the mind of legendary writer and director Mohamed Hefzy is finally hitting the screens, and we couldn’t wait to pick the brains of Hefzy and some of the star-studded cast. The gritty blockbuster is set to make audience’s heads spin with a mix of drama and intrigue, and fans will surely enjoy the sheer number of stars packed into one film. With a story revolving around the intersecting lives of dozens of characters from all walks of life, this film is one to watch. We caught up with Hefzy, Eyad Nassar, Basma, and Injy El Mokkaddem to learn more.

Injy El Mokkaddem: Mariam in Ras El Sanna

Injy El Mokkaddem: Mariam in Ras El Sana

The role of Mariam in Ras El Sanna is none other than realistic. Real-life is not picture-perfect, folks. Read the full conversation we had with actress Injy Mokkaddem for her take on Ras El Sanna.

CWM: Tell us about your character.

Mariam is a married woman; she and her husband Hassan appear to be the perfect couple with a young boy. They’re filthy rich, but not everything is as it seems – there is a coldness between them, and the audience won’t know until the end of the film what is wrong with the perfect picture.

What do you hope audiences take away from the movie?

Injy El Mokkaddem: Mariam in Ras El Sana

I believe this script and movie make it clear that no matter who we are, we’re all the same in terms of our weaknesses, faults, and the motives that drive us are the same regardless of social differences. Despite a huge gap between the various socio-economic classes, we’re all human beings with common weaknesses and struggles.

Any personal goals or resolutions you wish to accomplish in 2019?

I’ve been working on my inner peace for a while and wish to continue in 2019, I don’t want to be affected as much by external factors. I want everything to come from within and to continue working on my inner stability and strength.

El Kenz Part Two

Since the first installment of this epic historic saga hit the screens in 2016, fans have anxiously awaited the finale to the burning questions left unanswered. Sherif Arafa has created a cinematic masterpiece shot in locations across Egypt, and we can’t wait to be awed by what comes next. We caught up with two of the starcrossed lovers from the film, Hend Sabry and Hany Adel who play Hatshepsut and Senmut, and the man of the hour, Sherif Arafa.
